C. Chase Harwood (aka Chris) made a career in Hollywood, decorating sets for such hits as THE BIG BANG THEORY and WILL & GRACE before turning his passion for storytelling into clicks on a keyboard. Between assaults on the walls of the screenwriting world, he chose to experiment with prose and found a fondness for Action-Adventure, particularly in the form of Sci-Fi and the Paranormal. Within that framework, he gets to explore the countless ways that humans interact while under duress. "Life is all the more lived when the consequences are high. When told as a tale it can be quite a page-turner," says Harwood. He lives in Los Angeles with his costume designer wife and young boy girl twins.
"Winter is Passing" begins a new series set in the "Of Sudden Origin" universe of post-apocalyptic author C. Chase Harwood. Although it's been a year or so since I read "Of Sudden Origin", I did not have any issues getting into this story, as it is set maybe a decade after the events of the first story. Here, the offspring of the cannibalistic fiends are the potential threat. Offspring that are telepathic as well as bloodthirsty, and possibly the next step in mankind's evolution.
An awesome premise, and one I look forward to sinking my teeth into.
This first part of the series sets the story up for a grand adventure - a group of Halfsies, or half-infected humans, mainly military personnel, are commissioned by whats left of the government for a suicide mission on the other side of the continent. Said suicide mission would involve wooden whaling vessels, fossil-burning trains, and shipping containers on the other side of the contiental U.S. All the while traveling with two "children of fiends", Hansel and Gretel, who may or may not be enemies. All the while also traveling through unknown, hostile territory.
First day out is a bloodbath, complete with pirates and robotic drones. And those were the humans.
