Blake Karrington is more than an author. He’s a storyteller who places his readers in action-filled moments. It’s in these creative spaces that readers are allowed to get to know his complex characters as if they’re really alive.
Most of Blake’s titles are in the South in urban settings that are often overlooked by the mainstream. But through Blake’s eyes, readers quickly learn that places like Charlotte, NC can be as gritty as they come. It’s in these streets of this oft overlooked world where Blake portrays murderers and thieves alike as believable characters. Without judgement, he weaves humanizing backstories that serve up compelling reasons for why a drug dealer might choose a life of crime.
Readers of speak of the roller coaster ride of emotions that ensues from feeling anger at empathetic characters who always seem to do the wrong thing at the right to keep the story moving forward.
In terms of setting,Blake’s stories introduce his readers to spaces they may or may not be used to - streetscapes with unkept, cracked sidewalks where poverty prevails, times are depressed and people are broke and desperate. In Blake storytelling space, morality is so curved that rooting for bad guys to get away with murder can sometimes seem like the right thing for the reader to do - even when it’s not.
Readers who connect with Blake find him to be relatable. Likening him to a bad-boy gone good, they see a storyteller who writes as if he’s lived in world’s he generously shares, readily conveying his message that humanity is everywhere, especially in the unlikely, mean streets of cities like Charlotte.
I enjoyed this read but it was a fast progression. The characters weren't developed. We can assume the kind of business that King is in but it never really says. Same as his step dad-who is he really? What's the story on Imani & Carlton? Who's the mystery bedroom man? I was disappointed to learn there isn't part 2 considering this book is over 7 months out. I would give this read 3 1/2 stars but since I can't I'll just round it to 4.
I enjoyed reading this book. I like King, he is no nonsense and I loved To go even more. Carlton married his best friend's wife after the friend dies. However, He is definitely a no good player as he is messing with his daughter's best friend. DeShawn, the detective doesn't knows how to say goodbye. He is married but is fixated on Sloan. He just won't let go. He is a stalker and has moved to killing and framing King. Is Sloan really that naive or is it sometime her background. She did pull a gun on Yogi! I liked how King treated his mother, sister and daughter. Can't wait for the next book because Carlton will have to deal with Imani pregnancy and DeShawn will be dealt with. Enjoyable read.
I loved this story. It was believable and I finished it in a few hours because it literally kept me drawn in. I didn’t like the ending. It felt rushed and incomplete. There is no mention of another part, but it’s like there almost HAS to be a sequel coming. Some of the characters seem rushed and underdeveloped too. I give it 4 stars because I’m certain this isn’t the end of this story. I wait with anticipation for the next part to drop.
I guess it is true a woman is a men down fall I hope King get out of this. King should have listened to his mom and only someone green would thrown a gun in the dumpster she should have hit Lake Michigan dummy
This book was exciting and made me want ti continue to read till the end. If you like a great story like and constant excitement I recommend this book!
My Rating: 5 Stars Blake Karrington has definitely showed up and showed out with this one! Here he introduces us to the handsome, charming and smart, King. King is all about his family and his business. He of course dabbles in the street business that he grew up in, with his father being the King before he died. But King has his irons in the fire as he builds a legal empire in music promotions. King is thinking of leaving his street dealing to go legit when an enemy strikes close to home, for seemingly no reason. With his best friend out of prison, he bides his time and seeks revenge with Kareem's help. He lays low and plots carefully to bring justice for some of his fallen soldiers. Kareem, having just been released feels he owes it to King and their soldiers to get revenge. Kareem's wife is adamant about him not going back to the streets and gives him an ultimatum to leave the streets, or she will leave him. Kareem wants to be legit as well, but he sees how very hard it is out there when trying to put food on his family's table. His wife only complicates things further by quitting her job and creating more financial strain, He also realizes how hard it is to keep being faithful with so many options out there. King wishes that Kareem treated her better and understands her frustration, but he also notices little changes in her as well. Something isn't quite right and King sees this, especially when she takes an out of town trip without Kareem or their children. King says something but since Kareem is bent on doing his things so since he is not concerned neither is King. King doesn't need any extra complications in his life. He already has a lazy baby mother who is greedy and doesn't want to do a thing with her life. He is single by choice but soon becomes enamored but a beautiful songstress, Sloan. Sloan is beautiful, educated, talented and hard working. She is not currently looking to date but when King enters the jewelry store when she works and custom orders something, she can't help but be smitten by him. She was fresh off a break up from her married ex boyfriend and needed something refreshing and real in her life. It couldn't get any realer than King. But when you are in the position of a King, everybody wants to take your throne. Sloan's ex has a common enemy with. He is obsessed with Sloan and doesn't know how to let go, despite the fact that he hid is marriage from her, he feels Sloan should forgive him and take him back. So he plots to get her back by any means necessary. Even if it means destroying King. Who is the common enemy? What does Sloan's ex have to planned for King? What will happen with Kareem? Will King get the revenge he seeks? Will King remain on his throne? Make sure you get your copy to find out these answers and see how the drama unfolds! King is not just a name but it's a way of life. He's large and running the South with a crew of loyal soldiers. When he meets the sultry song bird, Sloan, he knows he has found a queen in her. Life is always good for a King, but with every come-up, there is a setback and when jealousy takes hold of some unknown enemies, King becomes a pawn in a deadly game.
I throughly enjoyed this read. I haven't read street lit in a bit but I'm glad I gave this a chance. It had suspense, drama and memorable characters that did justice to the storyline. However, I expected better editing for such a short read. A pet peeve of mine is when the names of characters are spelt wrong repeatedly. Nonetheless I still enjoyed the plot.
I like the name of this book, that's what caught my eye. It started off slow for me but the more I read the better it good. King sounds like he got his stuff together but he should leave the streets alone and stay in too the music business... DeShawn is whipped trying to have his cake and ice cream.. Looking for part two because it just got hot.
I LOVE THE FLOW OF THE STORY LINE BUT IT WAS TO SHORT FOR ME I'M WAITIN FOR PART 2 BLAKE YOU LEFT ME HANGING I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE. WHAT HAPPEN WITH KING AND THAT DIRTY COP THAT HAVE IT OUT FOR HIM SLOAN GOT SOME SKELETONS IN HER CLOSET .IT'S A LOT OF BETRAYAL GOIN ON CAN'T WAIT FOR THEM TO COME OUT IN PART 2 PLEASE DON'T TAKE LONG.
I liked it. just when it was getting good, bam it was done. I didn't see that coming. But it's a good storyline and I'm feeling all the characters. Now I have to see if part 2 is out.
Damn good book, just ended too soon!!! give an absolute absolute ending to one book before you try to sell me another one, ill buy it anyway but tie up some of the loose ends first!!!
Wow this was a good book. It will have you wanting to turn the page ahead of time to see what was going on. I'm hoping part 2 is out or hope it will be out soon
It started off as an average read but got increasingly better before the book ended. I can't wait to find out what happens btw the King's stepfather, mother, sister and her friend.
