This novel concludes an epic series of love, loss and redemption as the US Army 3rd Division fights battles at Vosges Mountains and the Colmar pocket. With the Allies' victory in Rome, Tessa and Anthony marry in the Eternal City. However, their happiness is shattered when Tessa is unexpectedly transferred to Normandy. Now, Anthony must continue on with his troops to Southern France for Operation Dragoon. In the pursuit of the cunning Wehrmacht commander standing in the Allies' way of victory, he is caught in a deadly game of chase. How many men will he sacrifice in order to win? Hopelessly in love with Tessa,Jesse Garland must decide whether to act on his feelings or to lose all possible chances with the only woman he's ever wanted. His unrequited love and his decision will alter their lives forever. During the Second World War, in autumn 1944, the Vosges Mountains was a site of brief but sharp fighting between Franco-American and German forces. The Colmar Pocket was the area held in central Alsace, France by the German Army from late November 1944 to early February 1945, against the US 6th Army Group. It was formed when the 6th AG liberated southern and northern Alsace and adjacent east Lorraine, but couldn't clear central Alsace. The French First Army reinforced by the US XXI Corps, cleared the Pocket of Germans in early 1945. Operation Dragoon, initially Anvil, was the code name for the landing operation of the Allied invasion of Southern France on 15th August 1944. Due to lack of available resources and supplies, the operation couldn't be held directly after Overlord, so it was approved for August. The goal of the invasion was to secure the vital ports of the French Mediterranean coast and increase pressure on German forces by opening another front. Hindered by Allied air supremacy and a large scale uprising by the French Resistance, the weak German forces were swiftly defeated. The University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory made ground breaking contributions to the Manhattan Project. The university isolated plutonium and Enrico Fermi created the first artificial, self sustained nuclear reaction in 1942.
At first I thought this book was going to be anti-climatic. Not so. After the US Army third division drives back the Germans from Anzio, they enter Rome to a triumphant welcome. There, Tessa and Anthony, two lovers of a love triangle present in books 2 and three, meet and celebrate a very important personal occasion . However, the war soon claims their attention and they each move on to their tasks. Thanks to a meddlesome head nurse, Tessa is further separated from Anthony.
I enjoyed how the author added tension to the book, not only in describing the battle scenes, the interaction between the main characters and the enemy, but the doubts that crept into the personal relationships. She did a wonderful job of developing the personalities of all the characters. The plot kept me engaged until the end, even though there were times I wanted to knock Anthony on the head and tell him to have more faith in himself as he develops his doubts when he becomes aware of the third person in a love triangle. There were secondary romances that were resolved beautifully.
This is a story not just of romance, but of war. I enjoyed how the author used fiction to acquaint me with battles I knew nothing about prior to reading this book. I definitely recommend this entire series to anyone who enjoys World War II fiction, especially if they enjoy romance mixed in.
This WWII series is exceptional in that not only are the main characters followed but the many secondary characters are as well.
I gotta say here I fell in love with Jesse. His thoughts, feelings, actions and backstory made this series a hit! The fact that these young lives are so dynamically changed due to the war is astonishing, yet the author does an amazing job in telling their stories.
The portrayal of work in field hospitals and battles including times in-between is very well described in detail. It's good, solid writing and well worth the read for historical fiction and romance readers. Definite thumbs up!!
Great ending for a wonderful series. I loved it. It kept me on the edge of my seat, especially right at the end. This series had some great characters and some vivid scenes. I had to read the whole series one after another until it was finished. I loved the Character Jessie. Would recommend this to anyone that enjoys historical fiction, especially world war II fiction or anyone that love a great romance. It fits both to the T and has some suspense and adventure in there as well.
In this conclusion to The Rose of Anzio series, Tessa and Anthony are still in Europe in the final stages of the war. Anthony is charged with finding Klaus at great loss and Tessa finds herself in danger when she is transferred to another hospital. As in the previous three books, the writing is excellent and descriptive and the relationships are intricate and interesting. I really enjoyed this whole series.
An absolutely great series of which Remembrance is the crown jewel. The research into the battle scenes is thorough and the excellent writing carries the reader right there on the sidelines, watching. The characters are developed in depth, with all their joys and sorrows, so much so that the reader cannot forget them. Another masterpiece by Alexa Kang!
Book 4 in this series finds our protagonists separates yet again by the war - Tessa is in Normandy and headed towards Belgium at the end of 1944 while Anthony heads from Marseille up to the Vosges and into Germany itself. As the war grinds to an end, their love story continues. Really enjoyed this series
This is the fourth and final book in this series. You will meet so many different characters you grow to admire and you find how different situations in life can pull you this way; No that way.
I enjoyed reading this book, following the main characters and how they handled the various problems they encountered. I read all the books in the series and would recommend them to anyone who likes reading about WWII. Colorado Jim’s wife, Glenna.
This is one those intense, fast-paced, hard to put down stories! A story of love, loss, war, and triumph over war. I thank Ms.Kang for an amazing series! I highly recommend this series!
I have read all four books. I enjoyed the story line, but I found your research on the battles very interesting. My father fought in Anzio and he never spoke about the war or what happened. After all these years I finally learned what he had to endure.
I enjoyed the whole series. It helped us to remember how our soldiers sacrificed and died for our country. The battle at Anzio was a very important part in this book.
I am not exactly disappointed, but this wasn't a worthy conclusion to an epic love story that spans several years and the whole second world war. Before I write about this book specifically, I have to say that I was bored with Anthony from the beginning and never warmed to him. This book hasn't changed my mind. He is neither an interesting narrator nor a thrilling personality. After slogging through four books of his droning stream of consciousness, which made even dramatic rescue missions seem bland and dull, I felt that enough really is enough.
Again, a lot of side characters were sacrificed to keep the darlings Tessa and Anthony not only alive but unscratched. The way they waltzed through battlefields and bombings had to result at least in a number of flesh wounds but no. Instead, legions of side characters I largely preferred to the lackluster main couple were murdered for the necessary drama. Because the love story itself is far from dramatic, or even interesting (seeing how Anthony is incredibly boring and Tessa's dialogues with him are always a waste of time), the author had to do something to keep readers invested, I suppose.
Personally, I always preferred Jesse over all the other characters and I never understood his controved and unbelievable feelings for Tessa. How can he be so sure he loves her if he doesn't even know her? Anyway, the way he was treated in this final installment was as abominable as it was predictable. Still, his arc actually moved me and kept me reading through this rainbow slog.
Was it a good conclusion to the series? Personally, I think the series dragged for too long. 2 or 3 books would have been plenty, while the filler spread out over 4 books was way too much.
I was very disappointed that I never got invested in Tessa and Anthony, and that the Ellie-Aaron arc was dragged out so long.
All in all, I would recommend this series for fans of Candy Candy. However, there is much less drama for the main couple because they are protected by a Deus Ex Machina or disposable side characters.
The twists were too many and too twisted for me. Several twists did not seem realistic, and they were not enjoyable to me. Perhaps the ending was "better" due to the lows which accompanied the darker twists. I did not find that to be the case, and did not find it intellectually honest - and I do appreciate that looking for reality and honesty in a historical fiction romance does not in itself make a great deal of sense if I'm looking for a degree of believably.
