I received a free copy for an honest review This is only a short novella but certainly packs a punch, very intense & moving. Kelsey & Alex both attended Baxter’s Academy of Art where they didn’t like each other. Kelsey finally has the money to have a special tattoo but only if she’s a model for a tattoo artist auditioning for the Reed brothers & their reality show, as the price is reduced by half. Alex is the tattoo artist who’s auditioning. At first the antagonism is still there but as the pair open up to each other whilst Alex is doing the tattoo their perception of each other is dramatically changed. The novella ends with them going for a coffee, this leaves the way open for them in Still Rattled. I’m a die-hard regency lover & thoroughly enjoyed the author’s regency books especially the Trent series. I received a copy of one of her Baxter books & I was hooked. This is another well- written emotional book that I couldn’t put down & read in one session. Definitely an author to read & I recommend this book
"Rattled" by Jane Charles is a beautiful story about a mother's love and selfless sacrifice. Through the story, a man learns to let go of the pain and resentment that's colored his life and opinions.
This is a very intense short story with a lot of emotion and drama packed into a short time frame. I guess I would call this New Adult, since it focuses on characters in their early to mid-twenties. The first-person viewpoint makes everything more immediate and personal.
Kelsey has finally gotten up the courage and the money to get a tattoo that will help her remember someone very special in her life. Because she has agreed to be on a tv show and have a tattoo artist who is auditioning to be on the show do the tattoo, the tattoo will be half price. That's important for a struggling college student who doesn't have any extra money to throw around.
However, she gets a shock when the tattoo artist turns out to be Alex, a boy she went to high school with at Baxter Academy. He gave her a hard time when she was in high school, and he didn't agree with the decisions she made about her life. Kelsey would rather have anybody else do her tattoo, but she can't reschedule, and she can't pass up the good deal, so she lets Alex do the tattoo.
As Alex learns the story behind the tattoo that Kelsey wants and the decisions she made back in high school, he gets a whole new respect for Kelsey. He even opens up about his life and why he acted the way he did.
I'm so glad this story continues in Still Rattled and The Rattle Box because Kelsey and Alex made such a connection that I was sure there was more to tell.
I originally read this story as part of the Forget Me Not anthology about tattoo artists auditioning to become the newest artist at The Reed Brothers shop and reality show. In this story, Kelsey and Alex meet again. They had been in High School together (at the Baxter Academy of Arts). During that time Kelsey had been pregnant and gave her baby up for adoption. Alex gave her a hard time about her decision and made her life a living hell. Now, would she put her skin into his hands and trust him with the most important tattoo of her life. Kelsy pulls out an envelope filled with remembrances of the little girl she gave away. As she explains her decision of giving up her baby for adoption for the sake of the baby, Alex begins to see another side of the picture. His opinions had been clouded by the fact that his mother had abandoned him for her own sake. As Alex works the two share their stories and find they have more in common that different. The story ends with the two going for coffee - leaving their story open for more happiness for both. Jane Charles has a great way of writing interesting characters who aren't held back by their circumstances and who are able to work through the pain of their past to get to a brighter future.
Touching emotional story. Rattled is a beautiful ugly cry. And let me just say I can't wait to read the rest of this story in Still Rattled.
Sometimes it takes a special story to open a person's eyes to what life might be for someone else. We might think we know, but then---POW!!! I get it. This book was a beautiful classy expression of the challenges a mother can live with when she gives up her child for adoption. Thank you Jane Charles and your magic pen. You have touched my heart.
Please don't read this in a setting where you have to keep quiet. I wanted to cry so many times because, while I have never had to put a baby up for adoption, I could feel Kelsey's pain and sadness radiating off of my kindle. This was an AWESOME book and I'm looking forward to diving into Book #2 tonight.
True experience of someone that went through what the people in the book went.through
I liked this book because at the age of eight months old I was put into dcfs. I was eventually adopted with my brother at the age of five. Then at sixteen years old I got placed back into dcfs. I really like books that relate to me or my past or even my story.
This story is as old as time yet as new as the dawn of each day! I figured this is a whole series and I have a lot of catching to do in the "Baxter's" series. I am going to have a lot of tears 😢 and smiles 😃
Thus book was not what I expected. Characters are fantastic, storyline even better! I am looking forward to what happens to the couple in the next book
Loved the story behind this. Everyone that gets a tattoo has their own reasons for the image they decide upon. Kelsey tells the perfect story for Alex to create.
I didn't know what to expect from this book but what I got was an emotional rollercoaster that had me sobbing and smiling and desperate for more! I'm definitely going to read the rest of the series!
I'm not quite sure what I was expecting but this was definitely better. Its a cliffhanger but done in a way that you feel like you read a short story. I've read many that felt like the author ripped the finished work into sections and said print each section separately. I'll be adding the next book to my wish list.

I loved this book, it was brilliant from the start to the end you can feel the emotions on every page. I bloody loved it and yes I sobbed at it, to me that makes a book good if I feel the remotes d either cry or laugh or get annoyed at the characters, it makes the book a great read. Jane's Charles I loved this book and I will be getting the following books, thank you so much for writing such a great book.
Can I just say, the connection between Alex and Kelsey is just astounding. Like, to the stars, flying in the solar system, touching each other and creating explosions kind of chemistry! The story you get from both characters, as well as their back story, makes you love them so much, and dream of a future for them together! I wasn't sure what to expect since this is a short story, but it comes pretty full circle, with a tiny hint of, "What's Next?".
What a lovely short story. It has so many emotions in such a short story that I can't wait to find out what happens. You never know what people are going through before you make a decision about them. I would recommend this story for someone who love a true beginning romance and truthful story.
By the time I got to the rattle, I was hooked. And I think I cried almost as much as Kelsey did by the end. Can't wait to read more about Kelsey and Alex!
This is such a sweet story and a wonderful reminder not to judge another's situation based on appearances. It's a good reminder that we change as we age so let go of the past.
This is a very short but great read. It was a very emotional book but brought to light some of the things people go through. It just shows that you shouldn't judge someone until you know them.
