Title: The List Author: Michael Grist Series: Zombie Ocean Book # in Series: 5 Mr. Grist has written a zombie series like no other. While many authors have chosen to break away from the simpler blood, guts and violence narratives of earlier zombocalyptic novels, and instead focus on a set of characters and their emotional change and growth as they strive to survive, hour by hour, minute by minute - Grist approaches things from a completely different perspective. What if a worldwide conspiracy was checking things out - a test case virus that would effect a small number of people, but do nothing to almost everyone else on the planet. The key people would be those in a coma. After they woke, the world was destined to change in a big way, but not until two particular survivors reacted to each other - then the virus was released across the world their new environment (zombies), and travelled, trying to find others who survived. One of the primary changes is that the zombies are not trying to kill the survivors and eat their brains. Yes, the zombies do have all the cannibal tendencies we've all come to know and love. BUT, the zombies are attracted to the survivors, like a compass needle to True North. You can imagine, for people who were raised on a steady diet of Night of the Living Dead and the whole zombie cannon of films and TV, like AMC's, The Walking Dead, that this would have been a bit threatening at first, as hordes of zombies just wanted to get, in the words of the Carpenter's, Closer to You. So there were outbreaks of zombie massacre around each survivor, some in very large numbers, before the zombie love ocean was discovered. After that, you could even travel with your personal horde / zombie ocean, as a very large and unattractive bodyguard force, protecting you from the dangers of the world. Chillin' with the horde was new and weird. In book 5, Mr. Grist has had many adventures with his characters since discovering the zombie ocean and taking them out to play. Amo, the last Mayor in America, zombie comicbook artist and all around good guy is leading a community in Southern California they call New L. A. Anna has become sheriff at the tender age of 16. She is also a pilot, a warrior and their genetic scientist. Lara is the woman who kicked everything off with Amo back in NYC, and she's a beautiful lawyer as well.. Cerulean is only a memory, but he was hands down my favorite character. He gets a few cameos in this book, which was great. Jake is their tech wizard. After the plane crash, his personality is sweet, but outside of technology, his thinking is much simpler. He's still wonderful. Peters plays the wise old man of the group, but he's not that old, he's just been hurt too deeply. Great character. Out of all the characters, this is Anna's book. While Anna's journeys, battles and actions in Europe and Africa with the Ocean, the demons, the bunkers, the conspirators and the science is compared in the book itself to the Iliad and the Odyssey: Odysseus's journey's, battle's, dealings with the dead and then home again - I almost see it more like the myth of Ishtar's descent into the Underworld. Her fight to get into the Underworld, her threat to bring the dead back up, so that they outnumber the living. Her entry. the stripping, the viruses, her resurrection and return to life. There are so many parallels between Anna's story and Ishtar's. I can't go into details, but once you read the series, you'll see. Below is part of Ishtar's threats at the Gate of the Underworld.
"If thou openest not the gate to let me enter, I will break the door, I will wrench the lock, I will smash the door-posts, I will force the doors. I will bring up the dead to eat the living. And the dead will outnumber the living."
What better way to describe Anna through a majority of the book. I cannot say much more without giving away the plot and huge spoilers which I won't do, so here are some things I can say. Grist flashes back to some of the previous books in the series to illustrate the weight of stress and responsibility necessary for leading a community in this new world. A new character brings hope to the plan of wiping out the eleven demons threatening the survival of humanity, as well as the underground bunkers full of scientists, technicians and doctors without immunity who were involved in the conspiracy. This is an all or nothing adventure, with New L.A.'s survival riding on the complete success of this mission. When hope gets thrown in the middle of their planning, for Anna it feels too much like a pipedream, after all, she never knew the world that everyone misses so much. To her, survival is still goal one, and she is leading the mission, so she lays down the law. You know what they about the best laid plans. Excellent, human characters, strong narrative, riveting imagery, painful emotional changes and growth. At times, surviving in a post apocalyptic world is worse than simply dying. That message comes through loud and clear. Things get ugly, and you are forced to do ugly things that you will have to live with for the rest of your life. The book I'd not all doom and gloom. Many good things occur. All I can say is Read the Series! I know it's a cliche all by itself, but this one is different from the zombie hordes of series out there. Highly Recommended!
Ahhhhhhhh!!!! This is me screaming at the fact this book was too good to put down and still it took me days and days to read cuz Caronavirus BS has me homeschooling and too busy to read properly!!! 🥴🤯😲 Okay, rant over. First the good: WHERE OH WHERE DID THIS AUTHOR COME UP WITH THESE IDEAS??? HOW??? WHAT!?!?!? I mean, zombie stories are as old as time and never, NEVER, have I seen this kinda switch up. I thought vampires that glitter was something new. Um, no. Grist has Meyer beat on rewriting an old myth. In addition to building up an overdone topic to absolute greatness, there are the characters. Every single one has a unique voice. Every single one is real and raw and so well written I feel like im bouncing in my armored humvee thru rotting vineyards right next to them. I bled when they bled. I cried when they cried. I panicked when I thought I'd lost one. I mourned when I did. The bad: a few typos. Nothing major. Possibly the heart attack i nearly had when I thought my favorite character was about done for. 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Well I really loved reading these books and they didn't disappoint me at all. Though I'm,a little gutted that he story seems over now. I would definitely recommend these books.

The List by Michael John Grist is now available! This is the fifth book in his Zombie Ocean series starting with The Last, and it's possibly The Best!
This book really drives the characters forward, facing their greatest fears head-on as they leaving loved ones behind, stepping into a fight for their survival.
I love the care Grist puts into little details, bringing the characters to life in the real world, with great subtle foreshadowing! I notice more little details on my second reading.
As applies to all Grist's novels, the characters are relatable, lovable, and mortal! I really want to shout at them to do the right thing or in some cases not do the wrong thing!
One or two scenes had me woozy with the gore. Real blood and real face-to-face fights for life.
And then there's the character arcs, and the plot surprises! I bet you didn't see _(spoiler redacted)_ coming! Or what about _(spoiler redacted)_? Can you believe it?
This book will stand on its own, but you really should pick up the whole series; more books are coming and I can hardly wait!
Full disclosure; I received an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I've been part of the advanced readers squad for all 5 of these books and I really feel quite lucky to have had the opportunity. I feel like over the past two years I have really got to know and understand MJG's writing style. He's a dynamic story teller who has a fantastic ability to paint images with words, coupled with action, excitement and humour.
This is another great chapter to the story. The survivors' world just grows and grows, from New York to New L.A., previously crossing the Pacific to Asia and this time
I honestly felt that, at times the book zoomed by a little too quickly. I would describe it as the literary equivalent of a montage, but I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure! I cant wait to see where we go next!
I was so excited to receive this book and it really didn't disappoint, in fact it was a perfect ending to the series, if indeed it is (I hope not). I devoured this story and found it impossible to put down until I was forced to for sleep, only to wake and immediately go back to reading. The action is outstanding, with masses of tension and emotion threaded throughout. The characters are incredibly real and I loved getting to know them more in each book. My favourite thing about this book is that Anna becomes the woman that I always felt was there inside that hard exterior. It is wonderful to watch a character grow over so many years, very unusual and special. I was enthralled from beginning to end and will miss the Ocean. I'll bought this book as soon as it came out, as I have with every one of them. Would I recommend this book? Yes, without a shadow of a doubt because it's not just a zombie book, it's about human endurance and the true power of family and love. *I received this book as an ARC but still bought a copy, my opinions are my own.*
It is crucial that one read the Zombie Ocean series in order. Each book stands on the shoulders of the previous one. The again, reading all of the series is a reward in itself. Others have said it, but it needs repeating: Michael John Grist’s “zombies” are unlike those of any other novelist or movie director. The role played by the zombies involves saving the world, not bringing destruction. You just have to read it to believe it. Mr. Grist gives you a setting consisting of “the immune”, the infected, the government conspiracy(s), and red-skinned demons. And it all seems logical. Human emotions are rendered beautifully; they will touch you and affect you. Battle scenes will terrify you, and the heroes don’t always survive, but the human spirit is respected and affirmed. Life is good, as well, for the reader, as there are, to this date, a total of eight volumes in the series.
Another great addition to the series. Shows growth in the characters maturity. Really good suspense and drama. Can't wait to read the next story in this series. Really want to know what else is going to happen to the characters. The interactions between the characters and situations are very involving and intense. It made me laugh and cry and really touched me. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in reading zombie apocalypse style stories.
Another excellent instalment in the zombie ocean series. This time it focuses on Anna and her struggles with the events of the last book. If you have read the others read this one too. You won't be disappointed. If you haven't read the other four yet you should. You won't regret it. As always many thanks to the author for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review
I have read the entire series, and enjoyed every little minute. Book 6 did Not disappoint. Highly recommend if you want an interesting and thought provoking new angle on the zombie Apr.
