Book 4

Checkmate

They found Angela Hartwell lying in the shallow waters beside the golf course. There was not a mark on her, yet she was dead, strangled. How could that be?

Once again, it's up to Harry Starke to find out. The investigation takes him into a world he's very familiar with, a world of affluence, privilege and... corruption.

To solve the mystery, he must deal with three murders, a beautiful used car dealer, her lovely twin sisters, and a crooked banker. Not to mention Burke and Hare, two crazy repo men who will stop at nothing to protect their employer's interests. There's also the matter of an ingenious, sadistic killer. But nothing is ever quite what it seems....

Book 5

GONE

Emily Johnston is GONE. She's been GONE for more than a week. She's also the daughter of Harry Starke's one-time boss and nemesis, Chattanooga Police Chief Wesley Johnston. Harry and Chief Johnston haven't seen eye-to-eye in a long time, but when Johnston needs help, he knows there's only one man he can turn to.

But Johnston's jurisdiction ends at the city limits and when Emily's body is discovered in a remote part of the county, Harry has to deal with the imperious sheriff, Israel Hands and two incompetent county detectives. So begins an investigation that will take Harry on a wild ride across Signal Mountain, a case that will include a second murder, two cold cases, sex, alternative lifestyles, and deadly danger for Harry and his friends, until... well, as always, there's a twist in the tale.

Book 6

Family Matters

Harry Starke loves a cold case, but this one is really cold, more than a hundred years cold. Family Matters is a whimsical tale, a flight of fancy. It takes place on the lonely coast of Maine, where Amanda, a true believer in the paranormal, has inherited, you guessed it, a haunted house. Or at least that's what the rumors say. It all begins when Amanda inherits the house, substantial assets, and a large sum of money from her grandmother. The windfall comes with a request to look into the disappearance of Elizabeth, Amanda's great-great-grandmother, more than a hundred years ago.

Harry, a skeptic, a down-to-earth investigator who believes only in the facts, has a tough time dealing with Amanda's fantasies? We all know that the imagination can play tricks on a susceptible mind, especially when that mind is under stress. But is it just their imaginations? Could it be something more? You'll have to be the judge.

Book 2 of the Harry Starke series of books include books 4-6 of the individual Harry Starke novels. In Check Mate one of the Country Club members that Harry belong to, along with his father and many other Chattanooga elite population, is found murdered in the river just off the fairway of the seventh hole of the club's golf course. After calling his past police partner Kate Gazzara, Harry winds up having to take lead in the investigation of what turns out to be a murder of the club member. Add to that the fact that the victim's husband died a year earlier from a reported heart attack, which the wife had been saying was actually a murder.
The investigation starts to involve several members of the Country Club, a few that Harry is not familiar with even having been a member for years. There are several twist and turns that will keep the reader trying to guess how and why the wife was killed. Harry also comes across a few other crimes that may be related to the initial crime he is investigating.
In Gone, Harry is asked by his past police chief to look into the disappearance of the chief's daughter. The daughter is attending one of the elite colleges in Chattanooga, and has not been seen for several days. Harry takes on the case as long as Kate Gazzara is assigned by the chief to help Harry. No one at the college seems to want to help Harry and Kate with their investigation, including the over the top college security police force.
Amanda, Harry's girlfriend, becomes involved in the disappearance, due to some questions about some of the past college students. Since the college is not within the city limits of Chattanooga, Harry and Kate must work within the limits placed upon them by the County Sheriff Department as well as the college police limitations. With little to begin with the two must piece together everything the can find to solve the mystery placed before them
Finally in Family Matters we find Harry and Amanda in Maine at a possible haunted hotel that Amanda has just inherited from her grandmother. Both Harry and Amanda take time off from the responsibilities in Chattanooga to look at the hotel, which according to the attorney handling the grandmother's will, is in desperate need of a lot of upkeep and care.
After arriving at the hotel, Amanda and Harry both start to wonder about their sanity. Each of them hear and see things that they are not sure what is going on. Since Amanda's grandmother had requested that Amanda, with Harry's help, to find out several questions about Amanda's past relatives, who has owned the hotel for a little over one hundred years.
Family Matters is not one of your normal Harry Starke “who done it” books. If you like a Halloween type of story (even though it is not the time of Halloween) then you will enjoy seeing how Harry and Amanda work on what is happening at the hotel with only their own wits to go on.

I received these books from the author as a late entrant into his ARC Team.  After reading books 1-3 I assumed books 4-6 would be as good as the first set.  I was not disappointed.  Blair Howard has a wonderful writing style that brings you right into the story.  His characters are full bodies each with their own personality.  His style is descriptive and somewhat graphic without being horrifying.
Book 4 - Checkmate
Another dead body, another person Harry knows.  This time it's a young woman found dead right by the golf course.  Another life senselessly lost.  Angela was a fairly recent widow, a widow who could not and would not believe her young husband died of a heart attack.  Although there is little evidence, can Harry figure out what happened to Angela?  Will his conclusions lead to the proof Angela sought, the proof that her husband was actually murdered, as was she?  Harry will be delving into people of wealth, influence, greed, and corruption (again) - can he figure out what happened to Angela without getting himself or his new love Amanda killed?
Book 5 - Gone
When Police Chief Wes Johnston comes to Harry after hours, Harry knows something bad has happened.  After leaving the Chattanooga PD years ago, their relationship has been rocky at best.  But Chief Johnston's daughter, Emily, has gone missing.  A young woman Harry remembers as a child and he can't say no.  Emily has been missing for a week and the trail is cold.  Harry will find himself immersed in a dark and dangerous world where nothing is as it seems, up against secrets regarding sex and alternative lifestyles that some people in high places would like to keep buried.  But will Harry find Emily?  And if/when he does, what condition will she be in.  From beginning to end this tale has some wicked twists and turns.
Book 6 - Family Matters
Everyone loves a cold case, but centuries cold?  Harry's love Amanda has inherited the family "fortune".  Amanda's maternal grandmother has passed away and left Amanda with a substantial fortune, but it comes with a "haunted" hotel, which apparently was the family home to Amanda's great-great grandparents over 100 years ago.  There is a mystery afoot when it's found that Great Great Grandma disappeared, and Great Grandma on down would have nothing to do with said hotel.  Amanda and Harry go to check it out and find themselves wrapped up in a mystery that seems unsolvable.  A fun read, with a lot of love and a little whimsy!

Gone,
When Harry learns that Emily, daughter of chief Johnston has gone missing he is straight on the case. He’s known her since she was a little girl. Little does he expect what he finds as he follows in her last known steps. Then there is a period where she is just ‘gone’ but when her body turns up close to her college it’s all looking awfully strange. Harry with Kate on hand to assist in an investigation is pulled into a world of corruption and sex trafficking and at least two previous disappearances. Blair Howard weaves a wonderful tale of a dark world based at a ladies prestige college, involving a private army and local law enforcement. The answers are not at all what Harry or indeed the reader expect to find. Riveting! Worth every star it’s awarded.
All the Harry Starke Kate Gazzara books are really good reads. Stand-alone but also good if you want. to understand the characters development through the series. Each one riveting in its own right. Blair Howard is not allowed to stop writing. I enjoy his books too much.

This set will have you guessing who done it in each of the stories.

The 1st story deals with the death of a woman whose husband died a year earlier in an unexpected heart attack. Harry is requested to assist and discovers the killer of the woman as well as the husband that died earlier.

The 2nd story deals with Harry investigating the disappearance of the police chief's daughter who winds up murdered. As Harry looks into this case he finds that he sees similarities to missing persons based on a conversation he had with Amanda, his girlfriend and who is a investigative reporter on the TV station Channel 7.

The last story puts Harry in a situation that he hasn't had previously. His girlfriend Amanda has just inherited an estate from her grandmother which includes a hotel in Maine. Amanda asks Harry to come with to see the hotel and discover what happened to her great-grandmother.

A mystery box indeed!

I read the first two volumes in this boxed set with pleasure. The third one, not so much. Less believable on all levels; a thinner story as well. In spite of Harry vacillating between Bon vivant and copspeak street guy, the novels were entertaining and original. Blair Howard seems a likeable fellow that has had many poignant moments in his own life and is able to transfer them to his readers adroitly. I would recommend this set to anyone who prefers not to be assailed by steamy sex scenes or a constant barrage of foul language. Readers who enjoy the unusual, the unique, and the presentation of issues that encourage mind visuals will love these books, I believe. Some careful editing would be welcome.

GONE by Blair Howard...

KUDOS for a mystery well-done…

I definitely intend to read more by Blair Howard. This was my first and I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style, wonderful characters, attention to detail, and realistic dialogue. In fact, the whole process of investigation was handled so convincingly that you feel like you are involved each step of the way. The story and action just flows from page to page, intertwining personal relationships and character development with solving crime. I’ve come to like Harry Starke a lot along with Amanda, his love companion, and his investigative team. Although the guilty parties lingered in the back of my mind, I was caught up in the process of elimination and was hooked right up until the end when Harry has his epiphany.

Checkmate (Harry Stark, #4), my twenty-second read from author Blair Howard. Well-written and enjoyable, edge of your seat detective fiction.

Gone (Harry Starke, #5), my twenty-third read from author Blair Howard. Well-written and enjoyable, edge of your seat detective fiction.

Family Matters (Harry Starke #6), my twenty-fourth read from author Blair Howard. Well-written and enjoyable, edge of your seat haunted house/detective fiction. So far each book in the series has been batter than its predecessor. I look forward to Retribution (Harry Starke #7). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Love this character

Blair Howard's clever writing style makes Harry Starke dark but at the same time very real and amusing. I particularly enjoy the asides (mostly in italics) that show the character's thoughts. Have read all 6 books in the series so far and have really enjoyed them all (the 6th one though the least) and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. A must read for people who like fast paced, clever and amusing dialogue and intriguing detective plots.

3 very different books

These are three very different books and they are interesting. Harry’s girlfriend still has to big a part in the books. Harry comes across just a little henpecked, and in a way it is how he interacts with all the women in the books. The first two have a well developed story line with very good characters. The third book is a little mixed up and doesn’t go anywhere, plus the book doesn’t have a good ending. The author just ended it. The second book is the best, but the first two make the books worth reading.

Harry Starke never seems to have to deal with the mundane things in life like grocery shopping, house cleaning or laundry but I guess that is why he is like James Bond or something. A smooth, crime-solving ladies man. The books are light hearted and mostly entertaining. Incidentally it would be nice to know more about his mother as she never gets a mention. Anyway I have enjoyed the series so far...all except book 6 which was just a bit pointless and weird.

Harry Starke, books 4-6 - by Blair Howard

From one mystery to another, Harry and his team along with Lt . Kate Garazza, continue to resolve mysteries that have eluded others for years. Harry is a hard board PI, former partner of Kate and a ten year veteran on the CPD. Harry's problem, he doesn't care where the evidence leads, he's going to get to the person or persons responsible. Great reading.

Hard to write review on this series of books. Some are 4 stars & others 2 Star. Some are pretty good & keep me coming back (I’m on #11 as write this) and then there are several “fillers” -almost throw aways - in between the well thought out stories. Enjoy the characters, altho sometimes Harry is too much of a man’s figment of indestructibility & sexuality. Kinda like a Jason Bourne / James Bond with out the spy training. Harry has some skills but not those level skills.

Eye Opening

You have three well written mysteries and Harry and friends keep solving them. Amanda and Harry are going along well in the romance department. Kate is trying to move on but still has some issues with the whole thing of Harry and .... Now you will find that unusual people will turn to Harry for help. Harry is now facing some twists to his safety and it rolls over onto his friends.
Enjoy the books as I did !

Interesting read a Starke fan

I enjoy reading Harry Starke, but he is a little over the top. Mr Howard researches his locations well and that adds to the stories immensely.

Although he's no Reacher or Dirty Harry, he's good none the less. Congratulations, Blair, fine stories with Harry Stark. Oh, by the way, congrats on Harry's marriage, I takes some of the shallow playboy out.

Great stories ....on to the next

Easy to read and follow the story it doesn’t flip between past and present etc which I hate.... a lot of repeated detail which is good for the casual reader but a bit annoying to those who’ve read it several times...and some details are a bit too in depth but maybe it’s because I’m English!... all in all am really enjoying the box sets and slowly working my way through....

This is a terrific box set with three great murder mysteries. Some of the content is rather disturbing, and there is a fair amount of sexual content, particularly in Gone, so it’s not for everyone. I listened to the audiobook of the set, and I would recommend it to those who enjoy the genre and are not put off. My personal favorite was Gone, and my least favorite was Family Matters which doesn’t quite fit with the series.

The narrator of the audiobooks does a good job bringing the books to life.

I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook, this is my honest and voluntary review.

A good read

I have enjoyed the first six Harry Stark books and will order the next three when I finish here. I really enjoyed all six. You learn to really like Harry and Amber and at times feel the need to give them a hand. They are a fast read but you will be glad you took the time.

Love the Harry Starke Series. I am on my third set, Boxed set 7-9. The writer makes you feel as though you are right in the room with the rest of the characters. Started with the first set (1-3) and just continued with the rest of the books in this series. Its exciting and hard to put the book down. Each novel in the series covers different types of cases.

Good

All three of these stories are good. I epically liked the third one it was not about HarryStark investing a murder or two as such, it was about Amanda and her history, after she inherited an old house and a lot of money. They try to solve the disappearance of her great great grandmother.

Family Matters:
Now this Harry Stark was different and I really liked it!!! Delving into Amanda‘s family history and finding out who her ancestors were is fascinating! I would’ve wanted to explore all of that massive monstrosity! Mr. Blair can write an excellent story; intriguing and exciting, a complete page turner.

Mixed Feelings

Enjoyed books four and five just as much as the first three. Kept me engaged throughout, good storylines and well recommended. Book six however was a detour for two of the main characters and a stretch for me in terms of enjoyment and believability. Still enjoying the authors style, so undeterred I am heading to book seven!

As I've said in other places...I just like this Harry Starke. He's funny, smart and this time he's...well that should be saved for later. As far as books 4-6 I think I enjoyed them even more than the first three. Just can't seem to get enough of them.

Great Series

Great stories. I love the main character , Harry Starke. The quintessential detective . . . rich, handsome and smart. The only issue I have is too many typos. Doesn't anyone proofread books anymore?

Good stories well written. Much more editing needed on grammar. Words were left out in many places or incorrectly arranged.

These stories are well written. Much more proof reading and writing is needed. There are many grammatical errors and missing or misplaced words.
