They might be humanity’s only hope… And they were left for dead.
The Tide Series, Book 4
Captain Dominic Holland’s greatest weapon against the apocalypse is his ship. The Huntress is the heart of Dom’s scientific research and military operations. And it has been taken. Dom must embark on a perilous mission to retake it if he stands any chance at finding the cure the world so desperately needs.
Dom’s daughter, Kara, is stranded in the middle of Skull-infested Virginia. While she and a few others struggle to reunite with Dom and the Hunters, enemies more terrifying and ruthless than the Skulls emerge.
New adversaries emerge at every turn. The Hunters are running out of time and resources. They have no choice but to rise in the face of almost certain defeat and fight to save humanity from the brink of utter annihilation.
Anthony J Melchiorri is a scientist with a PhD in bioengineering. Originally from the Midwest, he now lives in Texas. By day, he develops cellular therapies and 3D-printable artificial organs. By night, he writes apocalyptic, medical, and science-fiction thrillers that blend real-world research with other-worldly possibility. When he isn't in the lab or at the keyboard, he spends his time running, reading, hiking, and traveling in search of new story ideas.
Melchiorri's 'Tide' series continues to pick up speed in (book #4) 'Deadrise'. Acid spitting Skulls - too many of whom are now being referred to as a "Goliath" - keep getting stronger and smarter. The humans are proving to be more resilient and determined than I thought could be humanly possible - they are losing too many, though - and the fight is not even close to over... Looking forward to finding out what is in store next with book #5.
Absolutely worth a full five stars because I only put it down when lack of sleep forced me to. Just when you think things couldn't get worse or the tension get any higher, Mr Melchiorri ramps it up a notch! The Skulls are getting scarier, the government is getting sneakier and the Hunters are fighting even harder to survive. I couldn't ask for more from a book in this genre. *This was an ARC, my opinions are my own.*
I’m tired! I’ve been up all night reading this book. I read the whole book! Just couldn’t put it down. And now I’m moving on to the next book in the series...as soon as I get home from work. Ugh! So good! So addictive.
I wish I could like this, but I find the whole series so boring. I keep trying to read these books, but I can't really see any of the characters as real people. The characterisation is so bad, they're all predictable and one-dimensional. When you also take into account that the action scenes are just as predictable and one note, well... the whole story falls apart. What a shame.
Great continuation of the story. Of course this isn't the end and I am very happy to know there is still at least 1 more book coming. Lots of edge of your seat action. Can't wait to see where this story is going. Loving it!
#4 is much like #3 in its pacing and suspense level. You don't stop reading until you absolutely have to. Characters are evolving and situations twisting and turning and you wonder who is going to make it and who isn't. And the story continues. ON to book 5.
The mark of a good author is that they are able to draw you into their story and keep you entertained and interested. The mark of a great author is that their story causes you to have emotions while reading it and that is what this book did! There were a couple of times I just had to put it down and walk away because I was so tense or angry that I just needed a break from what was happening in between those pages!
This book is the 4th in The Tide series and picks up right where book 3 left off. Thought to be traitors, Dom and a large contingent of his Hunters have been betrayed by those they trusted and left for skull food on a false mission designed to kill them. Also suspected as traitors, Shepherd, Rachel, and Rory were picked up and taken to an unknown facility for "questioning." Frank was forced to land his chopper or be shot down. Nobody knows where he is. The Huntress has been boarded and taken over by what is left of the US military and Coast Guard and everyone aboard is now a prisoner. Dom's daughters, along with Navid and Adam were able to escape, but are not in skull-infested Mount Vernon holed up at the George Washington Museum.
As I stated in a previous review, there are worse things than monsters. Of course we are speaking fictionally, but in a lot of ways, monsters are like animals. They tend to be single-minded. The need to survive is first and foremost in their minds. In this book, the author introduces us to enemies that are far worse than the monsters. Worse, because they are human. The human capacity for betrayal combined with their propensity for brutal and packish behavior...and let's not forget their penchant for stupidity...is ten times more abominable than any monster you could write on a page. The author takes advantage of these tendencies brilliantly and through his characters, brings us face to face with the real monsters of the story. Those were some of the most tense moments in the book, because the characters were facing living, thinking people who had decided that others' lives meant nothing to them. That their true worth lie only in what they could give the pack.
These books are incredibly tense, but also realistic. The author does a great job of reeling the reader in and making them part of the mission by letting the surroundings and events unfold slowly so that you have time to acclimate. Then he punches you in the gut with so much intense and horrific drama that you are left feeling like you've just been run over by a bus. No time to wonder about that though, because the story is perfectly paced to keep you rolling from one incredibly tense moment to the next.
I'm anxious to hear what happened to Shepherd's command at Fort Detrick. When Shepherd was taken, they were in really bad shape. I want to know happened to Eric and Shawna and the The Weaver family. Hopefully, I'll find out in book 5.

Deadrise is the fourth book in The Tide series, written by Anthony J. Melchiorri. It is an apocalyptic science fiction series, where a mysterious disease breaks out and quickly sweeps the planet. We quickly learn that this disease turns people into mindless and extremely agressive zombies. We follow a group of mercenaries for hire, named “The Hunters”, which are highly specialized in getting in and out of perilous situations, while armed with all the finest weapons and high-tech equipment one can need. The leader of these mercenaries, Dominic Holland, is a person who believes in the greater good, and thus he embarks on a race to find a cure for the disease.
This book is perhaps the most interesting so far in The Tide series. The plot is finally starting to progress outside of the endless non-stop action horror sequences against the Oni Outbreak zombies. Yes, there’s still plenty of them, and they are exactly as interesting as they were before (If that’s your thing), but we’re finally seeing how the rest of humanity has handled the ordeals, after the first weeks of the outbreak. The Hunters find new enemies, the settings and locales are changing, and plotwise the book is finally starting to open up. I just found it sad that we had to get to book 4 before that happened! The characters are still quite undeveloped, and uninteresting, but the book ends with an open story that could go in several directions. I hope the author thinks big for the follow up(s), and expand the scope of the story and include more factions.
I listened to the audiobook version, as narrated by Ryan Kennard Burke. Overall I wasn’t too fond of his narration. It was monotonous, and he didn’t seem very excited about the narration. That being said, his voice was clear, and I had no problem following the story.
I received this audiobook from the author for free, and wanted to return the favor with a review. I have no affiliation with the author, the narrator, the publisher, or their pets (Although I am sure the latter are quite nice!).
4 stars in an on-going extremely thrilling adventure. I couldn't put it down and finished yet another in AJ.Melchiorri's signature series in one sitting!
Having said that - and to underline this was a VERY GOOD book - I was a little disappointed because I was expecting spectacular. Like knock my socks off, have me walking around screaming 'whoa!' spectacular. Face it: after Book 3 - which was easily the best of this 4-tome collection - I was ready to be amazed and desperate to see what came next. And while Book 4 was obviously very exciting and kept me reading into the wee hours again, in comparison it felt almost - well, not mundane, no - but I wanted so much MORE!!
I must confess that AJM's use of the usual trope of 'a good portion of humanity will be utter d$cks during the apocalypse' was kind of disappointing. The biker gang felt forced at best and really without a significant amount of resolution of the conflict even by the end of Book 4, I also can't relate much as to why it seems the US military/government aren't acting much better. I think that's really the difference at this stage vs. the natural comparison to NSS's "Extinction Cycle" books, in that, there - as also with "Hell Divers" I guess I should say - we move ahead, cross parts off our list and then move on some more. Here, I found that missing. We're no closer to finding out the why's and who's than we were in Book 1. Sure, I have the patience to keep digging but I would have liked something more to hang my hat on here. Just coming out of this with recovering the Huntress isn't enough.
Oh and one final quibble: I so wish AJM would not nickname "Meredith" -> "Mere", which means mother in French. Seriously, they're at sea so "Mer" -> "Ocean" would have been so much better. Makes it hard to sympathize about that ear tbh... an ear? Really? Le sigh...
Extra cool female characters and teamwork between the sexes without pandering or condescension make this a satisfying experience for me, a female fan of post apocalyptic fiction. The CIA are the good guys, for once, and the black ops under cover mercs that form the nucleus of our heroes on the good ship Huntress, exhibit unfaltering ethics and moral compass, in a world torn asunder by a biological weapon gone wild. Lots of gore, violence and use of weapons throughout the story make this series appealing for horror fans and adolescent boys. Sadly, this is not a standalone book but if you’re familiar with the first three volumes of the series it will make sense. The ending is a cliffhanger that begs you to consider purchasing books 5- infinity. I’m interested to see how several of the characters evolve and curious about how a dog survives the apocalypse onboard a stealth ship! She doesn’t bark and apparently never needs a walk, wink-wink. My dogs go nuts anytime anyone is within a block of our place and would invariably call zombie hoards upon us in a trice. Yay Maggie the Golden Retriever!
I have been a huge fan of the Tide series since book one, but there was just something about Deadrise that didn't quite sit right. Was it the inclusion of a random faction of violent sex offenders that offered nothing to the story but shock value with a cardboard cut-out of the Walking Dead's Negan and his eye-for-an-eye policy? Perhaps.
Wait, no it was 100% this.
The action scenes are brilliantly written but non-stop. Nothing goes right for the crew of the Huntress until the final chapter, which makes for a lot of action but not a whole lot of anything else. I felt like I was drifting away from characters I loved from the outset of the series since they are scarcely heard from aside from the occasional lines in the main protagonist's Michael Bay action-fest.
Will most likely read the next book to see if those lesser characters become more involved and hope that the story won't just revolve around one man and his family.

This is my sixth time reading through this series and I can't wait to get to the newest release, book 6. After reading around 700 books this year, one of the greatest things about this series is how "REAL" and believable the action scenes are. While the characters do have military experience, the battles that occur don't leave you shaking your head at the absurdity and improbability. People get hurt, are even lost, things go boom - or don't - you're pulled in, holding your breath and frequently having to slow yourself down so you don't skim read and miss something important trying to see what's next.
Deadrise is the fourth book in the series and contains some interesting twists and turns. Hunters were thought to be traitors and betrayed by US Military and their ship was boarded by Coast Guards and confiscated. On the other hand, US Army Commander Shepherd, Rachel, and Rory from Fort Detrick were also picked up by the military and questioned about their relationship with Hunters - specifically Dom and Meredith. Now, the Hunters must face another fight with some other human survivors and try to take control of their ship. This book is overall very interesting and contains a lot of twists and turns.
Yes, I liked this book. This was much like book #3 which I gave 4 stars. However, this one is too similar. The writing is fine, but I'm tired of reading a hundred times about zombies getting there face beat in. Though the author has been very creative in that aspect. Also, the plotline of the entire series barely moved and when it did it was the last 80 pages. It starting to feel like Mr. Melchiorri is stretching this series out a bit much. I'll keep reading this series, but I'm ready for a change from just the same old: run, hide, kill zombies, repeat.
When the Skulls aren’t the only bad thing killing people, when there is a lot of nasty stuff happening behind the scenes, who you gonna call? Dom and his intrepid crew, that’s who! Deadrise follows the previous three books, following Dom, his Hunters and the crew of the Huntress with all the gunfire and mayhem you could ask for. This is a truly exciting series that never lets up!
I bought the four book series thinking it was an entire series. Enjoyed the first three books. Then this one. Total filler with no real progress of the plot line. I may come back and read more of the series except I’m not wanting to waste my time on more filler books. Very disappointing.
Impossible to have a spoiler alert on this book because skipping it would not leave the reader in the lurch. 😉
As the Tide Series continues there are places you want to jump in and help them and other places you want to jump in and strangle someone. Dom and his crew have been fighting to help humanity and the government has made them an enemy. This is a great series that has made it hard to put the book down, but book number five is eating for me.
I really enjoy the story, the characters, and the constant challenges that they are facing. I frequently find myself wishing that they were smarter/figured things out a little sooner. These minor, constant distractions really keep this from being 5 stars. I plan on continuing the series and really enjoy it.
I love this series. It has a lot in common with the Extinction Cycle but it doesn't feel like the same story at all. I think the action is perfect and the story is interesting. Looking forward to reading book 5.
Deadrise continues the rollercoaster story of our hero Dom and his crew's fight for survival and to accomplish their mission. Not quite up to the earlier books in the series but still very entertaining.
The last book left you hanging, this book have you a satisfying, if not completely happy, resolution of that. We are once again left with more questions but this time we have some solid leads which, of course we have to wait till next book to get answers to. Lol. It's not a cliffhanger like the last, but it definitely let's you know there is more coming.
Once again we get lots of solid science and great action and adventure. I couldn't put this book down!!
Once again, Melchiorri scores with another page-turning thrill ride. I am sincerely enjoying this entire series and am moving on immediately to the next book in the series. I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for an exciting experience.
Book 4 was a fun read and had errors throughout. I enjoyed book 4 and the characters and plot have developed well throughout the series. It's a new twist on zombies and I love it. On to book 5.
This was the longest 37.5 hours in my life!I couldnpt decide if I wanted to keep listening or not. When I purchased it I was expecting a more sea based zombie invasion.I liked some parts but was just neutral about most. Ryan Kennard Burke was a fine narrator.
This series continues on a strong note. The small steps forward for our heroes as they continue to battle for survival against the skulls, are far from pointless. They advance the character arcs, and the world-building in general.
Don't take the 3 stars to mean the book was bad as it was entertaining but it wasn't anything new or different from other books like it. I think I'll keep reading the series but I do need a little break from this genre after reading the first 4 back to back like this.
