These stories fit perfectly within the Vampire Diaries tv show, in that they make no sense, have no lasting stakes, and tons of things that are just there because of reasons only the writers know. And boy did it start badly, quickly: 1) That cover sucks 2) I already have the urge to punch all three in the face (trauma from watching the show) 3) That Körber guy shows a pretty hollow observation on vampires. Not only is the "you are so intolerant against vampires" in True Blood plain garbage since most of them are dangerous psychopaths and claiming TVD does some middle way between True Blood and Twilight in terms of vampirism is plain idiotic. And if this weren't enough, these stories show the same disregard for consistency and canon law as the show. For instance, since when do warlocks need vervain for their magic? Plus, even the summary states that vervain is all over the USA so what difference does it really make to have none in Mystic Falls? And how can this Julian use Vampir blood to stay ageless for 24 years? How can this spell be connected to lack of vervaine? Like I said, this fits the show so far, including the "a witch did it", except that this warlock is not black." And Damon hates Julian (the warlock)... why? Oh right, because he is a bad guy. And why does it matter to Julian as to when Damon and Stefan do not want to continue the spell? Why does it need to be those two? Plus if you are bound to the vampires you use it first on, why not get some other ones that are clearly not as unstable as these two? And if this weren't ridiculous enough, Julian is not only hurt by ringing certain bells or being banned by pushing nails into his foot prints (funny that no other mighty witch on the show ever had such weakness) but he did not prepare for such a thing. Stefan does not want to cooperate with Julian because he is "a murderous psycho, whose path is plastered with corpses"… so? Damon killed people just for fun quite often and Stefan has no problem with that. And apparently Julian could not cast a spell to eradicate all vervain on the planet but he can cast a spell that will make it the most common plant on the species. Yep, this is totally within the spirit of the show. Characters hate each other or not without any rhyme or reason and the magic system makes no sense whatsoever. And oh yeah, vampires have no magical powers, except for their hypnosis and telepathy and that stuff with the crow and fog that Damon once did. You know the stuff that they ignored later on. Also vampire Julian was clearly in the sunlight so why was he not burned right away? Why bury him in the well? Also if the groundwater washed away the vervain and would also do it with Julian, wouldn't that mean he is still alive? And based on this Stefan, Damon and Julian had to meet every 24 years to renew the spell, but I am sure that according to season 1 of the show they had not been in Mystic Falls or seen each other for decades… yep… totally within the spirit of the show. They did not care for continuity and making sense either. After this, the most memorable about the next lame chapter was that the artist cannot differentiate between Matt and Tyler (because I am pretty sure yellow hair would not turn brunette in the fire light and Matt did not switch into Tyler's clothes). Because the two look soooooo much alike. The story was just pointless. Sure it did not contradict anything like the previous story (except maybe it contradicted said story), but narrative wise it was completely pointless. It added absolutely nothing. The short story with Alaric was pointless and the story afterwards was also some pointless detour into the Salvatore's pre-Vampire days that had the girls swoon how incredibly hot Damon is (because of reasons). Only Emily's small part had some enjoyable elements (like the hexed silk) but even here we have dumb stuff like her saying that homicidal Katherine is a beloved friend. And also it added nothing, at all. The final chapter was a pointless story about Sheila as a 14 year old (more like 24) staging some small protest against the Vietnam War, meeting Stefan, who also knew her mom, and falling for him. And no Southern racism in sight. A story with Emily, Sheila and Bonny (across the veil etc) about Emily wanting to save some friend and its of no importance. PS. Why do all African American women here have straight or slightly curly hair?
