The Mayor smiles, a glint of sharp edges in his eyes. “I wouldn’t presume to talk shop while you’re busy saving my life.”

Cadence Hart has survived an attempt on her life, and she’s dealing with it just fine, thank you very much. She doesn’t need to be treated like she’s made of glass, and she definitely doesn’t need to be sent to see a counsellor, no matter what her boss might think is for the best.

What Cadence really needs is to be working - patrolling the streets, chasing down Shades and sending Souls back to the Hell they escaped from. But a routine patrol at a political rally ends violently when Mayor Harvey Curwood is shot, and when it becomes clear that a Soul pulled the trigger, Cadence is tasked with solving his attempted murder.

It should be a simple job of finding the Soul and Deporting them. But Cadence knows better than anyone - even in a world where a flaming sword can distinguish between the innocent and the guilty, morality is never as simple as ‘right’ and ‘wrong’.

I'm loving this series. In this one, Cadence investigates the attempted assassination of a corrupt mayor. The mystery surrounding this didn't keep me guessing like the mysteries have done in past books; rather, the driving force of Good Deeds is Cadence's personal relationships--with Matthew, her partner who is also a Sin (a certain kind of soul escaped from Hell), with a new love interest, and with the new guy at the precinct who will replace her as a Deportations officer once her 5-year stint is up (four months left! What will she DO?!).

I wouldn't mind seeing a little more in the way of female friendships and characters, so I'm hoping we see more of Cadence's friend Jerusalem in the next book, or perhaps a new female character. Also, I felt the ending was rather abrupt, but this IS a series and there will be threads that aren't wrapped up neatly.

The pacing is still quick and the tension high, and I found myself smiling like an idiot during some of the flirty parts. Overall, this is another fine installment in the series!

(Note: I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review.)
