I love old Hollywood and classic film! This is a cute book that is wonderful to read. I like the variety of stars featured! Although it has a good amount of information in it, I do have to say I would have liked it to be more detailed, go into more depth, but I can also read other books that focus on the individual people or couples, too. I'm definitely going to be reading many of the biographies and autobiographies mentioned! Overall, I learned a lot and was left wanting to know more! Maybe there can be a second volume with other famous Hollywood couples- Audrey Hepburn and William Holden, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner, Jennifer Jones and David O. Selznick, even Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp, yes?!
I enjoyed this book. Fourteen famous romances of luminaries of the screen are profiled. Some I knew a little about, like Taylor and Burton, and of others I knew nothing, such as Montand and Signoret. The sad thing is that a lot of these great romances were not all that romantic in reality. Oftentimes it seems the male counterpart was an alcoholic, who had a long-suffering non-famous wife that he left for his great Hollywood love. Even when these couples managed to get together against the odds, usually one, or both, would end up cheating on the other! More often than not these couples did not last, sadly. Although I enjoyed learning more about these legendary couples, it makes for a depressing read when you read all of their stories back to back, as most did not have happy endings. Recommended for fans of Hollywood history.
While today's celebrities flaunt their infidelities, the stars of the golden era have many secrets. These were the brightest stars and their lives were full of mystery. I'm sure if the internet was alive and thriving during those times, we'd known everything.
I absolutely loved this book! I found it secondhand and thought it might be one of those light, fluffy useless bargain type books but it's not! This book is very in-depth and very beautifully laid out,it was a real treat visually and I was very happy with the amount of information.
It begins with several pages detailing the history of movies, the studio system, Hays Code coming in,etc and I loved that extra effort. After that, you get 14 stories of classic moviestar romances like Olivier and Leigh,Tracy and Hepburn, etc. Each couple's section gives a biography of both people and then how they met, fell in love and what happened. I didn't think it would be very enthralling with just a few pages for each couple, but the print is quite small and somehow the author has fit absolutely everything necessary and everything you might not have known. And it's well written and interesting,I didn't want to put it down at all!
The only sad thing is so many of the stories are so beautiful and like fairytales and then the guy starts cheating on her or something and most of them get divorced,so it's very lovely and dreamy but most of the stories have dream crushing endings that make me a little scared of falling in love myself.
I definitely recommend this book!
I initially felt that the beautiful layout and skilled writing seemed familiar and now I see this is the same author as Titanic Love Stories, which is also fantastic.
A lot of the stars I didn't know. They were before my time. However the stories were good to read and follow. Money most certainly doesn't buy happiness. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were a case in fact. So Sadly was quite a few others.
