“There we are,” Anna whispered. The dragon foal went still at her voice. Then it snorted and swiveled its snout towards her. Its eyes were still shut. Its tail quivered and its nostrils flared. A menacing growl rose from its chest. “Easy there,” Anna said gently. “Easy.” She placed her palm on its forehead, applying calm, steady pressure between its eyes. The foal went quiet, gave a satisfied snort, and settled back against Nightlove’s flank. And then it opened its eyes. They were big, blank, and sightless. Like white, silvery moons. The baby dragon had been born blind.

UPDATE: Ok when is the sequel coming out. I need it in my life so bad.

I love dragon stories and even more when its about dragon riders. My first fantasy book was Eragon and since then Ive been hooked on dragons. I hadnt heard much about The Blind Dragon so I wasnt sure what to expect but I have to say Im impressed. The story is about a young squire who ends up bonding with a blind baby dragon just as their kingdom is about to go to war. Its full of action and emotional moments. I was so invested in the story that the battles gave me chills.

The main character was fascinating and easy to connect with. I loved the bond she shared with her dragon. They were loyal, brave and smart. Its nice when I agree with the main characters choices. I didnt roll my eyes once. I thought the blind dragon Moondaggers perspective was compelling. His voice was unique and fit him well. Most of the side characters didnt get enough time in the story to really connect with them but they were still enjoyable and I appreciated getting to see the main characters family.

I skipped some descriptions about clothes and buildings but besides that the writing was captivating. The plot was engaging and fast paced. The world is so much bigger then I first thought. We get more insight into the world in the epilogue but I would have loved to get more. Somethings are left unanwsered, like the eggmen, Moondaggers visions and her rage when the crow is around. Im not sure if theres suppose to be a sequel but I see a lot of potential for a second book. Ive read a lot of dragon books and this is definitely a favorite.

This is the kind of book that hooks you from page one, thanks to its absolutely dizzying pace. The majority of the book spans only 2 or 3 days and trust me, A LOT happens.

The main characters are Anna and her dragon, Moondagger. The relationship between the two is what I crave in dragon based stories - a mutual love and trust between two personalities, not just a human and an animal. The detail in a rather short and quickly told story is also surprisingly good, and I was very interested in the mechanics and details of Fane's world.

If you enjoyed Naomi Noviks Temeraire series of the Pern series by Anne McCaffrey you will enjoy this book. There is a lot of action - more so than in Temeraire certainly - and some violence, but not overly so. I am so excited to see where this series goes: there are some characters I can't wait to hear more about, not least the heroine Anna, who is an all round badass; and the politics of this world are intriguing and exciting. I hope there is not too long a wait!

As soon as I finished reading "The Blind Dragon," I wanted to tell others to get a copy. It was inventive and engaging, with a young girl and her blind dragon foal becoming the wonderful protagonists in this fantasy world. As someone who studies and teaches Comparative Myth and who longs for us to create a better world but also sees our worst traits, as well as our best, reflected in literature, I do like the magic of creating a complex fictional world, one that calls for the characters to grapple with the kinds of moral choices that fill our lives. “The Blind Dragon” mirrors those choices with an intensity that allows the reader to get drawn into contemplation even as we become engrossed in the story. I will never ride a dragon, and hopefully never fight in a war, but I will be called upon to decide between kindness or expediency, personal profit or communal good. And I hope I will be as brave as Anna and her dragon.
One issue that I have with some YA, and indeed with some cultural myths, is the trope of a love interest, the notion that the woman’s goal is the love of a good man. I loved Katniss in “Hunger Games.” Her moral courage is stunning. But I took exception to the need to mix in romance. The ending was limp because of that choice. Though I must say that I thought choosing Peta was a wiser move, the kind and morally courageous man over the romantic macho man. I like Ursula LaGuin's females, the Greek Antigone, the French Joan of Arc because I see in them women who choose the brave and moral path over their own safety, without the need for a romantic entanglement. That is not to say I am against love. Goodness knows that I love deeply and waited to find a life partner whom I respect and like as well as love.
There is, of course, the issue of violence always present in these mythical worlds because it is, sadly, always present in our own. It is ironic that I am drawn to women who must fight for others since I am a pacifist philosophically. But I also know that my heart is passionately fierce and protective. I am drawn to those others might see as the "underdog," the less attractive, the wounded who find a way to survive and to still have the courage to love and to help others. I liked the animated film "Brave" because here was a girl who embodied courage and self-awareness, who stood up to the status quo. In “The Blind Dragon” I love that while Anna and her dragon, Moondagger, might be written off as not ready or not even worthy of life in the latter case, they both prove their heart and merit. Plus, I am a sucker for the human/animal connection, a reality that I wish others more readily appreciate as we try to find ways to live on our planet. I also like that Malachi is not simply a Voldemort; he is attractive and sympathetic in some ways. Isn't that more likely the way we are tempted to the dark side? As I read the ending, it gave me hope that Anna's journey is not over, that she and her dragon have more to do.
I highly recommend "The Blind Dragon," because it has at its heart a young girl and her blind dragon, two who must rise above what others would see as their limitations to save their community, perhaps their world. It is a well-written YA novel that shows a deep appreciation for myth, literary invention, and real moral courage that need not be wrapped up in romance. I am eager to continue to enter this world and hope that Peter Fane writes more about Anna and her dragon. If you are drawn Ursula LaGuin, or to Antigone, or Joan of Arc; if you have a heart for underdogs who must exercise true resilience and heart; if you do not think that good people are all good, that bad people are all bad, but that we must work to choose the good, let our hearts grow with courage and love, then this book will delight you too.

"The Blind Dragon" an imaginative and innovative blending of adventure and fantasy opens with the birth of a dragon foal at Dávanor Keep that's blind; his eyes "like white, silvery moons." Although Master Khondus wants noble-born squire Anna Dyer to kill him because of his infirmity, she refuses instead bonding with the young dragon and naming him Moondagger. Seeing through Anna's eyes and watching her visions of past events gives the young foal a deeper awareness and understanding, their relationship quickly deepening, his need to fight encompassing a desire to protect her.

The plot heats up as the pair are swept up in the Pretender King's secret scheme with Lord Oskar Fel and Lord Layne Trevéss to secure Dávanor as the first step in overthrowing his brother Bellános Dallamar the true King of Remain. Fighting for survival Anna and Moondagger continually clash with enemy soldiers only to bring news of the war to her mother's farm and become a part of a mission to kill the traitor who murdered her father and wants to seize the High Keep by force.

Fast-paced and action-packed Peter Fane sweeps the reader into a plot to covertly secure the High Keep in a bloodless coup, marrying Lady Abigail the Duchess of Dávanor to either the son of Lord Fel or Lord Trevéss to secure it. Skilfully with detailed background descriptions, meticulously depicted skirmishes and deadly battle scenes he brings to life a stealthy fight for supremacy after Master Khondus gets wind of the plan and enlists Anna and Moondagger's help to thwart the subterfuge. Realistic in its intensity and highly emotional as the suspense escalates this is a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Yet amid all the violence there are touching scenes as Anna struggles to futilely save her father's dragon and Malachi's show of sensitivity and remorse in his need to gain power over Anna. There's even a dash of wry humor when the sons of King Bellanos sue for a peaceful resolution to the dispute.

Fourteen year old Anna Dyer is the dutiful squire who's suddenly defiant in protecting the young dragon foal Master Khondus is determined to kill, bonding with him under unusual circumstances. Haunted by her father's death she tries to stifle the rage that threatens to consume her commonsense, yet as the story progresses she becomes not only a daring, fearless and valiant warrior but becomes more committed than ever to her values of honour, love and family. Moondagger the son of Nightlove and Anna's father's mighty dragon Voidbane is smart, strong and devoted to Anna. Jessica Dyer the renowned leader of the White Demons, a ferocious and cunning fighting force is duty-bound, loving her daughter but putting Dávanor first when she gives her a deadly but vital mission. Although the story's more plot-oriented than character driven, these personalities and others infuse it with life, realism and depth as they question their decisions in a dire crisis, holding tight to their values even when faced with death.

I thoroughly enjoyed " The Blind Dragon" an exciting and imaginative novel that kept me enthralled from the first page to the last. I felt the ending opened the way for a sequel so will follow this author to see what he has in-store next for Anna and Moondagger.

Readers of the Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle series will enjoy Peter Fane’s debut novel, The Blind Dragon. Intricately plotted and richly detailed, Fane is adept at world building, creating a novel that will attract those who appreciate fantasy, adventure, and quality literature. Readers are immediately drawn into the Kingdom of Remain and young Anna Dyer’s epic journey to save the ruling house from a hostile takeover. Anna is accompanied only by Moondagger, a blind dragon slated for death because of his affliction. As the unlikely heroes race to save the kingdom, they develop a friendship that will be their own salvation, regardless of the battle’s outcome. This is a timeless tale of good over evil, truth over deceit, and strength of character over physical might. The Blind Dragon will leave you wanting more.

Recently released by the author Peter Fane, The Blind Dragon is a fantasy epic that is quite enjoyable to read, introducing the reader to the vast realm of Remain, a kingdom far reaching in size and potential for those interested in epic fantasy. Described as being a tale from the ‘Canon of Tarn’, The Blind Dragon describes the exploits of the young warrior Anna Dyer and her blind dragon Moon Dagger as they work together to protect their home in the world of Davanór from the invading house of Fel. It is an incredibly fast paced book, full of action, love and the beautiful tropes of honor and vengeance that so many of us as readers of fantasy have come to know and love.

There are few points that I would like to highlight specifically which I believe truly make this book a worthwhile read.

First, the way in which women take a central role in The Blind Dragon, both as lead characters and supporting characters is a breath of fresh air. So often in the genre of fantasy, authors fall into the habit of promoting a male protagonist in a patriarchal society or place women into masculine roles in order to over advertise the fact they are rising against social norms. Fane on the other hand subtly takes his characters and puts them into a world where there is no gender bias or social restrictions. Women, such as Anna’s mother Jessica, fight as elite warriors alongside their male counterparts with no special recognition and in a way that the reader quickly realizes is just the accepted norm within the realm of Remain.

Second, the attention to detail by the author throughout this tale is amazing to behold. Never before have I seen an author take the time to describe the way in which a war dragon and rider are fitted out in their armament for battle and not have it distract from the tale at hand. The ability to do this is quite astonishing when one takes it into mind that Fane describes how a saddle must be fitted around the dragon in order that rider will ride comfortably and not fall off, how the scales on the dragon’s spine must be clipped so the saddle can be fitted properly (something I had never considered before when thinking of riding dragons) and how the saddle itself must be properly weighted for the rider so the dragon can fly at full capacity with nothing hindering it. Literally, Anna and Moon Dagger are fighting for their lives from the moment that Moon Dagger is born, and the fact that the time can be taken to describe them being armed and properly measured is fantastic. The book itself is under five hundred pages, yet the fact that Fane still has managed his time to include such features of description is a great testament to his tremendous ability to create a world which the reader can live in and truly feel they have escaped reality.

In a lot of ways this tale reminded of the Inheritance Cycle, most blatantly with the relationship between Anna and Dagger that could easily be compared to the one that Eragon and Saphira have. However, where Christopher Paolini had to convince the reader of the building relationship between dragon and rider over several books, Fane makes this intimate connection instantly understood through the use of perspective and flashback. Moon Dagger is only able to see what goes on around him through Anna’s eyes, making the relationship at first seem like one as independence. However, then with a switch in perspective to that of Moon Dagger (the tale is told mostly from Anna’s point of view) and his experiences of flashbacks of important moments of Anna’s life help to greatly develop the reader’s understanding of how Anna and Moon Dagger grow in their relationship, which is not one dependence but of mutual love and support. At the same time theses flash backs provide important back ground to the history behind why the war they have been thrust into is taking place.

This is the first book in a while that has caused me to be on the edge of my seat from the first few pages to the very last sentence The experience that comes from reading it is so fast paced and exhilarating that it reminded me of the intoxicating experience I felt while reading Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicle of Prydain. And much like Alexander, Fane doesn’t hold back on the violence that is used. In short, the fight scenes that take place are simply bad ass. His descriptions of warfare are well thought out and engage the reader directly causing him or her to feel what the character is feeling. Though slightly gory, these moments are not overdone but keep the audience asking for more.

The simple fact of the matter is that The Blind Dragon is an epic tale that not only has the potential to follow in the footsteps of other great fantasy works such as The Chronicles of Narnia and A Song of Ice and Fire, but also has the ability to engage with a wide audience. It is a tale that should be appreciated for its fast pace action, the thought and attention to detail put into its creation by the author and the strength of its characters that do not fit the typical black and white, good and bad personas, sometimes overplayed in fantasy. Instead, it is a book fill with ‘grey characters’ which George R. R. Martin has famously made extensive use of in his own books. Such characters question their actions and hope to do what is right based on their own vales and where they come from, qualities that cause this book to have ability resonate with anyone who has an interest in story.

The Blind Dragon is a brand new book I snatched from a friend's apartment and read on a whim. It's not one I would usually gravitate toward but I thought I would give it a try as I was looking for a fun book to read while on a few summer trips.

The title is perfect because it's about a young girl's journey to save the kingdom and she does so with a blind dragon named Moondagger. Hence... The Blind Dragon. Fourteen year-old Anna Dyer and Moondagger get into all sorts of mayhem and chaos as they embark on a journey to save their kingdom with truth and honor. The bond between the girl and the dragon is like none other and is its own kind of love story. You can't help but fall in love with these two characters.

The author put great effort into the detail and description of all the characters, symbols and plots. The story is written with a lot of description in each sentence, so you get a clear visual of being right there with them. I really enjoyed the whole encompassing story of Anna turning from a simple dragon squire into a kick-butt dragon-riding warrior to save her people. She does whatever is best for the good of the kingdom, even if that means she or her dragon dies (which I won't actually tell you whether or not that happens). I feel empowered reading about brave acts from such a young girl. If she's willing to sacrifice everything to save her kingdom, what's my excuse?

The physical book itself was simple to read. There was more space between each line of text which helped me follow along better. Even though the book is 400+ pages, it didn't seem like it.

The only downside of a book like this is that I sometimes get confused with all the new words and names. I can't properly pronounce many of the people and places and they all jumble together and I have to look back a few times. But that's going to happen with any non-real world type of book or books set in other culture or times. Luckily there is a glossary and appendices with description of all the characters, worlds and their crests, and a history of all the kings. With so much detail provided apart from the story, I can only assume there will be future books written. Oh, and because the author pays attention to the details, there are some descriptive deaths that occur. This is a war book, after all. So if you are put off by that kind of thing, be warned.

I'm still giving this book 5 stars because in judging this kind of book, I'd say it's a winner. Once again, it's not what I would normally choose to read. But for what it is, it's really well written. I appreciate all the time, energy and effort put into creating a book of this kind.

I really, really liked the opening of this book. The writing is engaging, the characters interesting and sympathetic, the stakes high. Plus, of course, there are dragons. After the first bit, however, action takes over and it feels like one long (albeit exciting) fight scene. Many people will like this. I'm just the type of reader who tends to skim the battle scenes. There are also a few quiet moments and more character development, but the pacing is very action-driven. The ending might be a bit convenient, but it's exciting.

I could have done with fewer physical descriptions of people (especially minor characters and their clothes), and the occasional POV shifts bothered me a little, but overall the writing is very good.

I would read more by Peter Fane in the future.

As a sixth-grade reading teacher, I highly recommend Blind Dragon. The students at my school were fortunate to have the epic opportunity to meet Peter Fane. Both the students and teachers left his presentation, eager to start reading. This fantasy book grabbed the attention of many of my students. Once they started, they could not put the book down! Peter's use of vivid details and descriptions captures the attention of all readers. Be sure to read the epilogue. It will leave you wanting more. We are impatiently waiting for the next book!

I honestly do not know where to start. The Blind Dragon is a story about a girl and her blind dragon. The unconditional love between them and their unbreakable bond. From the very first word i was hooked and got swept away into their world. Following Anna and Moondagger on their adventure to save their kingdom. At times it had me in tears of sadness and happiness. All to soon it was over. Needless to say i fell in love with their story and look forward to what comes next. If your looking for a good fantasy book full of dragons, adventure and action i highly recommend you pick this one up.

Enjoyed. :)

Has been quite some time since I have enjoyed pure fantasy in a book. This has been a refreshing read on my Thursday evening off from study. A story of kingdoms, family & dragons.
Hard to describe aside from good triumphing over evil, but with twists that I hope we get to read more about in the next book, ?
Well written, magic, flowed well with great characters & a rather special dragon. :) I see more adventures for both Anna & Moondagger.
If you love fantasy, dragons, good overcoming evil & a solid story, then you will enjoy this refreshing tale.

This was a PHENOMENAL story!! It had a great opening scene that really captured my interest. There was a list of characters at the beginning of the book which was very helpful in remembering who was part of which family. There was good world building that progressed as you read the story and great descriptions that really provided splendid imagery. Peter does a wonderful job of keeping your interest, you just devour the book, page after page, without any thought to the passage of time. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

A brilliant book which holds great promise

I loved this book from start to finish. It is a story about a girl and her blind Dragon and how they battle to save their home when all the odds are stacked against them.

It is full of adventure and action and promises an epic adventure if the story is continued as a series. It has been a while since I have read such a good book about Dragon riders. I highly recommend it.

New favorite author!

Wow! What a great first book. I absolutely loved the story line. I immediately fell in. I read this in one sitting and shushed anyone who tried to interrupt. I may have even cried while reading it. I'll be waiting impatiently for the next book. And really, for anything from Peter Fane. If this is an example of what he can write, I'm going to be devouring his books as soon as they come out!

Absolutely, Utterly, Phoenomenal!

I was addicted from the first few words I read. Anna catches you attention right away and you wait on bated breath for what will happen and whether she will succeed. It was amazing to see an author give the thoughts and emotions of a dragon in the story. And the strength of Character of Anna took my breath away and gave me hope.

Excellent

Epic story. Complete on its own, but lots of room for further stories. Realistic (for a story about dragons), believable action and events. Takes you through joy, heartbreak, sadness, adrenaline, the high of victory, last stands, etc. I loved it. Reminded me of a cross between Pern and Star Wars.

This is my first true fantasy book I've read. What an enjoyable read. Action, emotion and strength. Be true to yourself. Your beliefs no matter what. That's where true strength comes. I'll be looking for more books from Mr Faneuil. Thank you for a good read

Astonishing!

If this is, as it seems, the first thing Peter Fane has written, I'm truly impressed. It's a wonderful story with great characters, filled with nobility, betrayal, suffering, resolve, hope and above all, with honor and duty richly rewarded. I couldn't stop until I'd finished it, and now that I have: WHERE'S THE NEXT ONE????

Well written fascinating concept with good imagery. Almost certainly part of a series which annoyingly seem to be all there is nowadays but a good standalone story all the same.
