I took really long time to read this book, since I had to pay attention to the different ages, Mielke go through, avoiding to make confusion. It is really interesting reading about how a city can evolve during the time, starting for example from the name CCAA, Colonia, Cölln, Köln but overall regarding the events, wanted or accidental, which modified and modify people and landscape. It was amazing as well to discover how the Dom building was so long and to find out the reasons why. Of course the book is not a guide, it is a novel, but in my opinion it helps a lot to understand a wonderful city, how Cologne is, and its citizens

I really liked this book which I bought when on a day trip to Cologne a few years ago. Although the style is not literary - many expressions return with a certain regularity that becomes boring - the way the author has combined history, opinions about the development of societies and sprituality into an interesting and at times exciting story fascinated me
