This is the 13th novel in the Honor Series of Naval Historical Fiction following the career of Capt. Peter Wake
Politics, love, and war swirl around Captain Peter Wake (USN) in Havana when the USS Maine explodes on a quiet evening in February, 1898. Working with Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt in the tense pre-war days, carrying out a perilous espionage mission inside Cuba, and leading a disastrous raid on the Cuban coast, Wake is in the middle of it all. This is the first of a dynamic trilogy set during the Spanish-American War in the Caribbean, when America changes forever into a global power.

He is best known for his "Honor Series", the popular maritime thrillers which describe the life and career of his protagonist, a U.S. naval officer, Peter Wake, from the American Civil War in Florida, beyond the Spanish-American War in 1898, and well into 2023.
When not traveling for research treks, lecture tours, or book signings, Macomber enjoys cooking exotic cuisines inspired by his novels and sailing quietly among remote islands.
The start of the Spanish American war in Cuba and Peter and Rork are in the middle of the action at Isabella. He manages to get his wife Maria out of Cuba before she can be kidnapped but her son, the priest is killed by one of Peter's enemies. Roosevelt is in the midst of making sure that Peter has converted yachts to take to Cuba and meet up with the resistance. Peter's son in law arrives as an officer of a group of pro Cuban forces and is injured when captured. Peter gets Mario back and then Peter has to deal with one of Maria's sons as an enemy in battle but he manages to capture him and take him back to the US and his mother. Intrigues abound.
I have read all of Robert Macomber's books and have enjoyed each and every one. I'm probably ahead of myself but I was hoping this book would have gone deeper into the Spanish American War than it did. I'm guessing his next book will continue through the war and hopefully include the rest of the Cuban campaign along with the Pacific portion of the war.
