Beadwork magazine's special issues were mined for this collection of more than 50 elegant and trendy designs from past years along with the debut of ten new projects, all from the Beadwork design team. The book begins with a technique tutorial--Stringing 101--that introduces the stringing tricks of the trade used to create these pieces; lessons extend to even more methods, such as crimping and adding jump rings and clasps, with some insider design tips. Photographs, illustrations, and instructions walk beaders of all levels through designs like the Water Nymph Bracelet, Superstar Lariat, and Purple Power Cuff. Reviewing the elements and focusing on design, this diverse workbook allows beaders to simply follow the instructions or go where the imagination leads.
Jamie Hogsett is a popular jewelry designer from Fort Collins, CO. She is the author of the book, Stringing Style. Besides author she also has had many other titles over the years such as editor of Stringing magazine, special projects editor and Designer of the Year of Beadwork magazine, product manager for Fusion Beads, and Ambassador for Create Your Style with Swarovski Elements.
Stringing Style by Jamie Hogsett is an older book on my shelf (published in 2005), but some books never go out of style. I have the pleasure of working with Jamie Hogsett on a daily basis. She is the epitome of style and grace. It is no wonder that her first book was a knock out sensation. Some of my favorite projects feature parts and pieces from a number of companies including but not limited to: Green Girl Studios, Zoa Art, David Christenson, Dakota Stones, Harold Williams Cooney, Michael Barley, Paula Radke, Pudgy Beads, Tierra Cast, etc. I could go on an on for days. With so many great beads and Jamie's unlimited talent, this book should be on all jewelry designer's book shelves.
From the back, "We've collected 40 of the most gorgeous ideas from Beadwork magazine's special Stringing issues and put them at your finger-tips in Stringing Style: 50+ Fresh Bead Designs for Jewelry. In this book you will find:
Complete step-by-step instructions Easy-to-understand illustrations Lovely photographs Stringing 101 includes best way to crimp, add jump rings, clasps, etc...
Really like these Stringing Style books. I usually take beading books out of the library, and only purchase them when I realize I'd like to do most of the projects, and that they will also be springboards to other ideas. I bought both editions of Stringing Style. There are numerous projects in each book worth doing, and all of them (obviously) about stringing, so they're necklace-in-an-evening sort of projects. Well photographed, without any frou frou artistic stuff that gets in the way of really checking out the jewelry properly. Projects are mostly just once page each owing to the simplicity of the instructions, and really, the instructions are hardly necessary. Not a lot of space devoted to technique -- just the usual "these are crimps, these are jump rings" sort of stuff that is de rigeur in every bead book ever produced. Great for stringers.
For folks who are into bead-stringing type jewelry-making, this is an excellent book, full of beautiful designs just waiting for you to adapt and make them your own. It has some truly stunning designs, in fact, and provides more-than-adequate instruction to help you learn whatever crafting techniques are needed.
