A beautiful book to keep the memory living. Mongo Beti is one of my favorite authors. He is funny and inspiring. Remember Ruben tells the tale of independence in Cameroon. The transition from folk story to modern revolutionary novel after the first section was abrupt and a bit jarring, but it holds together. Mostly engaging writing, although the characters never really come alive. They read more like pawns moved around by the author rather than people inhabiting their own lives.

I like it most for what it reveals in passing, which are bits of daily life, slang and outlook in an oppressed society on the brink of de-colonialism, modernization and other big changes.

Se não quiserem ler a minha revisão na íntegra avancem para o último parágrafo da mesma que, sendo um excerto da obra, traduz todas as minhas intenções. Estou a brincar, mas falando a sério... 😄 Este é um livro que na sua matéria narrativa denuncia e mantém viva a luta do povo africano da República dos Camarões numa situação histórica concreta mas que, contudo, se mantém muito atual se pensarmos em vários países da África atual.

Um livro em que o autor, Mongo Beti, procurou promover a libertação e o encorajamento revolucionário que, na minha opinião, sem grandes rasgos narrativos e literários, contextualiza a situação político-social da República dos Camarões e vai apresentando algumas ideias interessantes de reflexão acerca do colonialismo, da máquina que representa e dos efeito da opressão nos oprimidos.

Não se trata de uma leitura cativante, mas realça-se na sua atitude progressista para quem se interessa por causas desta ordem - certamente, José Saramago não terá feito a sua tradução para esta edição por acaso ou por imposição de terceiros!

"Não tenham pressa, façam cuidadosamente as coisas, não se preocupem com prazos, o tempo, para nós, não conta. A África está agrilhoada, por assim dizer, desde a eternidade, a todo o tempo é tempo de a libertarmos. O nosso combate será demorado, muito demorado." (pp. 283)

Невідомо звідки у селищі з'являється хлопець на ім'я Мор-Замба. Жителі одразу проймаються до нього ворожістю, крім родини його однолітка Абени. Мор-Замба і Абена стають нерозлийвода, допоки підступи селян не заганяють першого до в'язниці, а другий, шукаючи кращої долі, йде в армію.
Вже на волі Мор-Замба поринає у світ політичної боротьби. Колоніальна влада готується визнати незалежність колонії, але поставить там маріонетковий уряд, тим часом затягуючи паски. Цьому може протистояти тільки така впливова людина, як Рубен - справжній символ профспілкового руху, а потім і збройної боротьби.

"Africa has been in chains, so to speak, from eternity; whenever we liberate her will be soon enough." (p. 252)

A stirring and highly charged story. There is hope here but I think Beti is more concerned to produce endurance.

Second reading: still like it although I don't know that it rewards too many re-readings. I think there is a clever structure to the story that propels the reader outwards in a significant way.
