KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.
Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.
Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.
If you've ever read the Marvel "What If" series, or perhaps the DC Elseworlds line, than you have a good idea of what this one is about. It's stories showing how different things could be if something had been changed at a key point.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles story showed what would have happened if the turtles had shredder as a sensei rather than Splinter. This story of evil turtles was one of the better in this book. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...# The Transformers tale is set in the movie universe. Optimus Prime died in the film, and this series shows what would have happened had he lived. Not bad, but nothing great either. I think this will appeal to hardcore Transformers fans, and I'm not really in that class.
The Ghostbusters story was set in the first movie and shows what would have happened if the Ghostbusters hadn't crossed the streams. It ends up being a world controlled by the Stay Puft Marshmallow man. This was okay but a little too silly.
The X-Files story was what if Mulder had been abducted by aliens rather than his sister. Not bad, but there wasn't much to it. If anything, this is one that we should see more of because it ended on an interesting cliffhanger and there's more story potential here.
The GI Joe story showed a world where Cobra had won. It's actually a really cool concept, but once again this was more silly than anything else. It did get the point across that once Cobra has conquered the world, they have nothing left to do. This could be handled more seriously and make a really great story. (And I think it probably has been.)
Overall a good read, but I wish they had played the stories straighter and left out some of the comedy.
A great premise - an anthology of what-if stories for IDW's licensed properties - but mildly disappointing execution. The X-Files story is an intriguing introduction to a longer tale that we didn't get. The Ghostbusters story is slightly too silly but entertaining. The Transformers story reads like someone's first fanfic. The G.I. Joe one is also slightly too silly (it might be a parody) but entertaining. The TMNT story is fine, if kind of by-the-numbers. (B-)
What if your IDW comics took a different route then they did? Deviate from the normal to find out.
For those that have read Marvel comics there was "What if?" and DC had the "Elseworld" titles so why not expect other comic companies might try to try out alternative scenarios with their own titles? Enter Deviations from IDW exploring questions involving the X-Files, Ghostbusters, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Just in case you are surprised to see IDW puts out comics of these titles maybe you should check them out to see what else they have. :)
Here is a quick summery of what you have in store with this volume. My personal fave is the Ghostbuster one myself. :) X-Files (In a world where young Fox Mulder is abducted aliens instead of his sister.) Ghostbusters (In a world where they never crossed the streams at the end of the movie.) Transformers (In a world where Optimus Prime never died.) G.I. Joe (In a world where COBRA actually wins.) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (In a world where the turtles join the Shredder.)
Alternate takes on events in the worlds of the Turtles,X-Files,Ghostbusters,Transformers and GI Joe. What if certain events had happened differently and what would the worlds have become?
Out of 5 stories in this collection, 2 were good (Ghostbusters and GI Joe), 2 were average (X-Files and TMNT) and 1 was super boring (Transformers). But maybe I just don't care about the Transformers.
Fun reading. All the stories were entertaining, but the Transformers and TMNT stories really earned it the high rating for me. Good stuff...check it out!
