Alyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.

Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.

The Biscuit picture books were a hit with my little ones but the incredibly simplistic stories (in which literally half the words are WOOF WOOF) drove me nuts. These 5 minute stories go a little more in-depth — my four year old still enjoys them and I find them pleasanter to read aloud.

This was interesting because it says it's "12 Classic Stories" that share their titles with the Biscuit beginning reader books, but the text has completely changed. The originals have very restricted vocabulary (and it seems like half the words are "Woof"), while the text here has been elaborated into the full vocabulary typical of picture books meant to be read to children.
My under-3 daughter likes Biscuit, and I prefer this to the originals because I have a bunch of beginner books for her that I think are better.

Biscuit is adorable. The stories are really well-illustrated with a good text to picture ratio. I love that Biscuit says, "Woof woof" and his best friend Puddles says, "Bow wow." My kindergartener thinks all of Biscuit's adventures (like getting into the bird seed and chasing balls) are extremely adorable.
