I received this book from Edelweiss/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

In this adorable book we meet a big sister who is pretty much done with her younger sister, at least for most. She tells us about all the memories about her sister and but not to worry, they aren’t just the bad ones. Yes, there is a ton of things that she doesn’t like about her sister, like how she scribbles in her books, never stops talking, how she bites, and how they fight. But we also see, in between all of that, the love they have. Because they look like each other. Or how the bigger sister was the one who came up with her sister’s name. Or how they always have each other. It was quite sweet to see those little bits in between the destruction and frustration. Yes, it won’t always be easy to have a sister (or brother) and never have a rest, always having to share, but there are plenty of good things as well.

I don’t have a sister myself or a brother, but my hubby has a younger sister and while they are both adults now and have a better relationship, back then it was apparently not always so happy, haha. I am sure that my hubby would relate a lot better to this book than me.

I really liked the art and how we go from more serious illustration style to more childish that made me smile. I just laughed when we got to the page with all the stories get jumbled together and the art we get there. Such chaos!

All in all, this was a sweet book about family, sisterhood, sharing and caring, and the not always so fun parts of it all. I would definitely recommend it~

Sadly for English speakers this is currently only in Portuguese, I think? Although if you speak French, I think there is a French translation. My grasp of Portuguese so far is at bare minimum with some help with friends, but on the other hand, picture books are a nice way to help learn a language, even if the pictures to help as prompts.

Joana Estrela is speedily becoming one of my favourite illustrators, I love that for each picture book she makes her style differs vastly and that she grows as an artist per picture book, a little like how Tove Jansson's illustrative language becomes much stronger throughout the Moomin books; her style in this book also differs per page, and takes the form of a child switching from one topic then quickly moving onto the next in a fluent manner.

Planeta Tangerina could be seen as a Portuguese equivalent of Nobrow/Flying Eye Books, but I feel like they are in a league of their own, and that they are stronger on the graphic design side than the illustration side - with Estrela being a strong force on the illustration side of things. Planeta Tangerina and Estrela's sense of humour is also very strong, and can be something that both kids and adults can relate to.

Well this was a surprise – to see it was an award-winner. To me the fact it took eight years before someone rushed to translate it from the Portuguese was a sign of how urgently it was sought. It's a letter from an older girl to her younger sibling – about how they fought and fought, how clothes were handed down and ignored, how (allegedly) everything was seemingly trashed, trodden on or ruined by the younger girl – and how love is still there, even if admitted to very guardedly. It has the simplicity of something created by a child, which wasn't exactly a huge credit in my mind, even if once or twice what we were seeing had a decent punchline (those dotty pages particularly). No, to me this just petered out and didn't have anything like the impact for the ending it needed, and nothing even whispered any need to buy this, let alone shouted it out. Two and a bit stars.

I think that any older sibling who is reacting to a new baby’s arrival will love this book. With empathy and engaging illustrations, it brings to life the difficult adjustment process that the older child faces. At the same time, the special and unique bond that children in the same family share is acknowledged.

This book would make a perfect gift for an older sibling. It could also lead to some good conversations if read with a favorite adult.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Orca Books for this title. All opinions are my own.

This was such a cute book. Daughter loved it and says it's the same with her sister and brother. She loved reading this book. She also loved the pictures in the book.
