Di Stéfano

Pele, Best, and Maradona everyone has heard of, but to the true soccer fans Alfredo Di Stefano, the magician behind Real Madrid’s five European Cups in a row, is the greatest. For 20 years, Di Stéfano was the guiding force behind three teams in three at River Plate in his native Argentina; at Millonarios of Bogotá in Colombia; and then in 1953, Real Madrid. There he became soccer’s first global icon, nicknamed the striking "Blond Arrow" for his powerful stamina, tactical versatility, and precision goal scoring. He led Madrid as a team whose playing style others learned from, whose stylishness was envied, and whose widespread appreciation elsewhere help portray Franco’s isolated and right-wing Spain in a more flattering light. When he retired, Di Stefano had changed Spain as a nation, culturally and politically. This is his story, including candid and exclusive interviews highlighting his journey from humble beginnings to emerging as one of the first global sport superstars.

A fantastic read. Very informative biography about Di Stefano's life, fears, dreams, achievements. Very well written and the Blonde Arrow's story was perfectly told. A must read for football fans to get an idea on what football used to be.

Before I read this book all I knew was Di Stefano played for Spain and scored lots of goals especially in European cups. What I didn't know was just how long he played in South America especially Colombia which ran a break away league.
The book is full of political intrigue and even a kidnapping and Hawkey shows the pull for Argentinian towards Spain.
Well researched, this isn't just a book full of how well a player has done in his career or a list of his achievements.
Spanning in the main 1940s through to the 1960s, Hawkey shows football hasn't really changed much except the superstars today are exposed more on TV and the game has got quicker.
Despite this, it's evident from Di Stefano's character he would have thrived in the modern era.
