Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age (he doesn't remember why) and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered.

In 1982, hoping to find a way to draw monsters for a living, he moved to New York City and began working for Marvel Comics, first as a (very terrible) inker and then as an artist on comics like Rocket Raccoon, Alpha Flight and The Hulk. By the late 80s he had begun to develop his signature style (thin lines, clunky shapes and lots of black) and moved onto higher profile commercial projects like Cosmic Odyssey (1988) and Gotham by Gaslight (1989) for DC Comics, and the not-so-commercial Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (1990) for Marvel. In 1992, he drew the comic book adaptation of the film Bram Stoker's Dracula for Topps Comics.

In 1993, Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line (Seed of Destruction, 1994) was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, 13 Hellboy graphic novel collections (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films and two live-action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries.

Mike also created the award-winning comic book The Amazing Screw-on Head and has co-written two novels (Baltimore, or, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and Joe Golem and the Drowning City) with best-selling author Christopher Golden.

Mike worked (very briefly) with Francis Ford Coppola on his film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer on the Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and was visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He lives somewhere in Southern California with his wife, daughter, a lot of books and a cat.

Does it get any better than giants fighting leviathans? The Ogdru Jahad have returned and it looks like the end of the world. The leviathan is spitting out kaiju by the hundreds every hour. I like how this ties into Hellboy in Hell as the team also sets up the final "season" of BPRD. There's some pathos as well as some of our team goes out saving the world. Things will definitely not be the same.

My intention was to marathon through the BPRD series and eventually get caught up so I could start reading the new issues as they came out, adding the book to my regular pull list. Then they pulled a mind-scrambler on me and ended the damned book before I could do so. Hmph.

Anyway, here I am at the very end of the BPRD saga holding my stymied expectations, trying to muster my thoughts on the conclusion of a couple of hundred issues. I'll be honest; I found it a bit anticlimactic. I don't know exactly what I was expecting but... it wasn't this somewhat deus ex machina finale. I was expecting Abe to come back at the eleventh hour and play a crucial role. I was expecting Agent Johnson to play a role after they spent so long building him up.

Shit, I'll be completely honest; there was a small part of me that was expecting Hellboy himself to return from Hell and turn the tide.

All things considered, I'm a little disappointed after investing so much in this book. I do suspect that there may be an element of 'nothing-could-have-possibly-lived-up-to-my-expectations' syndrome here, though. Also, I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it at all; I did. There were a couple of moments that were as good as this book at its best.

I'm not sure if Dark Horse are intending on relaunching this book at some point, under a different name, but if they do... well, I'm not sure if I'll be along for the ride.

Sad feels.

World: Art is top notch and keeps the tone of the series. The world building is great because we get a crashing together of BPRD and Hellboy with the Hell and the Angel's, all fantastic. I love lore and myths and thus had it in spades. I also liked the tying in with the cosmic angle. Just great great world building.

Story: A sad melancholy arc but this series has been nothing but that and it's great. Seeing the stuff In Russia and then the stuff with Cate was good. I was wondering where we would go after that huge finish 2 arcs ago but clearly there is more misery in story for this world and I'm loving it all.

Characters: What can I say about Cate and Panya they are awesome and so are all the characters. We've been with them for over 100 issues now and they are all just simply fully formed characters that are awesome. I can't say anything else due to spoilers.

This series is great, if you're here you don't need my opinion you know what you're getting.

Onward to the next book!

The epic (quite literally in every sense of the word) conclusion to not just BPRD Hell on Earth, but the story of the Ogdru Jahad that began two decades ago with Hellboy Seed of Destruction. The creators of the Ogdru Jahad are set free from Hell and attempt to destroy their creation to undo their mistake. They end up failing however, and Johann Krauss kills them by using the power of the cosmos? Or something like that idk that part was kinda weird. Anyway Johann makes the ultimate sacrifice and ends ups saving the planet. All of the other Kaijus freeze in a Phantom Menace like fashion and the world appears to be set back to normal... however a new villain is set free! It’s that creepy girl in a jar that Iosif was holding onto. I hope the next series doesn’t drag on to much because I don’t really know where the story will go from here... Kate Corrigan, Johann Krauss, Iosif and Panya are all dead. The only superpowered agents left are Liz, Abe, Fenix and Howards. About only half of Hell on Earth was good, but thank god the last two volumes were good.

Oh man. I know not everybody was satisfied with this finale, but I personally thought it was perfect for the series. It was appropriately huge and all-encompassing, every character (except agent Howards) played a vital role, and every death felt earned and emotional. Of course, it didn't wrap absolutely everything up, but now we already know that BPRD continues in its next (and final) iteration called The Devil You Know, albeit without John Arcudi's brilliant touch. As it is, Cometh the Hour is a fantastic sendoff to a generally very strong cycle of stories as well as the definitive BPRD writer, and that's more than enough for me. Hell on Earth was a bumpy ride sometimes, but at the end of the day it was a really good one, and I can't wait to see what comes next for this series.

This just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger, to the point where the story kind of lost touch with the human characters who drove things and that we really cared about. This climactic volume is actually kind of anticlimactic when all is said and done. Don't know how you possibly follow up a story like this, but apparently Mignola has plans.

To really get the whole impact of this volume, you really need to have read the previous volumes. This has been building for years. Not a disappointment at all. Excellent.

Everything that lead to this point didn't disappoint. The B.P.R.D has been interesting and provided an epic canvas of characters and storytelling. I understand the series is far from over, but this felt like a fitting conclusion and that finale was a punch to the gut. I'm not one for spoilers so I will continue the trend here. Volume 15 delivered and when I opened the book I just knew this was going to not end well.

Why the 5?

The volumes have been building to this point and it ends with a glimmer of hope. There's another series after this and judging by the three volume arc, I suspect its more of an epilogue. I still have the Abe and Lobster series to read, so my Hellboy world hasn't vanished just yet. I realised I've been lauding Mignola with all the attention, but John Arcudi is a name that has escaped my praise. This series has been impressive, artistically as well as written. I've loved the world building and weird characters that have graced the pages. It's a real shame the Hellboy movies haven't been successful as there is a long canon of storylines waiting for a creative filmmaker to take the leap.

One of the problems with B.P.R.D. and especially Hell on Earth is that the world is so messed up and destroyed that what does the ending even look like? Well, fortunately, they found a pretty solid way to end what has been an uneven story with some emotional moments too. If this series continues on after this (which I think may or may not happen), there would certainly be a new status quo they could create which I think this series need. With that said, the art was strong as usual and the ending was satisfying which is all I could have asked for. I'd like to see this series go back in time or go in a different direction because Hell on Earth felt a little too samey to what has been done before and also a bit bloated with too many detours and several uninteresting new characters being introduced but even with that, it was still worth reading and a worthy entry into the Mignola-verse..

I don't know if this series could have ended any more unsatisfactorily. Shortly after the switch from BPRD to Hell on Earth I started losing interest in the characters as the story telling became more and more perfunctory and less inspired as it trudged on, but it did have enough moments to keep me going. I am going to have to recommend if anyone asks just don't bother with the Hell on Earth series, it diminishes how brilliant the series used to be when it was just BPRD.

I enjoyed the ending to BPRD: Hell on Earth despite the deus ex machina finale. There were some interesting references to the wider Mignolaverse and some cool surprises. My biggest problem is once again I that found the art by Laurence Campbell underwhelming and not really suitable, it's a shame to end this enjoyable series with him at the artistic helm.

And so the series comes to an end and as suspected the series (and the world) will never be the same again. Now I am not sure what books come after this series since I know that other characters (such as Abe and Hellboy) who have had their own series have worked along side or crossed over with the BPRD so I am sure that Mr Mignola is far from done in this playground.

But as for this installment - I think it provided a more than satisfying conclusion to the series and considering the number of installments I do not think there was a single fault or misstep.

So I will sign off this series for fear of dropping a spoiler or giving some hint as to what happened and what was left - but I will admit that for one of the larger story arcs this was worth every edition.

“How can you be surprised by anything at this point, Andrew’s? Haven’t you figured out by now that you can’t make sense of this world? Not anymore.”

Johann figures out his full abilities, Varvarra has other plans for hell on earth, the titans of the inferno rise up from hell, the Ogdru Jahad is finally defeated. Kate and Panya die in the destruction of the BPRD headquarters. Fenix and her dog live on but what’s the point of predicting the future now?

A story that has been building up for years (it seems) finally comes to an end with this issue, and what an end it is. Thank you John Arcudi for writing some of the most interesting characters around, characters that were so real they could have been your friend or a stranger saying those things we were all thinking. Once in a while there are a few real conversational gems out there that make you realize how good things are.

There's plenty of action. Liz and Johann doing their thing while the humans try their best to evacuate. Conventional missiles and Liz and Johann are able to destroy the small monsters, but not the big momma. Then an unexpected ally arrives from Hell. Yes. Varvara is back! With reinforcements, and not just any normal reinforcements, very interesting and powerful reinforcements. Will it work?

The conclusion is extremely bittersweet. This is the second time I've cried at a comic, the first being that TPB where Roger dies.

Johann's character arc has been phenomenal. I admit not liking him at times. He is the typical cold, unfeeling, stoic German who sometimes lapses into childish whining about how he's lost everyone, can't see, taste, or feel. Wants his body back. And yet can't die. His conversations with other characters (Abe, Ben) have the best philosophy, logic and pathos. Arguably the most complex character in all of the BPRD. Kudos Arcudi. Kudos.

Life goes on in the aftermath. I'm very satisfied with the entire Hell on Earth Arc. Really going to miss Arcudi. Never got to see the end of Howard's story. What happens next? Looking forward to the next series.

The end of the Hell on Earth saga, where the Ogdru Jahad, the ancients dragons of evil, come finally come back to Earth to remake the world in their own image. Since they’ve come, we’ve seen civilization fall apart, heroes and villains die in fantastic manners, and Hell itself overrun and destroyed with Satan’s throat slit by Hellboy himself. It’s the absolute Cthulhu event we’ve always wanted to see, but have never been treated to before. This volume wraps everything up by collecting issues 143-147.
It’s difficult to describe the action without spoilers, so SPOLIERS, the final remnants of the players come together to place doomsday apparatus in place - the last contingence operation in hopes of stopping the Ogdru Jahad, one of whom has now fully manifested on Earth and is busy transforming humanity into frog creatures and hatching thousands of monsters by the hour. After launching the remaining nuclear stockpile at the Dragon, the Russians let loose the Watchers, the first angels, thrown down for mating with human women and birthing the Ogdru Jahad. While Elizabeth Sherman and Johann, blow the monsters apart one by one, until the ultimate revelation falls upon Johan who has his mind transferred into the WWII Sledgehammer suit, causing him to act.
Some people have complained about the ending of the cycle, saying it’s almost a deus ex machina, but I must say that the hints about how the Dragon would be stopped was foreshadowed here and there, it isn’t the greatest AH-HA ending you might want. However the death toll in these issues, and adding up all the others in this series, is correspondingly high for an apocalyptic event. I was satisfied. But I have to say that only one of the Dragons has been destroyed, and much of their offspring are still about. So the show’s not over.

The big finale of a big B.P.R.D chapter. The ending didn't feel as epic in the context of the whole series but it gave me a satisfying conclusion. If you are a Hellboy fan you might enjoy this series with a caveat. This series has a different tone. It is much more serious and leaning towards horror than Hellboy. I really enjoyed some story twists and surprises which were very original. What I didn't like was some philosophical parts musing about future and human nature. I prefer when things are happing. Luckily the main B.P.R.D part is more action-driven. Abe Sapien series is more philosophical and I liked less. I also enjoyed a variety of characters. There are a lot of unusual people/creatures, not just heroes who can move fast and are strong. Namely, my favorites were agent Howards and Iosif Nichayko. Overall I recommend this series.

The end of the Hell on Earth saga and the end of writer John Arcudi on BPRD.
This was an odd arc (talking about all 15 volumes) Some great moments some small moments. It didn't feel like it built as well as Plague of Frogs.

Hell on Earth had a lot of threads that were just stories and not part of the over-arc, and it makes this thread feel scattered. Like Howard. I wish Howard was involved in this final volume, because I dig him a lot. But he wasn't! Neither was Abe or the recently developed Exorcist.

But it kept that huge world shattering feel it promised. Nothing will ever be normal in the world of BPRD. Lots of deaths. Some expected. Some not. There isn't really a comic today that feels as epic and sprawling as this one. I'll miss Arcudi's work on this title.

Thanks to my local library, I finally got caught up on B.P.R.D. and B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth in time to read the final volume as the individual issues came out. Wow, what a story! Now that I can look back and see what they were building towards, it makes me appreciate the quieter, character-focused sub-plots so much more. This final storyline would not have as much impact without that buildup. I'm really gonna miss John Arcudi writing B.P.R.D. but at least I can read more of his collaborations with James Harren in Rumble.

A giant monster begetting smaller monsters then that mother of all monsters fighting giant humans. Quite the monster fest with super powered humans laying waste to those smaller monsters. It's the end of the world as witnessed by the puny human race! The artwork by Campbell is quite good with a appropriate darkness and suitable layouts. There is a definite Kirby-esque feel to the ending of this story arc by Mignola and Arcudi. I found it pretty satisfying conclusion. Well worth being on the bookshelf to be savored again.

Hell on Earth comes to an end with the BPRD vs. the Ogdru Jahad, one of the seven great beings. Everything shrinks to insignificance as fresh kaiju spawn by the hour and a true god of the monsters treads upon a world that can not possibly seem to withstand this latest catastrophe. And yet, our heroes will sally forth, even though not all will survive. But rest assured, the exits we see here are as satisfying as they are heartbreaking. Note; this is Arcudi’s last volume, and he sends himself off with a flourish, indeed.

M'ha agradat el final d'aquest arc?
No ho sé.
El infierno en la Tierra se m'ha fet etern. He he. No, de debò. No calien tants volums per explicar aquesta història. No calia arribar fins aquí. El camí ha estat interminable. I suposo que per això, la resolució, et deixa una mica fred.
M'he quedat igual amb les morts de la majoria de personatges. Corrigan: pos vale. Nikaychiko: pos bueno. Panya: pos dacuerdo.

Man, what a finale.

I wont go into details but level of casualties is tremendous. Varvara strikes in a worst possible way and she does remain a mystery - considering no management down below, her actions against the dragon, what exactly is her goal? Johan finally, finally, confirmed his role as a true hero. His conversation with the previous Sledgehammer are moving and it is interesting to see Johann trying to fight off the seduction of just letting go (especially when one considers how vain he was and antagonistic when he lost his "good-looks" body).

Rise of titans and clash with dragon [they created] was fantastic action sequence, truly epic.

All in all fantastic finale, with realistic (at least as much as realistic it can be in this setting) ending. There is no happy end, at least not for majority.

Recommended to fans of BPRD, Hellboy universe and world mythology.

There are some great pages in this, and the tone at last feels centered, but there is not much that can be done to rescue the cohesion of the meandering narrative that was this series. Some arcs are topped off with more imagination than others but ultimate closure is postponed, since another series has already been budgeted - the very last pages are hack as hell.

It's been a long journey towards this volume, an ending to the saga. With all the ups and downs along the way, some superb art and some great stories, I'm sad to see the grand arch come to a close. As with any saga, the ending is both satisfying and unsatisfying.

My thanks to all the talented creators who have made this series one of my favorite graphic novels ever.

The epic finale that started several volumes ago. I think there is some stuff that goes on in hell that I didn’t understand because I haven’t read all of Hellboy. The book was great, incredible action but it felt rushed. A lot of characters die off-page and things which have been building up for 15 volumes unravel in a couple of pages. Still highly recommended but not 5 stars.

I still enjoy B.P.R.D. There are monsters where there should be and you don't know if the "good guys" will win. Your beloved characters are fallible and you appreciate them more for it. I miss the old team together.
