An engaging manhwa about a principled grocery store manager who is concerned about his corporation's treatment of employees and the no-nonsense, street-level labor organizer and activist he turns to for help. Though set in Korea, a lot of the problems shown are universal, and this book is a good reminder of why labor unions are so important everywhere.

October 14, 2024I have been waiting for something like this. I love unions and I always back them, my parents didn’t raise a scab. I can see why people didn’t like this volume, it was a little jumbled and labor terminology can be kind of confusing, but I’m so excited that this is being translated into English.

Єдина причина, чому манхва «Шило» опинилася в моїх руках — це ім’я художника. Мені сподобався «Поклик пекла», в тому числі виразністю стилю Чхве Ґюсока. І коли побачив анонс його авторської роботи про профспілки та робітничий рух, то виникло бажання прочитати цю роботу. Та були сумніви. Ну серйозно, історія про трудове право в Південній Кореї? Але цей том зумів зробити неможливе: затягнути і змусити співпереживати.
Події відбуваються на межі 1990-х і 2000-х, у Південній Кореї, яка тільки-но оговтується після азійської фінансової кризи. У цьому складному соціальному кліматі з’являється Ґу ҐоШин — харизматичний борець за права працівників, що керує маленькою компанію для консультацій. Його діяльність — це не просто паперова боротьба, а справжні операції проти несправедливості на заводах, офісах і крамницях. Саме так він зустрічає Лі Суїна — колишнього військового, а тепер менеджера в супермаркеті, якого змушують цькувати підлеглих, щоб ті самі звільнилися.
Я досі не розумію, як манхва про профспілки й закулісні ігри роботодавців зуміла зацікавити мене. Сухі теми — трудове право, зловживання в компаніях, страх перед звільненням — перетворюються тут на напружену драму, де емоції киплять досить сильно. Загальна сюжетна лінія жива й переконлива.
Ґу ҐоШин — без сумніву, серце цього тому. Не дарма він знаходиться на титульній сторінці. Його методи, впевненість, готовність ризикувати — все це робить його чимось на кшталт правозахисного "супергероя". Але виявилося також, що головна сюжетна лінія крутиться і довкола Лі Суїна. І хоча його минуле спочатку здається «зайвим» відступом, зрештою саме він проходить складний шлях — від військового до менеджера, який сумнівається у правильності багатьох вчинків, і нарешті до людини, здатної чинити опір. Разом вони — ідеальна пара протилежностей у боротьбі проти системи.
Про художній стиль Чхве Ґюсока важко щось нове написати. Вже знайомий по «Поклику пекла», тут він зберігає точність, виразність і емоційність, які притаманні його роботам. Сцени корпоративних кабінетів, зібрань, навіть протестів виглядають динамічно й детально. Хороша й впевнена візуальна робота.
Чи рекомендувати манхву про профспілки? Ніколи б не подумав, що буду це писати. Але так — «Шило» варто спробувати. По-перше, це якісна соціальна драма. По-друге, вона має харизматичних героїв і живий сюжет. По-третє, це ще одне нагадування, що боротьба за гідність — сильно перегукується із багатьма нашими подіями. І, врешті, я сам здивований з цього всього. Історія змусила мене хвилюватися за персонажів, обурюватися разом із ними й бажати продовження.

Set in the latter half of the 2000s, against the backdrop of “Pureumi”, a fictional superstore chain in South Korea, the work unfolds with a focus on two protagonists: Yi Su-in, who has been instructed by the corporation to dismiss workers unjustly; and Gu Go-sin, a labor activist.
A man of principles, Su-in is someone who cannot restrain outspoken criticism and is constantly at odds with the world. Though he has quit a career in the armed forces to live quietly and chosen an ordinary job, he once again clashes against the world because the company has ordered him to drive out employees by force.
Aiding Su-in is Go-sin, a cool-headed and deft labor activist who runs a labor counseling center near the Pureumi chain. Unlike Su-in, who has difficulty getting along with people and sternly sticks to rules, he approaches others without hesitation and even resorts to extreme measures at times to accomplish goals.
Together, Su-in and Go-sin will oppose the manipulation and moral harassment to which the employees are cynically subjected. The process through which these two figures remind ordinary, diligent workers of their rights and bring change together will fire up readers.
Remarkable in mastery and brilliance, author Choi Gyu-seok (The Hellbound) depicts with finesse all the adventures of this shock of two worlds, and at the same time offers an amazing portrait of a complex Korean society, crossed by multiple tensions.

My Review: I'm the target audience for this story. I had a hard time following it because my sequential-art skills are pretty poor. I'm working to get myself past that barrier, but this story challenged my determination hard. I can't get to a full four stars because if I, fully on the side of these union guys, can't keep focused, what's the less-convinced reader going to do?
It seems odd to provide the US-market reviewers with Korean language artwork.
Nonetheless, I found the story of a man in corporate slavery, I mean work, with a functional conscience and a powerful moral compass, refreshing; I appreciated the PoV of the street-tough union organizer being humanized, as well.
It's not for everyone, but the ones it's for should know it exists.

Kind of surprising this is about Korea instead of other places I could name:
It's sort of hard to describe this. The titular "awl" is metaphorical, about punching through the "shell of cowardice" like an awl, despite fear of the repercussions, specifically about combatting unpaid labour and unfair business practices like what Soo-in endures as a Produce Department manager ordered to harass his employees into quitting, just because it's cheaper than firing them.
The prologue makes it out that Go-shin is the protagonist, since he's the one with all the law experience and gumption to stand up to shady businesspersons, but the main story focuses on Soo-in's struggle to be a good person but being stomped down at every turn. Even in military academy, he stands up and speaks out at an assembly, against the higher-ups' pressuring the cadets not to vote, and for his trouble, he gets his room trashed and written up for having trashed the room, but he just takes that as a sign that he's not cut out for the military.
Yet even after one of the officials eventually comes clean about the framing, admitting that Soo-in is a better man than he is, Soo-in still doesn't take the lesson to heart and becomes a spineless manager, taking the beating for not beating down his subordinates *enough.* They even talk of joining a union, but it becomes all talk—the union is nowhere near strong enough to have any real effect.
It's sort of difficult to follow, especially given how much adulting is involved, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone younger than at LEAST college age (despite including a lot of pre-college scenes). It definitely feels like a book written by and for legal defence workers (and no doubt there's a market for that!), something like manhwa for John Grisham or LegalEagle fans.

Кажуть, найслабші — ті, хто боїться відкрити рота, щоб себе захистити. Доволі логічна думка, чи не так? Проте навіть серед мільйонів мовчазних та заляканих людей знайдуться одиниці, які пробудять у інших жагу до спротиву, доведуть, що справедливість належить тим, хто за неї бореться.
Лі Суін — на перший погляд звичайний керуючий в продуктовому супермаркеті. Його недолюблюють підлеглі, бо вважають підлабузником та кар’єристом, а колеги-менеджери ставляться з підозрою. Та в цілому життя було стерпним, поки ситуація не повернула в неприємне русло: вище керівництво наказало Лі примусити співробітників торговельного залу звільнитись, і неважливо, наскільки брудними ті методи будуть.
І якби на місці Суіна був хтось інший, наказ було б виконано без питань та докорів сумління. Проте ще з юнацьких років в серці чоловіка живе гордість та віра в справедливість. Тож, відмовляючись виконувати наказ, чоловік отримує булінг, погрози, ігнор — повний набір “почестей” від керівництва та колег. Вступ до профспілки стає останнім шансом врятувати ситуацію.
Саме тут він і зустрічає Ґу Ґошіна, директора місцевого консультативного центру з питань трудового законодавства. Ґу — ще те шило в дупі місцевих директорів: принциповий, харизматичний, розумний, і абсолютно безстрашний. Навіть поліціянти слухаються — не від поваги, а з безвиході. Сам же Ґошін називає себе не інакше, як “найупізнаваніше місцеве лайно”.
Манхва «Шило» — гостра, правдива, місцями огидна та просякнута несправедливістю історія про те, як звичайні люди тільки-тільки стають на шлях боротьби за власні трудові права. Це складно, страшно і взагалі без гарантій на успіх, проте серця, що палають справедливістю, вже не зупинити.
Ніколи б не подумала, що історія про трудовий рух в Кореї на зламі тисячоліть зможе так мене зачепити. Але цій історії вдалося. Головні герої не просто крикливі чолов’яги, які влаштовують мітинги від нічого робити. Це складні особистості, які пройшли довгий шлях, яких намагались зламати й підкорити — та все безуспішно. З нетерпінням чекаю другий том, бо важкий шлях Лі Суіна та Ґу Ґошіна тільки починається, і дуже хочеться пройти його разом з ними.

This is a really good manhwa, with the state of labor and unions in South Korea as the main topic. Therefore, I kind of doubt it will end up being a big hit here, in a country that demonizes most efforts to unionize.
The story is not always easy to follow, and there's also quite a good amount of jargon, when it comes to labor laws, but who could have imagined a story about unions could be so fascinating in a way?
Just hoping we would have got as much background when it comes to our worker's defender, as we did with our future working class hero, currently a manager that needs to do a lot of work in getting along with his employees...

I am not usually a graphic novel reader, but the premise of The Awl intrigued me. Unfair and illegal labor practices do not sit well with the main character, so he allies himself with a union organizer and tries to effect change in the workplace. This is a bit of an over simplification, but his position as manager makes his path toward the decision and the fallout from it that much more tense to read. I was captivated and read The Awl in one sitting! I would absolutely continue the series - and I'm guessing there will be more from Gyu-seok since there was a "1" on the cover. Looking forward to 2 coming out!

An admirable comic about workers rights and labor unions. Calling it preachy would be like choosing to watch a horror movie and then complaining about the blood. Instead I'll say the art and editing are pretty weak. All the artist's effort went into the figures, which are nice enough, but the environmental art and backgrounds are often just poorly altered photos. And there are a lot of typos. That said! Power to the people, solidarity forever, thank a labor organizer today. ✌️

Learning about labor laws in other countries let’s me know how good America has it and in some ways how soft we are.
This is a very insightful series on the struggles of just getting a job in Korea. I’m not sure on the timeline of the story but I can’t imagine it’s much better now.

If you're looking for a manhwa that has nothing to do with overpowered teens or distressed villainesses, look no further: this is a bleak story about the state of labor and unions in South Korea. It's good, but it's not an easy read.

Про корейські профспілки та їх боротьбу, з елементами ідеалізованого лівацтва. Малюнок чудовий, сюжет в частині без лівацьких моментів добряче розмотує корейське життя-буття. А от лівацькі моменти скочуються у надто успішні кейси. За лівацтво мінус зірочка.

A manhwa about forming unions in Korea. It's about a grocery store chain that is trying to treat its employees so badly they quit. So they try and form a union. This thing is so dry, boring and dense though. There's also all these asides about the manager's time in the military that to me felt like a waste of time. The talks about how unions operate in Korea is so dense. It needs to be read multiple times to fully understand it unless you are an economist. Oof. I really wonder why Ablaze those this comic out of all those available to translate to English.

The Awl” is a fictional look at a union organizing effort at a grocery store in South Korea. This first book was excellent, and I’m looking forward to the release of volumes 2 and 3 in English later this year.
