When Sparks Fly

Rate this book
Twenty-four-year-old photographer's apprentice Regina has always felt like the plain, dull orange next to the shiny red apple that is her best friend Lana. But then she meets Ben—the first guy to ever break Lana's heart, and the first guy to ever make Regina feel that he only has eyes for her. As Regina finds herself falling hard for Ben, she also finds herself breaking all the rules of best-friendship. Will she give up the love of her life for Lana, or will she finally realize that she deserves her share of the spotlight, too?

When Sparks Fly can be read as a standalone novel, but it is also a prequel to Ines Bautista-Yao's other book Only A Kiss.

Reading and writing are close to Ines Bautista Yao's heart ever since she was a child. She graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in AB Communication Arts. She has been a teacher at the Assumption College San Lorenzo and the Ateneo de Manila University's English department.

Her debut novel One Crazy Summer was first penned in 2007 when she was pregnant with her first daughter Addie. Being a mother has taken much of Ines' time so she was only able to write 13 pages of her novel. She completed her story in April 2011, while three-year-old Addie was sleeping and inspiration struck her again. Two months later her story was complete. After eight months, her dream of publishing her own book came true. The book was only launched last January 26, 2012, but Ines is already writing her second novel.

Most readers can remember Ines as the former editor-in-chief of K-Zone Magazine and Candy Magazine . At present, Ines is working as an editor of Summit Books. She is also married to photographer Marc Yao, whom she says she consults whenever she's stuck in the middle of a story she's writing.

This is Bautista-Yao's best book yet! The flirty banter between Regina and Ben is totally on-point, and I love Regina's character. She has super low self-esteem compared to her best friend Lana, to the point that she sabotages several of her own romantic prospects just because she's sure they'll eventually leave her for the much prettier Lana. We as readers know that she's totally wrong on that score, but Bautista-Yao writes it in such a way that we can understand why Regina would feel that way.

I also like that despite this being a romance, at least half the focus is on Regina's friendship with Lana. I wish Lana's character had been fleshed out a bit more, as her stalkerish obsession with Ben began to feel a bit pathetic after a while, particularly since it seems she and Ben never had a serious relationship in the first place, but I like that she too cares about Regina and their friendship, and she makes up for it in the end.

I received an e-arc in exchange for an honest review:)

“Sometimes good things don’t come to those who wait. Sometimes if all you do is sit on your butt, you get the leftovers, the dregs.”

Literally no words! When Sparks Fly is now my favorite novel by Ines.

It’s about Reg, a girl who was always a shadow of her best friend Lana. She’s the smart one while her best friend was the pretty one who would always get the guys she likes. Then comes Ben, your not so typical handsome, dashing, charming guy that will make Reg choose between #love or #friendship! OR MAYBE EVEN BOTH?!

This is the perfect read if you’re finding something light with a meaningful story. Every chapter is just full of magic, I didn’t know that this was a prequel of Only A Kiss

Romance isn't typically my thing. I try it from time to time, but it tends to be a little too formulaic and center around characters who aren't necessarily people I find interesting ... however, I'll read this series in a heart beat (I think this is the third from this "universe" that I've read ... I think it's more a universe than a "series" because while characters from other book show up as side characters, the stories are self-contained) because of a few points.
1. the writing is clean. It has a strong voice that carries you along.
2. the characters are well thought out and interesting, with a good mix of positive and negative traits and things they care about besides mooning over each other ... there's also a limit to the stupid drama. People fight about reasonable things, rather than contrived things ... and even the sort of over the top side character Lana manages to be likable while she's kind of doing the things that sometimes turn me off from romance heroines (helps that she's a secondary character and the more level headed lead is the one we're supposed to root for).
3. I like that these are set in the Philippines. It makes me feel like I'm taking a vacation. There's a hearty sprinkle of culture that manages to ground me the location, and I really like that.
Honestly, the only small quibble was I could've done without the side story about the friend from college. It had some small plot influence, and it wasn't annoying to read by any means, but it didn't strike me as essential to the story or characterization. But it wasn't a huge distraction and it did make the book take about twenty minutes longer to read (I will admit to being an impatient reader and I don't think I'm necessarily the norm in this).

I received an ARC in return for my honest review.

To tell you the truth, I was instantly enthralled with this novel the moment I laid my eyes on the cover. The design is very intricate and exquisite, lovely and mushy at the same time. It calls on me, pulling me in, drawing me further in. I know I shouldn't be judging a book by its cover, but hey, let's all be honest. Almost all of us grab the most beautifully decorated/designed cover we see in the library or bookstores. I know I do.

Anyway, moving along.. I have read some of Ines B. Yao's books and came to love her stories as well as her characters. I've met Regina and Ben during their wedding scene in the other book, Only A Kiss and I knew then that I had to know more about them. Lucky me, When Sparks Fly flew right into my hands.

Regina and Lana had been best friends since they were kids. They're both pretty, but it had always been Lana who got all the boys' attention. When Regina found someone who might actually liked her back, she was sure that once he saw Lana, he'd fall for her BFF instead. Heck, it's always Lana who got everybody's attention and who ended up with the guys, anyway.

Something changed though when Ben came along. The guy who both made the girls swoon over his handsome physique and witty personality. It's no surprise that most girls would fall hard for Mr. Sportscaster, but this time though, Ben prefered Regina instead of the gorgeous Lana. Could this be the end of their friendship?

Earlier in the book, I was pretty much ready for the crazy catfights between friends and the Status: It's Complicated kind of relationship, but the appearance of an additional and annoying character made the story even more exciting. I practically stayed all night reading until I made sure that Regina and Ben get their happy ever after. Glad that my black coffee didn't fail me until the wee hours of the morning.

This may fall under the "BFFs falling for the same guy" trope but this is the kind of story that would make you see that there is no need to choose between the friend and the boy. I love how Ben and Regina complemented each other. I love how photography and cooking and that tie-dyed necktie strengthened their bond. I love how the characters grew and learned from their mistakes. I love how the book was filled with scenes that melted me to the core.

And lastly, I love how Ines Yao managed to write characters that you feel compelled to root for. Don't be surprised if pretty much everything Ines Yao writes always end up in my Favorite Books list.

Ines Bautista-Yao and her lovely, lovely books!!

"Regina felt wretched and wished, for the first time in a long time, that she were someone else entirely. Someone who made better choices, someone who was a better friend. Someone who trusted more in her relationships."

I enjoyed this story because of how honest Regina is as a character. Her friendship with her best friend is something special and something I wish we saw more of in books because it was so relatable. Friends fight, that's just how most relationships work, but in the end love conquers all and seeing that portrayed in their relationship was fun to read. Got a little teary during certain parts!
And everything is fantastic in this book because it's Ines Bautista-Yao - duhhh! ;)
The romance was swoony and amazing! I didn't know this book was set before Only a Kiss and I was S C R E A M I N G when I came to that realization!! Ugh, love it so much!
Highly recommend every book by the wonderful Ines Bautista-Yao. <3

This is a brand new author for me. I first saw this book on a facebook Book event I was also showcased with. For one looks so stinking cute. I love the cover. I actually like the story. It hit insecurities and some real issues for people who may have low self esteem about themselves and compare themselves. Who doesn't that touch, besides me. LOL! I enjoyed the story line, the characters. Even Miss psycho. I enjoyed her journey to see the other side of what she thought. Well done.

I like how the story dealt with friendship, self esteem and comparing yourself to others. It had a sweet and wholesome love story as well.

Without any biases, I can say that Miss Ines writes really ~interesting~ characters. All of them were realistic, relatable and FUN, not just the leads but the secondary characters as well. I believe that the people in the story are actually the highlight of the book.

First of is Regina. She's the character that I have been able to relate to the most. I liked how despite seeing herself as the "dull orange" beside the "shiny apple" that is her best friend, she didn't let it get in the way from doing what she loves - photography.

Next up is of course, Ben - oh sweet, charming, irresistible Ben. I'm not much into the "playboy" guy trope but he proves himself worthy of the kilig. Yes, he might be a bit "naive" and "gullible" at some point but I think it proves how much of a nice friend he is. Despite his "credentials" with girls, you just couldn't help but be won over just like Regina as you see him genuinely try.

But of course, fascinating as the leads were, the supporting characters added so much to the story too. Personally, I don't understand how things are from the side of the "perfect" best friend and I didn't really ~fully~ liked Lana at first. However, by the end, I realize that despite their differences and conflict, Regina needed her best friend by her side and that the two of them complement each other.

A side character I actually really enjoyed was Paulo Javellana. I liked how his relationship with Regina evolved from simply just coworkers to being friends and that despite his facade, he's really a guy with a soft heart. However, I don't know, maybe it's just me and my overreading haha!

The one that I considered pairing up with He was like a big newsflash to Regina (and maybe to me???) that sometimes we have the tendency to underestimate ourselves and that leads us to pushing away people and things that we actually deserve.

Last but definitely not the least is Stacey. Oh this bright ball of sunshine! There's nothing to be said but I simply adored her and her passion for the thing that she does. Plus points 'cause she helped play matchmaker :3

When it comes to plot and/or themes, I broke it down to three aspects:

(1) Romance - this one is a bit tricky because being in Regina's shoes is definitely tough. I don't really agree with some of her decisions but I guess I couldn't really blame her. On the other hand, her banters with Ben are just adorable but it felt real. Also, they actually had tough waters in their relationship especially that incident with Alexa (who btw, I think is an amazingly written antagonist 'cause you just will ~hate~ her, you guys.)

(2) Friendship - another heavy weighting aspect for me. The book didn't solely focus on #1, but rather, balances it with themes of friendship. Reading about Regina and Lana would make you wanna hug your best friend and just tell him/her how special she is and how blessed you are to have him/her.

(3) Self - although the first two took up most of the focus, Miss Ines did not forget the importance of loving and believing in yourself too. This aspect actually hits home to my heart the most. It may not seem like it but I actually have self confidence issues and like Regina, I have the tendency to see others as simply ~more~ and thus, deserving the better things. I realized that maybe it's time that I accept that I may not be perfect but there will be people believing that I deserve good things in life too :)

Aside from this, it showed me how important it is to pursue your passion even though it may seem impractical. Lastly, I realized that occasionally wanting things for yourself and doing mistakes don't automatically make you a bad person. Don't be too hard on yourself for feeling things you ~think~ you shouldn't but is really just unavoidable.

I just really need a Nicolas spin-off right now haha! :D

I loved the author's Only a Kiss, and was super happy to see there was a prequel story. This one didn't hit me hard in the feels like the first book did, but it was still a sweet romance. Bautista-Yao's characters come alive on the page and I loved spending time with them.

***I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review, which was first posted on book blog Will Read for Feels.

When I signed up to read Ines Bautista-Yao’s When Sparks Fly in advance of a review post to be scheduled on its release day (which happens to be today!), I knew two things: one was that this would be a “sweet” romance rather than a steamy one, based on the author’s style (and by the way I bear no relation to her); the other was that this would likely deliver on some pretty serious feels, again based on reads of other books by the author. Both turned out to be true, but the second delivered on feels I totally didn’t expect!

I’ll be honest and say that while I expected a few counterpoints to the hos-before-bros philosophy I subscribe to, given the blurb, I was not expecting to rage on it as much and for as long as I did. I honestly spent most of the book actively disliking the main character, Regina, and all my notes about her were pretty derogatory! Which is pretty new for me. I felt like she was blaming her clueless if admittedly somewhat self-absorbed friend for the issues and insecurities she adopted on her own, and moreover that she was an emotional coward and traitorous friend (not because she fell for the guy who dumped said friend, but because she refused to come clean).

I was seriously mad at Regina. Here’s a note I scribbled down while reading:

“Could you really consider someone your best friend if she was the cause of your insecurity?” —Give me a break from your whining! Can you consider yourself her best friend if you’re blaming her for your own lack of a love life when you’re the reason guys go for her instead of you? You’re the cause of your own d****d insecurity!

But wait! Things get better!

It was actually only in the last 25 to 30% of the book that I started respecting her as a character and appreciating her. The two things that convinced me were (1) the lengths to which she would go to fix the relationships she broke and (2) the self respect she gained, which was sufficient to help her throw off the rather significant martyr complex she had going on. I have to salute the author for this one, because I went from wanting to stomp on this character’s face and curse her to a realm where she did not have or deserve friends or lovers to thinking she wasn’t so bad after all and admiring the decisions she made after she’d realized her mistakes in thinking and action. Talk about a comeback queen!

What kept me going through the first half of the novel (besides waiting for the ax to fall as far as Regina was concerned) was the supporting cast of characters. I thought Regina’s best friend Lana was a hoot, if an admittedly selfish and occasionally obtuse one. I thought Ben was kind of cute, and a testament to the notion players make the most devoted boyfies. His sister was absolutely adorbz, and I am desperately hoping to see her in her own love story courtesy of the author sometime soon. And I am still totally crushing on Regina’s boss, photographer extraordinaire Paulo, who must, must, must have his own story, else I’m liable to make one up in my head in desperation. I also totally was charmed by the cameos by Only a Kiss‘s Katie and Chris!

Also, I would totally eat at The Sunny Side Up, if it were a real restaurant!

Anyway, I have to say this book led me on an emotional ride that was so full of ups and downs I was surprised not to emerge from reading it in the middle of a carnival. And while I wish there had been some additional proofreading/copy editing done (although given that I read an ARC of this novel, it may well have been done after I got it), it was still a smooth and easy read. I also seriously hope to see books or even short stories featuring the abovementioned characters, because they were painted so richly, it would be a shame not to see them star in their own romances!

Okay. So I took me this long to finish reading this even though I still have a trilogy to worry about. But I guess it doesn’t matter. It’s because I got to enjoy reading this story no matter how some of the scenes here really riled up my heart not once, but many times. Okay, I hope that one made any sense. I tend to write something, even in a book review, as if I’m rambling.

Before I forget, thank you, Bookish Diaries, for letting me participate in this blog tour. Ansd not just a blog touer, I must say. It’s a release day blog tour, which means one is also extremely important to the author, as well. This is the first time I read a book authored by Ines Bautista Yao so I don’t have anything to compare this novel’s writing style to another of her works. So for now, I’ll just write what I think about this.

For one, I don’t have any problems with the story’s pacing. It’s not that fast and not that slow, as well. In 20 chapters, everything was covered up, though I still have a few questions that I’d just push aside for now. Maybe if I read it again, I’d be able to find an answer.

Now for the characters.

Regina sort of resembled me when it comes to her patience in waiting. At least, I know I did the same thing. I’ve been doing it till now. Probably even her pessimism and her imagination getting ahead of her. Well, not all the time. But the one thing that I could truly relate to her was her insecurity that even lets her push aside most of what she wanted when she could already feel that someone was better than her. In Regina’s case, it’s always Lana who is better and more noticeable. In my case, it’s my sister.

Lana did come up to me as a brat who was so used in getting what she wanted. Or maybe because she was so used having the attention drawn to her natural charm that she was like that. But I was glad she really valued her friendship with Regina even though she walked away and wallowed for a while. That friendship saved Regina from trouble, whether they admit it or not.

As for Ben, a typical playboy. Or not. Probably just a charmer. But when love finally hits him, man! I really don’t know what to call him. But I’m sure he’s dedicated, can be a little tongue-tied when his usual tactics don’t work, and definitely too trusting. At least he was with Alexa. Seriously, I really hate that girl. But I’ll forget about her. At least, when he finally crossed paths with Regina, he knew when to tone down his friendliness with other women. At that point, I knew he was serious about committing with someone.

Opportunities knocked, and each of them did what they could to never let the chance disappear. There might have been some setbacks, some misunderstandings, some mistakes along the way. It even came to a point where they nearly neglected or pushed away what could really make them happy. Yet in the end, it’s those who took the risk to grab that chance laid in front of them who finally achieved the closure and happiness that they’ve waited for so long. At the very least, this is what I thought about the story.

I’m glad I was given a chance to read this one.

When Ines Bautista Yao posted about her upcoming book on Facebook, I almost jumped and down from excitement. First of all, I’ve read her previous work, Only a Kiss and Plain Vanilla, and swooned over both. She just has a way of writing certain details in her books that result in a KILIG EXPLOSION, like a certain boy writing down his number on a coffee cup hoping you’ll give him a call. I’ll stop now before I spoil more things. Haha.

When Sparks Fly is about a twenty-four-year-old wannabe photographer named Regina. Out of all the guys in the world, she meets and ends up falling for Ben, the sportscaster who kinda sorta broke her best friend’s heart. Complicated doesn’t even begin to cover it.

I loved so many things about When Sparks Fly, but Regina was the highlight of the entire book for me. We’ve all been her at one point in our lives or another, a little insecure and comparing ourselves to other people who we think are prettier, smarter, and just overall better. We all know what it’s like to not fight for what we want, because we’re a little scared that we might actually deserve it. The boy, the job, whatever it is. Seeing her transformation from the girl on the sidelines to someone who fought tooth and nail for what she wanted was such a satisfying part of the reading experience.

When Sparks Fly also depicted a solid friendship that I couldn’t help but root for, maybe even more than the OTP. Haha. I’m sad to say this, but fiction nowadays usually depicts the female protagonist’s best friend as a horrible person. You end up wondering why this seemingly amazing character is friends with such a bitch in the first place, but I’m so happy that this wasn’t the case with When Sparks Fly. Lana and Regina are actually best friends, not because they grew up together or circumstances keep forcing them together, but because they like and care about one another.

*SPOILER* When the shit finally hit the fan, I was glad that they didn’t argue about who got to end up with the boy but about their apparent lack of trust in one another. I hate it when two amazing girls fight over one boy in books, no matter how gorgeous he is, and I love that Lana and Regina’s friendship didn’t go down that route. *END OF SPOILER*

Yay for positive portrayals of female friendships in books!

And the OTP, you guys! Ben and Regina have got to be one of my favorite OTPs in a long time. Maybe it’s because I’ve been reading too many books with alpha males that I found Ben refreshing as a character. Don’t get me wrong. I love alpha males, but it’s nice to come across a truly nice guy once in a while (even if he does seem like a player on the surface).

Overall, I highly recommend picking up a copy of When Sparks Fly. Great friendship + hot nice guy + side characters who deserve their own stories = AWESOME BOOK.

Gosh, look at that lovely cover. I can't choose which I liked best - the warm colors, the paper-cut design that looks like it will just pop out or will be ruined if I run my hand over it, or that really catchy title that just spells love and romance and all the sweet stuff. Right?

Well, not exactly. Ines's new book is a sweet romance, but there's a lot of things in Regina and Ben and Lana's story that kind of hurt. See, Regina has always been the good friend -- a loyal wingwoman of sorts to Lana, who was the shiny red apple to her plain dull orange. But when Lana gets her heart broken for the first time, Regina was bent on cursing the guy who did that...until she meets him while she's out with Lana and starts falling for him. It's not something she should do, given that Lana is her best friend and she's clearly not truly over him and again, she's her best friend. But the heart is a hard thing to fight, and soon, Regina finds herself spending more and more time with Ben, while thinking about how she deserves this kind of love, too. Will she find a way to keep her friend and the love of her life, or will she have to lose one to keep another?

There's a lot of sweetness and kilig in Regina and Ben's story, and I really liked Ben from the start, with that coffee cup move. That initial spark set the pace for the rest of the book, and everything about how their relationship unfolded felt sweet and natural but not too sweet -- I could totally imagine (and wish, haha) a guy doing what Ben did. It was a pleasure to read how their relationship grew, but the feeling that something was hovering over their heads was there and would not be shaken off. Because things have to fall somewhere, and boy, did it fall. And boy, was it painful. I've never been in that situation (thank God), but I've had friendship issues in the past and that definitely hurt more than having love issues. Ack.

I love how things were treated in this book in terms of that -- how the characters were very three-dimensional that you know there was more to the initial impressions about them. I liked how the complications of having a relationship like Ben and Regina's were discussed with care that all the loose ends were tied very well in the end. I admit that I was a little surprised with the twist with that other character, but it set the stage for the redemption of the main cast.

Overall, When Sparks Fly left me with a big smile and a happy sigh at the end of the book. :) If you like sweet romance and good friendships in a book, I totally recommend this.

Oh, and special mention to Paulo, Regina's boss. Best supporting character and I'm hoping he gets a spin-off? :)

*Disclaimer: I have received a copy in exchange for an honest review. This does affect my opinion on the book or the content of my review.*

Ines has done it again. She made me a slave of the intoxicating feels of When Sparks Fly.

How do you stop yourself from falling in love? How can I stop loving this book? Oh dear, it seems there is NO WAY.

If you have read my review of One Crazy Summer, I already declared with my review that I love Ines' writing but When Sparks Fly made me love her even more! I'll tell you why.

When Sparks Fly is the story of Regina, a twenty-four-year-old photographer appretince. She was already to being a shadow to her oh-so-gorgeous bestfriend, Lana. The she meets Ben the first guy that has EVER break Lana's heart and unexpectedly, he falls in love with Ben a.k.a Mr. Hotshot I'm a Celebrity How Can She Not Fall For Me. BUT "This book isn't just about love... it's about friendship, courage and self-discovery...,"as C.P. Santi says. I couldn't agree more. I was a witness on how she overcame her insecurities with Lana, how she has fallen love again and how she realized she also deserves her share of the spotlight.

As for the plot & setting:

With this book, I realized that Ines loves a good use of trope. She can transform any cliche plot with her amazing writing skills and imagination!

I love the 90's vibe of this book. It's so awesome to read about a time before I was even born!

This book is centered around Manila --- the place where dreams come true. It just feels right. Also, it's good to be back in Silay City, Negros Occidental. I can sense One Crazy Summer feels coming back to me.

As for the characters:

I admit that while I am reading, I kinda hate Lana a bit. I know she's heartbroken but that's not enough reason to act like a brat. Everything is new to her since Ben was the first one to break her heart but why can't she just be happy for her best friend? Many things are to be considered here but acceptance and understanding can do the trick.

Ben Marquez is one of the sweetest, most thoughtful and understanding male character I know. His attitude & gestures are to die for! I know he can be a little bit cocky sometimes but it can never top the admiration I feel for him. Reg is so lucky to have him.

Regina. Regina. Regina. This Salvador is the no doubt, selfless. Most of the time, she thinks about others before her own self. This trait she has is good but sometimes it's not. Because of her selflessness and getting used to be to the shadow, she almost lost the chance to be truly happy. Reg, you can be selfish sometimes, you know.

So, to sum it up, I give When Sparks Fly 4.2 stars.

The first time I read Ines Bautista-Yao’s latest romance novel, When Sparks Fly, I recalled another book that I really loved, Something Borrowed by Emily Griffin. Although Emily Griffin’s book has a higher heat level and was way more complicated in terms of conflict (MC Rachel found herself in bed with her best friend’s fiancé after a birthday party), the similarities between Rachel and Regina’s dilemmas were undeniable.

At both the books’ core, is a story of friendship and what we “sacrifice” for the sake of our friends. Regina had always felt like her best friend Lana was the better of the two of them, that no one would ever want her (Regina) after they had met Lana, so Regina sabotaged most of her relationships, by “giving” the guys she liked away to Lana. Enter Ben, who rejected Lana first before he met and pursued Regina, and suddenly Regina found hope that she would have her own happy ending. But when Lana started treating Ben as the one who broke her heart, Regina felt like she had to sacrifice Ben again in order to make Lana feel better.

Ines’s take on the story is sweet, refreshing and light, but you still feel the angst that Regina felt every time she had to sacrifice her happiness for the sake of friendship, or to be more accurate, for the sake of what she thought was the norm. While it is easy to root for Regina all throughout the story, I love Lana, and since I cannot give away spoilers, you would just have to read the book to find out why.

Of course Ben is the perfect guy to be fought over by multiple women. I love that he chose to love Regina, favoring the “orange in the sea of shiny apples,” and recognizing in her the quiet beauty that she herself had not seen in herself.

I love that Regina went on a journey of self-discovery and when she had found her confidence and her peace, she was able to become a better friend, a better girlfriend.

My take away from the story really is this: Everyone deserves to be happy, but you have to get out of your comfort zone, take a leap of faith, in order to pursue this happiness. Nothing comes to anyone who just waits to be handed something without working for it. This is true for love, for friendship and for life in general.

Anything written by Ines Bautista-Yao is an absolute must-buy for me. And when I learned that When Sparks Fly is a sort of prequel to Only a Kiss (which I adored! Read it if you haven’t!), I couldn't help but squee in glee. And yes, that rhymes. That’s how much I was excited about this book.
And it did not disappoint!!!
At once I empathized with Regina and the layers she used to protect herself from hurt. She loves her best friend Lana, but at the same time, there’s a hint of resentment---after all, Lana always gets the guys.
Hold on right there. This is no evil-best-friend takes advantage of the kind-hearted-wimpy-heroine story. Because Lana, though flighty, is adorable and loveable. And Regina, well she’s no pushover. It’s just that they have issues . . . insecurities . . . small things that are natural in the course of their long relationship . . . not enough to break them, but not big enough to discuss at random.
That’s where Ben comes in. The only guy to break Lana’s heart, he’s not only attractive, but also persistent. And he’s interested in Regina.
Yep, that throws her for a loop because she’s attracted to him too.
Regina loves Lana. So of course she hems and haws and tries to push him away. But ultimately, love triumphs and happiness reigns (the story isn’t as straightforward as this, but I’m trying not to give the whole thing away).
Aside from Ben and Regina, I enjoyed all the supporting characters . . . Lana and Paulo (Hihihi), Nicolas (Drool. He totally deserves his own book!), Alexa (Ooo! I wanted to strangle her!), and of course, Katie and Chris (from Only A Kiss) made a cameo! Hihihi.
One other thing I loved---the story is set in the 90s! I’m a GenXer and I loooved all the fashion (jeans that didn't cut off your circulation!) and song (I don’t care who you are as long as you love me) references.
This story is not only about love . . . it’s about friendship, sacrifice, courage, and self-discovery. Read it. Because a story like this deserves to be read :-)

I have a number of concerns with “ When Sparks Fly”. First, it lacks heat. I expected cheek-burning, ovary-stirring kissing scenes and stuff but it did not deliver. The writing is crisp and polished but the story is too dry and maybe not just what I’m looking for from this particular genre.

Second, I’m not sold on the love triangle among Regina, Ben and Lana. The tension between Lana and Regina is not tight enough. I like my love triangles tricky and surprising but this one is too predictable. Also, the resolution of the love triangle felt rushed. Instead of focusing on the love triangle and using it to maximum effect, the book chose to underdevelop it and proceeded to add another character (Alexa) into the mix.

Lastly, the characters have the personality of a paper doll. Maybe because this is a sort of a prequel to another book that I haven't read so I'm missing out on some character nuances? Whatever the case, I feel sorry that I saw no sparks flying between the love birds of this book.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

The first time that I read the synopsis of When Sparks Fly, it intrigued my interest, especially the line: Regina has always felt like the plain, dull orange next to the shiny red apple that is her best friend Lana. I somehow felt I'm Regina and I might relate to her situation.

Reading When Sparks Fly, I had mixed emotions: I laughed. I giggled. I cried.

Yes, there was part of the story that made me remember my past love and it somehow opened my eyes that it is time to finally open my heart to fall in love just like Regina who was torn between her love and loyalty for Lana or let herself filled with love and joy from Ben.

There was an unexpected twist in the story that it made more exciting. I like how Miss Ines incorporated friendship, love and family in this superbly made novel.

I can't wait for the print copy of When Sparks Fly and I will surely buy it once it will be out. By the way, I'm a fan of the book cover! Great job!

Congratulations Miss Ines! Hoping for more inspiring and lovely stories from one of my favorite Filipino romance authors! (Insert: Paulo and Lana, next? :) )

Ines Bautista-Yao is one of my favorite romance authors, and her latest book does not disappoint! She describes her characters so realistically and flawlessly that I could easily picture them in my head. When I first learned the premise of this story, where the main character Regina feels insecure because of her gorgeous best friend, I could immediately relate to her. I did not find it hard to sympathize with Regina because I knew exactly how she felt. And of course there were so many romantic, feels-inducing moments with Ben! The only thing I didn't like was the story arc of Alexa, who attempted to steal Ben's heart. She was very annoying (and her actions were somewhat predictable), but then again, I guess that's what made her an effective villain. In the end, I love how this story is really about Regina's journey—not only of finding the courage to fall in love, but also of learning to love herself. This book is a prequel to "Only A Kiss" and if you haven't read that yet, I highly suggest you do so. :)

After reading this intensely engaging story, I can definitely say the title is perfect! The cover is so beautiful and was my initial draw, but Regina, the MC stole my heart immediately. I alternately ached for and rejoiced with her during the ups and downs of best friends, romance, unpredictable bosses, and The Enemy! All the major and minor characters were so well drawn, they became real people to this reader, and the settings were so interesting and flavorful, I felt like I'd visited The Philippines. I love the inclusion of words from the local dialects, interesting foods (that you can smell and almost taste) and the glossary at the back. This is a must-read for fans of sweet romance with a bite (and no, there are no vampires, just an unexpected wild cat).

Ms. Ines wrote about a girl who fell in love and found herself torn between love and friendship. She didn’t give up on her dreams despite the struggles she’s forced to face, and she learned when to take a break from making other people happy and give herself a chance, too.

Love can come in the most unexpected way, love can be daunting, and it’s okay to be scared – but not forever. Learn when to fight, when to give up, when to wait, and when to go for it. Life’s crazy, but there are people who make the ride worth it.

When sparks fly, drop everything now and live in the moment. It’s not every day life gives you fireworks.❤

Reading a Bautista-Yao book makes me feel like I've been blasted into my adolescent past--a time when I devoured Sweet Valley High and Sweet Dreams. And When Sparks Fly is no exception. Set in the 90s, the era of my teenhood, I quickly warmed up to this charming tale of fighting for love and gaining self-confidence. Apart from its gorgeous book cover, the story itself will hook you with the main character's journey toward a more self-caring attitude. I adore the side characters as well, and I wish one of them (hint: a hunk of a probinsiyano) gets his own book soon! Read this and get your much-needed supply of kilig!

When Sparks Fly will definitely be a 5 Star for most readers and if I wasn’t a picky reader I would also give it a 5.

This is such an adorable, quick read. The writing is clean and the pace is good.

I loved the characters, especially Regina and Ben. They are so cute together and I could see them as real people falling in love despite of her bestie, Lana. I also liked Lana, and would love to see her end up with a great guy, who’ll keep her grounded.

I’m putting her other books on my TBR list.

I received this free book in exchange for an honest review.

While this was a contemporary romance at heart, this was also a story about friendships, their complications, and the love between best friends. Regina did a lot of growing in this book, so that she could finally see herself clearly and not compare herself to what she saw as Lana's perfection. Ben was adorable and I loved his sister. I thought Alexa was a little over-the-top, but this was a great, funny, clean read. And the setting (The Philippines) was fascinating for me, since I usually read romance books from an American perspective.
