Across Whitworth's 125-year history, a host of torchbearers have dedicated themselves to living out and sustaining Whitworth's mission to equip graduates to "honor God, follow Christ, and serve humanity." Current students and alumni, transformed by Whitworth, go on to transform the people they meet and places they live. Faculty, staff, trustees and friends, through faith, commitment, leadership and vision, established Whitworth's foundation in 1890, developed the school into a thriving college, guided the institution through eras of challenge and change, and now shepherd Whitworth into a promising future. From the foreword.
This large coffee table book about the history of Whitworth College/University lists 125 people and 125 things that have shaped Whitworth. The stories range from cut and dried mentions of people with money who made major building contributions (dull) to those who fought racism or poverty or made major contributions to science or art or just attended in spite of a disability or without being able to return to their war-torn country (not dull). It lists iconic things most living alums will remember (virgin pinecone, Traditiation, Community Building Day, saga trays) to particular icons of an era (Rob Clancy's car, Eric's Fruit Stand, Forrest's CareBear toga, Stan's Coffee, Save Our Urinals, and particular dorm pranks). A fun nostalgic read.
