Major Jackie Holmes is a career soldier with nearly twenty-one years of service under her. Returning home from Afghanistan injured makes her evaluate her life. After her husband’s strange behaviour, she realises the only people in her life she can count on to help with her recovery are her twins, her parents, and all the medical teams she finds herself surrounded with. Could a chance encounter with an old school friend turn her life around? As a physiotherapist at a military rehabilitation centre, Carrie Spencer treats all kinds of people and injuries. She just didn’t ever consider running into an old school friend, and end up treating her. In the midst of an abusive relationship, Carrie is struggling to decide how she needs to act to safeguard herself and her boys, Charlie and Richard. Jackie is her bright light in a dark place, and Carrie begins to rely on her friend more and more as she comes to terms with what she must do. Everything comes to a head at a party held at Jackie’s house…the only question is—Will Carrie do the right thing and turn her back on her relationship, or will she follow her lover and suffer more of her abuse? When a friendship turns to more and two hearts beat as one, is it possible for that bond to be torn apart?
Ronni Meyrick was born in Brighton, but now lives in rural Oxfordshire with her wife Kay, and black cat Sheba. She’s been an avid reader since a young age, and could always be found with her head in a book. Ronni Meyrick is her pen name.
Jackie struggles to accept the changes in her life following her injury sustained in Afghanistan. Her rehab therapist, Carrie is the positive she needs to speed her rehabilitation. Carrie has her own struggles on the home front which threaten their friendship and growing attraction.
I enjoyed getting to know these two women who meet when both are coming to terms with unhappy relationships and physical challenges. The secondary characters are black and white and fall into good guy/ extremely bad guy roles but I still enjoyed watching the action as it developed. Jackie’s husband and Carrie’s partner Toni are both rotten enough it’s not hard for the reader to hope Jackie and Carrie find their way somehow towards a life together. The four teens involved add to their need to find stable relationships. Nicely done.
Jackie has an incredible strength and willpower. This is a battle unknown for her but she takes on the fight. She must use her inner power to overcome many obstacles. She has paid a high price for serving her country and Jackie faces months of therapy to remain full use of her whole body so that she can get back to her own old life. The distress and turbulent emotions that goes along with trying to gain control over her life is so well described. It did feel as if it was my own struggle. A gorgeous blond with pale blue eyes helps her to stay on the right path. The compassion and friendship is the beginning of so much more. But before something beautiful could flourish they need to close a significant part of their lives. Dave and Toni bring her to the edge of her patience. Their actions screws everything up and they are both enormous jerks. The main characters are irresistible and both unique in their own. The scene in the morning in the kitchen with the kids was so heartwarming and full of love. It brought a big smile on my face. The author created a beautiful story, a story with heartbreak, drama, passion and profound love. It was sizzling, captivating and with emotional intensity. Love and faith can get you through even the worst of times. I hated to see this novel end and I'm definitely going to re-read it very soon. This book is highly recommended.
I came across this book via the Lesbian Fiction Military (F/F) list. The premise of the book grabbed my attention and that's the only thing I liked about the book. The characters were like caricature characters and I couldn't take the story seriously, it was just so over the top and cheesy. I'm happy I didn't buy the second book.
SO Sweet Hero is a timeless romance between two women struggling to find peace in their lives, seeking solace and strength with each other. Jackie has come home from the war injured, her life forever changed. She has to be in the rehab hospital for weeks on end. Her teenage children come to visit often but her husband is aloof and distant, uninterested and absent. Jackie's physio therapist, Carrie, is someone she knew as a child. Carrie is sweet and attentive and caring. Her visits soon becomes the highlight of Jackie's day. The two of them come to lean on each other as they confront heartaches and celebrate milestones. As the time passes, their friendship is slowly turning into something more....
Hero is such a sweet romance! I absolutely adore Jackie and Carrie. I like that they are older and more mature women. They are so sweet and loving and accepting but they are also strong in fighting for what they need out of life and together they find it. They are lifelike in that they both have children and spouses and careers. They know what life is about and what they want. I enjoyed watching their friendship grow and turn into more and I like the strength each woman possesses as they overcome their circumstances. Some of Jackie's struggles are a bit simplistic, and kids are all a bit too well behaved and but hey, this is a romance novel and they are allowed to be shiny and sweet. (Im sure its a rule!) All in all this was a really good book that will give you a case of the Awwww's. Well done Ms. Meyrick
I've read this author's first book and enjoyed it well I like this one as well. I enjoyed the two main character and even like the children as well. The only problem I have is what happen to the husband and the ex crazy girlfriend. She burn down the house and pleads insane there is nothing more. I also felt the ending was rush as well. Overall I would give it 4.5 rating and would recommend this

This is yet another book in the lesbian military fiction group. And I loved it. It seems I never tire of reading about these strong, wounded women who persevere and find their HEA's in spite of adversity. And of course, there's a cliffhanger at the end. How does one get rid of those psychotic ex-girlfriends anyway?
I’ve liked it a lot. I can even say I loved it. It’s very well writen, with a bit of humour and a few erotical passages, the situation is realistic . I also loved it because it’s good to read, time to time, some novels where the characters are not physicaly perfect (Jackie, the main character is a major in the British Army and she lost her left leg in Afghanistan). Yeah… I remind that nobody’s body is totaly perfect … The beauty and the « physical perfection » are always different due to the eyes which watch and they are not what the people are … The best way to Love someone is to watch a bit outside but also deeply indise the other person, to understand her heart, her mind and her soul .. « Hero » is in he same time an ode to all the veterans (from every countries I think) and a good lesson of courage (for a few things, it reminds me the story of « Men of Honor » and Carl Brashear’s battle to stay in the US navy after he was injured in duty … ) when you must struggle to put your life back on the rails after an injury but also after betrayals.
If you don’t know Ronni Meyrick's work I recommand you her excellent novel.
This was a very good book dealing with the after effects of war and injuries and PTSD and TBI injuries and how the veterans have to deal with family members in relation to said injuries.
Jackie and Carrie were very believable characters as were Dave and Toni (regardless of how awful Hesse two characters we)!!! At the end, I just felt that the whole issue with Toni was left a bit unfinished and was hoping that perhaps there will be a sequel that will deal with said issues.
Regardless, it was a very good book and I enjoyed it very much!
This story was truly beautiful. It was light hearted and a very quick read. I read through this story in 2 hours because it was just that good. While it wrapped everything up I would love to read more stories with these characters in it. I am in love with the characters in this book.
I was excited about this book coming out and was not disappointed. Being a disabled vet myself I could relate to the storyline. Thank you for a great ride and I recommend this book.
A great story with lovely characters and respectful for the sacrifices of those protecting our countries. Being a Veteran, I appreciate the awareness this story brings about the difficulties faced by wounded warriors. It is fiction, so I am glad it focused on the wlw relationship and not on the crazy that happens when trying to return to a normal life after war.
A soldier returns to recover health & home & love & life
A soldier returns to begin the struggle to recover love & life as well as function & family; with the assistance of a physical therapist struggling with abuse & attraction.
The misfortune of the one and the suffering of the other will bring closer these two charming, sweet and tender women together! Jackie, the hero of a war in Afghanistan, hospitalized and abandoned by his husband will fall under the charm and beauty of Carrie, physiotherapist; this one, mistreated by her girlfriend, will let himself be seduced by the strength, the goodness and the courage of her patient. A beautiful love between two beautiful people that will give them enough strength to rebuild their lives and soothe their ailments.
I absolutely LOVED Hero!!!! The best lesbian romance I have ever read!!!!
Major Jackie Holmes is the epitome of the word Hero! She protects with her total self, whether it is the soldiers in her brigade, or her family and friends back home. She stands for all that is good in this world but she is also a prime example of how things can go really bad in an instant. She has had some seriously bad cards dealt to her recently but she is also the epitome of perseverance. She is the person who picks themselves up after tragedy strikes, dusts herself off, evaluates the situation and puts a new plan in place. It is what has made her an amazing leader and how she has risen to her rank that she rightfully deserved. Carrie Spencer tries to remember where she knows the beautiful woman who was just wheeled past her at the rehabilitation center that she is a physiotherapist at. “Hero” is story of how these two women forge a friendship and support each other through bad relationships and the difficult times that follow.
There was only one love scene in “Hero” but it was done so tastefully and was just enough. And there was only basically one thing in the story that bothered me and that was how fast they rushed to say I love you when they finally admitted that they wanted each other. I know that “I love you” can just rush out in the throes of passion but it is just a pet peeve of mine. The other thing I would have liked to have known was what happened with Toni. That woman was one nasty and spiteful piece of work. I am in hopes that there might be sequel in the works to answer these questions and a few more.
I know that I typically review m/m books but I highly suggest that you consider trying this amazing f/f romance. Not only was it truly uplifting, how a person can rise above such a physical and emotional tragedy, but it it was heart warming to witness such love and devotion to the service of her country and to her family. The sacrifices that our men and women of the armed forces endure are truly inspirational. Can’t recommend this fantastic book enough!
