Five Reasons She Wolf #2 Is The Best of The Series
1. Gabrielle (or Gabby), our resident teenage werewolf, meets Nikki, a young vampire who tries to help guide her. Introducing Nikki both moves the plot forward and introduces an awesome character. Plus, Gabby really needs a friend.
2. This issue sets up some lore for readers. Gabby's lycanthropy is confirmed by Nikki as real and not a delusion, and we are also told that it was not caused by a scratch from Gabby's ex-boyfriend Brian, as she thought. Being a werewolf, as it returns out, runs in Gabby's blood.
3. Tommaso keeps the exposition between Gabby and Nikki interesting by setting that conversation in a series of dream sequences that are supposed to help Gabby keep control. This allows for Tommaso's amazing art to shine in a scene it otherwise might not have.
4. There is a great fight between a transformed Gabby and Nikki in bat form. This is the first time we see Gabby fully transform, and Nikki turns into a bat, establishing that vampires can (in this universe) turn into bats.
5. We also meet Nikki's mother, who is both a boss and sort of the worst. She offers a solution for Gabby's monthly transformation, which is nice. She then pushed Gabby into a magical mirror to take her home, which is less nice. Either way, she is the only adult we encounter who knows about the supernatural and does try to help.
I've also read #3, but I'm not finding it on Goodreads. This series is all style and no substance, but in a sort of charming, campy way. I'll buy #4 to finish out the arc, but I don't know if I'll follow it beyond that.
