The outside world was different than they remembered. Impersonal. Harsh. But that world was the same. It was the survivors who had changed.
When the Treaty between the United States and Russia offered the opportunity for Chuck, Madison and the others to return to Alaska, they seized it, this time leaving modern conveniences behind by choice.
Chuck and the Community have the same mission they’ve always to live life to the fullest in a new world of their own making. But that means they must confront the Russian invaders yet again as the enemy tries to establish its own settlement, and the Nagys' world turns upside down once more – maybe for the final time.
Cheer for the Community as they try to build a new society on the ashes of the old world... a harsh post-war world where danger and trials stalk them at every turn.

I see my other lives, a career in the Marines, those damn hand-written tests in law school, a business consultant, as if they're stories from a book. I see my books as if I lived there, as if I were friends with the characters. All things we remember are behind us, only those we imagine lie before.
I'm not sure which place I prefer, but I don't have to choose. They live together in my mind. My books have some award nominations, they have bestseller tags across multiple countries. I write about justice, honor, and loyalty because that's what I care about. My stories are mostly set within worlds that haven't been, but could be. We have to be ready for when those times come.
No matter where I went, I always had a book with me. Thanks to 21st Century technology, I now have hundreds of books loaded on my phone and always with me. This breakthrough allows me to binge read my favorites. How many books would I have read on deployments had I not had to have a physical book with me? I paced myself so I wouldn't finish too quickly.
We aren't encumbered like that now. I love the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. I have been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, I aspire to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared me to.
Through a bizarre series of events, I ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. My wife and I get to watch the northern lights from our driveway. Our dog has lots of room to run. And temperatures reach fifty below zero. We have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.
It's all part of the give and take of life. If we didn't have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.
Again, Craig Martelle touches on what is most important in life. Family, friends, the people who matter most to you. Chuck is the best of all of us. He is a man who lives for others, not taking the easy way, and doing more than just surviving. I particularly like how he is not fooled by the rhetoric of the politicians and military bureaucrats. Chuck is the kind of person you want around if shtf. This third installment of the Alaska series is such a good book, it even made me put off reading a new release until I finished it. I recommend this series to anyone.
The 3rd book in this series is as good as the first two. Craig Martelle has done an excellent job being together the true meaning of what a group of people can accomplish when they come together for the benefit of their group and community after losing everything through tragedy and war including friends, family, thier homes, and even the state in which they live in.
if you liked Robinson Crusoe or the Swiss Family Robinson...
...you will like this realistic and practical, yet ultimately soul-searching, guide to life after civilization as we know it. A necessary reboot; let’s get it right this time. Realistic characters; great models of integrity and introspection. A great read; looking forward to the conclusion of the series.
I really enjoyed this book. I just finished Book 3 and starting on Book 4. It tells an interesting story of people who persevere in the hardest of times. I really like the way it is told mainly from the viewpoint of the main character. There were sad moments but also some good and entertaining moments. I will hate to see the story end.
After a time back in the Lower 48, the members of the Community return to Alaska to establish their presence in the state.
With experience and proper planning, the Community is well on its way to being a success. But their new housing numbers increase with both some internment camp rescued women with children, and the survivors of a destroyed Russian settlement attempt.
I have to keep telling myself that this is fiction. The new colony just keeps rolling over the problems, taking everything in stride, mostly. Maybe I have become cynical over the years, I keep expecting some troublemaker to stir something up,maybe it's just me.
Ideally like the characters. They are my kind of people. Working for all to survive, even people the felt were enemies, that turned out to be a part of their comunity
Just okay in comparison to the first two. Rehashing ideas with my interest waning as I read this. All seems way too easy and gawd bless America. Won't bother with book four.
Someone really sucked at their job in this book. I got very tired of the women's names getting mixed up in the story. I liked the story but this hit a nerve.
The books really well written and keeps you hooked. Unfortunately it's in backwards. You have to adjust your page turning to go right to left. It is well worth the effort. I'm hooked.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Alaskans are amazing people. Very independent and resourceful. Would like to see a Book 4!
I really love this series and was so pleased with the start and out cone of this, the third book. I won't say to much as I don't like to give anything away. But it's great and I've really enjoyed it. It's going to take me a little while to get to book four. But I will definitely be reading that too. I'm not ready for it yet though as I can't bare the thought of getting to the end and knowing there's no more.
