Abigail Doyle Mystery #1

Deadly Resolutions

Rate this book
Abigail Doyle, a systems designer for factories and businesses who has also had occasion to act as a private detective, is one of an environmental group that discovers the body of Gen. Martin Thorne of the Corps of Engineers in an abandoned bunker on Rockaway Beach in New York's borough of Queens.

After antagonism flares between Doyle and homicide detective Margaret Standish and because the group's members are suspect, Doyle decides to investigate on her own. Also hired by the general's mother, Doyle finds the general has an unsavory reputation--shady business deals, using his influence to overturn environmental legislation, bullying junior officers, frequenting sordid gay bars.

When the general's wife is murdered, Doyle is once again a prime suspect. Meanwhile, she and Standish build a wary, grudging but mutually respectful relationship. Depicting a fast-moving, zestful New York, Ashwood-Collins has created a detective for our time--a hard-driving, high-flying woman in sure command of herself and her destiny.

Another Hannibal Public Library discard.

Published in 1989 it may seem dated because of the lack of technology (i.e., cell phones) to support the fiesty, intelligent female protagonist.

On the other hand it is fun to follow her natural detecting skills in solving the case.

Anna Ashwood Collins has created a private detective who is no nonsense, hard driving and in command of her destiny.

Easy read and just 212 pages. Since this was the authors first mystery in the series I was curious to find out how many more books she has written. Surprisingly only one and it wasn’t published until 2012. Hmmm...my curiosity continues to be peaked.

I was surprised by the identity of the murderers in this novel of corporate environmental greed and blackmail. I was also surprised that the blackmail was related to being gay until I saw that the book was published in 1994.

Published in 1989 and not well known, this book was a fun quick read that I picked up in a used bookstore! The fiction is blatant, making you say to yourself 'that could never ever happen' which makes it fun....and the writing style is easy.
