I really like the writing Thomas does in this book, but it isn't perfect. It's a lot like listening to him talking in his videos. You can really hear him in your head, you know? But this is a book. I was expecting him to get a bit more in-depth about several of the topics in the book, so it left me wanting in that way.

But it's still a solid book and it covers a lot of what other books don't, mainly motivation and the thought process behind getting out and shooting. It's a must-read for landscape photographers.

Fantastic

I bought this book after watching Thomas on YouTube. I was not disappointed. His humble approach is clearly evident in the narrative accompanying some simply beautiful images.
The combination of images and supporting back story make for a captivating read. The tips shared in the book are well explained and the tools recommended are up to date and effective.

Very nice

I enjoyed it a lot. Sometimes the subject jumps to another one and need to figure it but overall excellent book.

Very nice book, if you enjoy Thomas Heaton's videos on YT you'll definitely love this. It's more like a photo blog rather than a technical guide. I gave it 3 stars only because it feels a bit like raw material. There are a couple of typos here and there and a few transition thoughts seem to be missing between chapters... In other words, the quality of the wirting could be improved a bit, but the stories are interesting and reflect the author's enthusiasm for the subject. What I liked best is that the images are inextricable from the story, they are an integral part of the narrative and blend in so well—you really hold your breath to finally look at them at the end of the chapter as they are the ultimate culmination of the adventure, the grand prize, our hero's reward :) That's a great and unique structure imo that really keeps the story going. Pick up this book if you're interested in landscape photography and looking for a bit of light reading.

Succinct, Original, and Inspirational

This book is an excellent, mostly non-technical and highly personal introduction to one man’s view of landscape photography, from one of the most successful photographers working today. He is artistic and a perfectionist, and shows what sacrifices are necessary to become the best. In addition, he gives a lot of practical tips, including the entire final section of the book, on how to take the best possible photographs. Highly recommended.

An inspiring, quick read

I loved it.

I opened this book today with the intention of reading just a bit here and there, maybe finishing it in a day or two. I ended up reading throught the whole thing. It isn't particularly long, nor does it go into all the minute details of other books on the subject. Books like that are great, and at the same time, what Thomas has done here is give us a glimpse into his soul, his passion, and it shows.

Accompanied by a wonderful selection of his work, he tells the story behind the shots and frankly, gets you pumped to grab your gear and head out. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves photography, but especially to those who are feeling a bit of a slump. It will invigorate and inspire you to do that which your soul demands of you - to step out into the world, capture its beauty, and share it.

Perfectly imperfect

This is not a perfect photography book. There are some minor mistakes. But who cares? Thomas Heaton here is sharing his journey. His approach to photography. It is straight forward, and no nonsense. It does not linger on the technical or the gear, but rather it encourages the reader to get up, get out and shoot. A good reminder that the best images don’t line themselves up for you, you have to go out and find them. Worth a read, and also a chance to see some of his spectacular shots.

In this book, landscape photographer Thomas Heaton shares his stories and thoughts about his journey in landscape photography. His stories are really fun and informative. He also gives a couple of tips about composition, gear, but those are not the main theme of the book. So, if you are looking for a step by step tutorial kind of a book, this is not such a one. On the other hand, if you are curious about the life of a professional landscape photographer and need to get some inspiration, this book is definitely worth it.

Thomas Heaton is a famous British photographer and YouTuber. This is a collection of his photo essays which is a great companion to his YouTube channel. If you like his YouTube videos you will like this book too.
Just as in his videos, he doesn't talk too much about the technical details. He speaks a lot about everything else that makes landscape photography so challenging and so uplifting at the same time.

Fantastic book!

I like that this book is very concise and to the point, he tells stories and experiences, offers helpful advice and anecdotes. He even gets vulnerable and shares his insecurities and apprehension that he has with sharing things with the world and let's you know that if you have the same feelings that's okay, you should share your photos anyway. Sometimes we all need to hear that. Thank you Thomas.

Good, quick, inspiring read.

Not an extremely technical read on photography but this was rather refreshing compared to most other photography books that repeatedly go over exposure and science. Inspiring and interesting to read with detailed stories to convey lessons. Would recommend this short read to any photographer.

good overview

I breezed through this relatively easily and strengthened some already known tips. It’s not highly technical but if looking for a decent technical overview this shirt read will suffice. Alternatively, if looking for greater technicals, I would recommend exploring other options.

Real

A picture is worth a thousand words. And yet this book on taking pictures only needs one to describe it, “real”. In a world of fake everything in the name of narcissism, this book on photography stands out as something true. This is a simple book about actual photography and a photographer who obviously deeply cares about both the process of capturing real images of our amazing world and inspiring others to do the same.

Inspiring and fun

I really enjoyed this different approach to landscape photography, which embraces the creative side of the process. Less emphasis is placed on technical aspects of photography which is refreshing, unless that is what you're specifically looking for. The narrative is engaging and inspires me to get out there and start shooting more pictures!

Great photos

Interesting as a short technical guide to landscape photography techniques, with great photos from the author to accompany the text. It felt expensive though, for that price I’d like more or much better content. But his YouTube channel is much better...

More of a travelogue than a landscape book.

As the title says I was somewhat disappointed at it’s contents which is a pity as I do like the author’s video style - just a pity the same style wasn’t applied here.

A good read for anyone interested in landscape photography. Mr. Heaton shares the experiences of landscape photography more than getting into the technical areas of photography. He shares his commitment to his art. Spectacular images are included. A fun book!
