Dragon Seed

Rate this book
An angry teen, a desperate mother, a missing father, and a shadow lurking in the background. Things were going from bad to worse for Nick and his family. Tempted to run away after yet another argument with his mom, Nick receives a handwritten, leather-bound copy of an old book a family legend passed down to him from his great grandfather. The book, called Dragon Seed, leads Nick deep into his family's history and introduces him to another angry young man who lived in the shadows (the shadows of the tombs). Like Nick, you'll be shocked to discover where he fits in this story of epic proportions! This page-turning, young adult fiction story invites older children and teens into the real-life struggles of Nick. But it also ushers them into an imaginative exploration of the life of the young man Jesus saved as he wandered through the tombs. Best-selling author Marty Machowski uses both stories to introduce the reality of spiritual warfare and how its shadows affect and change us. Machowski, a trusted teacher for children of all ages, presents a thoroughly biblical view of spiritual warfare that emphasizes the importance of humility and dangers of pride. Teens will be drawn to the story of Nick and his struggles and will learn, as they read, to also identify the shadows in their own life and turn from them. While the biblical teaching is evident throughout the narrative of Dragon Seed, Machowski also includes a twelve-lesson Bible study at the end of the book to help teens ground their understanding of spiritual warfare on Christian principles. Youth pastors, leaders, and Christian parents will also want to explore with teens the small group study at the end of the book with its unique take on spiritual warfare that emphasizes the biblical theme of humility. This is a perfect book to read with a group and discuss together the implications of Nick's struggles for their lives.

Pretty good. Definitely better for pre-teens or teens with a lower reading level and nowhere near as excellent as Screwtape or Foulgrin. But still decent.

Dragon Seed by Marty Machowski is the tale of angry teen, Nick, and his path through reading a book handed down from his descendants that ultimately teaches the folly of pride and the reality of spiritual warfare.

I appreciated the reality of drawing attention to spiritual warfare in this book. Yes! It is so important for all of us (no matter our age) to be aware. I also thought that Mr. Machowski did a great job of pointing out the error (a grave one at that) of pride. It corrupts, taints all things, and separates us from God.

I also enjoyed Mr. Machowski's explanation of the dragon as representative of the devil's fall from heaven. His alterations to fit "the dragon" into Biblical stories was intriguing and created an interesting story to follow along to.

I think where this book began to break down for me was its intended audience. It's labeled as Young Adult and I therefore assume it's written for teens. The trouble for me upon first starting the book was the fact that it starts out in the mother's point of view. If I were still a teen, that would be very off-putting for me. How do I identify with a mom? Not to mention the fact that the "angry teen", Nick, is then portrayed as just that: an angry teen.

In my experience with youth ministry, the way to relate to teens is not by showing them exaggerated examples of themselves, but to establish common ground and then gently, lovingly, point out where there are issues. You build a relationship and then maneuver to the difficult subjects.

On that note, I also had trouble accepting the characters motivations and interactions with one another. I found it difficult to believe Martha would act as she did toward her friend Mia. I also was distracted by the head-hopping (switching from one characters POV to another within the same scene). I assume this was written in omniscient POV but it was distracting to me personally.

I did, however, really enjoy the "The Antidote" section of the book. A practical, 12-day devotional that would work well for a small group or Bible study.

All in all, I would say that this book could be useful to teens who already have an understanding of the Bible and are part of church culture so they would have some context to the story. I would be hesitant to hand this over to a teen who had no affiliation with Christianity. To me, Nick's character is described exactly how a parent would characterize him (at least initially) not as a teen a teen could relate to. He's angry, misunderstood, and volatile without reason (again, initially). Yes, I realize that is how teens act, but to a teen reading that, I think it could feel trite or off-putting.

My rating: 3.5*

This is a new to me author and one I'll be reading again! Dragon Seed really pulled me into the heart of the story instantly. From the start I was completely engrossed and taken on a fast paced ride of what's right and wrong. That's saying something for this book as I'm not a huge fan of young adult reads. However, this book....oh, this book really hooked me!

As a mom of two teens, one of whom is troubled and angry often times, this book hit home with me in so many ways. It's so much more than a simple young adult read. It's a book filled with Bible lessons and messages of prideful ways and seeking more of Him. I loved that! These are the kinds of characters, and plot lines, that I want to see my children reading! Lessons of good versus evil, right versus wrong....all of it so gripping!

This book is definitely worthy of 5 stars. It's phenomenaly created, it's well rounded with complex characters and God's lessons. If you are looking for a laugh out loud book for your child/teenager, then this isn't quite the book for you. If you are looking for a fantabulously written book, that will leave them thinking over and over again, then yes. Definitely grab this book up. It's not only for children/teens, but any adult who seeks a better relationship with God or who struggles with pride. The book comes with devotionals at the end. I can't wait to pass this on to my kiddos to see what they think! Well done, Mr. Machowski! Well done! This review was originally posted on Cafinated Reads

Allegories make fine teaching tools. Many Christian authors have used them in the past to communicate truth. Machowski has created an allegory to help young people understand the mutiny of the angels against God and the spread of evil in the world. He used the imagery of the dragon in Revelation to create the allegory. Readers are invited to use their imagination to see what might have happened centuries ago and what may be behind the actions of many today.

I really like this allegory. It is the story of the rebellion of Satan and his ongoing work told in an entertaining and thoughtful way. Machowski has kept close to the biblical account, something I greatly appreciate. His imagining how Satan may tempt people to evil today is very thought provoking.

I like how the allegory is framed in a modern day story. A rebellious teen is given the allegory to read and it captures his heart. That framework adds to the impact of the allegory. We see the truths of the allegory in action.

Machowski has also included twelve devotions at the end of the book. They are great lessons on the truths portrayed in the allegory. There are good questions at the end of each devotion too.

I highly recommend this book to children and adults alike. Parents would have a good time reading it with their children and discussing the questions with the devotions.

I received a complimentary egally of this book through Litfuse. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Dragon Seed by Marty Machowski is an expertly written novel telling the story of the origin and spread of pride through the life and eyes of an ordinary modern family. Nick Freeman, a rebellious and spirited teenager, is emotionally unstable and devastated by the loss of his father. Unsure of how to channel his emotion and insecurities he constantly argues and deliberately disobeys his tired mother who desperately tries to keep her son in line.

As the story progresses Nick’s soul becomes an intense battlefield of light versus dark, but as he reads his family’s history and discovers hidden truths will he be able to win out against his personal demons or are the roots of the dragon seed polluting Nick’s heart already too far gone to be removed?

This captivating novel of the battle of good versus evil in real life will leave you wondering what’s next and will open your mind to the battles of the spiritual realm. I enjoyed the ensuing conflicts in the lives of the characters in both the Freemans’ history and current timeline struggles.

A master story-teller, Marty Machowski, weaves a story that will keep teenagers engaged throughout the entire Dragon Seed book. With his imaginative method for retelling the story of Jesus and the young man who wandered through the tombs from Matthew 8:28-34, Marty teaches teenagers about spiritual warfare.

About the Book:
Dragon Seed is a story about Nick, an angry teenager, whose father is missing and whose mother is desperate. After another argument with his mother as Nick is contemplating running away when he receives a handwritten, leather-bound copy of an old book that contains the story of a family legend passed down from his grandfather to him. The book, Dragon Seeds, tells Nick the story of another angry young man who lived in the shadows of the tombs. How does Nick fit into this story of epic proportions?

I was teaching on Genesis 2 a few months ago and mentioned that the serpent was the dragon from Revelation. I wanted to read more about this and someone recommended this book. It is a short story within a story about the dragon seed. It is well done and easily approachable for young and older readers. It also includes a Bible study at the end (which is very good).

As I am not the intended audience for this book, I asked my teen daughter to read it and give me her thoughts. Here are her thoughts:

“The metaphorical part of this story was deep and it made me think about what God has to deal with with humans and their sin. The main characters were realistic. I learned a bit about the Bible and Jesus from the Bible studies included. Overall it was a good story. ”

My thoughts: At first I thought the author was ‘head-hopping’ which means that the point of view bounces between characters. It may have been that the author was using a technique known as omniscient narrator. Basically the narrator knows all of the characters thoughts and feelings. I found this a little distracting and it kept me from connecting with the current time characters. Having said that, I really enjoyed the allegorical part about the dragons. It was that part of the story that kept me turning the pages of this book.

I think that the Bible study portion was thought provoking and would probably be good to do in a youth group setting. 3 1/2 stars

(Reviewed by Jenna) DRAGONSEED hooked me from the very first word of the very first chapter. It was that good. It's basically the Bible in a bystanders point of view, someone who was there, but didn't know all the details. It was really really good.

It's about this teen who was disrespecting his parents and leaving the house at all hours of the night and day and scaring his mom half to death and not caring one bit. The loss of his dad triggered the problems.

His mom gives him this book and he reads it to get her off his back and he finds out what he's doing is wrong.

A hint of romance is included. I recommend this book for anybody who likes a good dragon story, or a spiritual warfare story.

This book is geared toward teens and tweens. I was given a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

About the Book:

An angry teen, a desperate mother, a missing father, and a shadow lurking in the background. Things were going from bad to worse for Nick and his family. But just as he was ready to leave home, he was given the story of his far-off grandfather to read another angry young man who lived in the shadows, but whose life was changed forever by his encounter with a carpenter who rescued him as he wandered through a first century graveyard. Could that long ago story save Nick as well?

My Review:

Nick is having trouble dealing with everyday life. His life seems to be turning itself upside down these days. As Nick starts to delve off into something that on the surface for all intents and purposes seems okay, he quickly learns it isn't. But what is he going to do when his life and this newly discovered world seems to be way too much for him to handle?

Nick seems to be a good young man that has been handed a very hard road in life but hopefully this experience will turn his life around. Dragon Seed is a book based primarily on allegory but my 12 year old son is enjoying it, very much. It seems really deep but understandable. The author is well researched and very talented. Can't wait to read more of his work.

Dragon Seed is the parallel story of teenage Nick and God's great love for mankind colliding in an action-packed, concrete way.  Machowski turns sin into dragons and makes the spiritual realm visual in a way that reminds me of Ted Dekker's Circle trilogy.
Dragon Seed is billed as a modern-day parable, and I don't think that label quite fits.  While part of the story is based on scripture straight from the Bible, but with the gaps we don't know filled in fictionally, much of the story is straight from scripture.  So much is based on Biblical account that I don't think it can be called a parable; I think 'allegory' is a better fit, although, again, so much is Biblical that I'm not sure that's a great moniker, either.
When it comes right down to it, I'm not sure the label is really all that important.  What is important is that the Biblical references are true and real.  The story is compelling and well written.  The characters are real and life-like and reachable.  The story itself is one that everyone can relate to.
I love the way that Machowski took the idea of the dragon from Revelation and used the concept of sin throughout the Bible to show how easily that sin can infect us all; how none of us are immune to it, and how nobody is too far gone to be saved from it.  The concrete imagery is easy to picture and something that, again, we can all relate to.
Amazon bills this book as for older children and teens, but I disagree.  With children of varying ages, and several adults all in the story, I think it's one that almost everyone can relate to.
As I finished reading the book, I found myself wishing for discussion questions, as my children were already clamoring to read it for themselves.    While those are not available, the book does contain twelve devotions at the end, which do include questions - and some even reference projects or activities you could do to make them more hands-on and inclusive.
Dragon Seed would be a great book for a youth group, church study, or family read aloud. It's versatile, exciting, and relates truth, but best of all, it points to Jesus's love while encouraging discussion.  Dragon Seed deserves a place on your bookshelf.

At first even though the book synopsis grabbed my attention, the cover did not really appeal to me. I thought my son might enjoy the book though, so I asked him if he would like to read it. However, he thought he would prefer to wait a while. Somehow, I ended up with the book anyhow and I am so glad I did. Not only, because I know my son is going to like it, but others I know will also benefit from this book, too.

This is quite an intriguing story. I was pretty much caught up in the tale from the first chapter, especially since I can relate to having teenagers. Nick is a young man with an attitude. He is becoming quite defiant and challenging his mother's authority. After reaching the end of her rope, his mom finally shares the family legend with him. It is written in a leather bound journal, one passed down from generation to generation. The book tells the story of Nick's family history, which ironically relates to all our family's history. It's the account of the dragon, once an angel, that fell from heaven and began sowing his dragon seed in the hearts of humans. The author was very creative in using the story from the Bible, written in a way kids can understand, to create a family legend. As he reads, Nick becomes intrigued; as was I. The author creatively presents the fall of man, sin, the promise of deliverance, the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, and hope for living free from the curse of the dragon seed. The end of the book includes a study covering the topic of pride and the antidote for the dragon seed.

I would definitely recommend this book. A great read for young folks that is very eye opening. Recommended for ages 12 and up, but some more mature 10 and 11 year old's would likely benefit.

A big thank you to the publisher and Litfuse Publicity for providing me with a free copy to read. I was not asked to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.

I found the cover of the book to be very captivating and imaginative. This book was mostly written as an allegory for preteens to illustrative cosmic powers and the spiritual forces of evil. Marty Machowski, a family life pastor at Covenant Fellowship church in Pennsylvania has presented us with a book which could be read one chapter a night as a family. He definitely has caught the imagination in a young person. Each chapter is about 7 pages long, not too scary, but with enough suspense, many reports say the children in the household were caught reading the book on their own, it was exciting enough the dragons swarming when evil was present. It probably sounds rather contrived but it is real enough that it leads into a very strong asking for forgiveness in the present day Nick’s life and a fear of rebellion.
The book ends with 12 small chapters of the ANTIDOTE, a prescription for uprooting the seed of the dragon and evil when it is threatening to invade your life. I wished there had been more words written to the preteen. It was heavy on scripture and clearly written to the parent. By the time the child had finished the story, he wanted to uproot evil, but the approach kind of felt heavy to me. Questions followed each day’s lesson, mostly on the work and sin or pride in your life. Pride seems like an adult idea, envy or some other more common words describing the dragons seed of evil might have been better. This part of the book definitely needs a non-judgmental grounded parent to explain the process of our awful sin of rebellion against God.
This book is definitely worth buying for your library collection and being part of your older children’s collection, it is rather one of a kind and perhaps an angry teen would be turned off.

Dragon Seed is a book that can grab hold of your teen or tween and teach them the truth's of God's word and the battle against evil, on their terms.  This was a quick read for me - a couple days, but both my boys read the book in about a day.  Both reported that they liked it and get a lot out of it.

During the tween and teen years, there is such a struggle for our children and for us as parents.  This book is an allegoric story that will give them a different perspective of that battle.  The battle is real, even though, sometimes we think it more than a spiritual one.  Dragon Seed points out the spiritual complexities very clearly.

The characters were very typical and real to, as a mother of teens and pre-teens.  I felt like the story was very believable.  So often our children are tempted by events and people around them.  This story shows how both are fighting for our children's attention.

Not only did this book take a deeper look at the child who is making the wrong choice, but the one who seems in the right, but still making spiteful or prideful choices.  So often, we see the child who is doing the wrong things as worse than the child who is seeming to do the right thing, but who is struggling with pride in their heart.

I highly recommend this book for parents and children to read.  It can lead to a great deal of important conversations.  I look forward to reading the next one, that I suspect will be out in the near future!

A single mother with two teens each facing their own demons. Nick, her son is angry and doesn't like to be told what to do. Martha, her daughter believes that everyone is wrong and judges others on their mistakes. When Nick and his mother get into another argument and Nick decides his only option is to run away; he receives a letter bound story that was passed down to him from his great grandfather. The book which is named "Dragon Seed", is reimagination of the exile of Satan from the Kingdom along with the arrival of Jesus. While reading the story, Nick is introduce to another angry young man. Nick bonds with this other young man and realizes that the story fits his life and the struggles he also faces in life. Will Nick be able to use the lessons to fit his own lifestyles? What are these shadows that keep following Nick and his sister?

The novel was an interesting and enjoyable read. I enjoyed reading the parts of both "real life" struggle of Nick and his mother along with the spiritual story. However, I felt some of the conversation between Nick and his family felt stilted and forced while the spiritual story felt rushed towards the end especially since it was drawn out in the beginning. It was an interesting read and a good read for children to help with their spiritual lessons. The author included a 12 step biblical teaching guide for readers to reinforce the biblical principles.

I completely enjoyed this takes. Nick is making bad choices. He doesn't like much of anything in his life and he isn't handling it well. His mother is having difficulty rising her children since their father is gone. Mainly because of their heritage, she has the most issues with Nick. Giving him the family legend to read she prays will help him.
I loved the imagery in the book. The shadows that the grandmother sees and recognizes at the beginning is really attention getting. The fact that it was set in a time period that is relatable while there is a story within the story was wonderful. The author did a great job with that. The way the story is written is an intriguing look at how Satan may have fallen. It certainly makes you think! Nick gets pulled into the family story and I enjoyed 'reading over his shoulder' and experiencing that.
It was a 5/5 for me. I would recommend for preteens and adults alike. I have a feeling if you read this more than once, you will see something new each time. Can't wait to read more from this author.

Although classified as juvenile fiction, Marty Machowski’s Dragon Seed is a worthwhile read for young and old alike. Written as an allegory, Dragon Seed is a story within a story, comparing and contrasting Lucifer’s fall from heaven to the earthly havoc resulting from that fall.

As the story unfolds, readers are sure to look inward searching for dragon seeds taking root within their own lives. Machowski’s story is clever and eye-opening, an easy to understand explanation of what happens when we succumb to ungodly characteristics such as pride, arrogance, and rebellion.

The all too familiar tale of teenage rebellion and the impact of that rebellion on the family unit will surely strike a chord with readers. Empathy for the story’s characters will leave book lovers with tears of both sadness and joy.

For anyone desiring to understand spiritual warfare, this book is a great starting place.

"Dragon Seed" is a story within a story (Princess Bride style) following Nick, an angry teen, as his mother gives him a story to read about dragons (a cautionary tale). I was not expecting this book to be so religious in nature, but I probably should have read the reviews before checking it out. It is heavily steeped in Christian philosophy and has a heavy religious undertone. The writing is pretty good though and the story is interesting. It seems targeted to teenagers, but the portrayal of Nick seems a little stereotypical (like the way a ten would be presented by an older adult) and his personality was not well developed. However, since the main story is really the book he reads, this might not be so significant. Please note that I received this book through a goodreads giveaway. All opinions are my own.

Mr. Machowski's book "Dragon Seed" is the type of book that once you open up the first page and start reading....you can't put it down. At least, that's how it was for me! Dragon Seed is an intriguing story. Even though this book is geared towards teens & young adults I still enjoyed this book, and I see "young adult" as a mindset and not an age category.

I highly recommend this book to all parents/grandparents who are wanting to present the gospel to their older children/grandchildren. Included is devotion on pride in the back of the book that is linked to the story.

This is the first book of Mr. Machowski's that I have read. I wasn't sure what to expect, but this story touched my heart and encouraged my mama heart. In the Dragon Seed he explains the war between Satan and God so clearly that a child could understand it, although I don't recommend this book for anyone under ten. I've been going to church all of my life and this is the first time I was able to see clearly what pastor's have been preaching about for eons.
The struggles that the teens in this book go through are the same ones our kids go through daily. I've raised three daughters and I could see the pull that the shadow had on each of them.
I haven't started it yet, but Mr. Machowski included a Bible study in the back of the book.
I highly recommend this book.

This a powerful, attention-grabbing story. I found it hard to put down. It makes you more aware of the battle taking place between holy and evil forces, and what we must do to resist the evil one.

My intention was to read this aloud to my 15 and 17 year old sons, but the schedule never cooperated. I will be urging them to read it for themselves, though. I may even share a copy with some of the teens at church.

At the end of the book is The Antidote: the secret to uprooting the seed of the dragon, a twelve-day prescription. Twelve daily devotionals, basically. I find this very useful.

I certainly would recommend anyone involved in children's ministry to check this out, and add it to your church's resource library.

Cool concept, and seems like it’d be an effective teaching tool. It’s a good illustration of Ephesians 6:12. It sheds light on the spiritual forces arrayed against mankind, the tactics they use, and examples of ways they operate in a modern setting. As a novel, it’s kind of repetitive after awhile, and the allegorical portion (written as a story-within-a-story) has a lot of irrelevant descriptions I eventually started skimming. I found the present-day story more engaging, but overly simplistic. The characters are supposed to be high school students, but they think and behave like much younger kids. I doubt teens will find them relatable. Younger readers might enjoy the story, though, and it’d be a good book to use for a Bible study with middle schoolers.

Anyhow, Dragon Seed wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, the book is well written, but I thought it was a little short. The story itself is 24 chapters along and the rest of the book is a 12-lesson Bible study. The plot involves a rebellious teenager who learns to change his ways and find faith in the Lord after reading a book that was handed down from his great-grandfather, which contains a hidden meaning about Christ's death and resurrection.

Overall, Dragon Seed is a fast-paced little story with a wonderful spiritual message. Besides from the story length, I enjoyed reading the book.

My son started reading this before I had a chance to. He's 14 and thought the book was ok. I enjoyed the book as an allegory for young teens. It's the first book we've read by this author. I enjoy books that give the reader a glimpse into what could be happening in the spiritual world around us. I thought it would be a good book for a youth small group. It's a good way for them to understand how pride works in our lives. At the end is twelve days of discussions on how to uproot this "dragon seed."

I gave this book to my soon to be 13 year old thinking he would enjoy it since he loves books about dragons. He claimed he didn't like it. Once I read it and started to discuss the book with him he admitted that he felt convicted. He has been displaying the same disrespectful attitude to us as Nick does to his mother. We are doing The Antidote together. This allegory is not only for teens who are lacking in humility but it is also an eye opener for parents. I highly recommend this book.

Great allegory, kids of any age will be drawn in by the story. From chapter two: You, my reader, are in danger. Pay attention carefully to what I'm about to tell you. You may already be infected. Have the seeds of darkness already begun to sprout in you?
Nick sat up with a slight shiver.

I like to review juvenile fiction so I can find good books for my nieces and nephews to read...... and also because I enjoy reading them.

This story is different from most of the juvenile fiction I read in that it is an allegory. The main character, Nick, is reading the story which is the story of Satan's fall up through Jesus' resurrection. A lot of the focus is on what the devil tries to accomplish. Even though I know the narrative very well, the author put a whole new spin on it that kids are sure to enjoy, along with adults. Even though I know how the story ends, the book still pulled me in and I didn't want to put it down. The author has a great writing style that is both entertaining and teaches a lesson.

Dragon Seed is definitely a book kids will enjoy, and will hold their interest for sure. Though the story will be familiar to most, it is packaged in a totally different way than kids are used to hearing. This is a great way to get kids to read the Bible and get the important lessons from it they may otherwise overlook.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

An interesting fictional account of the story of Satan's ongoing struggle against God.

Alternating between the Biblical narrative and everyday situations of preteen kids, the author describes spiritual battles behind our earthly temptations.

I appreciated the allegory element of the story most. This book would be a great Bible study for junior high students.
