When the personal plane of a highly ranked Brazilian cabinet member and his family disappears in the Amazon, a search and rescue helicopter records evidence of a massive anomaly in the jungle. Doc Morrison, a renowned geologist, is called in to help investigate what could be the collapse of the largest cavern known to man. Doc and his graduate student protégés, Libby and Peter, join a team from Brazil to explore the site.

Deep in the remote jungles of South America, the team, including an elite unit of Brazilian soldiers, is soon set upon by creatures none of them could have ever imagined. Separated in small groups, they must face their fears and summon the strength to fight for their lives in the hope of getting a warning out about this terrifying new threat to mankind.

A few years back, I told a good friend of mine about a book concept that I had thought of years earlier, but had been unable to write, as I always felt my writing to be too stilted. He loved the concept and wrote the first chapter. Over the next couple of years or so, we found time outside of our jobs and busy lives to co-write "Lethal Vision" under the pen name of Thomas Holt. That effort allowed me to understand that I can write, but more importantly, I realized just how much I love to write. “Creatures” was my first solo novel, hopefully one of many to come.

I was born and raised in the south and was fortunate to have two wonderful parents and a couple of fun (most of the time) older siblings. After a four-year stint in the navy, I went to school at the University of Alabama (Roll Tide), where I met and married the love of my life. After ten years of being a couple, we doubled the size of our family by having two amazing and talented kids. Raising them was one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives, and from the way they have turned out, I guess we can say we did a pretty darn good job.

Over the past 35 years or so, I worked as a design/development engineer for various medical device companies in California. Finding out that writing brings me the same creative joy that I feel when coming up with unique device designs was a wonderful surprise, and I’m looking forward to pursuing it full time as I head into the next chapter of my life. I hope that you will decide to come along for that ride and that you will enjoy my novels.

aliens and creatures

It was an ok read… not my favorite action packed book. A team is sent to Amazon jungle to research an anomaly. Unknown creatures appear and start killing the team.

Can't wait for the sequel. Obviously a page turner since I couldn't put it down and finished it in a little over 24 hours. It was well written. It is obvious that there was a lot of research done in preparation for this story.

What an imagination! I still have images in my head. Suspense, science fiction, action and even a little lovin' going on! What else could you ask for? "Creatures" would make a great movie!

I loved it. Fantastic. I'm reading book two next. Hope it's as good as this one. I think it's pretty farmed good for a first solo. Reminds me of Koontz early books. If recommend it to anyone that likes horror or scifi.

Review was written above. I can't rewrite it again. Sorry I wrote it in the wrong place. Keep writing like this.

Very interesting read

What I expected was not what I got. The creatures that are discovered in a sunken area near a large Brazilian city show no remorse as they begin to destroy a small group of scientists and their military support. I had figured some sort of lost dino land animals. Boy, was I wrong. These baddies are the things nightmares are made of. I loved the touches of humor, making the characters more believable and likeable, and giving small respite amidst the horror.
I dropped one star because I felt there were paragraphs that really had no bearing on the story as it flowed. I understand the author made changes as to chronological order, but not reading the original version has left me wondering if that's why the storyline seems disjointed. I get that these spots are background info, but some had no bearing at all on the story. Case in point, the woman who receives the signal from the plane. She had little impact on the story besides being the original recipient of the signal and sending the info forward. Her dwelling on the new lingerie for her guy told in many paragraphs seemed unnecessary. That said....
I will be reading the next installment as the ending was a bit of a cliff hanger. Bring on the monsters!

Creatures

I would maybe have given a batter rating if not for the cursing. Took so much from the story. Probably won't buy another book from author because of it. The story itself was pretty good, but the ending was too Cloverfie!d, nothing explained. So vague and anticlimactic. Oh well...have at it.

Very scary and written well.

The only thing I didn't like was how terrifying the creatures were! I was so afraid for the people!! But it was so well written that in that as scary as the creatures were, the people were so brave, though scared, that you were right there with them. Can't wait for the sequel. And David, you are a terrific writter.

Kindle Unlimited Read

Creatures served its purpose of giving me a quick monster story that kept my interest until the end. There's some editing issues here and there with missing quotation marks and typos, but nothing egregious, and certainly much better then other self published novels I've read recently. Gabriel is by far the most likeable character here and I hope he takes more of the main role moving forward - I really didn't care for Peter or Libby at all. Their flirting and groping of each other through the first couple of chapters just came across as juvenile. They did get better as the book progressed, but it wasn't a great first impression.

The titular creatures are imaginative and interesting, though I do wish the author would call them something else occasionally, like beasts or monsters - the heroes kill one creature, then a second creature appears and finds the dead creature then a bunch of other creatures show up and join the first creature.... you get to the point where the word 'creature' loses all meaning. I'm also not a fan of the 'to be continued' ending. Nothing wrong with making a series but there has to be a better way to set things up for a sequel without just not giving me an ending at all.

Anyway, there are some faults but overall it was an enjoyable monster story. I'm interested enough to try the sequel out!

Creative read!

Creatures turned out to be nothing like I expected - it’s a unique & creative story!
Pros ….
The differences which make this read what it is are what separates it from many other creature books. The author David Burkett’s attention to detail creates imagery that’s crystal clear & thrilling.
Cons ….
The constant love story (stories…) aspect gets a bit tiring at times. Especially as I’m not into the whole romance genre, at all.
Additionally, all the fabulous detail which helps this story to be engaging can also cause the story to slow too much at times. Becoming a bit dull. A tighter edit in certain chapters could easily fix the bogging down issue however.
All that said, the conclusion is satisfying as well as intriguing & has left me wanting more. I’m excited to move right on to Book 2 in this mini-series.
If you enjoy a good creature story, I recommend giving this book a go. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Good creature horror story

The concept of a lost world populated with unknown species deep in the jungle is an old one. This revised novel takes the well known trope and gives it a fresh and very well done modern twist. It is part if a series, which I'm not partial to, I prefer stand alone novels, but this one is absolutely worth the read. Great characters, well managed pace, and a fantastic perilous adventure is a joy to read. It does need a little editing TLC, but the few stumbles don't take away from the story. All in all, a very good novel, absolutely worth a read.

They’re Eating the Dogs! They’re Eating the Cats!

A group of blood thirsty Haitians( Aliens) wreak havoc on an unexplored piece of the Amazon. Scientists find themselves discovering a giant cavern that houses a multitude of malignant, hungry creatures bent on the destruction of anything living around this area and survival is questionable.
Along with a contingent of Brazilian soldiers, the group of scientists learn quickly how to survive. This is their tale

Interesting twist on science fiction.

Really enjoyed the story, but would have preferred it to start at the beginning instead of being a flashback story alternating with the "now" story. Maybe if he had stayed with the flashback until it caught up before continuing with the current events it would have been a better flow..

I FOUND THIS STORY TO BE UNBLEAVABLE IN THE PLOT AND STORY LINE
IT WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF THE ENDING IS COMPLEAT OR
IT LEAVES YOU HANGING WITH NO FINISH

I liked the story but the two characters that were in love annoyed me. Radio silence when you have deadly creatures around you, not I love you’s. Ha. I will probably read the next one in the series but I’m in no hurry.

Suspenseful

Good story, fully developed characters, imaginative creatures. The setting was well described, my only problem was with the dialogue that seemed somewhat forced and trite. I would definitely get a second title from this author.

Pretty good

I vacillated between a three and a four as I read this book. The three was due to badly written slow spots. However the story picked up again and started gaining some decent momentum. So, I settled on a four. Give it a try. If you read and liked any books by Thomas D Holt this is the same author. You probably like this too.
