Nikki Anderson meets Griffin O'Connor on a blustery fall day in New York and her quiet life as an underpaid barista is shattered. After narrowly escaping from a vicious pack of fledgling vampires, Nikki takes refuge with Griffin and his cadre of gun-toting, knife-throwing cohorts. On the other side of the city, a power-thirsty vampire Alpha named Nicholas Bradley is ruthlessly and systematically expanding his territorial claim of the five boroughs. Unaware his sire, the 953 year old Alexander Rex, is attempting to stage a bloodless coup in a society where blood is the currency. As both sides continue to clash, it becomes apparent Nikki may be a savior for the Hunters and a firebrand destroyer for the vampires, each group desiring to wield her gifts to turn the tide of war in their favor.

Children of Lilith is a breath of fresh air in a world filled with mediocre vampire fiction. These vampires are SCARY. No sparkles to be found here. Just blood and fangs and lots of violence.
And the humans who fight them? Badass, well-thought out characters who are relatable and lovable. I can't get enough of Boz. He'd better be in ALL the sequels or I'll riot.
Nikki is the female lead YA readers need. She is strong and resilient while still allowed to be feminine. You can have both, y'all. She is a fantastic character that will inspire readers.
I can't rave enough about Children of Lilith. I'm excited to see where the author will take this world in the sequels. Go grab a big mug of coffee and curl up with this book.
The action picks up quickly and continues on at a decent pace throughout. It felt fairly well-plotted and researched. The two leads have chemistry. Nikki's spunk and wit mesh well with Griffin's world-weariness and tough guy attitude. The dialogue is snappy, the character interactions work, and so does the majority of the humor. Even winks at itself early on with a Stephenie Meyer joke. (Thankfully this isn't that kind of vampire book.)
Boz. Just Boz in general, all Boz all the time. I love funny guys and nerds and Boz is the best of both.
Good world-building, like the tattoos (I don't wanna spoil stuff.) I loved the scene where all the hunters meet at Onyx.
Stephen King says in On Writing that people love to read about work. I'd add to this: people love to read about food. This book has both. It made me want coffee, booze, and Chinese takeout by the time I was done reading it. These people drank so much coffee I LOVED IT. Something about the scenes with coffee/internet research reminded me of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Last but not least, there are several delightfully evil villains, all of whose scenes I had fun reading.
Some things that might have needed improvement:
The same complaint I have for a lot of small press and indie ebooks I've read: Numerous typos. It needed a more thorough editor.
I felt this book had so much potential but things got a little tangled halfway through (and with so many POVs it can get confusing). Plus a deus ex machina happened and I'm not a fan of those, but I also don't read a lot in this genre.
Criticisms aside, I recommend this and enjoyed reading it. Would read a sequel.
I have to admit I did not think a new take on the Vamp genre could be done but here it is! Creative and fast paced this one grabbed me from the first page. I sharpened my fangs on Anne Rice and the classics so the complexity of the Supe element was a pleasant surprise. The introduction of Gabriel and Michael gave it that Ricean feel but with a more contemporary, hip angle. Loved the humorous banter between the Hunters and how can you not love the deliciously evil Bradley just a teeny bit! I hope we get to delve deeper into Nikki and Griffin's psyche in the sequel! Definitely want more of Boz, the lady killing geek! I highly recommend this author to fans of Laurel K. Hamilton, Karen Marie Moning, and Charlain Harris. Well Done!
You remember when you had your first orgasm? There was all this talk about it and you worried would it live up to the expectations? How long would it take to get there? Is it realllllly worth it? And then it happens, and it's mind blowing and you can't believe the way you feel - euphoric, light, satisfied. And then there's a little voice in the back of your head wondering - what happens next? Can we do this again? Will it be as awesome?
That's this book. A first orgasm. While you're satisfied with how it turned out - you kind of wonder about where it's going next.....
Kudos to Ms. Devora on her first book - thanks for the good read, now when can I have another? And please, please, please give Boz a bigger part (no pun intended). While Griffin is the hero - Boz is the hero in my heart.
4.5 Stars for this humorous, emotional, and action-packed vampire hunter story!
As a longtime lover of vampire novels, from reading the likes of Bram Stoker and Anne Rice as a teen to the more recent and often-ridiculed Twilight novels, I typically approach books about vampires with heavy skepticism. This book, however, I enjoyed immensely from start to finish.
The synopsis for this one covers quite a lot of the plot, so I won’t rehash that here. What it doesn’t cover is the incredible storytelling ability of the author. Devora seamlessly weaves various vampire lore, humor, emotion, and action in a riveting tale that doesn’t disappoint. It’s the relatable, flawed characters and the excellent flow between action and reaction that keeps you turning pages.
Given the voluminous vampire lore in existence, I was likewise highly impressed at the generally clever choices of which to use. Devora integrates the aspects that made sense in context of the story and where the plot ultimately went, along with her own, unique additions that make this a rich and intriguing read.
In fact, I was on pins and needles almost the whole time, devouring this lengthy book in less than two days. The characters’ fate gripped me, the villains enthralled me, and I had to know what their fate would be. I feared for the worst, since in the bloody world of vampires and those who hunt them there isn’t always a happy ending. With blood, violence, and a whole lot of satisfying action, I was ultimately left extremely pleased with the ending, and looking forward to finding out what happens next!
The Vampire genre is tired, right? I mean, it’s been done...and done. However, Children of Lilith burns the genre to ash and, like a Phoenix, a fresh take rises. It’s full of wonderfully rounded characters, whom you’ll root for. You have two characters with a little of “will they? Won’t they?” There’s the lovable, witty Boz, sure to be a reader favorite, and some delicious villains. And the ending? Whew! It will wear you out! If you’ve ever loved vampires, read it. If you can’t get enough of strong, female protagonists, read it. If you want a page turner that will keep you up at night, read it. Can’t recommend it enough.
This story has all the over-the-top angst as a teen vampire drama, only there's even more blood and fight scenes. It's definitely a guilty-pleasure type vibe. Griffin may be a SadBoi (TM) but the romance is delectable. If you're the kind of person that loves urban paranormal romance, then you're gonna love this one.
It is not easy to tell a story of vampires and make it original, but Lauren Devora does an excellent job of bringing back the hardcore vicious style that made vampires some of the greatest monsters in literary history. The main Hunters who spend the majority of the novel protecting a target of the vampires are strong protagonists as is Nikki, the Luminari who struggled to find her powers. I am intrigued to read the next book in the series.
Children of Lilith is like no other vampire novel I’ve ever read. It goes deep into interesting lore and history within their world and I was captivated right from the start. Every character is interesting and complex and there’s a depth here I often find lacking with this genre of fiction. I can’t wait to read the next one!
Reads like a movie. Strong talent author shows with dialogue and unique storyline. Characters are so developed you feel like they really exist. I fell in love with Box and James and even loved the depth of perverseness with all the villains.
