A new menace rises to threaten the fragile order the Wonders struggle to maintain. Emboldened by Green Lantern’s loss of power, the Ultrahumanite emerges from the shadows with an army of super-powered slaves. His goal is nothing less than reforming Earth-2 in his vision, utilizing the Amazonian technology that Fury had hoped to use to rebuild a better world.

The Wonders try to regroup in the aftermath of the Humanites’ attack, but the debate still rages over using the Pandora Casket to recreate the old world. The Ultrahumanite refuses to back down and while placing all of Neotropolis under siege, manages to turn the most powerful Wonder against the others!

The tension in this story is tightening more and more with each page. From the moralistic debate over the Pandora Casket, to lives hanging by a thread, to the ultimate battles against the Ultrahumanite and his genetically modified forces each page is wrapped in urgency. Abnett does a great job just ratcheting up emotions for the reader with every page. Just when you think there may be something to take it down, he maneuvers the story to keep tightening it’s grip! Good stuff!

Tony Harris’s pencils on the first several pages were a bit jarring because it’s so different from what we’ve seen in this book up to now. The ink is also a bit heavy and that makes things look a bit blocky and disfigured. We’re thrown again when the art changes to von Grawbadger and it’s more like what we’ve seen in previous issues. I question the decision to use two such very different artists in one issue. I think it actually harmed the early phase of the story because the art is so conspicuous.

Overall, still an excellent issue in an exciting storyline.
