Matt Shaw Presents "Amnesia" a new novel from author Matt Hickman.
Six strangers; three men, three women awake in a sterile medical facility. Apart from two of the group, their minds totally blank as to how they arrived there, or the purpose of their detainment. Locks have been secured on each of the doors, and iron bars on the windows; no way to escape. Surveillance cameras on the walls indicate that they are being studied.
When they stumble across some official paperwork by a company, The Hampton Group, headed up by a mysterious doctor, it begins to transpire that the group were volunteers in a medical trial. The trial for a revolutionary new drug that can abate the development of cancer cells.
As time goes by, a few of the subjects begin to show some signs of erratic behaviour. Is it a side effect of the medical trial, or something much more sinister?
Wahoo! Matt Hickman pulls off a winner of a horror novel. This was a truly entertaining, suspenseful and ultimately blood-splattered gory ride.
Whether you are already a fan of Matt's work or fancy taste-testing for the first time, don't go past Amnesia.
I loved that Matt built this story so you really don't know where it's going to go. Oh I had a few guesses but I was wrong on all of them. The twist caught me off-guard and I don't recommend eating whilst reading.
Matt is a writer that is improving with age like a fine wine, with each word, each book the fuller flavour of his writing is coming forth. It's exciting to watch an author grow and this book was an absolute cream on the horror cake gem.
The gory scenes are intense. Very. I'm not squeamish but I nearly had to skip a few sentences.Yet the book is not gore from start to finish. No - there is a great story and plot and character building before you are splattered with blood, guts and all that fun stuff.
As for the ending? Take a bow Mr Hickman. Very well done. I wasn't expecting that. Do we have an opening for a sequel? Possibly but this book is a little winner. Big winner. Super duper suspenseful psychological horror. 5 stars from me to you.
I received a copy of this book from the author. All review opinions are my own and this is a completely unbiased book review.
Really enjoyed this book. Started off as a little bit of a slow burner, but you could feel that it was going to get really dark. It was like a blanket just slowly coming over the characters, slighter changes here and there in their mannerisms. and then boom! It goes off, and it goes off big time into a complete brutal gore fest. Really finishes with a bang. Good fun read, would definitely recommend.
I know Matt from Facebook and he appears as a very nice chap. But there's a darkness, churning, and boiling in that imagination of his, that wouldn't be out of place at Broadmoor. Amnesia rolls along nicely from the start with some great characterisation and scene settings, but in your peripheral there's the sense of something cracking, and splintering. When it reaches it's crescendo, Matt's sadistically, twisted mind goes into overdrive, and all hell breaks loose, in a ferocious, and brutal finale, that is shocking, and bloody. Matt is fast becoming a naturally gifted horror writer, who seems happiest when he crosses THAT line.
This is Matt Hickman’s 4th novel that I have read so far. It’s a well-known fact that lately, I have been reading more and more Horror or Psychological Thrillers by UK author’s. They seem to all come up with very original ideas and some sick, twisted disturbing plots or storylines. The last book I read by Matt Hickman, he collaborated with Stuart Keene on a really, bloody, twisted thriller/game called, “Gemini”. I reviewed and gave it 5 stars because the dual roles kept you on constant alert all the time as the intensity built towards the end. In fact, I would like to have interviewed him to actually see which part he wrote and became.
Now author Matt Hickman gives us another disturbing, psychological thriller, which I also found to be very thought-provoking. I started with page one and read all the way to the shocking ending where you think it’s finally over. But is it? The concept for the storyline is very plausible in today’s society, plus conspiracy theorists should love this book. How many times in your local newspapers or magazines you come across Ads just like the one in this book? Seeking volunteers for testing a new trial drug. Most of us overlook them, thinking they are bogus. At least I do any way. Do you ever think of the small majority that may respond to these clinical trials and what really goes on? Well, his story will definitely show you one side. Plus, I found that Matt Hickman uses a lot of hidden symbolism, meanings or clues in his stories. Just has I felt they did with “Gemini”. Right from page one the name Dr. Thomas Harris, I recognized immediately, sending warning signals in my brain. (Thomas Harris, is the well-known author of his blockbuster, psychological thriller, “Silence of The Lambs”) If you’re an avid reader, that name will speak volumes and put a sense of dread for what is to come. Even the creation of the medical facility with so many doors and hallways that lead back to each other, reminded me of mazes used on Lab rats. Plenty action and blood will be spilt down these halls. In the end you decide is the story really about “Amnesia” or “Silencing”.
Six voluntary, participants, three men and three women will take part in clinical trial for a new cancer drug called, RGE61B. They will spend 5 days together in locked down, medical facility under constant observation. Upon awakening, four out of the six are experiencing Amnesia. The two main characters, Chrissy Hayes and Steve Hall have total recall, which immediately makes the other four suspicious. While Dr. Thomas Harris is observing, he sees a possible warning sign of something going awry. Before he can make a decision, a raging electrical storm will throw the whole facility into darkness where bloody chaos will ensue, as now true evil will emerge. They better all start running for their lives.
I just finished this story and it left me wanting so much more!!
The story started off innocently enough at first, nothing too intense, but it didn't take long to get my attention! The last quarter of the book is like a punch in the gut!
Matt Hickman knows exactly how to gently lull the reader into a false sense of security like when you are in a roller coaster and it is the beginning of the ride and the coaster is slowly climbing the hill...then you reach the crest and go plummeting down, heart in your throat, stomach dropping...I love that kind of thrill!!
A little birdie told me that there might be more to this awesome story!! I can't wait!!
Matt is ever improving and again he creates a slow burning beauty. It's not too difficult to work out what's going on but it is still totally enthralling and a very entertaining read with some lovely gore soaked moments. I kinda wanted it to last a bit longer but a great book nonetheless.
( Format : Audiobook ) "Maxwell, we may have a problem." Responding to an advertisement to participate in a medical trial in exchange for £5,000, a man and a woman, with four others, wake up in pristine laboratory surroundings. At first uncomfortable, the six begin to settle in but a power failure ignites real problems. This story by Matt Hickman builds well, hinting at troubles to come. The book is short - only four and one half hours - so the characters are only superficially drawn, but enough for the purpose of the story.
The fast paced later action is matched by the brisk speech of English accented narrator, Steve White. His deepish voice is a good match for the subject matter, and his reading is well articulated, too, He gives good, distinctive individual voicings for the characters, but, somehow, fails to generate a sense of suspense and some of his pronunciations are suspect, such as 'buttcher' (as in butter) for butcher, 'garbles' instead of gables, and 'arhpex' rather than apex. These, and others, together with a repeated phrase not edited out, damaged the quality of his performance.
My thanks to the rights holder of Amnesia, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via a download code. As previously mentioned, the book was not overly long, just right to this horror story, with a touch of mystery, suspicion, gore and action and a satisfying conclusion. A good book for any fright fans.
I have read damn near everything from this new mega talented author bloke, Matt Hickman! In fact, I now refer to him as Slick Hick in my reviews since he is just so smooth and hardcore. I first came across him way back last Dec '15 when I was scouring Amazon for something horrifically good to read...I randomly came across a book called Jeremy. It sounded really good from the synopsis so I decided to give it a go....well, the book was a real jaw dropper. So intense, emotional, graphic and horrific ~ EXACTLY what I was looking for. I looked the author up and was very shocked to see that it was his debut, I never would have guessed! He writes like he's been around the block a few times, parking his craft in the hair-raising spot ~ it's deservedly reserved. I started following him (not in a creepy stalkerish way, well, not really anyway..) to see what else he had coming out so I could read them all right away. Read quite a few of his short stories in various anthologies and was always impressed.
Then came the amazingly suspenseful Bound, an gritty crime thriller that he co-wrote with another new promising up and comer, Andrew Lennon. THEEEN came the amazingly brilliant Gemini about a couple batshit female serial killers , co written by none other than Stuart 'The King' Keane, already a pretty established name in the indie horror book world.
This, Amnesia, is his first full solo novel, clocks in just under 170 pages and is very intense, well written with a brilliant setup, full of awesomely (and ominously) 3 dimensional and complex characters. Yes, quite impressive.
Set in the English countryside, 2 strangers named Chrissy and Steve, both hurting for cash and on the outs in their personal lives each receive texts from 'The Hampton Group' asking if they wanna partake in a little cancer research medical trial, the gig pays $5,000 for 5 monitored in-housed days of their time. After brief moments of indecision, they decide ~ YES.
A newly renovated clinic ran by the genius and secretive Dr. Thomas Harris and his war veteran assistant/errand boy/ lackey, Maxwell....the serum is supposed to shrink cancer cells whilst also strengthening the healthy cells to further fight the disease. Apparently, the study proved successful in The States but England requires its own private trials for funding. After the initial well being check ups, the 2 suddenly wake up in a large hospital-esque room, along with 4 other people. People who have no memory or recollection of who they are or how they got there. Steve and Chrissy DO remember though and try their best to explain the situation to the confused ones, the ones who just went ahead and just picked out new names for themselves. The doc had mentioned some minor absent memory loss could be a short lived side effect. They go ahead and take it for somewhat learyish face value. They explore their surroundings, no way out of the building, yet every accommodation and amenity needed or wanted is provided for them. And mostly importantly, the six of them seem pleasant and friendly enough.... Also included and quickly noticed are the many many cameras hoisted up and away from reach, watching their every move. All part of the research and medical trial, they assure each other. This was a wonderfully told slow burn build up to the absolute chaos and brutality that fills the pages of the 2nd half of this book. WHAT exactly is this serum, people are starting to act a bit strange....and OH NO a massive storm just killed the electricity.....
THESE are my favorite types of stories, ones where a group of strangers end up being stuck together, not knowing what the hell is going on, no way out, locked doors, every clue uncovered leads to other nagging questions unanswered...
It would be a huge insult to this new authors mad -and slick- skills to go into any sort of detail about the second half, he sets the premise so brilliantly, so methodically....gets you all comfortable and cozy in this superbly crafted tale and then.....aaaaand then goes all out manic panic on your ass!! Things are not as they seem and do not venture where you think.. You'll love the thrilling roller coaster of it all and yes...you will get queasy. That's the best part!! CHEERS!
Matt has a way of putting you into every scene, he is very descriptive, but not overly so. He writes like a devoted life long lover of reading actually...chalked full of zest, highly intuitive, quite sharp and savvy. He's obviously really passionate about writing and he's gonna make quite the name for himself if he keeps rocking this level of kick ass quality entertainment.
So, YES, I will be continuing in my (fairly non creepyish) quest to follow this amazing new horror author, he's got a bright -and rather dark- future ahead of him and one hell of a wicked ass imagination. Very graphic too, always a plus and a must for me! And I am super stoked to hear that he has follow ups to Jeremy on the way soon!!! Excited, anxious, and more than a little impatient to see what he's coming out with next, it really shouldn't be taking this long though..... Keep em coming Slick Hick, you gots yourself a real fan and cheerleader in me. I'll be gentle, kind of...
Thank you so very much to the author for an ARC of this, it was A Real Corker ~ HEY, must be what that stands for huh.....I seem to learn new things every few days. Much obliged kind sir ~ anytime. :D
Six people awake in a medical ward with no memory of how they got rhere, and are disturbed to find themselves part of a medical test! I enjoyed this book it was a dark, gothic story of the horrors of medical testing and the subjects lack of control once they were locked in. Throw in a storm and you have all the ingredients for a sinister and twisted horror story, it gave me the old 'Hammer House of Horror' vibes, very creepy!
If something sounds too good to be true and appears just at the time you need it the most, it's probably not the smartest to jump at it. Three men and three women, complete strangers, wake up in a secluded facility. Two of them signed up for a drug trial and the other four have no memory of anything. That in itself is a problem but everything else seems fine as Steve and Chrissy fill in some of the blanks for the others. Then the amnesia sufferers start getting bits and pieces back and believe me, that is not a good thing. You know while reading that something is coming and the tension builds as you wait for all hell to break loose and when it does, HOLY CRAP! This is a great psychological tale with blood, violence, gore and some surprising twists. If you love horror with an edge of your seat build up, this roller coaster ride of a book is for you. Well done Matt Hickman.
Matt Hickman owes me some sleep. I stayed awake to finish Amnesia and by the time it was all over it was almost three in the morning, and I blame Matt because Amnesia is the sort of novel that allows you to think you know what's going to happen and then you realize that you're wrong and it sucks. No one likes to be wrong especially when you're reading a book and you think you know what's going to happen, but then the author decides to throw in a massive twist. It's a great novel that gives you just a hint of what's to come. The biggest question here is why do these people have amnesia? What's going on that we're not being told. Not only is this a decent plot but you have well drawn characters that are stuck together for what's supposed to be a simple drug trial. You know something is going to happen and when it does it's shocking and totally unexpected.
The thing is that Matt Hickman is a talented author that knows exactly how to pace his story. In such a short time he has written some solid work and Amnesia may in fact be his best yet. This is a formula that we've seen before, but Matt takes us in a new direction and gives us something a bit more sinister. We know that we shouldn't trust the government or any promise of easy money. It seems like such a harmless novel until the storm hits and then all breaks loose. That slow thread of tension slowly stretches out and then it just snaps and we're plunged into total mayhem. Sometimes it's the timing that makes a story so good and Matt has amazing timing. He's like a dude fishing and he sees us swimming along and before we know it he's reeling us in and there's no escape. All we can do is hang on and wait for the ride to end.
Fans of horror will no doubt enjoy the hell out of this because it's well written and has just enough violence to please those who like their horror a bit violent. Just when you think that there's nothing original or new in horror a guy like Matt shows up and blows the doors off. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next, but the question is can he top Amnesia? Doesn't matter because Matt is certainly an author to watch and no matter what he writes it's going to be one you should check out.
A clinical trial, a medical facility, a signed contract. What could go wrong? When six people wake up inside what seems to be a medical facility only two of them remember what happened, the other four are suspicious and wary. As a group, they go exploring coming to the conclusion that they're trapped in a medical facility because they are undergoing an experiment, one that is set to cure cancer for good.
Only, they were lied to. As the day winds on and the memories return with a fleeting dash through the mind, the participants of the experiment begin to change becoming who they always were.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this book up but I found it was dark and interesting and had me turning pages to find out exactly what was going to happen!
I have recently been invited to participate in a medical trial. I do believe that after reading this, my response will be a very definite but polite "I decline!!!"
Terrifying and brutal loved the way that Matt built up the suspense before releasing my vision of hell. I am a huge fan of Matt Shaw and its easy to see the reason he and the Author Matt Hickman are partners in novel crime. Sick and twisty gruesome and vivid!! Bravo truly freakish and gore filled story. A must read x
