The Sibling Archetype: The Psychology of Brothers and Sisters and the Meaning of Horizontality

Rate this book
Barcellos's groundbreaking study on the psychodynamics of brothers and sisters, published in Portuguese in 2009, has been revised and expanded for its English edition on the theme of horizontality by this leading Jungian analyst. The fundamental role of the Sibling archetype in structuring and establishing individual adult life is undeniable, yet still dismissed. Brothers and sisters are powerful figures in our lives as we build our mature relationship patterns. Psychology must follow the movement that has been detected in other arts and sciences: the current search for the paradigm of brotherhood and horizontality. The Sibling is the archetypal basis for constructing the Other, and for recreating an idea and a sense of community within the new orders of the contemporary world.

I really enjoyed this book. It relates to the fracturing of horizontal relationships (Sibling Archetype) as characterized by the feelings of isolation from oneself and the world and may explain current trends in authoritarianism and destruction of our environment. It cast a new light on the role of the sibling which was largely ignored by Freud and Jung. The sibling is the Other, familiar and yet separate. Even for those who have no siblings your horizontal relationships are your siblings. The author recounts various stories such as Cain and Abel that exemplify this fractured relationship and demonstrate a fractured state of self. When we recognize the whole world and the whole universe are our horizontal equals, then we can attain a healing of our soul.

This is relevant to my next book about the Father Archetype who’s vertical relationship to us is characterized by competition, jealousy, approval, rage and eros.

Barcellos scholarship is solid, his approachable voice is remarkable. This book shifted my understanding of my personal sibling relationships and has now informed my dissertation direction. Understated and succinct, this is a must read for all depth psychologists and a general audience who is familiar with a few Jungian basics on the shadow and the Other.
