Andreia gomes is a self-taught weaver, compulsive maker, and interior designer. Her interest in textile arts and artisanal production methods lead her to learn the art of weaving a few years ago. She is also passionate about teaching and sharing her enthusiasm with the growing weaving community. Her work has been featured in Etsy, CYL Collective, Makers Movement, Koel Magazine, Future Positive, IKEA, and more. In 2014, she created her own brand of handwoven wall art, LOOP Weaving Co. Andreia’s work reflects her love for color, texture and natural fibers, resulting in unique wall art with both geometric and organic designs. Her art lives now in homes and stores around the world.
I have just received this book as a reward from the Goodreads giveaway and I am excited!
Andreia Gomes has created a wonderful resource for a beginning weaver. In the introduction she describes her inspiration and process for becoming an artisan in the craft of weaving. She states " This book is meant for everyone who wants to learn the fascinating art of weaving in a simple, fun, and modern way." This book accomplishes her goal.
As in any how to book, Andreia Gomes describes the materials, tools, and types of fibers you will be using. She then describes a variety of weaving techniques. Text is supported by clear photographs to 'demonstrate' the process. The reader is shown how to warp the loom, create a tabby weave, and then a variety of techniques to create different artistic results for weaving. The book continues with descriptions for a variety of projects. Each project begins with author comments about the project, lists needed materials, project size, difficulty level, and instructions supported by wonderful visuals.
The variety of projects contained in this book will support the interests of many beginning weavers. Andreia Gomes shares instructions for wall hangings, woven jewelry, and household decor items. I am inspired by the variety of looms she has included- one rectangular loom self-made, purchased looms, looms created by items found in nature- tree branches and driftwood board, and a circular loom. Creating with a variety of looms and a variety of fibers opens the field wide for artistic expression and creation.
This book is an excellent resource for someone interested in learning how to create craft using little loom weaving.
I recently purchased a loom to make use of all the little odds and ends I have leftover from various knitting projects. I decided to check out books that were available at my local library to get a better grasp of the process, having known some of the basics like warp and weft but not as closely as I know knits & purls.
This book is nice and light, covering the very basics and introducing techniques from the simplest to ones requiring different ways of manipulating the yarn. It also covers how to make a loom if splurging for a professionally-made one is out of budget. I'd say though, that the book focused more on only a few techniques and several projects, and less on more advanced techniques or ways to make it more varied or intermediate. It's a good beginner book, but I look forward to seeing what else is out there
This is a cute and practical book that serves as a great introduction to weaving for all skill levels. The detailed instructions, accompanied by clear images, make it easy to follow along. I particularly appreciated the variety of projects beyond the usual wall hangings, such as bracelets and keychains, and the first project guiding you to make your own loom was a nice touch. Overall, it's an enjoyable read for anyone looking to explore weaving.
I found this to be a perfect book for those interested in starting a new craft. It has clear instructions for creating cute stuff, like the hanging planter.
A good little resource for beginners to weaving, with plenty of guidance, including on minimising the dreaded draw in, something I always struggle with! I appreciated that the projects were more varied than just rectangular wall hangings and was glad to see the relatively simple and affordable instructions for creating your own loom included; having to pay out for new equipment can be a substantial barrier to picking up a new hobby.
There is nice photography of “stuff,l which is all that is offered in this book. While the first three chapters are decent, very basic information about looms, threads, and techniques, the projects aren’t worth the effort and materials to make them.
Lots of pictures and step-by-step instructions for basic projects, but by far the most "adorable" project (and the one I'd most like to try) is the circular wall hanging.
A quick read. The descriptions of the techniques were helpful (minus the occasional description that says “right” but picture showing “left” or vice versa). Most of the projects were not to my taste.
