Surprisingly compelling mystery novel I didn’t expect to like but enjoyed tremendously. My inner Nancy Drew is cheering with approval.
Gilt Hollow is told from duo POV of Ash and Willow. Four years ago Ash was convicted for the murder of his best friend, and he spent four years in juvie for the crime he didn't commit, or so he says. Willow is Ash's childhood friend and the only person who believes Ash is innocent. But Ash had changed in the four years he was missing; he is more violent and impulsive, and suddenly Willow is not so sure about his innocence. But what if Ash is right and the true killer is still loose?
I know what you are thinking right now: it sounds just like any other romantic suspense YA book you've read before and you will be right - partly. Yes, there were some cliches at the beginning, and I rolled my eyes more than once, but the more I read, the more story was growing on me. Willow and Ash won my sympathy and I was cheering for these two damaged teenagers to find justice and have their happy ending.
There was no slut shaming, unnecessary angst or any love triangles I so hate in YA. All characters were reliable and you wanted to go along with them; to understand their motives. What I loved most is the strong movie-like vibe as if you are watching something similar to the "Scream", and you shiver with dread when the killer is lurking nearby. Gilt Hollow is such a haunted town, add to that a classic Halloween party and you've got your brand recipe of a quality teen thriller.
Plus, a big surprise for me was the writing: absolutely reliable language, where you didn't want to trash something because you couldn't stand the voice of the characters. I will absolutely check Lorie Langdon's other books!
Bottom line: if you are looking for something entertaining and intense to keep you busy during a rainy or snowy weekend - Gilt Hollow is a perfect read filled with smart characters, suspense and romantic angst to sweeten the deal. Recommended!
