Michael Tate has not had an easy life. With his father in prison, and his mother dead, Michael was sent to Woodside Children’s Home.
Now an adult, Michael wakes up from a coma in hospital suffering from amnesia and paralysis. Confused and terrified, he is charged with the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend, Becky. He also learns he attempted to end his own life.
Detective Inspector John Carver is determined that Michael is sent to prison.
With no way of defending himself, Michael is left in his hospital bed awaiting transfer to remand.
But then strange things begin to happen and his childhood comes back to haunt him.
Can Michael ever escape the past?
Will he ever discover the truth about Becky’s murder?
And why is DI Carver so eager to make him suffer?
The Abattoir of Dreams is a bitter sweet story of murder, innocence and abuse.
Mark lives in a small village in the lovely county of Cumbria, although his books are set in Oxfordshire where he was born and raised.
He's always had a keen interest in writing and after being widowed and raising his two daughters, Mark finally took the plunge and began self-publishing. Mark's writing has earned him the name #TwistedTilbury due to the dark and twisted nature of his books. He's published 12 thrillers, and his 13th novel, A Womb With A View, will be published Jan 19th 2023.
When he's not writing, Mark can be found playing guitar, reading and walking.

Prior to reading this book I had never heard of the word.
An abattoir is a slaughterhouse, or a place where animals are killed.
Now that I've read the book I can truly appreciate the gravity of the title.
This is a dark story from beginning to end, centering mostly around the abuse of children at an orphanage.
The graphic accounts of abuse and despair are so overwhelming in this book that they begin to feel gratuitous at times. The whole thing was just overkill in my opinion.
Sometimes less is more. (don't get excited boys, size still matters)
This is the ONLY book I have read in 2016 (I read a very early ARC) that not only leaped into my Top Ten Reads of 2017 Long List, but then straight into my Top Ten Reads of 2017 Short List and barrelled it's way straight into my Top Ten Reads of 2017 (final rank to be decided end of the year). That is what I call an impressive book with some serious wow factor.
Mark Tilbury is one of my favourite authors and for very good reason, this is his third novel and in my opinion it's his best work to date, if he can better this I would be super sonic excited! This book blew my socks off and fizzled nerve endings on the way, it made me laugh out loud and had me heart-broken with tears in my eyes. How can a book make you laugh that has such a dark theme? Mark Tilbury is how - he uses the most incredibly clever one-liners, sarcasm and dark humour that does nothing but enhance this book. I cannot tell you how many sentences and statements I highlighted as sheer brilliance. He is a writer who is now standing on a pillar on his own as far as writing style goes in my humble opinion.
The plot - holy cow Batman! - the plot! Nothing that I expected, and I bet nothing that you will expect either. The plot takes off very quickly and is constantly filled with turning corners, astonishing scenes and sizzling dialogue. Just when you think you get the general gist of this novel it will throw you such a huge curve ball that you are left speechless. It is a BRILLIANT plot, has everything going for it and crosses so many genres yet works so damn well.
We have crime elements, murder, child abuse, graphic scenes that sear on your brain, supernatural elements that just WORK so well, twists and turns, astonishing reveals, hugely emotional moments, characters that you will adore and want to take home, characters that you will hate so much you will consider resorting to murder yourself. What else? Oh yes - brilliant dialogue that sizzles with reality and brilliance, terrifying and exciting moments, secret business that will make you so angry and sick, unjust moments and much desired justice at the same time, in the same book. There is a dog - Oxo (I wuvs woo Oxo woofy dog) that you will want to adopt. How can you get emotional about a canine character? Mark can make it happen.
I am not going to give you more details on the brilliant characters, the actual plot or where it starts and finishes because I believe this is a book you should just buy, read and enjoy with no pre-concieved perceptions. If you read only one book from cover to cover this year, make it The Abattoir Of Dreams. I so very much want this to be a huge best-seller for Mark Tilbury, it's well worthy.
I was on a roller-coaster ride with emotions whilst reading and despite being very thick-skinned with graphic scenes and hard-to-take stuff, Mark really stretched me with this book. It hit me at heart level so hugely, totally unforgettable. It will appeal to readers of any genre and age, it's got broad audience appeal and not all books have that. Freaking exciting fiction people! Wheeeeee!
I want to write a novel of a review but you need to move on to getting this book on your to-read list and getting ready to pre-order and buy it the minute you can. Please note that this is a stand-alone novel not connected to Mark's first two books which are a series featuring the cases of a couple of awesome private detectives. If you already love Mark's books you will be very excited as I was with this one, if you didn't like his other books I challenge you to read this and form a new fresh opinion and if you have never ever read any of Mark's books - read this! Then the rest! *waves pom-poms*
Scenes of this novel will haunt me forever, characters will stay in my memory and heart always and I am so proud to announce it as my first book straight into my Top Ten Reads of 2016. Five huge stars for this astonishing book with a plot like no other, twists you won't see coming and outcomes you will be page-turning to get to. Be prepared for a laugh and a cry along the way too. Mark Tilbury - take a bow.
Be prepared to know the most amazing characters that will haunt you always...
I read this book twice (lucky me!), I was honoured to read the book as a beta reader and then read the book again purely as a reader. Many thanks to Mark for his trust he places in me.

I have had this book on my kindle since I don’t know when..... I saw this for immediate borrow on my audio library so I downloaded it.
I began to listen to it today. At each opportunity I have had my earplugs in my ears. Totally unsociable but this was so sickening and at times made my tummy feel sick that I blinked and gulped in total disgust.
Like this authors writing it just ugly disturbing yet addictive! I can’t explain it.
The topic/subject matter is disturbing to say the least but I dare you to put it down and not want to pick it up right away again.
I should have read this a long time ago, I think it just slipped down my kindle, or maybe I was just in the right mood to tackle it.
Tilbury is a new author to me and while the blurb sure grabbed my attention, I had no idea what kind of treat I was in for. For the first time I didn’t even post what genre this book fits into, it’s far to special to be slotted into place. Sometimes a book will be labeled as one thing on Goodreads but after reading it I may add in another that I think it’ll fit under, but this time? This book cannot be properly filed into one, two or even three appropriate categories. It honestly has something for everyone, there’s suspense, a bit of horror, romance, supernatural elements and enough thrills to keep your heart racing.
It opens with Michael waking up in a hospital with no memory and he only knows a few things for sure; that he is paralyzed and what he is told, and what is revealed is enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Supposedly he brutally murdered his girlfriend and then jumped off of a building, but he doesn’t even remember Becky, much less killing her. Then strange things begin to happen to him at night, is he dreaming, maybe a side effect of the pain medication he’s taking? It’s all very eerie and unsettling but beyond fascinating. I couldn’t wait to find out what had really happened and the way it was revealed to the reader and Michael was sharply clever.
The subject matter here is very dark and disturbing, it’s truly not for the faint of heart. There is abuse of every kind imaginable, it’s graphic and horrifying, but if you can stomach that, this is a must read. It evoked a wide range of emotions within me from shock, horror, sadness and tears all the way to laughter and warm moments, it was a hell of a ride. The characterization was excellent and even though I didn’t discuss all of the characters in detail, that doesn’t mean that this isn’t chock full of them, rather that I want you to discover them for yourself. The good ones will squeeze your heart and have you rooting them on, and the villains will make your skin crawl and want to vomit. (I mean that as a compliment, Tilbury has created some bad guys that may be the most despicable characters I’ve come across in years) This was a gritty and twisted read with so much heart and now if you’ll excuse me I’ll be on Amazon buying Tilbury’s other books.
I don't even know where to start with this review. It doesn't happen often that I'm lost for words but this book has made that happen.
When I started reading, I couldn't help but think how weird it all was and I was worried the book wouldn't be for me. However, I kept going. Then, at one point I set aside the supernatural/paranormal vibe (sorry Mister Tilbury) and ended up completely immersed. I'm so glad I kept going because otherwise I would have missed out on something brilliant.
This is one hard-hitting and gripping journey with and incredible plot! It has everything : crime, suspense, supernatural elements, twists and turns. Oddly enough, there's also a dash of humour and sarcasm. You'd think that shouldn't work but it does.
Michael's life in the children's home makes for some very uncomfortable reading. This is a case of child abuse at its worst and may not appeal to the faint hearted. In fact, I think if this had been a film, I might have turned it off. As it is, some scenes seem to be playing on a loop behind my eyes and it's highly disturbing.
What to say about DI John Carver? He's the worst of the worst. I can't think of a more depraved character. He made my blood boil. Be warned.
That's all I'll say. I knew very little about the book when I started reading and I think anyone who picks it up should do the same. Go with the flow, let yourself be immersed. Give it a chance. You won't regret it.
Dark and cruel but incredibly compelling. I can see this one ending up in my top 10 books of the year and it will probably haunt me for a while yet.
Wow,A Story That I Am Still Crying Over, An Emotion Filled Tale..
This book had me living through the worst of times and smiling when good events took place. What an incredible work by the author, a book you may put down for a moment, but it Never leaves you! I did not read any reviews, wanting to take in the story with nothing on my mind, and found a story that took my mind and wrapped it in fear, love, friendship, and horrors in events I would never have believed. Michael awakens in a hospital bed, not remembering anything about his life or how he came to be there. One friend visits him, along with a cruel police detective. As he hears stories, there is a strange, supernatural experience as he finds himself recovering spurts of the past and things he went through. He remembers the Boys home he was sent to after a tragic event at his home, and disgusting deeds that happened there. I don't want to give anything away, but will keep this book close to me, and highly recommend that YOU read it! Thank you Mark Tilbury for this outstanding work!!!
I am not usually stumped when it comes to reviews, and I have been sitting on this one for a few days because I just can't decide if its a one or five-star read!
To err on the side of caution I am going with the majority on this one and giving it four-stars with a disclaimer for some of the most intense trauma, violence and abuse of any novel I have ever read. Full marks for making it feel like a Stephen King read but even as I type I know anyone reading this novel will be divided by the plot and how it unfolds.
The dark, depraved world from which protagonist Michael Tate awakes is fuelled by the deepest loathing I have ever felt for a character in any read - Detective Inspector John Carver.
I am not sure why I am so divided but it relates to something between disgust and awe as the novel hurtles along at break-neck speed. The decisive factor for me lies with how I feel even a few days after finishing - if an author can make me feel so much, then job well done!
Right! Can we talk book covers first? LOVE this cover as it really depicts the story and the emotions found within the pages: dark, haunting, trapped, fear – perfect for this read! Best get on with my review!
Set in Oxford, the reader is faced with childhood trauma, fear, loss, uncertainty, mind-games, betrayal and friendship. There is so much going on and so many questions that need answering – but the author does a great job of unravelling the story and revealing the resolution without confusing the reader! YAY!
In terms of the plot, well OMFG, my curiosity was piqued from the start – and the pace was perfect for this type of story, racing when required and slowing down at the moments where I needed it to! I enjoyed how the backstory was intertwined into the main story and did not find it overly descriptive. It worked…it worked well!! The topic is not for the faint hearted and although there are uncomfortable parts, it is something that happens / has happened and all too easily brushed under the carpet. Hard-hitting, edgy and enthralling- you totally find yourself immersed in the story!
OMG there were so many interesting and captivating characters in this story. No #CharacterFillers! Each one had a specific role to play and added to the story. As usual, if I talk about them all, this will turn into a wee novella, so I will highlight the ones who really got under my skin – whether in a good way or bad!
Michael Tate is the main character and really is a survivor in all sense of the word! Determined to regain his memories, his life and the truth- he allows his mind to suspend belief and what unfolds is absolutely horrifying yet mesmerising as you just need to know more! For me, his courage, strength and integrity really shine through and I was cheering him on every step of the way! Adored him! You almost felt like you were going back in time with the characters, and I also forgot how young Michael actually was (21 yrs old) as he had a more mature head on him. Absolutely brilliant! Oh, and I have to mention Oxo – awwwww- and that is all I am saying about that! (you were right Mark, loved Oxo!)
Jimmy was another character I was completely drawn too! Never faltering in his belief that his friend was innocent, he did everything he could to help Michael – despite all the evidence saying otherwise! Everybody needs a Jimmy in their life!
Liam Truman is someone we meet along the way and my heart went out to this kid. Tough on the outside, his loyalty, friendship and desire to protect those he cared about …no matter what the cost….really pulled at my heartstrings!
John Carver …what an arse. Total old school copper in the bad sense and nasty to boot! Describing him as vile might actually be a compliment. You almost want to jump in the pages and give this guy what for! Uugghhh…I don’t even want to waste another word on him – but what a well written character!! Each character had a distinctive voice and I was pleasantly surprised, despite the storyline, how much I really loved this book!
So….the question is, would I recommend this book? Hell Bloody Yeah, I would! If you like challenging story-lines, can suspend your imagination, enjoy tension/feeling anxious waiting to see what will happen, and a cracking twist or two – then this is the book for you! When the book is available on February 28th, I will update this post to include the links! But in the meantime, why not check out what else this author has on offer – he is most definitely on my radar now! #OneToWatch #NewAuthorForMe!
This book was highly recommended by several members of my online book club so I started it without even reading the blurb (I know I'm such a rebel!). It kicks off with a killer opening chapter when we meet Michael (Mike) Tate who has woken up in a hospital bed, paralysed from the waist down and accused of murdering his girlfriend and unable to remember anything.
So far so gripping! Then we take a slightly unconventional direction from the standard crime thrillers and the book then straddles another genre which if you can suspend your belief and just go with the flow tells us the disturbing and tragic story behind Mikey.
This book covers some awful subjects including child abuse, violence, bullying, police brutality and murder but throughout the book Mark Tilbury manages to keep the reader interested and engaged with the characters without sensationalising events. It's not a particularly easy read due to the subject matter but I was gripped throughout.
I picked up this book without having read the description so had no clue what I was going into. To start with I thought it was going to be a supernatural type of story as the main character Michael, has outer body experiences by reliving memories from his past leading up to present day in hospital. I would say the first 30 or 40 percent of the story flicks like that between the hospital and Michael being taken down the tunnel to different events in his past. After that the story pretty much stays in the past which leads up to the present day.
Carver is an absolutely horrible character. Right from the start I really disliked him. The further into the story I got the dislike was swapped to loathing. The way he was treating Michael scared me never mind poor Michael. He is truly one sick and twisted individual and I kept hoping someone would walk into the hospital room and catch him in action and see what an evil person he is.
I know I mentioned that I thought that the story might be supernatural, well it isn’t. It’s a story that covers domestic abuse as well as other forms of abuse. I won’t lie, this will not be everyone’s cup of tea due to the nature of the story line as some parts are uncomfortable as well as heart breaking. Saying that though, it is an absolutely brilliant read and one I highly recommend reading.
With Michael to start with I felt pity for. I had no idea whether he was guilty or not but I knew he didn’t deserve to be treat the way that Carver was treating him. Through the tunnel he starts to learn more about himself and his past. After reading the novel I can’t help wishing he hadn’t. He has to deal with things no child should ever have to. I have to mention briefly Michael’s relationship with his childhood pet Oxo as well as Liam who he befriends in the boys home. These relationships moved me to tears and are ones that will stay with me for a long time to come.
Having read A Suitable Lie by Michael J Malone, I never thought another book would provoke such emotions within me. Well Mark Tilbury has succeeded in doing that with The Abattoir of Dreams. This is a story that will mess with your head as well as your heart. I felt like my heart had been shattered into millions of tiny pieces and I wanted so badly to be able to take away the hurt and uncertainty that Michael as well as Liam goes through.
Shocking and heartbreaking, The Abattoir of Dreams is without a doubt one of my outstanding reads so far of 2017.
Hells bells what a book! Abattoir Of Dreams by Mark Tilbury Is definitely going to be one of my top reads of 2017, it’s dark and very disturbing due to the difficult subject it covers. At times it’s pretty graphic but in the authors defence while it never felt gratuitous within the context of the story, I can see that this won’t be to everyone’s tastes. This is certainly a book that packs a punch, its gut wrenching and makes for an uncomfortable read at times but it’s also offers so much more, it’s a bitter sweet story of murder, innocence and abuse.
Michael Tate wakes from a coma in hospital with no recollection of how he came to be there, but he finds himself at the heart of a murder investigation. With no recollection of events leading up to accident, he relives his childhood memories in the most extraordinary way and my god those secrets well let’s just say they are shocking, harrowing and very, very sad and that’s all I’m going to say about this superbly plotted tale, as it’s definitely one the less you know the better the read.
Mark Tilbury has created an array of fascinating characters, my heart broke for Michael as his past is revealed, it’s brutal and heart breaking, but amid it all there’s hope, friendship and laughter. I do have to mention Detective Inspector John Carver never have I disliked a character so much, he’s the worse kind of monster and one that made my stomach churn. I always think an author is doing his job well if I have strong feelings either way about a character, and the author certainly manages to achieve this with Carver.
The Abattoir Of Dreams is darkly impressive the tension and sense of foreboding that radiated from each page made this a hard book to put down, despite how disturbing this book was I still found myself racing through it. Mark Tilbury has written a roller coaster of a thriller for sure, but this novel is also a rich and harrowing story of the psychology of evil and those who strive to stop it, this is certainly one read that will stay with you long after you’ve finished the book. Mark Tilbury is a new author (this is where I kick myself) to me but this certainly won’t be the last book I read by this author. If you enjoy a crime thriller that isn’t the norm and you don’t mind a disturbing read then this book is definitely one you don’t want to miss.
The Abattoir of Dreams, by Mark Tilbury, is a novel that I went into completely blindly. I didn’t read the synopsis, I didn’t bother checking out reviews, instead, I dove in completely in dark without any preconceived notions…and I am so glad that I chose to read this book this way.
In keeping with that theme, I will not dive into characters or much into the plot in this review because I truly would not want to ruin the experience of discovering these on your own.
The novel opens with Michael Tate in a hospital; he has no memory, he is paralyzed and is being interrogated by a police officer for murdering his girlfriend. Michael does not remember killing her, he does not remember his past and he doesn’t really understand what is going on. When strange things begin to happen and his memories begin triggering, the reader follows Michael on a journey into the past and as Michael becomes closer to discovering the truth, he realizes how much danger he is actually in.
This novel is seriously gutwrenching. The hardships, the heartache and the struggles that Michael Tate faces had me feelings all sort of feels. I was sad, I was angry. There were moments in this book that I was disgusted. There were moments where I was gasping.
The plot is multi-layered and tiptoes around so many of the features I love from many genres. This book has some dark elements, dabbles in the supernatural, contains crime elements, police procedural elements and wraps everything up in the format of a psychological thriller. This sounds like it would be trying to do too much, but Mark Tilbury does this brilliantly.
Be warned that scenes in this novel are very graphic, but even with that, I would consider this book a must-read. Fantastically written and chilling to the bone, this novel will sit with you longer after you have turned the final page.
I rated this one a 4/5 stars.
I received a digital copy of this book through the TBCFB; it was my pleasure to provide an honest review.
This book has been written with extreme care and sensitively imo, and it is the only book on the subject that I have actually been able to finish and enjoy reading. That in itself I think speaks volumes about the quality of the writing.
It focuses more on Michael's story and less on uncomfortable details that frankly I do not wish to read about. Cleverly written and a good solid read.
This was one of those rare books that I was keen to dive back into each time I came back to it. From page one, I was hypnotised and knew that I was certain of a good read – the style of writing saw to that. It was crisp, confident and easy to digest, which meant I never had to go back and re-read any passages. The subject on the other hand is shocking, hard-hitting and at times very disturbing. My emotional investment in the story of two young boys Mikey and Liam meant my heart was in my mouth at times; nevertheless I found myself rooting for them against all the odds. This book stirred up many different emotions – anger, sadness, disbelief, horror, distress, shame (for the human race) and the desire for revenge. I can honestly say I have never experienced so many emotions at once whilst reading a book. I don’t think an author could wish for a better result than to have that much of an impact on a reader. Although this is a disturbing and at times traumatic read, there is still enough of a balance between good and evil to make the story feel authentic. Carver’s character on the other hand was sometimes so brutal and extreme that I found his behaviour less convincing, but perhaps I am being naïve here. Overall, this was a great book. I could easily have read it in one go, had time allowed, and I particularly enjoyed the hallucinatory stages, with the travelling back and forward in time. I could really visualise this happening and thought it was a truly innovative approach for which Mr Tilbury deserves a round of applause. I would highly recommend this book to all but the faint hearted (and even then I say ‘go on, I dare you’). Roll on the next one Mr Tilbury! Can’t wait for more from this very talented author.
Wow, this book stirred up so emotions in me whilst reading it. Mark did a wonderful job of creating credible characters and a heartbreaking story.
I had no idea where the story would take me when it starts off with Michael waking up in a hospital bed, paralysed from the waist down and suffering from amnesia, as if that isn't enough up pops DI Carver who forces Michael to admit he killed his girlfriend, Becky.
There is a surprising supernatural element to the book which uncovers sinister dealings that take place at Woodside Children's Home.
It's up to Michael and his friend Jimmy to prove his innocence which isn't easy with the likes of Carver watching their every move.
To say more would spoil a reader's enjoyment of this wonderful book. I read it in two days, couldn't put it down.
There are many despicable villains in fiction but few can match DI Carver. To the credit of the author, I really hated this guy. Mark Tilbury has created a well-written story that wasn't always comfortable to read but gave me little choice, I had to see it through. Easy to see why he is so popular. A really good book 5 stars from me.
When Michael wakes up in hospital, he has no idea how he got there or why he is being accused of murdering his girlfriend; all he knows is that he is paralysed from the waist down and has no memory of anything at all. DI Carver takes great delight, in what can only be described as torturing Michael with probably the most unorthodox investigation techniques ever! But someone is determined to help Michael piece together his memory and he is taken on a series of ghostly “journeys” in which he is taken through his dark and horrifying past. This plot might seem a bit “out there” at first – but please stick with it, because this is an epic, dark and twisted rollercoaster ride of a read. It is fast paced filled with scenes and dialogue that will have you breaking your heart to screaming from the rooftops for justice to be done!
OK, granted the main theme of this book – abuse – in particular abuse of children is not candy floss reading – it’s hard-hitting and emotional – it punches you right in the guts and leaves you winded – and so it should – this abuse was and is real for so many and it is right that reading a book like this leaves you both distraught and angry!
The characters in the book grabbed my heart – I truly lived their lives with them reading through. DI Carver – the torturous death I pictured for him is not for publication! Ohhhh Michael – seriously my heart was torn out reading his journeys – the wasted opportunities for him to be saved; the adults who let him down and horrors he faced, I wanted to reach into the pages and rescue him! Liam – I loved – he was not willing to stand back and let the bad guys win and I cheered for him throughout, what a strong and determined character! Oxo – although I’m a dog lover – I don’t usually mention animals in my reviews – but seriously – Oxo the dog – the scenes with him and Michael melted my heart – I was literally mush reading them!
OK, I’m not going to lie, when I first started reading the book, I wondered what I’d let myself in for – it seemed pretty “out there” what with the sadistic DI and the “ghostly pusher” hmm, I thought after Michael’s first “journey” – is this going to be my cup of tea – is it just a bit too much suspension of belief for me? Well let me tell you right now – get yourself on that “journey” because each one draws you in further to the living hell that was Michael Tate’s past and each one just wraps the story up tighter and tighter. But be warned – this is not a book for the faint-hearted. I was #FreakedOut #Terrified #Weeping but completely gripped at the same time! #AbattoirOfDreams will drag you in, chew you up and spit you out the other end an emotional wreck!
I'm not usually at a loss for words when it comes to reviews but this book has left me speechless. . . in a good way!
Being a book blogger means that you find out about lots of books before they're published and some books create a real buzz in our community and The Abattoir of Dreams was one of them. Several bloggers that I know and trust were screaming from the rooftops about it so I bought my copy with the plan that I'd sneak it into my schedule at some point, but then I lost my reading mojo. That's when I decided to give this book a go and I certainly got my mojo back!!
We first meet Michael Tate when he wakes up in hospital with no recollection of how he got there. He then finds out that he's been in a coma and that he's paralysed from the waist down, surely things can't get any worse for him. . . . . enter Detective Carver to accuse him of murder!
Michael has amnesia so he has no idea if Carver is telling the truth or not but his constant replies of "I can't remember" only seem to be provoking the detective who clearly just wants him to admit that he murdered his girlfriend Becky and he has some very unconventional and probably illegal ways of trying to get Michael to confess.
Then Michael starts to have dreams that take him back to his childhood which is a very dark place that's full of experiences no child should have to go through. But are these dreams real? Is his memory returning or is it the effects of the drugs he's taking?
I wasn't prepared for the extreme roller coaster of emotions that I was taken on while reading this. One minute my heart was bleeding for Michael and the next minute I was filled with horror at the level of abuse that some of the characters were subjected to. Every single character will evoke an emotion for one reason or another and that includes Oxo, Michael's dog. As much as I loved Michael and was willing his life to turn around, at the other end of the spectrum I was filled with a disturbingly vicious hatred for Detective Carver. I've met some truly despicable characters in books before but never in my life have I encountered one as truly repugnant as this one! He made my skin crawl and even thinking about him now while writing this turns my stomach.
The Abattoir of Dreams is a book that won't sit comfortably with some readers due to the subject matter but if you can get past that it's one that will leave you gasping for breath. Mark Tilbury has taken on a very dark and almost taboo subject and deftly created a story that deals with these issues sensitively and with compassion and the end result is a book that I honestly can't recommend highly enough.
Mr Tilbury, welcome to my top ten list of books of 2017!
Excuse my language but this book grabs you by the balls from page one and doesn't let go! I don't think that I've ever felt as much rage when reading a book or for so many different reasons throughout a whole book.
The main character is Michael who we follow on a journey of discovery after her wakes up from a coma due to an attempted suicide. He is trying to regain his memory while recovering from his injuries as well as dealing with trying to figure out if he did murder his girlfriend and what on earth is going on with the visions he is having. With the visions Michael has and the way they come about, I thought that The Abattoir Of Dreams was going to be more horror than crime, but it is not that at all, Mark Tilbury is just an amazing author who is able to write about real life horror in a extremely clever way.
Right from page 1 we meet D.I. John Carver who I think has officially won my title of most vile, despicable, criminal characters that I have ever come across. I hated him right from the get go and the hate turned into loathing and revulsion in a pretty quick time. Every time he was around, my heart quickened and I became extremely stressed wondering what he would do next. His character is written so perfectly I had a physical reaction to his presence!
The story covers a lot of extremely disturbing and violent topics, but definitely ones that are important to talk about. It does make you feel uncomfortable at times and it will be too much for some, but Mark has dealt with the topics well.
Without giving away too much, I think my two favourite characters are Jimmy and Oxo (Oxo is a dog, they're always going to be great).
Once I started reading I could not put this book down. Even through all the rage and through all the difficult to read scenes (have you ever tried to read a book without looking, like you would at a scary or intense part of a movie, it makes life very difficult!) I wanted to know what really happened and what would come from finding out the truth.
This is my first book by Mark Tilbury but I am officially hooked!
I am very curious about what, exactly, the cover of this book will entail, but alas, The Abattoir of Dreams won't be published until March, 2017. I have a feeling that it be AWESOME and EPIC and well...incomprehensible.
The lovely Maxine has written a review which pulsates with passion and an almost palpable love and respect for the written word. You can read it here:
Wooow this was intense and dark and emotional!I read these author's other two books and i think this is his best so far.A little masterpiece which is mainly thriller but it borrows elements from supernatural and paranormal .Some scenes were a little too graphic and detailed for my taste but the plot, rich characterization and depth of this book are that superb that it didn't spoil the experience. This author is skilled, he knows how to write and one of the few that constantly maintains quality and comes up with original stories. His strength is also reflected in his antagonist, villain so evil and depraved that whenever he popped in this novel my heart started beating faster. And I thought that one in Revelation room was awful.Characters on the good side were also great(Michael, Liam) .This book has depth that lacks in many thrillers( religious and moral questions) which is always a plus for me.All in all everyone should read this novel because it cannot be put under one category and sometimes it seems so real that you forget that you read fiction.five easy stars form me .:)
This was a dark, disturbing and deeply discomforting read, one that unfailingly hooked me from the very start.
Alone in a hospital ward,Michael wakes to hear that he has committed a heinous crime and despite his own efforts, has lived to tell the tale. But,he can't,as amnesia has corralled his thoughts, leaving him powerless to remember the events of that fateful day.
But all is definitely not as it seems and strange forces at play make us privy to a tale more horrendous that one initially expected when picking up this book.
Can the perpetrators of these crimes be brought to justice? Can the ghosts of innocent victims at last be laid to rest?
This was a fantastic, intense and deeply gratifying read that ran the full gamut of emotions.
Please note that due to the detailed approach to the disturbing and deprived subject matter this should not be read by those of a sensitive nature.
The Abattoir of Dreams is a very dark, disturbing read. It's a shockingly powerful work of fiction.
Oxford, 1976. Michael Tate wakes up in hospital from a coma. He's paralysed from the waist down and suffering from amnesia. He doesn't know who he is or what happened to him. A rather loathsome cop, Detective Inspector Carver comes to visit him and accuses him of brutally murdering his girlfriend Becky. Michael is informed that after the murder he attempted suicide. Michael is stunned. He doesn't remember a thing!
Then bizarre things start to happen. In a number of scenes that reminded me of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, Michael is taken from his hospital bed, back in time, vividly reliving his miserable childhood and teenage years. Michael is terrified and confused by these episodes. What's happening to him? Is he just imagining everything? Is this the result of his fall from the tower block? A side effect of his medication? Or is his memory trying to come back? Will Michael find the truth of what really happened? Did he really kill his girlfriend in a frenzied attack? Or is someone trying to set him up?
Having a supernatural element and abuse as its main theme (two things I try to avoid in books) I was a bit concerned that I would not enjoy this book, but I took the plunge and read it. This book is somewhat different to what I would normally read but it's very well written with a well thought out, heart-wrenching plot at its heart. Now that I've finished it, to say I 'enjoyed' it wouldn't exactly be the right phrase to use, due to the book's theme - abuse - but I am just so glad I've read it. I feel I've gone on a journey alongside Michael. I've suffered with him through his ordeal and felt his pain.
Now, I like my stories to be as realistic as possible, so I would have preferred that this book did not include any supernatural happenings. I tried not to focus much on that aspect and instead concentrated on Michael's story. I wanted to know how Michael ended up accused of murder, what horrors has he gone through and what will happen to him.
Have you ever read a book and hated the villain so much you wished you could somehow get inside the story and kill him with your own bare hands? Well this is one such book. I have never hated a character as much as I've hated Detective Inspector Carver! He must be the most horrible, despicable and hateful villain I've ever encountered in all the books I've read. And he wasn't the only disgusting pervert in this book.
Brilliantly written, this book made me feel all sorts of emotions. I was angry, sad, tearful, on edge, frustrated and disgusted, but also hopeful. My heart went out to Michael. I was gutted for what he went through and I wished I could help him in some way. And though there were some scenes I found a bit difficult to read, that made me wince and bite my knuckles, the author did an incredible job in tackling the subject of abuse as sensitively as possible, using the right words to soften the horror.
I feel that this book has had some kind of effect on me, not sure how to explain it, but I know that Michael will remain with me for a very long time.
This was my first book by Mark Tilbury, but it certainly won't be my last. With thanks to the author for an ARC of this book which I voluntarily accepted to read and review.
Oh My God!! This is the first book by Mark Tilbury that I've read, and it has left me stunned! Michael Tate wakes from a coma in hospital with no recollection of how he came to be there. All he knows is that he is at the heart of a murder investigation, and the police officer investigating him seems terrifyingly familiar. Michael relives his childhood through his dreams and the secrets hidden there are as shocking and as harrowing as they can be. This has to be one of the best books I've ever read, and I have already shortlisted it in my 2017 top 10. Wow. Just Wow!!
Mark Tilbury just gets better and better. This story has so many turns you just hate putting it down. There are some scenes that some readers won't like. But in my opinion for the story to grab you they were needed to pull it together. His other books are good but...this is by far his best to date
Michael Tate wakes up in hospital paralysed from the waist down and memory loss. DI Carver tells him he has murdered his girlfriend, Becky. Michael is very much on his own and scared. Strange things start to happen and Michael finds himself being taken on journeys back to his childhood and various points in his life. This story took me on an emotional ride, one minute I would be so angry and the next I would be in tears. The book is a well written supernatural thriller that had me on the edge of my seat many times. I would highly recommend this book.
Most of you that follow my blog know that I am a sucker for a psychological thriller and what can say, Mark Tilbury certainly doesn't disappoint with this shocking story. From the moment I started this, having read only a couple of pages I knew that it was going to be good. But the plot thickened and it just got better, so much better that I couldn't put it down….keeping me up until the early hours of the morning.
Seriously you guys are in for one hell of a treat with this story. It is nothing like any other Psychological thriller I have read before….. it's absolutely fanflippintasic.
The story starts off with one hell of a gripping and intriguing start….. So imagine waking up from a coma in hospital to find out that you are paralyzed?! Well this is what happens to Michael Tate. Also suffering from amnesia he is charged with the stabbing of his girlfriend. Detective inspector John Carver is determined that Michael is sent to prison for it. But all Michael can do is wait for a transfer to remand. With a childhood he would rather leave in the past, strange things start to happen and his childhood starts to haunt him. The question is will he ever discover the truth and Becky's murder.
Holy freaking hell what an impressive and clever story. With the author building the story up layer by layer making me wanting to know more every single page I turned. Gripping is an understatement.
And the fact that I had more than one OMG moment speaks volumes. Reading it with my hand over my mouth with the shocking a twisted descriptions. Yes this book is also dark and twisted and it ticked all the boxes for me.Mark Tilbury is definitely going places that's for sure. One moment I am feeling sorry for Michael then I am saying oh my god. This story definitely got inside with my head.
If you're looking for a page turner this is the book for you I cannot recommend it enough giving it 5 massive well deserved stars.
Thank you to the author for a copy in exchange for a honest review.
The Abattoir of Dreams is thriller writer Mark Tilbury’s third novel, and as I’m a fan of the first two, reading this one was a must! Unlike Mark’s other books, The Revelation Room and The Eyes of the Accused, it's a standalone offering and not part of the Ben Whittle investigation series. Instead, in The Abattoir of Dreams he takes his writing down a supernatural route, blending a paranormal theme with thriller material, a dash of time travel and dollops of humour. A unique and intriguing concept!
Much of the action takes place in the 1970s, at a government-run children’s home. In recent years we’ve seen the unearthing of many terrible abuse cases that happened at such places, and this theme is examined in depth in The Abattoir of Dreams. The plot delves into many dark concepts, such as cruelty to children, corruption and murder and yet Mark throws in splashes of humour along the way. This is what has struck me before with his writing, and what makes him stand out – I read his books and think, ‘how the hell does he do that?’ You wouldn’t think horror and humour make good bedfellows, yet they do in Mark’s capable hands. He manages it with a succession of witty asides, sarcastic comments and other gems, often in the head of Michael Tate, the protagonist.
Talking of characters, what a fine cast we have! There are many dark souls in this book: Michael’s father, Kraft and Malloy at Woodside, and none more dogged in his pursuit of Michael than D I John Carver, the police officer determined to bring Michael to justice. Alongside them are many sympathetic characters, though: Michael’s mother, her friend Rachel and the kindly vicar, Paul Brady. The friendship between the younger Michael and damaged fellow Woodside resident Liam is both tender and touching, and lightens the part of the story that deals with terrible things.
And then there’s Michael himself. Paralysed, his memory faulty, he’s vulnerable to the machinations of D I Carver, and the reader feels for his plight, especially once his tragic story begins to be revealed. He needs to confront his past, but how can he when he doesn’t remember it? Michael has friends, however, and not all of them belong to this world. As a ghostly presence transports him back in time, the truth is gradually revealed, and Michael learns what really happened to Becky.
The Abattoir of Dreams is a great read, and I highly recommend it.
Mark Tilbury is a new author to me so I had no idea what to expect when I started reading The Abattoir of Dreams. I’m always apprehensive when I read a new author as I never know if I’ll get along with the author’s style, but I needn’t have worried. Mark Tilbury has written a very interesting thriller.
We meet Michael Tate, in hospital after waking from a coma, and he is the prime suspect in the murder of his girlfriend. Becky was found stabbed to death in their flat, and Michael is paralysed and suffering from amnesia after attempting suicide. When he is visited by Detective Inspector John Carver, he is informed that he is charged with her murder.
Michael has had a traumatic childhood. His father murdered his mother and is in prison. The reader also learns that Michael was a resident at Woodside Children’s Home, and it was far from a happy place to be. I found the chapters dealing with Michael’s past to be the most harrowing and emotive in the book. These chapters will send the reader on a journey and you will be put through the emotional ringer.
The Abattoir of Dreams deals with a few themes, the most prevalent being murder and abuse. I found that although it was tough and uncomfortable to read about, the author has done a good job of dealing with it honestly and sensitively.
The author has shown just how horrific and depraved some people can be, and the lengths to which they will go to get what they want. The Abattoir of Dreams is a gripping thriller, and I will definitely look out for more books from this author.
