“I Am Gotham” part four. When Gotham City falls prey to true evil, will Batman be abandoned by the new heroes Gotham and Gotham Girl? The Dark Knight must decide who to entrust with the safety of his beloved city if he hopes for any of its citizens to survive.
In a way Gotham turned out to be the bad guy in the end. Psycho Pirate made Gotham psycho, and now he wants to destroy all of Gotham. His sister is a mess repeating I am scared over and over also thanks to Psycho Pirate. Someone kill Amanda Waller she just keeps making things worse and she doesn't really care. That woman is awful. I loved that scene when her officer was telling her how Batman won't connect the killings to them and how they are a thousand feet underground and the different security measures, and she is like "Batman is standing behind you 🤦"
Only "The Wall' could stand up to the Batman, even if caught with her hands in the cookie jar. Amanda Waller may just be the most human character in this book. That makes her the one with the less redeeming value. Two rogue agents under her purview just turned the hero Gotham homicidal and she doesn't even give a damn.
If I woulda remembered how last issue ended, this woulda made more sense to me. That's my bad, guys, that's on me. Last issue ended with Gotham arriving at a burning building and being confronted by Hugo Strange and Psycho Pirate. This issue starts with the aftermath of that confrontation, with only Batman arriving to piece together the events. I remembered the villains, I didn't remember the location or that there were a swat team in the background, which is important. I could still piece together what happened but In my confusion I also I didn't see any redeeming qualities from this issue. It would of been a 2 star rating. With a quick look at last issues ending, and knowing for sure Gotham WAS in the building with the swat team, I can see this woulda been a slow burn with a sense of dread in the atmosphere, and a very good character turn. If only I woulda remembered, I coulda gave an accurate rating.
So I guess I was half-right about the Gotham duo?? I dunno. It wasn't what I was thinking it was going to be, but, sadly, it also wasn't better than what I was expecting. I do like the interaction between Gotham and Batman though.
Also, how is Amanda Waller so skinny in this book, and then... heavier in Suicide Squad? I need her to give me whatever level of clearance she has so I can get that top secret trick.
Well this was really an average story with very interruped and confusing pace , the mystery of Task force X's involvement were revealed but other than that this was absolutely rubbish with Batman doing a lot of things apparently in order to get to Amanda Waller but as per King we were never supposed to know what he did , meanwhile for some reason the new protagonists are now gone rogue which i really applaud coz let's be frank nobody like them anyways . Meanwhile the whole Tom King run Batman stories is filled with Jason bourne-esque mysteries that shows Tom King's CIA past and yet the story so far has had very little Batman Action , Batman has just been there doing Ninja stealths and impressing everyone who surround him and granted that's cool to read but it's cool only once when done to death it becomes very annoying very soon .
The Art still shows no sign of improvement and the Batman's art style especially keeps bugging me as he looks very awkward physically .It doesn't take a lot to make a good batman comics , infact it can be very easy with the plethora of storyline and rogues gallary and yet every author that takes the drivers seat for Batman has tried to improve the story-line and Tom King's predecessor was the most successful in achieving that meanwhile Tom King has so far failed in any improvement in fact he seems to be taking the issue to down bottom , right now Batman stories feel like Green Arrow or Iron Man stories and there's a reason those were less successful .King's run has been plagued with distraction from Batman to other things and a very inconsistent run of story which sometimes improve a lot and other weeks just become depressing , with the upcoming crossover Monster-men appearing from next week , here's hoping things improve
And please for the love of everything Batman can we stop destroying the Batmobiles .
Just when I thought that the Batman series is going to have that whiff of inspiration, everything went super nasty and heavy in this fourth issue of the DC Rebirth Batman. I should have known better. This is Batman's series.
What I really wished in an issue four is a Gotham versus Psycho Pirate showdown. I want to see this villain in action. Instead, expositions have been done by a conversation between Amanda Waller and the Batman (props to mentioning the New52 Batman story arcs). The story is still cohesive and smooth though, but Tynion could have given more depth to the Gotham and Gotham Girl characters, instead of them succumbing easily to a psychological breakdown induced by the pirate.
Each issue, there's someone who say that the monster are coming. I get it. Something big will happen in Gotham. Detective Comics hints that as well.
With the direction this series is taking, my vote goes to Detective Comics for having a superior story arc between the two.
This story is moving way too fast. We already know Gotham corrupts. Reiterating that point so quickly just feels like going through the motions because we haven't had time to care about the new heroes' downfall. Perhaps unsurprisingly considering King's history, the best stuff is the government conspiracy plot. Really considering dropping this series until a new writer comes in a few years from now.
The issue really did a 180 on the setup, I was confused with the setup as I completely forgot the previous issues ending. I'm really into this turn of events and can feel so interesting arcs coming up. DC are ticking the strengths at the moment but sadly not with the film series if you hear about the reviews.
The scope of David Finch's art for this issue in particular is outstanding, and that is not at all an understatement. Certain illustrations stood out, most notably pages that depicted gore and violence. I'm never that squeamish when it comes to seeing blood and guts in any medium I consume such as in television shows and comic books, but Finch's illustrations definitely made me stop and stare for a while just to appreciate the quality and breadth that he had contributed solely for this fourth issue. I don't think Tom King's story would be nearly as effective in form if Finch wasn't the artist who drew its scenes to life.
The fourth installment for I Am Gotham was provocative, especially since it made such a complete turn for the worst since last issue. The body count is unapologetically high and committed by the one person I never wanted to become bloodthirsty and possessed. The detestably fruitful alliance between Dr. Hugo Strange and Psycho Pirate yielded some terrible consequences. These two assholes managed to capture and inflict serious psychological damage on aspiring superheroes Gotham and Gotham Girl (Hank and Claire) who did not stand a chance so now the former has went on a psychotic rampage while the latter was reduced into a sniveling weak mess and had to be put under Alfred's care.
It was a rather shocking escalation. I know things will go bad---but I did not expect that it would become even worse so soon. This was an overall spectacular issue, given the tight suspenseful drama at its core and Finch's impressive body of work for each page. King was also winning me over as a writer at this point.
However, there are a few things that didn't make sense to me, such as the participation of Amanda Waller in all this clusterfuck and apparently an appearance by the Suicide Club might just take place somewhere down the pipeline. But I digress.
What I want to tackle is Hank's regressed state which happened so quickly and so violently that I had to flip back and forth between pages just to make sure I'm witnessing such gruesome events unfold for real, and that they were all because of his doing. From a promising earnest idealist, Hank had now become a deranged killer who are doing things that go against everything he wanted to stand for as Gotham and according to what he wanted to emulate from Batman. It was mortifying and I hope to all the gods this can be fixed soon because I actually like him and his sister. Claire also needs to get back in shape and stop crying because I've grown tired of females being portrayed as broken damsels after a villain had took possession of their minds or some shit like that.
I was pretty disappointed that she just broke down into an emotional mess. Not that going on a rampage like her brother did would be an improvement in her characterization but at least then she would be doing something instead of clinging onto Duke's arms for consolation. But then again, it needs to be pointed out that Gotham Girl seems to exist because Claire herself was said to be mirroring whatever her big brother wants to do, so she doesn't have a lot of things going for her in the first place already, so is it really such a surprise she would be so easy to manipulate and discard? I sure hope King can fairly resolve Claire's part in the equation. I know Hank well enough but I don't really know that much about Claire.
On more pressing matters, Batman tried his best to get through Hank but he was beyond reasoning with at this point.
Now that is some heavy Break-The-Cutie stuff
I can't wait to see how this drama would resolve and devolve yet again in the next issue.
"Lane... The damn Bat-man is behind you." was the most badass yet hilarious moment of this comic. Poor Lane's gonna look over his shoulders every five seconds for the rest of his life!
This new arc is starting to fall into place, although I'm still not very convinced by the new characters. King's Batman is interesting, I like having him in-between his usual places (a.k.a completely broken or super badass Bats) and it's nice to see him acknowledge his trauma when he's talking to Gotham. Speaking of the devil, I also like the confusion between Gotham-guy and Gotham-city, it suits Bruce's character to share personal stuff with Gotham, to look up to him/it while fearing&doubting him/it... Still not a fan of the character, but I like what it does to Batman and all the parallels established too.

The overall story is good but a little confusing at times since comics often skip small stories and let you piece it together. I am very excited to see what happens next.
Enjoying the story still. I like the timing of the jokes (you should NOT send it to the car). Though I felt the corruption a bit forced/sudden, and the future romantic set up between Mr. Thomas and Gotham Girl to be obvious. But those don't take away from how fresh this title is.

I have been on the edge of my seat through these first 4 books.Top notch writing and artwork. The confrontation between Gotham and Batman was outstanding."The monster men are coming" every time i hear this i get more and more nervous.
Batman arrives at a burning building containing the bodies of 27 dead soldiers and a shock-ridden Gotham Girl. Gotham himself is nowhere to be seen, but he may be under the influence of Hugo Strange and his cohort Psycho Pirate. Batman needs to track down Gotham and handle this escalating situation. And how do Amanda Waller and “Task Force X” fit into all of this?
As the plot develops through this issue, you just feel tense and uncomfortable as a reader. It’s kind of like a horror movie where you’re never sure what’s coming around the next corner, but you’re pretty sure it won’t be good. King builds this feeling throughout the issue and gives us no real relief. Again, King also skips over a lot of the investigative parts of this story to just pop forward - you don’t actually get to see Batman do any real detective work, he just gets to the end of the puzzle and we need to assume he did all the legwork. As someone who enjoys a procedural this sort of irritates me, especially when several people refer to Batman as “Detective” throughout the storyline. While this is a “superhero” book, one of Batman’s biggest skills is detection, so skipping over a lot of that feels kind of wrong.
The art continues to be top notch here. Some really nice layouts and close-up panels that really add to the intensity of the story. There are also a few big, bold splash pages that wow the eye as well. Finch has proven that he’s really good at those.
Overall, a compelling issue that pulls you forward in the story and makes you want to reach for the next issue.
Things get intense real quick. Gotham has murdered 27 soldiers under the manipulation of psycho-pirate. Batman finds him. Gotham's parents are murdered by soldier who has seen his face and tracked his family down. G murders him. He plans to murder Gotham city next.
Best issue so far. Psychologically thrilling and has made a stale story so far very interesting.
Do you think Tom King ever tells his kids "everyone gets a chance to be brave?" If not, someone should. That's some damn good pep talk right there. 👍 Aside from a jarringly quick cut between scenes this was a solid issue. Everything gets revealed and itself ramps up in drama. Also- best "Batman shows up behind someone" moment ever. 👌
Strange has gone rogue with Psycho Pirate. Gotham finds his parents dead and freaks out. He says he can kill the city before it hurts anyone else-180 hero to villain or just still being influenced by PP?
