As a reviewer, I feel an obligation to share my honest opinion, even if unfavorable, but it's never harder than when you've been given a copy for review. This story does have some high points, such as the passion between Wren and Caleb. The love scenes are sexy and written well. There are some feelings between the character that come across as coming from a genuine place. However, I found it very difficult to accept some of Caleb's actions. Wren accepted much more than she should have from him. She comes off as a doormat. It took value and distracted from the intimate relationship they once shared and from the one they were building, which I admit was headed in the right direction and had sweet moments. There was definite potential but it felt overshadowed by the aforementioned element. Safety: Yes to OW, though he is not intimate with her after his reunion with Wren. No rape or abuse.

One Step Closer is a second chance love story. Caleb is in love with his stepsister Wren. Although having a wealthy father, his upbringing was still troubling and sad. From the beginning, Caleb and Wren loved each other, but just being "step-siblings" and their families kept them apart. This story is pretty long winded and we get a substantial amount of flashbacks! We're in Caleb's head quite a lot and his character was a bit frustrating to me. He came off as very angry and I had a hard time warming up to him.

Did I enjoy this story? Sometimes.
Did I hate it? No.
Do I think someone else may find it enjoyable? Yes, especially if you love the "step-siblings/second chance romance storylines and you don't mind reading stories in 3rd person.

Overall, this book just wasn't for me...even though I really wanted to like it.

The plot of this is similar to a couple of books I’ve read within this genre. (Stepbrother Dearest & Spider) Older stepsiblings get over their resentment by bonding over their shitty parents. The H is forced to leave her, and they’re reunited with the death of one of the parents. But. Where Stepbrother Dearest handled this seriously with angst, One Step Closer is the soapy version which is ok… I do love an overdramatic ride on the Hotmess Express, but 300+ pages is a big long for me.

Caleb and Wren met when their parents married; both had strained relationships with their parents and grew closer with Caleb taking on a protector role. They both secretly loved each other, but after spending a night together, his father forced him to leave her (go away to college) several (4-I think) years earlier. They’ve sporadically been in touch, but it was never the same.

The book opens with the two being reunited when his father dies. The bond/feelings are still there, but things are complicated because Caleb’s casual GF comes along. Technically he didn’t want her to come but for some reason this badass boxer lets Macy run all over him.

My issues….
◾The POV was hard to keep up with because it just switches randomly from paragraph to paragraph.
◾It was too long for the plot and tone.
◾ The characters aren’t multi-dimensional. We’re told Caleb is a fighter that wants to design cars and had a terrible relationship with his dad… but the fighting is only mentioned, the desire to design is just there, and the relationship with his dad isn’t explored. He’s supposed to be a badass protector, but slimy Macy is always squirming in right under his nose. Wren is a ballerina (again mostly mentioned) who was mistreated by her mother which also wasn’t explored. Macy and her mom are OTT meddling villainess caricatures. Their machinations weren’t smart or sneaky at all, but everyone was too dumb to catch on.
◾I still don’t understand the catalyst for the conflict that the entire plot is built upon. Why did the dad blackmail him to go to MIT and leave Wren? He wasn’t evil, he knew they loved each other, he knew both were miserable… what gives??

Bottom Line- Ok if you’re in the mood for OTT OW drama, but it DRAGS at times with nothing new introduced into the plot. I love OW drama but prefer them to be sneaky/crafty rather than the mc’s being clueless wimps. It’s free to read with KU, and there’s an epilogue several years later.

Safety- Both were in relationships during the break. Caleb and Macy were casual dating (having sex) for 4-5 months. He wasn’t serious, but she was looking to lock down a rich husband. He is never with her during the book. When she arrives at the house, he puts her in a guestroom and shuts down all her advances.

It's been quite a while since I've read a good stepbrother romance. This genre isn't for everyone, but give me anything just the slightest taboo, and I am ALL OVER IT! On top of that, ONE STEP CLOSER takes the stepbrother romance to another level and gives us a second chance love story as well. A second chance, stepbrother romance? This is a first for me and I enjoyed it very much! It was sexy, heartwarming, and frustrating at times but it had a sexy beast of an alpha male as a hero and it's hard not to love an alpha male, right ladies?

Caleb and Wren were brought together at a young age. Wren was an awkward teenager with a horrible mother and Caleb was having a horrible time accepting that his father is moving on from his mother. Even though they were wealthy, it didn't ease any of the pains of growing up. Caleb is distant with Wren at first, pushing her aside as just another awkward child, but when he finds out why she is so careful in her habits, he has this overpowering sense of protecting her forever.

A deal was made in the background that sent Caleb away from Wren, confusing her even more. When he returns from a school break, his possessiveness gets the best of him and he takes her, consequences be damned. Even though their chemistry and their bond are so strong, it doesn't prevent Caleb from walking away...again. When a death in the family brings Caleb back, he is all too prepared to see Wren's beautiful face, or is he? The feelings are still there. The protectiveness became more powerful. The pull between them, so much more powerful. There are so many factors standing in the way, but will Caleb be able to walk away again?

"You are so beautiful," he said softly. "So fucking beautiful. I've wanted you, Wren."

"For how long?" she asked in wonder.

"Forever," he said simply.

This is one romance that will pull at your heartstrings over and over again. Caleb and Wren are characters that you will be glad to root for. The fight for their happily ever after is not a simple one, but in the end, it will be so well worth it.

I really enjoyed this book.
If you love second chance romance, you will probably like this too.
Caleb and Wren were brought together many years ago when their parents married.
Even though they came from wealthy families, their upbringing was rather difficult.
Unfortunately, regardless of their connection and love, they were separated by their parents and their poor choices.
After some years apart, they are back in Denver to attend Caleb's father funeral.
Is it too late to follow your heart?
You have to read it and find out!

The book is written in present, but we do get glimpses of past to better understand what actually happened.
I highly recommend it!

One Step Closer is an Adult, Romance written by Kahlen Aymes. I was gifted a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review through The Rock Stars of Romance .

4 Solid Stars!
Amazing, Heartfelt and Beautiful! We should all have a Caleb in our lives!

The Review:
I very much enjoyed this sexy, delightful, emotional book! Right out of the gate, you know you’re in for one heck of a ride. The angsts and intensity was palatable from the first sentence and forward. I loved the complicated relationship between Wren and Caleb and I got all swoony over how protective he was towards her. This is definitely going into my reread pile and I can’t wait to read more books by this author!

Story/Characters...
When One Step Closer opens up, Caleb is a grown man, but he’s remembering a past that's filled with both wonderful and painful memories.

Caleb Luxon is an angry young boy. Losing his sick mother and then watching as his father became estranged, sent him down a path of rebelliousness. And then once his father brought in the new trophy wife and her weird daughter, Caleb lost it. His only modicum of peace came from fighting and getting into as much trouble as he could, delighting in watching his father bail him out. He hated his new stepmother and he definitely hated her introverted daughter, Wren.

Until the day he saw the real Wren and then life changed dramatically.

Wren Brashill hides behind a mask so that her pain won't be noticed and her mother won’t damage her more than she already does. She’s had no one to help her or tell her she’s worth something... until the day Caleb truly sees her.

A kindred friendship takes instant root. Then love blooms. But forbidden romance is just that.. forbidden. And Wren and Caleb keep their love for one another a secret.

Until... one forbidden night that changed everything once again.

Now, they are grown and thrown together through tragedy and life is about to make yet another dramatic change. And this time it’s all or nothing.

I loved how this story was told in past and present, giving us their story now, but allowing us to see flashbacks of pivotal moments during their childhood. Calebs protectiveness of Wren stemmed from the kindred spirit he found in her but he also fell hopelessly in love with her. She was younger and innocent and he had a desperate need to save her. And while he was saving her, she was saving him.

Wren had loved Caleb from the moment he told her to never hide again. He saw her for who she really was and he gave her a shield that allowed her to grow and bloom and be safe and loved. My heart broke for this girl. Her mother, the one person who should have always protected her, turned her back on her out of jealousy and vindictiveness but the moment Caleb stepped in, Wren found a freedom she’d never known. And love.

These two were so special together. I loved their interactions and I loved their passion and loyalty to one another.

The Good and The Bad...
Caleb and Wren had some serious issues with talking things out. I get it. That night they succumbed to their passions changed everything about their relationship and maybe they didn’t fully trust the other one not to reject them, but I was a little confused by how close they were and then.. weren’t. Wren said multiple times she still trusted Caleb, even after she felt abandoned by him but she held on to words that should have been said and stayed away when she should have been tracking that mancandy down and smacked some sense into him. The same for Caleb. He’d been protecting her for years and then he just left. The emotional aspect made a weird kind of sense but he let his pride and fear rule him. It was hard and a bit confusing to watch them dance around one another, but it was also enjoyable because the angsts were right in your face and I loved that.

I did have issues with the catty girlfriend. Caleb was a strong, no nonsense kind of man, but he was also being a sucker when it came to Macy. It took him FOREVER to see her resemblance to Wren’s mother, someone he hated with all his being, and I hated that he let Macy get away with causing so much pain when it could have been avoided by him just manning up and telling her to take a hike. There was enough drama and angsts between them, they didn’t need the catty, money hungry girlfriend. Caleb was such a strong character and I understand the intense misery and pain he was in, but him letting Macy stay for so long made him seem weaker than he was.

The Wrap Up:
There were a couple of plot holes and a handful of unnecessary conflict points to cause additional strain between the mains but overall I LOVED this read. I’m a huge fan of forbidden romance and this one was a beautiful, heartfelt journey to a phenomenal happily ever after. I loved that ending. The epilogue made all their trials and separation truly worth it.

Beautiful and a must read for any romance lover.

You've heard of that saying 'you can't choose your family' right? That is even more true when one of your parents remarry and you have a step family to blend with. Blended families can be tough at the best of times and no one can predict how it will all pan out. Sometimes it is a complete disaster and for others, the best thing to happen for them all.

Caleb is struggling to deal with the death of his mother when his father brings home his new wife - a super model who now works as the face of Lux cosmetics. She does not come alone though, she has a daughter, Wren, who is 5 years younger than Caleb. Having grown up as an only child, the last thing he wants is an annoying girl in the house, it's bad enough dealing with his step mother Veronica.

However, one night Caleb discovers that he and Wren have more in common that he realised and a beautiful friendship develops, which they carry forward with them into adulthood. Caleb is very protective of Wren and now that she is no longer a child but a gorgeous young woman, he is developing more that brotherly feelings about her. He doesn't know what to do about that until one night a boundary is crossed, forever changing things for them both. Now he knows what it is like to truly 'be' with Wren.

'These were the kinds of events that are burned on your mind forever and you remember exactly where you were, what scent surrounded you, how you felt, or what music was playing... because they were that powerful.'

Life moves on however, Wren leaves to pursue her dream to be a world class ballet dancer and Caleb lives in another state, determined to make something of himself without the help of his estranged father. Until the news comes that his father is dead. It has been years since Caleb & Wren have seen each other and coming together in grief brings all the other feelings they have for each other to the surface.

'God did she want him. He was her first. He'd always be hers.'

Caleb's father definitely played his part in separating these two when they were teenagers and now, after death, it seems he is still pulling the strings and Caleb is yet again his puppet. However, this time the stakes are huge. Caleb has a decision to make that could potentially end things forever with Wren or bring them back to where they should have been all along - together.

This was a beautiful story about second chance love, letting go of the past and doing what makes you happy.

description

One Step Closer by Kahlen Aymes
4 stars!!!

“I could lose everything and anyone and live through it, but I can’t lose you.”

When two families become one there are always teething problems, resentment and anger. Throw into the mix a gold digger and those emotions of anger and resentment grow exponentially, especially when essentially replacing an irreplaceable mother. Also add into that mix a gold digger that treats her own flesh and blood like crap and One Step Closer is born.

Caleb is struggling with losing his mother, even though it was a few years ago the pain has not abated and raw wounds are once again opened when his father brings home his new wife. Since the death of his mother Caleb’s relationship with his father has deteriorated beyond repair. His father went AWOL when Caleb needed him most and now self-sufficient he is adamant that he will never need him again. Underground fighting was his means of escape, his place to unleash his inner pain and anguish as well as the emotional turmoil he was in over Wren.

“I’ve wanted you, Wren.”
“For how long?”
“Forever.”

Wren was stunning, inside and out despite having a vile, manipulative mother. Meek, timid and a vessel for emotional abuse Wrens life was non-existent until her mother married Caleb’s father. Keeping herself to herself Wren kept the family at arm’s length, but Caleb broke through, he saw the despondency, he saw the way her mother treated her and he vowed to put a stop to it and look after the one woman he could. Wren was a ballerina and she was as graceful in her mannerisms and actions as she was on stage. Her heart was made of gold and there was nothing to dislike about her.

“No matter what, you’ll always be my Superman.”

Caleb protected Wren, looked out for her, provided her with everything she needed to realise her dreams. Every action had Wren in mind, it was his way of loving her because he couldn’t. Caleb loved Wren from the very beginning, but with the stigma attached to their current “step-sibling” title he vowed to keep her romantically at arm’s length. Until one night he didn’t. Overcome with guilt he pulls away not realising the pain he actually inflicted in doing so and now when they are reunited in tragedy, it seems old souls are making up for their meddling.

“I think Wren has always loved you. You’re her sun and moon, Caleb. I think it’s always been you and Wren.”

As with any Kahlen Aymes book you are a guaranteed a sweet and steamy read and she doesn’t disappoint. But entangled with the sweet, we have a little angst, a little drama and conniving bitches that I wanted to throat punch. For lovers of this trope this is a must read, lovers of the slow burn will love this too, friends to lovers and second chance love are all covered so there really is something for everyone. Caleb will definitely win your hearts in this one.

I was provided an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.

OMG! I loved this story! Wren and Caleb are two beautiful souls who had difficult upbringings even though it was done in the life of luxury.

Wren's mother ends up marrying Caleb's father after he loses his mother to cancer. Veronica, Wren's mother, promptly tries to take over the house and doesn't know what to do with Caleb. He is a resentful teenager and wants nothing to do with his new step-mother and her daughter.

Caleb hates his father and feels abandoned and acts out constantly. One way he acts out is to fight in a street fighting club. One night he tries to take on too many and ends up getting hurt worse than he thought. He finally sees Wren without her disguise that she's forced to wear. From that day on he turns into Wren's Superman.

I loved reading their story and it's almost like a second-chance romance because they were driven apart by their parents.

This is one of Kahlen Aymes' best works and I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this one.
Caleb is an incredibly angry young man brought on by circumstances from his childhood.
Wren is the beautiful young Cinderella whose had to deal with her horrible mother. I love how Wren blossoms into a confident lady.
I think my favourite character has to be Jonesy, the housekeeper slash friend slash part of the family.
This is a gorgeous love story, where Caleb is head strong and alpha and Wren has so much strength she doesn't even realise she has.

They only had each other, until one forbidden night ruined everything…

STEPSISTER. He hated that f*cking word.

Jealousy and long-suppressed desire overpowered Caleb's fierce protectiveness and they spent one forbidden and unforgettable night in each other arms, but the aftermath left Caleb panicked, Wren heartbroken, and their relationship in shambles. In the time since that fateful night, he’d only seen her once and had only managed to make the situation even worse.

The sudden death of his estranged father calls Caleb home and face-to-face with Wren for first time in years. He is presented with a choice that forces him to confront the painful memories of his youth and his many regrets with Wren.

"...he'd never considered they could be more. He loved her. He'd always loved her, but he'd always considered her off limits."

Caleb and Wren were thrown together and formed an alliance against the world, and even with everything possible attempting to tear them apart, they reunite many years later, and the pull is just as strong. Caleb's protectiveness, adorable sweetness, and touch of bad-boy swagger had me glued to the pages hoping for it all to work out. The Author made us work for it big time...and I sat yelling at my kindle for the road blocks to stop cropping up, but it was fun getting to the end. Filled with feels and romance, I loved reading this couple!

"He was stronger than anyone he knew. He could take on his father, win every fight inside the ring, but he was completely wasted by a tiny girl."

A New author for me, i was pleasantly surprised by how much i enjoyed this book.

told in 3rd person, we get to see how step siblings Caleb and Wren spend one incredible night together, and the fallout that comes after.

Second chance romances are always a go to for me, throw in a hot step brother and im usually in literary heaven!

i loved the little glimpses into the past, getting to see how they developed such a close relationship.

My only slight issue with this book is the cover. Yes, Caleb takes part in fights, but he is not what i would describe as a 'fighter'. The whole book is decidedly more white collar than i anticipated. That s completely fine and doesn't necessarily detract from the story, but i felt the cover threw me off slightly.

I really, really, really wanted to love this. And while there were some things I did love, the whole thing just didn't work for me. Wren and Caleb had enough going against them in the first place and I felt like Macy (who I HATED) was just an added roadblock to them being together. I'm sure that was her purpose LOL but like I said, Wren and Caleb had this history and complications between them, and Wren's horrible mother. I felt like that was enough to try to keep them apart. I also had trouble with the point of view. Several times I got lost with who was the person we were reading from. We'd be in the middle of a conversation between Caleb and Jonesy (the housekeeper who was adorable) and all of a sudden 2 or 3 paragraphs were from Jonesy's point of view and then we went back to Caleb.

What did I love? I loved how once Caleb made the decision to be with Wren for real that he never backed down and didn't change his mind. I loved how protective he was of her - from the very beginning of their relationship. I loved how he helped her achieve her dreams and supported her. I loved that Wren was a ballerina :) I only wish he had confessed his feelings earlier. But then we wouldn't have had their story LOL

All in all, this was a good read and I did enjoy it despite the couple things that didn't work for me. I'm sure those things may not bother other readers. I'll definitely read more from Kahlen Aymes in the future :)

*thanks to TRSOR for sharing this with me*

I had the opportunity to read One Step Closer by the lovely Kaylen Aymes before she published it and it was... everything. I have so many things to say about this book. Well written, perfectly woven together to tell an endearing tale of second chance love between two characters that will make you squirm and ache and swoon! If you haven't grabbed your copy, your nuts!

Consigliato!!!

Again, Kahlen gives us a story that is anything but ordinary. She takes her eloquent words and pulls you deep within the story. She gives you passionate and in depth characters that you just want to read about forever.

In this story you get Caleb and Wren, step siblings. But these are very broken souls due to their losses and the pain they live in daily thanks to parents who are beyond dysfunctional and take every opportunity to make their children suffer. Very early on, Caleb takes Wren under his wing, to protect and provide for her. This gives him a purpose, an outlet to focus on. And just when you think that their hearts will finally heal, he makes a catastrophic mistake that sets them on a collision course of pain, doubts and distance.

Can Caleb ever right the wrong?

Well fate has a funny way of not even giving you a chance to hide forever, and with the death of his father, Fate again deals her hand, whether it be a good hand or not, you have to read this story in order to find out!!

One Step Closer is a second chance, step romance. Caleb and Wren come back to Denver to attend the funeral of Caleb’s dad, Edison, who also happens to be Wren’s stepdad. We are shown, through some memories from the pair, how the two went from ignoring each other to loving each other, only for a series of unfortunate events to tear them apart right when they could have a had a chance at happiness together.

Now, years later, things are still trying to keep the couple apart. Will they finally get their chance to be together? Will Caleb tell Wren the truth about why things happened the way they did all those years ago?

I really enjoyed this book. I’ve never read Kahlen Aymes before and so I had no idea what to expect. What I got was a well written, page turning romance with a few pretty HOT sexy time scenes. I couldn’t put it down. I give One Step Closer 5 stars and will be checking out some of Kahlen Aymes’ other works.

Going into One Step Closer I was expecting this novel to be centered around an illegal underground fighting ring given the cover…nope…Caleb however is a fighter but it was only mentioned no details added. So if you are thinking this is a mma/boxing/underground fighter novel, let me warn you right now, it is not.

I found myself getting more furious with this novel with every page I turned. I hated Macy but then I also hated Caleb when it came to Macy. So clueless. Anyone can see she was deceitful and playing him. All she cared about was his money. and i hated how he strung her along.

Every dark cloud has a silver lining right, That silver lining is the fact that Caleb is an alpha male and i love alpha males! I really like Caleb’s Protective side when it came to protecting Wren from her mother.

If you are into stepbrother romance novels then this is the novel for you. but for me it was just okay.

I really loved this story. It takes place in current time and we get a glimpse of the past within the story. Cale and Wren have a past that absolutely made for a great present and future. Is there more? Is this a stand alone? Well I really want more, pretty please!

Cale protected Wren when she needed it. Cale was the typical young male making choices to help make him the man he is today. Wren learns of all his sacrifices that benefited her and it just makes her love him even more. Throw in a crazy mother and a dead millionaire step father and it makes for a great love story!

When you read a Kahlen Aymes book, you know without a doubt you are headed for an epic love story.
This woman can weave them into a web that you don't want to untangle from.
Wren and Caleb's story is no different. It's beautifully told. Happy and sad. Delightful with a little wicked in the mix.
I loved this story so much. The big strong man who is weak when it comes to the woman he loves is an automatic read for me. Those men make me gush. Caleb is that man.
Congrats to Kahlen on another well written book!

The basic idea of the story was good but the relationship with Caleb and Mace got on my nerves. They had a casual relationship, he didn't really want her to travel back to be at the funeral with him, she caused nothing but tension and problems the whole time she was there but he was a big macho alpha why didn't he order her to leave. She even sat in on the will reading.... How???? She had nothing to do with family, it was ridiculous.
There was dual POV but also you had Macy's thoughts, it just seemed too much switching. Sorry but I didn't like it.
This book was not for me.
