From the beginning of this novel, the author managed to grab my attention and suck me into his story. Getting to know Grace Backer and learning about the loves and losses of her life, I quickly became attached to this strong, determined, independent woman who put others before herself, and would do anything to protect her boy. Tom is such a clever young man, but when he finds himself falsely accused of a horrific crime, his only chance of survival is to leave his mother and his home behind, and travel to Russia. Here we get to fall in love with Tom's character as he builds up his own family and business, and we get to understand the driving force that will impact every move of his future. Experiencing tragedy and loss, and with many secrets of his own, there is a parallel between Grace's past and Tom's present - loss, tragedy, and secrecy, even though their paths are very different. But as Tom arrives back in London to finish the job that he has started, will everything come full circle? Will Tom finally get the closure that he needs? Or will the secrets from the past destroy everything?

FOR THE LOVE OF GRACE by Andy Blackman is a gripping, emotional, and hypnotic read. Overflowing with love, loss, tragedy, and vengeance, I found myself swept along in this dangerous adventure, and I could not put this book down until I reached the end. With unusual friendships, quirky and shady accomplices, and enemies around every corner, FOR THE LOVE OF GRACE by Andy Blackman is an addictive read, and I really cannot wait to read more from this author. Definitely a must-read!!

I’ll be honest, this isn’t a book I would ordinarily choose to read if I was perusing Amazon as it’s premise is not really for me. However, when I was approached to read and review, there was something about the concept which piqued my interest enough to say yes – and I am glad I did! This is an enjoyable read about family honour and revenge.

Tom finds himself on a cargo ship bound for Russia after he is accused of the murder of his best friend, his mother Grace knows that he will go down for Sally’s murder regardless of his innocence therefore calls in a favour from Ivor Sharapova, a Russian sailor she nursed back to health during the war. It is on this journey that Tom bonds with Ivor’s son, Sebastian and they form a lifelong friendship and business together. He also falls in love with Sebastian’s sister, Natalie therefore truly becomes one of the Sharapova’s.

I don’t wish to ruin the plot by sharing the events that lead to Tom to seek revenge however it’s fair to say that the criminal undertone of the Sharapova family comes to light with some horrendous consequences which results in Tom showing that he is now one of them and will do anything protect their name.

This book spans a vast amount of time – although I’m not truly sure as to how much time – to basically tell Tom’s life story. This happens midway through chapters where a new paragraph will start with, for example ‘Years later….’. Whilst there was vast amounts of time omitted from the story, it was easy to follow as long as you had picked up on the time shift.

The passion of Tom certainly comes through in his quest for revenge, however I feel that he accepted the illegal activities of the family as bit to easily. Also, his character changed so much from when he was the kind, intelligent boy in East London to the man he ended up being in Russia.

I did enjoy this story, some elements were a little too convenient but a good read nonetheless with a wonderful ending.

When I read the book description of ‘For The Love of Grace’ I knew this was a book I liked to read. I’m not really sure why since when I read the book description I don’t think you really get the right idea about this book. But I'm so glad this book got me intrigued. Because this read was really worth it.

In ‘For The Love of Grace’ we meet Nurse Grace and her son Tom. Grace lived a hard life. Living during the war, taking care of wounded soldiers and fellow citizens and losing a lot of people she loved. Even taking care of her son isn’t going easy. Grace does everything she can but Tom is in the wrong place at the wrong time and soon finds himself in big trouble.
Tom leaves for Russia and soon finds himself on a better path. He has good friends, a thriving business and a woman he loves. But soon everything changes and Tom finds himself in a totally different world. A world of violence he seems to fit right in.

‘For The Love of Grace’ was a very impressive read. From the moment I started reading I was fascinated by the characters. Reading about Grace’s life as a nurse during the war was definitely one of my favorite parts of this story. It was just so touching to read. Learning about her life and her secrets, it really kept me on the edge of my seat.

Tom’s character was one you just don’t seem to get figured out. From a very young age he is just so mysterious and with every passing page I kept wondering what would become of him. This book definitely was a suspense novel. The Author wrote this book in a kind of way which kept you on the edge of you seat without really knowing or understanding why.

I found ‘For The Love of Grace’ a very impressive read. The characters where memorable and the writing was just really good. I would have liked to get a view more hints about where this book was going, but I suppose this makes the book even better.
One other down part.. This book deserves a better and more gripping cover if you ask me. But overall a great read!

If the way you enter this world is any indication of how your life will turn out – the grief surrounding your birth amidst WWII, abandoned by your mother, accused of murder before your childhood is over - who would you become? No wonder Tom has a ruthless streak in his character, defining his future, shaping him into a man on a lethal mission, destined to cause death. Yet his inspiration and motivation for the manhunt is love – can it be?

The first pages draw you into the extraordinary life of Tom, who grew up in the post WWII years in London’s East End. He’s back in England but why the reader has yet to find out. Both MI5 and MI6 are on his track and they provide us with the basic information about Tom: his surname is Sharapova and he is an “expert in all weapons, proficient in all forms of martial arts” which comes in handy when you are “chief enforcer for Vladimir Sharapova, boss of the Ukrain/Odessa Mafia.” No wonder Tom is a man much feared.

Back to WWII we find nurse Grace in a London hospital, where she meets her best friend Julie. Grace reconnects with her childhood friend Tom Backer, they fall in love and get married. When the war comes to the little hide-out where pregnant Grace and her mother-in-law live, the results are disastrous, leaving Grace to grief over the loss of her unborn child and the death of her mother-in-law. As if she hasn’t suffered enough – Tom is killed in action.

Julie leaves her newborn baby with Grace and leaves. Grace names him Tom and the two of them move back to London’s East End. There they live peacefully, not knowing that before Tom reaches adulthood he will be branded a murderer and has to flee the country. Grace falls back upon a promise from a Russian sailor, whose wounds she stitched. Little does Grace know that, although it will bring Tom in safety, it will also confront him with great danger: captain Ivor Sharapova brings Tom in contact with his nephew Sebastian and the rest of his family in Odessa.

Tom finds his way in Odessa and becomes a member of the Sharapova family by marrying Sebastian's sister Natasha. They are blessed with a beautiful daughter Grace and S&T Imports, the business Tom and Sebastian founded, started prospering. This partly due to the contacts of another uncle, Vlad Sharapovan. Then fate invervenes - a terrible murder. Tom suffers the greatest loss of his life. Now Vlad tells him he's the boss of the Ukraine/Odessa mafia - and all becomes clear to Tom whose destiny is shaped: he is a man on the hunt, seeking revenge.

What follows is a adventurous, touching and revengeful story. Will Tom find revenge? Can you live a life based on hatred, on vengeance without crushing your soul? Will he ever see Grace, whom he feels is his mother, again? As we spot in the beginning of the book, Tom is being watched, both MI5 and MI6 hold him responsible for 200 assassinations worldwide. They are unlikely to underestimate the extremely dangerous chief enforcer of the Ukraine/Odessa Mafia.

The book is a fascinating and interesting read, although in my opinion there were superfluous lines and repetitions that could easily have been left out. What truly amazed me was that I felt sympathy for Tom despite his being a murderer. He seeks revenge, but never looks into his heart to find his own guilt and responsibility for establishing himself close to the mafia with all of its connections. His doings caused others to look upon him and the family as a target. I said it is a touching story, but when you think about it, a murderer seeking revenge, how can it be? And yet strangely enough it is - a wonderful tale of friendship, love and loyalty.

Thank goodness I had a sixth sense about For the Love of Grace by Andy Blackman, because neither the cover or the blurb made me anticipate what was to come. I was quickly captured, wondering how Tom will unravel his complicated life and find a happy ending.

Tom grew up poor and hungry, with a thirst for knowledge that was aided by a photographic memory. He is a gentle, loving boy, devoted to his mother, until…

His entire life changed in the blink of an eye. Circumstances beyond our control can cause our lives to take a turn we never could have anticipated and this is just what happened to Tom.

I feel so much sympathy for Grace, his mother, that deserves sainthood in my book. She is a selfless, loving person, giving to others just because of their need. How much pain is such a wonderful person supposed to endure? I feel *** is not doing right by her.

I am halfway in and my heart is breaking for Tom. He is a good guy caught up in bad situations through no fault of his own, just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Life deals him some bad breaks, but this 30 minutes was the worst of his life and nothing would stop him from exacting his revenge. And I am with him! I want to pick up a gun and hunt them down like the brutal savages they are.

I love when a man is bad and good at the same time. Know what I mean? Where do you draw the line? I sympathize with Tom, I feel his pain through Andy Blackman’s words. Andy does a fantastic job of taking me sky high only to drop me, splatting my feelings all over the ground.

I knew from the beginning that something really bad, tragic, would have to happen to take him down the road of an assassin and I kept waiting for it to happen. The suspense never let me rest. The writing created a sense of impending doom.

The peripheral characters are not written just for support. They all play an important part in his life, whether they are his friends or on the receiving end of his wrath, but this is Tom’s story.

I don’t know why I didn’t see the ending coming. I should have seen it. I guess I was so wrapped up in Tom, that I really didn’t want it to end, because I just could not find a way for it to end the way I wanted.

My only complaint…the book is too short. I would have loved to be with Tom through his training to become such a proficient killer. I would have loved a few other parts of the story to be fleshed out more, giving me more details. Maybe this is just because I didn’t want the story to end. BUT…it doesn’t.

I definitely want to check out Book II, The Second Son!!!!

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this book it’s tagged mystery/thriller but it’s a lot more than that. This is a story of love, loyalty, tragedy, secrets and underworld nastiness.

As soon as I ‘met’ Grace I was drawn to her, she lived a simple life in the east end of London during the 2nd war, she married her childhood sweetheart, found herself pregnant but loss would soon befall her.

She and her friend Julie were nursing, complete chalk and cheese .. Julie eventually has a baby but circumstances mean she leaves him with Grace.

Grace did her utmost to nurture and love Tom and he grew into a remarkable young man who adored his mother as much as she did him. Yet again trouble was at their door, Tom is accused of murder. As only a loving mother could do she called in a favour from a previous patient who she had tended with care, he agreed to keep Tom safe. This involved leaving the country .. an ordeal for mother and son.

Tom boards a ship to Russia with Ivor Sharapova, on this journey his life will change forever.

Tom Sharapova as he becomes soon makes a successful life for himself, he is surrounded by friends, marries and has a baby but once again his luck runs out. Struggling with the secrets his ‘family’ hold forces him to seek revenge and go on a rampage before his life comes full circle .. but at what cost?

I really enjoyed getting immersed in this, the relationships are tangible, love and loyalty ring true but I did have a slight problem believing in Tom during the middle of the book. While he had a mission to complete it seemed to be on a loop. I don’t want to give any spoilers. It almost became too simple for him and he displays no guilt.

There were moments that made me tear up, and even though Tom is like the terminator he still has a strong belief and love for his mother. Can he return to England, will she know him .. and why does MI5 want him. Some tense periods and many secrets.

This a great debut thriller and I look forward to another book from him hopefully. Thanks to the author and Clink Street Publishing/Authoright for my copy.

So the book mainly follows the life of Tom Backer..he’s not had the easiest start in life but he’s smart..very smart. Unfortunately life has more to throw at him and his life is turned upside down again and again.

This was quite an interesting story that bounces around the timeline a little to give you glimpse into the past to learn more about Tom but also is mother Grace.

The story for me had two distinct storylines.. The first being Grace, her part of the story was emotional and intense,  she was by far my favourite character. The second tale being Tom’s which is action focused and gripping at times, I didn’t fully warm to him, he adapts too easy to his situations but I think this is down to the fact he’s clearly a gifted human so sees things differently than the others might.

This is a tale of passion and vengeance, at times things flow too easily for my own tastes but I enjoyed following Tom’s journey of destruction. There’s a good twist at the end of the book which I really enjoyed and it really tied things up for me.

There’s certainly enough meat on the bones with this one for me to be interested to see where the author goes next.

For the Clink Street Spring Reading Week I chose to read 'For the Love of Grace' as it sounded like my kind of book. From the offset you get drawn in to Tom's world and you begin to understanding his way of thinking. Tom is a wanted man - that much is blatantly obvious from the start by Andy Blackman has been clever in how much information he gives you upfront about Toms life and the reason for his high profile.

'For the Love of Grace is a relatively quick read at just over 200 pages long but there is a lot of action and story packed into those pages. I did feel that the writing style felt a little basic and sometimes felt repetitive which let the story down for me.

The ending definitely clawed back a heart though as it dud come as a surprise and a twist I was not expecting. I just wish the writing style was a little more advanced and then maybe 'For the Love of Grace' would have a four heart review here instead!
