Michael Weekly’s sharp and crisp imagination and writing style shines through in his latest fantasy adventure, Evergreen. Young Calvin and his mother have lived like gypsies, never staying in one place for long, but his world is about to become the very thing of fantasies when they move to Evergreen in Colorado, a smalltown his mother once lived in. What is so special about Evergreen? Could it be the ocean that laps at its shores? Prepare yourself to fall into a tale of magic, coming of age and the value of friends and allies.

For generations the honor of being an Ever Guard has been passed down from parent to child, but this time young Calvin is thrust into his position without the benefit of parental guidance when his mother goes missing. Desperately trying to understand and believe in his position, Calvin learns of a world of magic, mystical creatures, joy and danger beyond the gate he is sworn to guard in order to keep reality “real” and not allow magic to creep into the human world. Has he failed in his duty? Calvin can see these creatures all round him, but why can’t the rest of the world?

So begins Calvin’s journey to fulfill his destiny along with his friends and allies, each with their own special talents. Still, where has Calvin’s mother gone? As they say, the plot thickens and a dark mystery engulfs him as he finds the Ever Guards have been trapped in another world where an evil queen has vile plans of her own. Only one can stop her, but how?

The magic of a great fantasy, the value of great friends and allies and the difficulties of making your way in a world where it is hard to tell friend from foe. Sit back, believe and you will be there as great dialogue feels natural, characters come to life and the atmosphere is filled with adventure and tension. Michael Weekly knows how to make his tales magnetic and fun with his gift for writing!

I received an ARC edition from Michael Weekly in exchange for my honest review.

5 Star Review. Wish it went higher because this was great! Gosh, I don't know where to start. There was so much meat to this book. Mr. Weekly's writing always messes with my mind. It's almost like a parable and has hidden meaning throughout all his works. He builds complex worlds, and this book certainly follows suit in that regard. I like to think of his books as a nice big plate of crab legs with a side of melted butter for dipping. Do you like crab legs? I love them. They are so meaty and juicy but you have to crack them just right and peel the meat out. It's quite messy but worth all the work. In other words, you have to work for your food. Lol. Michael's books are like that. I mean this in a wonderful way. His world makes you really think and pay attention. I get so caught up in it. It seems so real and like I'm studying a whole world of creatures and learning all about them and what makes them tick. There's always a surprise around the corner. And at the end, I'm always so shocked and amazed. Never expecting it. And what is revealed in those final passages, makes me see all the characters and story in a whole new light. It really makes me want to go back and read it again because after finding answers to all the mysteries and having my eyes opened, reading it again would make it all that more rich. I'm so bad to cheat though because I can't stand the suspense. I would think to myself that I'm just gonna read one more chapter then go to bed. But by the end of a chapter, Michael would reveal something else and it would be like the ending of a really good episode of your favorite show so I would have to read another chapter to find out what happens. A few chapters quickly turn into a whole book. Needless to say, there were times when I only got two hours sleep and had to work 12 hours the next day. It was all worth it.

Calvin has had a rough life in different schools. His mom has moved them around repeatedly. He is different from other kids because he is colorful. This is not excepted very well. Therefore, he is mistreated and bullied. This is not the main focus of the story. Just a part of who he is and how he feels. He doesn't know it yet, but he is an Ever Guard. His life is about to change when his mother moves them to a little community she used to live in called Evergreen in Silverton, Colorado. Where there is also an ocean. This is just one mystery for Calvin to solve, and is the least of his worries. In his new town he finely makes some friends that except him for who he is. Each one is an Ever Guard. I normally don't read YA but I never felt like I was reading something for young people. The story never once makes you think of the age of the characters. This can be read and is appropriate for any age. The characters are so very well developed. My favorite scene is where they all go skiing and a bad snow storm hits trapping Calvin. He is rescued by a mysterious guy who just happens to be a dragon. But is this guy someone who can be trusted? I don't want to give too much away about the book. Come along for the ride as you follow the adventures of this group of Ever Guards. From the scary scene in a library where Calvin hears a strange voice to the glittery goo that seems alive around his house. Oh, and watch out for the evil pixies with sharp teeth! Calvin soon learns that he will have to work hard and learn fast if he is to defeat the evil queen who is behind a lot of bad happenings and an evil plot. Not to mention that the Ever Guards' parents go missing.

Evergreen - Michael Weekly

### 5 Magical Hashtags ###

Wow, what a totally amazing book ! Can I give this one more stars ? I was completely drawn into Calvin's world and what a magical adventurous place it is. What seems like our normal world is twisted with hidden fairies, elves, dragons, mermaids and lots of magic, fairy dust oh and the glittery goo!

I'm not going to re-cap on the story, I'll just say this is a definite must read for all YA paranormal/fantasy lovers - this is one of those books that you never ever want to end and rarely do I think this... but this one really should be a film.

This has to be Michael's best book so far - what an incredible imagination, I was blown away by the descriptive storyline and was kept captivated all the way through to the very end - I really need more now !
