I’m so torn over my rating for this story. I kind of feel like I read two books in one – one I thoroughly enjoyed and one I decidedly did not. Let me try and explain.

I absolutely adored the first 75% of this story. It was all sweet and sappy, with a deliciously developing slow-burn romance between cattle baron millionaire, Lincoln Courtwright, and his sweet-as-pie administrative assistant, Jonah Hollis. I was in my element with this Cinderella-in-cowboy-boots story and I was excitedly gearing up to rate this quite generously.

Unfortunately, as some of these Dreamspun Desires stories are wont to do, there was some ridiculously off-putting melodrama towards the end which made me question all the enjoyment that came before.

I love a bit of drama and I love a bit of angst, but what I don’t like is when it comes across as silly and forced. Things between Linc and Jonah were going great, but due to a stupid misunderstanding/miscommunication that was easily avoidable, things went from 0 to 60 in the crazy-pants, OTT melodrama stakes, and I honestly just couldn’t believe what I was reading anymore.

The last portion silliness deterred my overall enjoyment a great deal, but I keep reminding myself that I loved 75% of the story and that there was way more good than bad going on here – a great deal more in fact.

I liked Bennett’s easy and fluent writing style and I’ll be honest and admit that I love the corny title to bits – even though it’s misleading and there is no fake-boyfriend trope in play here. I also really adored Jonah’s character (pre-stupid and unnecessary miscommunication); I found him endearingly sweet and wholesome, and although he was a bit of a twit at the end there, I’m glad he got his lovely HEA with his sexy cowboy boss. I loved Jonah’s friends, too, and if I had my way we’d be getting stories about Wes and Ford, as well as a story about established couple Sammy and Aiden.

There were clearly ups and downs to this reading experience for me, but ultimately I’m going to focus on the good aspects as best I can and think back on this one with fond memories.

It is me not the book! or maybe it is the book.

After reading so many books lately that don't have the typical, Crush on straight guy-date-kiss-sex-then the 70% miscommunication-Draaaaaaama LLaaaaama! I just couldn't continue anymore.

What can i say, i have been spoiled with books where MC's TALK! not jump into conclusions and literally ran off.

All i wanted was a sweet no drama little romance, too bad!

After I got over the fact that I was actually reading a book entitled "The Cattle Baron's Bogus Boyfriend", I was quite enjoying this. Jonah was pretty likeable and of course Linc was as perfect as you could imagine an environmentally-conscious and sexy cattle baron to be. But then, of course, there was the inevitable misunderstanding and Jonah's actions in relation thereto. All so incredibly stupid. Really. I honestly didn't care anymore by the time I got to the HEA.

“Darlin’, have mercy.”

Boy that was a totally unexpected tale. I like it, a lot. But whoa, that misunderstanding at the end was kind of out of this world…

Jonah, 24, is a business assistant in Dallas. His boss is Lincoln Courtwright, owner of the huge cattle ranch ‘Broken Spoke’ and of a gas and oil company. In short: He’s loaded.

Linc is a GREAT boss, treating his PA friendly and fair. Jonah is madly in love with his hot boss, but he spends a part of his office time picking out expensive presents for Linc’s high-maintenance girlfriend, who is constantly fed up with something, so Linc needs to console her with something shiny. And Jonah is great at selecting gifts the lady loves.

One day, Linc breaks up with her and invites Jonah to accompany him to a huge society event in Dallas. Jonah thinks it’s just to show Linc’s ex-girlfriend that he’s not moping without her, but Linc seems to treat the whole thing like a real date. And isn’t that just what Jonah ever dreamed of when he was lusting after his sexy boss?

Both Jonah and Linc are incredibly great characters. They’re down to earth, totally lovable and clearly meant for each other.

However, around the 75% mark, there is a misunderstanding that is absolutely ridiculous, but gets blown up out of proportion and left me shaking my head like crazy!

Speaking of immature and impulsive.

However, I was able to talk myself into chalking it up to Jonah being a very young guy who might (only *might*) fall into such a trap and show such behavior. Otherwise, my only advice would be smacking him up the head for his stupidity.

Still, I liked both guys very very much, so I definitely recommend their story.

Darum geht's:

3.5 stars, rounded up.

This was a fun read, but I had a couple of niggles with the way the females in this book were characterized.

But let's start at the beginning...

Jonah Hollis is a PA to super-gazillionaire millionaire cattle rancher Lincoln Courtwright and half in love/lust with his hot boss. Except bossman has a girlfriend and is presumably not gay, so Jonah has kept his lusty thoughts to himself.

Bossman however has a rather nasty break-up with his demanding, rude, obnoxious girlfriend, and seemingly out of spite, invites Jonah to THE BALL. The big one. The yearly Cattle Baron Ball.

So right there was my first niggle - the ex-girlfriend being a vapid bitch, whose only role was to be just that - vapid, obnoxious bitch/catalyst to get the plot going. But I moved on because this is Dreamspinner's version of the Harlequin romance, and it was sort of expected, right?

Either way, I really like Jonah. He was sassy, kind, unassuming, but also had some backbone, which came out to play later in the story. I liked him a lot.

Linc on the other hand - well, I suppose he grew on me. His motives weren't always clear, and I thought initially that his inviting Jonah to the ball was a "so there, bitch" move, instead of based on real interest in his PA. As the book progressed though, it became mostly clear that Linc's interest was real, and that Jonah was perhaps too blinded by fear to see it. Perhaps understandably so, but that fear and Jonah feeling out of place did play a role in the requisite "huge misunderstanding".

Add to that the wicked stepmother, whose homophobia screamed off the pages, and who is another female character in this book seemingly with her only purpose being that of resident bitch, and the niggles resurfaced.

Still, I did like the whole book quite a bit. It was a fun read, and the most fun was to be had when Jonah and Linc engaged in their banter, which becomes better and better as the book progresses. And I usually go into these types of books from this particular series with the expectation that things will be OTT, somewhat unrealistic, and yet lots of fun. In that, this book succeeded in droves.

If you like the Harlequin-like, sweeping, ooey-gooey romances with a fabulous HEA, this book is definitely one you should check out.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. The longing, the crush on his "straight" boss, it was all very Harlequine-esque.

However, it fell by the wayside a bit in the second half for me. I think I went into trope overload, with the big misunderstanding, which turned into a double big misunderstanding, followed by the oh too sweet, everything tied up in a big red bow happy ending, in about 5 minutes flat.

I couldn't get why, even after he learned Linc was bi, Jonah couldn't believe that Linc could possibly want him, and that it all had to be to save face with his bitchy ex. Linc's taking him out for nice lunches, had him out to his ranch, and it was just all far from bossman behavior, but Jonah refused to see it. And then, when they did finally get it together, the sex was hot, but way too sweet for my taste, and the was just way too sudden and Big Red Bow for my taste.

This book also suffered from what I call BFD- Bitchy Female Disease. Other than BFF Caylee, every female seen in this book suffers from some form of BFD. Linc's girlfriend suffers from the spoiled, rich, fit throwing BFD. Linc's stepmom suffered from meddling, we're too good for you BFD, and then Jonah's mom, might not have quite had full blown BFD, she had the beginnings of it, with her refusal to accept who Jonah really was.

This was cute, as are all the stories I've read in the Dreamspun Desires series.

The title, it’s misleading. I thought with it being a “Bogus Boyfriend” we would be getting the fake boyfriend trope that I really enjoy but that wasn’t the case.

Jonah is an administrative assistant to Lincoln, billionaire rancher, owner of the Broken Spoke Ranch who is ruggedly handsome, kind and ….. Jonah is smitten with his boss and goes above and beyond his job title – as most Administrative Assistants do – to make sure Lincoln is taken care of. The above and beyond seems to include dealing with Linc’s pushy AF girlfriend, Melissa who treats Jonah like crap but Jonah puts up with it because he will do whatever he can for Linc.

Well, one night when Jonah stays late for work, Linc decides they need to get their grub on and the men head out for dinner and begin to get to know one another. They have a few deals of going out for food and then Melissa breaks up with Linc and Linc seems totes okay with it. He invites Jonah out to the ranch and Jonah learns that his boss is not so straight but bisexual and then things start to happen.

I liked that Linc was pretty sly with his secret dating and not letting Jonah in on the fact. Jonah’s reaction to the first kiss was priceless and though I said I wouldn’t read passed my bedtime, that kiss threw my adulating out the window.

This was kinda like a slow burn romance with a side of unrequited love mixed with a retelling of Cinderella. It was a nice blend complete with Jonah’s friends in lieu of fairy godmothers to dress him proper and evil step mothers. It was super cute and super fluffy and really romantic. I get why Jonah let the world tell him Linc’s feelings and not trust his gut but the end was worth all of it.

Again. This series is a happy place for me to get lost when I just want to read a romance that makes me swoon and sigh.

The Cattle Baron's Bogus Boyfriend is a fun and sexy romance built on tropes that make me smile. If you like your romance with a built in twist on Cinderella with cowboys, dancing and declarations of true love… this is the book for you.

Jonah moved to Dallas to escape his little hometown gossip mill and lucked out by finding a great job and great friends with a great place to live. He loves his boss – literally – and loves his life. He knows his boss’ girlfriend is a (w)itch because she calls all the time and pesters him but he wishes his boss was single and gay.

When the evil girlfriend causes a ruckus, Linc (the boss) shocks the heck out of Jonah by inviting him to the ball as his date! At first he thinks it’s out of convenience but something tells him Linc is more than he seems.

When Linc and Jonah cross the line and become more than friends and co-workers, these questions remain: Is Linc only using Jonah? Can Jonah fit into Linc’s life?

**

So, you know right away to adjust your meter to “dreamy” and away from “realistic” when you open up one of these “Dreamspun Desires” books. Things are a little too easy for our friend Jonah, but that’s okay.

I loved, loved, loved how sweet he was and how perfect everyone involved in this story acted! It was like spun sugar – so, so sweet!

I thought the ball/preparatory dinner was romantic as all get out and just ooey gooey wonderfulness. (Sometimes you just want a make believe world where twu wuv wins dammit!)

My only (niggle really) little issue was the ending. I thought the drama surrounding the “big misunderstanding” did NOT need to include Jonah’s pregnant BFF… it just made things unnecessarily complicated and sort of strange. Yes – it was a fairytale ending for all people involved, but it felt a bit forced.

I love that these books are so well edited and the writing was excellent. This was really easy to fall into and immerse myself in happiness and I highly recommend it – especially if you need to put a smile on your face. ☺

Kudos to the author for recreating the perfect tropey Harlequin romance that I loved to read when I was a lot younger. It usually went like this: beautiful yet loyal and competent young girl worked as secretary to sexy, kind, super rich boss. Hot rich sexy boss man has a beautiful but bitchy girlfriend, and she is mean to our heroine. Sexy rich boss find out about mean girlfriend's true motives and dump her. He continues to woo our kind and competent heroine and they fall in love (though always implied but never declared). Boss man's evil stepmother wants him to marry mean girlfriend. She breaks up the budding relationship between sexy rich boss and beautiful heroine by telling one or both all sorts of filthy lies. Beautiful heroine believes the lies, realises the boss never said he loved her, and he couldn't love her, because he deserve so much better, etc... then acts TSTL and breaks it off with boss (This is also the point where I stopped reading, because the heroine usually did something so terribly stupid, that made me so angry I could not continue). Sexy rich boss man then saves the day, and they live happily ever after.

This book recreate that perfectly, just instead of a girl we have a handsome, loyal, competent personal assistant Jonah, and sexy rich handsome kind boss, Linc. I loved the way the author portrayed both MC's, and their chemistry and romance felt believable. Jonah is so levelheaded and competent, I couldn't believe his actions during his TSTL moments, but it is part of the trope of these romances and that is the only reason I did not remove a lot of stars.

So I would definitely recommend this book for all readers looking for a nice, no-surprises romance featuring sexy cowboys, delicious food, quirky secondary characters, and all the familiar tropes of a proper Harlequin Romance.

2.5 Lightweight texan Cinderella story. It was a nice, naive enjoyment until the ball although I often guessed how much better the story would have been if it was about Wes and not about Jonah. After their night together, though ... nope, too much soap opera for me, everything happened too fast and I wasn't able to believe the actions, decisions and changes anymore. Nevertheless I like to round it up for the cute sex scenes and the male secondary characters.

Darlin' ... friends don't let friends:

1. Write a completely fun light hearted romance for 75% and then double down (heck, slam it the way down) on angst, miscommunication and weird proposals in one crazed fell swoop.
2. Create a sexy beast of a character (Linc, I'm talking 'bout you) with little personality other than he fills out his jeans very well and seems to be a pretty nice guy.
3. Introduce a character's bisexuality in basically one line, as in "back in college, when he was still competing in the rodeo, he had buckle bunnies of both sexes coming on it him" and then never have either MC discuss it again.
4. Resolve every last issue in one gooey, sugar-filled cupcake of an epilogue.

3 stars - (4 stars for the first 75% of the book).

Yea! I’m loving these Dreamspun books so far and this one is no exception. This book is a classic boss/secretary with a crush trope with all the cowboy goodness thrown in as well.
Hot as hell millionaire boss? Check. “Country” boy leaving town for the big city? Check. Best friend dating a douche? Check. Harpy and narcissistic girlfriend? Check! Manipulative step-mother? Check. Crush on the boss? Check. Big misunderstanding/miscommunication? Check. Reconciliation that makes everything right with the world? Check.
But then we bring in the new twists. Jonah is Linc’s Admin. He’s going to college in the evenings and working in Dallas after leaving his family farm in his teeny tiny home town in Oklahoma – where they are not so supportive of the gay. He’s left his BF Caylee behind largely to alleviate problems that surfaced with her homophobic boyfriend. He’s been lucky enough to find some great roommates (Wes, Aidan and Sammy) and get a great job through a temp agency which brings him to Linc.
Linc Courtwright is a millionaire cattle rancher and also has a gas and oil leasing business on the side. He also has a demanding rodeo rider girlfriend, Melissa, who isn’t very nice to Jonah. Let this be a lesson – if your SO treats your AA like crap, RUN!!! Finally, Linc has had enough and a confrontation leads to a breakup and Melissa pretty much promises to get revenge.
Jonah and Linc are both embarrassed, but they work well together and Linc really appreciates Jonah’s hard work and wants to reward him. Jonah always goes above and beyond and he and Linc begin spending more and more time together. Jonah gets a raise and Linc invites him out to the ranch to see the operations that he’s always working on at the office in Dallas. This visit is the catalyst for a number of things – some serious and some comical. Wes is the best comic relief in this story and he deserves his own book for sure (hint, hint Ms. Bennett).
It turns out that Linc is not as straight as Jonah thought. When Jonah finds out that Linc is bi, he begins to hope that the relationship they are forging might be more than friends. When Linc invites him to the Cattle Baron’s Ball, Jonah is reluctant to accept. He’s truly not sure of Linc’s motives. There are some other required social engagements that Jonah is to attend as well and despite Heloise, Linc’s stepmother doing her best to belittle Jonah, he still manages to have a good time.
Then things begin to go south – waaaaay south. There are some manipulations, some avoidance and some complications that threaten Linc and Jonah’s fledgling romance. Luckily, this is a Dreamspun book, so all’s well that ends well 
This was such an enjoyable read. Even though I pretty much knew what was going to happen, the ride was so fun! That is the great thing about these tropes – while there are so many required elements, it’s the twists and turns between them that keep us reading. Jonah is of course adorable. His roommates are helpful and nosy. His boss is a “dreamboat” and a nice guy. His BFF Caylee is a sweetheart who is down on her luck. Linc’s stepmother is judgmental and a little bit mean, while Jonah’s folks haven’t kicked him out or anything – they just don’t understand. Melissa is a bit of a shrew which is why we root against her. But each character gets to have moments in this story and that’s what brings it all together to be so satisfying. Welcome back Nicki Bennett! I hope we get more fun stories from you – and I really really want Wes’s story in another book please. He’s an awesome character with the best t-shirt collection I’ve ever read.

What happens when a man with a crush on his boss ends up in what he believes to be a pretend relationship so the boss can show his high-maintenance ex-girlfriend he is over her? Assumptions, misunderstandings, and complications follow in this entertaining comedy of errors set in Dallas, Texas. This novel has all the required ingredients for a light drama firmly set in the world of cowboys: cattle, oil and gas, homophobic relatives, and a sweet best friend who makes some truly bad decisions.

Jonah is a dedicated administrative assistant with lots of initiative, organizational skills, and a hopeless crush on his boss. Jonah is a hard worker, and he knows nothing can ever come of his feelings because his boss, Linc, is straight. Except then Linc breaks up with his girlfriend, needs a date for the Cattle Baron’s Ball, and asks Jonah to go as his date. It would be a dream come true – if Jonah’s self-esteem weren’t too low to accept this as a possible beginning of a real relationship. His roommate and friends keep telling him to go for it, but Jonah is too afraid of failure for his own good.

Linc is a millionaire cattle rancher with lots of oil and gas under his land, and he knows what he wants. He doesn’t care what anyone else thinks – but Jonah has no idea how serious Linc is when he says that the opinion of Dallas high society doesn’t interest him. Instead of being open to see what happens, and despite considerable chemistry between them, Jonah won’t let himself believe the feelings are mutual and runs. What a mess!

If you like stories where assumptions almost spoil the happy ending, if a hesitant younger man and his self-confident boss strike you as an interesting pairing, and if you’re looking for a read that is full of cowboys, well-meaning friends, interfering family, and a series of almost-catastrophic misunderstandings, then you might like this novel.

Add a Star

I added a star on to this review because the Epilogue is such a hilarious mess that you cannot imagine it happening anywhere else except on this whacked out Texas ranch, nor to such twisted up characters as Jonah, Linc, Caylee, Ford, Wes, Sammy, Adrian and the dreaded Melissa and Eloise.

This is a somewhat laconically paced romance which focuses on Jonah Harris, a young gay man from a tiny town in Oklahoma who leaves home to try the more tolerant big city of Dallas across the border. Though told in the third person, this is his tale even though his boss, Linc Courtwright, who owns a huge ranch that needs Jonah to help manage paperwork for farming and oil and gas exploration, is the key to the tale. Author Bennett takes her time letting that key unlock Linc's real persona, which you suspect all along but wonder how it's going to be reconciled with the book's blurb about Linc's girlfriend Melissa.

There are some very gay and some very straight and some very in-between people and moments here that--except for one critical stretch toward the end--are really non-threatening to anyone else in the book nor to the reader. It's a gentle exploration of love developing, taking hold, and forging ahead with a certain Texan mindset tossed around for good measure.

My only regret is the cover. While it is a perfect depiction of Jonah, it cheats us about Linc, not only for his looks but also for a hint of his age--which is never mentioned in the book. I would think it's about thirty, but that's not as important as the fact that he is a man very sure of himself and his preferences and his decisions. He keeps bundled up until he's ready to sum everything up in a couple of sentences whenever it's needed. He's the central character in the book from that point of view, holds it together, and in the end, adds a star.

Note: This book was provided to me by the publisher through Hearts on Fire Reviews in exchange for an impartial review.

This is a delightful story, very reminiscent of the sweet romances featuring big, strong cowboys that I used to love to read when I was a teen.

Linc Courtwright is a very hot, very wealthy, very manly cowboy and executive director of a Texas ranching operation that not only exports beef but also taps in to the gas and oil reserves on the land. His new assistant, Jonah Hollis, is a cutie with a big-time crush on Linc. Of course, he’d never tell Linc that since he values his life, and Linc is obviously straight.

After Linc breaks up with his sexy, gorgeous girlfriend who looks like a model but is actually a rodeo star, he asks Jonah to accompany him to the Cattle Baron’s Ball, the annual charity event that he always attends. Jonah knows it’s just a sham—a ploy to make Melissa jealous and to keep face—because he overheard Linc talking with his ranch foreman about her and his invitation to the ball.

But what he doesn’t know is that Linc is bisexual, and apparently, it’s not a sham to him. Can Jonah overcome his shyness, and his ties to the parents who have never accepted that he might not marry? And what happens when his best friend, Caylee, needs him back in Oklahoma? The anger, angst, and confusion comes to a head when Linc confronts Jonah after tracking him down and results in a surprise, but happy, ending.

I recommend this one to all who might enjoy an MM romance featuring a good guy who gets his cowboy in time to ride off into the sunset together.

I entered my childhood and did not want to leave.

The first thing that drew me to the series was the cover.

SO reminiscent of my middle school days when the librarian pulled the Hardy Boys book from my hand and set a Mills & Boon one in it. "Trust me, this one is so much better," she said.

With a wink, she was gone and romance and HEA have been in my life ever since.

The Cattle Baron's Bogus Boyfriend was so saccharine, so right for the night that one sitting was all it took. There are several story lines I am already envisioning with secondary characters. The whole assistant falling for the multimillionaire boss, though written a million times; did not distract from the story, even if said MCs were male. I totally enjoyed the camaraderie between Jonah and Lincoln and their sweet love story. There was drama, back biting and that episode of Dynasty where... read the book...in fact, grab the series. You won't be disappointed.

A Joyfully Jay review.

I loved Jonah, but I didn’t love his impulsiveness. Every moment the morning after he and Linc attend the Cattle Baron’s Ball is a BIG MISTAKE, one that a man a bit older and wiser might have considered twice before making. That said, the book is so breezy, with such a light tone, that I swooned along for the ride. Jonah’s a sweet man, and Linc’s just a giant teddy bear. Their lovestory is sugar on a stick. I appreciated the tiny hints we received regarding Jonah’s sexual history, so it didn’t come as a total surprise when they finally reached the king-sized bed. Expect a lot of naïveté on Jonah’s part, and that was endearing, for me. I liked how Linc’s heart was just as big as his body—and how he didn’t even flinch about being a stand-up guy, and the hero of both Jonah, and Caylee, in the end. I wished for a LITTLE more loving, but that’s a small complaint. The secondary characters are all fun, and I truly dug the Cinder-Fella-esque vibe I got, with Jonah getting all gussied up for his big outings with Linc. It’s always fun to experience the excitement of big moments and new experiences, and this book is packed with both.

Linc is great. Once his bisexuality is revealed it’s just what is. I appreciated there was no back and forth about his attraction of girls versus guys. He’s bi and that’s that–and it’s Jonah he’s got his sights on. The slow build between these two as they went from boss/assistant to something closer to friends and on to lovers played out just like I like it–slow and steady which just makes the pay off all the more sweet.

Fluff and a lot of it. Its a very sweet story, mostly instant love and I still do not know why Linc suddenly decided to date and after so short a time to marry the guy. I certainly didn't feel the love or the attraction between them. The ending was rushed and really far fetched considering the behavior of Lincs stepmother just a few pages before. Sorry I don't buy it that she would go from a homophobic b*tch to this ooc loving person.

It started really well, and the pretend relationship/Cinderella trope was great. But then we got the final conflict aka The Big Mis, and it was honestly the stupidest thing I've ever seen in a romance. At least the HEA was cute again.

Kudos for actually, explicitly stating the MC is bi!
