I've been feeling a little disillusioned with this genre lately. I guess the hazard of devouring such a ridiculous number of historical romances is that they all start to feel annoyingly similar :) I've actually taken a bit of a break from romance this summer, starting very few of them and bothering to finish even fewer.

I made an exception for this book because I absolutely love Katharine Ashe's writing style even if I don't always love WHAT she writes (more about that later!) and, well, because the price was so delightfully low compared to most other new releases :) I ended up reading this entire book in a few hours----not because it isn't long enough, but because I loved it too much to put it down. As some of you fellow bookworms know, things like sleeping and eating become markedly less important when you're totally immersed in a beloved book!

The first thing prospective readers should know is that this book contains a really well-developed whodunit. I know that some romance readers don't like mystery mixed in with their romance, so consider yourselves warned! I'm a lifelong mystery lover, however, and I actually tend to get restless when romances are about nothing other than the primary couple's internal angst for 300+ pages, so the fact that I Adored A Lord contained such a compelling mystery was a huge plus for me. And you know how most of the murder mysteries you find in romances are mediocre at best and downright cringe inducing at worst? Well, I'm happy to report that this one was genuinely well done!

Katahrine Ashe's writing is sublime. Seriously, anyone who contends that the romance genre is totally devoid of intelligence and literary merit should be directed to read Katahrine Ashe's work. Her writing is clever, insightful, witty without being goofy and surprisingly thought provoking.

I liked the heroine a lot. She's a slightly odd animal lover who's both sensitive and spirited, admirable yet flawed. But it's the hero who stole my heart in this one. He's a restless soul who's desperate for adventure and fearful of remaining in one place for too long, which makes him both amusing and interesting. I've grown to dislike the typical 'hyper-controlling, angry alphas' and 'drunken frat boy rogues' that populate far too many romance novels these days, and I'm happy to report that, while Vitor does have a few of those qualities, he's also one of those increasingly rare heroes who I found genuinely root-worthy and likable: honorable, spirited and kind.

I'm not a big fan of explicit sex scenes as a general rule, but for those who are, rest assured that this book is moderately 'steamy' and passionate without being one of those books that contains hundreds of pages of repetitive, can't-tell-one-from-the-other bedroom scenes between the H and h.

If the worst criticism I can hurl at a book is that I disliked the names of its main characters (Ravenna and Vitor...really?!), then you know I found it an immensely satisfying reading experience :) I didn't love the first book in this series, but this one was far more lively and sucks-you-in engaging for me. I recommend it very highly!

If you like the game Clue with some romance thrown in, you'll probably like this story. For me, there were way too many characters thrown in the mix, to the point I was still racking my brain for who was who half way through the book. The storyline involving the murder mystery was very convoluted and stole a lot of time away from what I thought worked, the chemistry and romance between the leads. Katharine Ashe, in my opinion, really shines when her writing focuses and explores the depth of emotion between her leads. However, the spotlight shone on the whodunnit plot and its vast array of characters for most of the book. I also felt like in the beginning that the leads talked at each other instead of with.

Ashe's writing is solid enough that if you are a mystery/Clue fan and like a splash of romance, you'll probably enjoy this one. I on the other hand, am going to set this one aside and anxiously anticipate the next in the series and hope that the style, elements, and emotion Ashe writes so well are more prevalent in it.

The second book in Ms Ashe’s Prince Catchers trilogy focuses on Ravenna, the youngest of the three foundling sisters who have lived for a number of years under the guardianship of Mr Martin Caulfield, the vicar of a small country parish. In the previous book, I Married the Duke, a fortune teller prophesied that when one of them married a prince, they would finally discover the truth about their parentage. Arabella, the middle sister, is determined to fulfil the prophecy, but ends up falling in love with and marrying the Duke of Lycombe – a happenstance which has an unexpected effect on Ravenna’s life.

She is a free-spirited young woman whose love of nature and animals has led to her becoming skilled in the care of animals, and also in the knowledge of human anatomy and medicine. For the last six years, she has resided with Sir Beverley Clark and his close friend (and long-term companion) Mr. Pettigrew, where she looks after their menagerie of dogs, birds and horses. She likes her life, and is stunned when Sir Beverley informs her that due to her sister’s change in circumstances, it is no longer possible or appropriate for Ravenna, as the sister-in-law of a duke to be employed in service.

Still intent on fulfilling the gypsy’s prophecy, Arabella inveigles an invitation for Ravenna to attend a house party in the Franche-Comté which will be attended by Prince Sebastao of a minor branch of the Portugese royal family. Ravenna accompanies her employer and his friend, ever mindful of the fact that she is not of the same class as everyone else and, in fact, determined to remain on the fringes, wearing her practical, drab dresses and pursing her usual daily routines with the animals.

The house party has been convened so that the prince – a rather dissipated young man – can choose himself a bride from the suitable young ladies his parents have chosen to be paraded before him.

Among the other guests is Lord Vitor Courtenay, half-brother of the Earl of Chase. Ravenna can see that every female head in the place has been turned by the extremely handsome and charming Lord Courtenay, yet he displays no interest in anyone – except her.
Obviously, at a gathering involving a number of young ladies with marital ambitions towards the prince, and their equally ambitious mamas, there are bound to be metaphorical daggers drawn. The problems start, however, when the dagger turns out to be not so metaphorical and Ravenna stumbles across the body of a young man, dead from a stab-wound and encased in a suit of armour.

The snow sets in around the castle, meaning that the guests are pretty much stranded until it lets up, so Ravenna and Vitor work together to investigate the murder, exposing them to danger at the same time as it brings them closer together. The pair has great chemistry, and the way Ms Ashe creates and develops the romantic tension between the two is one of the most enjoyable things about the book. She is one of those authors who is able to write sharp, witty banter that never feels forced, or as though she has to try to be amusing – and it’s a joy to read.

Ms Ashe has penned a thoroughly entertaining “country house whodunnit”, acknowledging in her author’s note, her debt to Agatha Christie and the indomitable Hercule Poirot. She has assembled a fairly large and, it has to be said, sometimes clichéd cast – a pair of bitchy twins, a gruff horse-breeder and his mousy daughter, a vivacious Scottish heiress and her no-nonsense mother, a retiring scientist, and the handsome earl and his even handsomer half-brother. But the fact that the secondary characters are all easily recognisable “types” shouldn’t be seen as a bad thing. They are well fleshed-out and familiarity with the tropes allows the reader to just sit back and enjoy the way the story unfolds.

Vitor and Ravenna make a very engaging couple. Vitor is a hero to die for; brave and honourable, he is not without his inner demons, but is also not a man to shy away from them. He has spent the last few years leading a monastic existence, trying to find a way to come to terms with a terrible betrayal and to find a more equable approach to life. He’s smitten with Ravenna from their first meeting, and he comes quickly to respect her intelligence and her abilities; he never wants her to be anything other than the woman she is. Ravenna is a terrific heroine – independent (without being stupidly “feisty”), clever and not afraid to speak her mind, especially in defence of those who find it difficult to defend themselves.

Ms Ashe is an excellent storyteller and I thoroughly enjoyed reading I Adored a Lord, but I do have a couple of criticisms. Firstly, Ravenna’s insistence in clinging to the belief that her station in life is too far beneath Vitor’s to allow them to be together is allowed to go on for a little too long; and secondly, while the identity of the murderer is brilliantly tongue-in-cheek, it comes rather out of left field, and doesn’t really make much sense in terms of the story as a whole. That said, though, it still make me laugh and neither of these reservations is enough to have spoiled my enjoyment of the book, to which I’m giving a hearty recommendation.

I Adored A Lord by Katharine Ashe
Book Two of The Prince Catchers series
Publisher: Avon
Publication Date: July 29, 2014
Rating: 4 stars
Source: eARC from Edelweiss

***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***

Summary (from Goodreads):

Three very different sisters beguile society with their beauty and charm, but only one of them must fulfill a prophecy: marry a prince. Who is the mystery Prince Charming, and which sister will be his bride?

All that clever, passionate Ravenna Caulfield wants is to stay far away from high society's mean girls.

All that handsome, heroic Lord Vitor Courtenay wants is to dash from dangerous adventure to adventure.

Now, snowbound in a castle with a bevy of the ton's scheming maidens all competing for a prince's hand in marriage, Ravenna's worst nightmare has come true.

Now, playing babysitter to his spoiled prince of a half-brother and potential brides, Vitor is champing at the bit to be gone.

When a stolen kiss in a stable leads to a corpse in a suit of armor, a canine kidnapping, and any number of scandalous liaisons, Ravenna and Vitor find themselves wrapped in a mystery they're perfectly paired to solve. But as for the mysteries of love and sex, Vitor's not about to let Ravenna escape until he's gotten what he desires...

What I Liked:

This series is so great! I really enjoyed the first book, featuring Arabella, and I really liked this one, featuring Ravenna! Each book in this trilogy features each of the three sisters. Ravenna is the youngest, and the most spirited. She was sent to live with a vicar at a young age, and they adopted her. This particular book start with Ravenna being invited to a party for a prince, in which the prince is trying to pick a bride. Arabella is sending Ravenna there. Ravenna thinks she is waiting for Arabella, the newly married Duchess of Lycombe, but Arabella is trying to match Ravenna with the Prince Sebastiao. Of course, it doesn't work out that way.

A murder occurs in the castle during the party, and Ravenna takes it upon herself to find out who did it, since she found the dead Mr. Walsh. She and the devilish Vitor Courtenay team up to unearth the assassin. Ravenna doesn't know that Vitor is the prince's half-brother (but not a prince himself). She has no intentions of falling for anyone, but falling for Vitor proves to inevitable and thrilling.

I love the dual parts to this story! We have a whodunit mystery, which actually becomes very interesting and puzzling, and we have Vitor and Ravenna's relationship. Oh, and the prince and his choosing a bride - that is quite funny, in my opinion. There are so many ladies there, vying for the prince's attention. It's like The Bachelor! Ravenna has no interest in the prince (other than friendliness), so she finds the whole deal hilarious.

Of course, she has more important things to worry about, like the murder, and Lord Courtenay's flirtatious advances. The investigator doesn't want her (a woman) involved in the investigation, but Ravenna has a knack for details and discovering things. I like the way her mind works.

I really like Vitor - he is honorable, sincere, noble, kind. Ravenna doesn't seem to understand that he doesn't care that she isn't in the same social circles as him. Heck, he's brother to the prince, but he chooses to be a lord, not a bastard prince. Vitor is extremely intelligent, caring, and considerate. I like him a lot!

The romance in this book takes time, but I love how Ashe builds up the chemistry, and each protagonist's feelings. Vitor is very sure of his feelings, whereas Ravenna is convinced that as nobility, he just wants her for a bit of fun. Which is not the case, but it's understandable. In the end, I love that Vitor never gave up on Ravenna, but also, that Ravenna never gave up on the hope of a relationship with Vitor (even though everything was in her head, all of the doubts and whatnot).

I feel like I haven't said much about this book in general, but it's a whodunit mystery with romance! I've said a lot about the romance, but I can't say much about the mystery, that will ruin things. All I can say is that I LOVE this one line from the book reminds me of this one line in a certain Disney movie. Tweet at me if you're curious as to what I'm talking about - I don't want to spoil it in my review.

What I Did Not Like:

I think the only thing I wanted more was more scenes between Vitor and Ravenna, in which Ravenna wasn't telling him to back off, even though it was quite obvious that she really didn't want him to back off. *winks*

Would I Recommend It:

Definitely! This is a really good historical romance novel! Probably a year-end favorite. This series is EXCELLENT. If you read the first one, be sure to read this one! And even if you haven't read the first one, you should still catch this one, if you love historical romance novels!

Rating:

4 stars. Quite a good one we have here! I have much admiration and respect for Katharine Ashe - she is very talented! I cannot wait to read Eleanor's story - will she be the one to marry a prince? Arabella married a duke, Ravenna married a lord (the brother of a prince)... we're getting closer!

I found My Lady, My Lord to be quite divine when I read it ages ago, so when I saw that Hoopla had added a whole slew of Katharine Ashe novels to its catalog, I jumped at the chance to try another. The premise for this one sounded quite extraordinary, so even though it is the second book in a companion series, I couldn't help myself. It's a fault of mine, but it hasn't been my downfall yet. I Adored a Lord was elegant and fanciful and everything I'd been hoping for. With a murder mystery afoot and a prince's affections to win, the clever yet hoydenish Ravenna has a lot on her hands, even if she cares more about the former than the latter. This story was intricate, but while on the long side, it was never plodding. In fact, I adored (heh) the slowness of the revelations that came as Ravenna worried at her attraction to Vitor, the prince's bastard brother, and how their relationship evolved. The story was sweet and romantic and one of the better additions to the historical romance genre.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

I enjoyed this book more than the first one. The premise of the three orphan sisters trying to discover the identity of their father is interesting. Ravenna, loves animals and spent much of her life learning to care of them, as well as learning from the doctors about how to care for people. She goes to a house party having no idea that it is really a set-up for her to meet a prince. Because of a Gypsy fortune teller, the sisters hope that the prince can tell the sisters who their father is.

Ravenna was a great heroine. I loved everything about her. She didn't care what anyone thought, but was still insecure about her place in the world. She was not comfortable being around the upper class people at the party, but managed to do just fine.

When she discovers a dead body in a suit of armor, she convinces the H, Vitor, to let her help investigate. Because of her background in animal/people medicine and because she knows the life of a servant, she is very good at seeing things other people don't see. She and Vitor make a great team. They spend more time together and begin to fall in love.

The mystery aspect of the story was very good, but the resolution left me wanting more. Certain plot points were swept under the rug, and there wasn't much comeuppance for some of the characters.

The H/h banter back and forth and were very entertaining. The story was romantic, but it took until nearly the end for any romantic resolution and that annoyed me. We got there eventually, but I didn't like the twisty path and the H/h were in denial for too long.

I'm planning on reading book 3, but I can't find any safety details. The H/h in book 3 are made out to be a couple with an epic love, but after the H disappears for 10 years, I swear, if he was off screwing OW all that time I am going to be so mad. That is not epic love IMO.

This book was provided by Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first book from Katharine Ashe, and what an introduction it was! I ADORED A LORD was essentially a story about an historical game of Clue—you know...the cook did it in the kitchen with the butter knife—with some romance tossed in! Though this book was the second in the series, I have not read the first and didn't feel lost while reading this one.

Ravenna was a wonderful heroine. Though her life didn't measure up by society's standards, she'd managed to find contentment. Falling in love (and lust) was not on her agenda. Vitor has spent his life gallivanting from one crisis to the next. When he is appointed to 'babysit' his brother, he has no idea the excitement that will come charging into his path, and quite possibly change his life.

I loved both of the main characters in this book. Ravenna may have been eccentric by society's standards, but I thought she was sort of a 'plain Jane' type of heroine—one of my favorites! She wasn't over the top or stubborn; she took life as it came and went with it, and she accepted people as they were.

Vitor wasn't your typical hero. He wasn't revered by society, nor did he care what they thought. He was also content just to live his life, that is until Ravenna makes her stunning debut.

Ravenna and Vitor had chemistry from the moment they met; luckily, it evolved quickly! Their first introduction was so much fun that it left me anticipating their next meeting. When a murder that occurs in the castle they're staying at, it's the catalyst that really forces Ravenna and Vitor to spend time together and get to know one another. It's not long before Vitor realizes how intelligent Ravenna is, and he respected her immediately. He saw her as his equal and always treated her as such, even when some of the conniving members of society tried to make him think otherwise.

I thought the pacing of this book was perfect; a new clue was always turning up, and I was kept guessing as to who the murderer was until the very end. The way Ravenna and Vitor's relationship progressed was realistic. Though their attraction was immediate, they both saw that for what it was, and it wasn't until later that real feelings started to develop. Ravenna valued her independence and knew that a man could pose a threat to that. I thought her misgivings were believable and consistent with her character.

I only have one criticism for this book, and that is the large cast of characters. There were so many and they all played such vital roles in the book that I had a hard time keeping them straight at first. I was eventually able to sort them out, but I was over halfway into the book before I knew who was who. Having said that, there were some stand outs, and I especially liked the men who were in Ravenna's life.

Overall, I thought this book was a fun, unique read! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance, particularly if you are looking for something new and different in the genre!

Ravenna Caulfield is one of three sisters raised by a local vicar, Mr. Michaels Caulfield. For the past six years, Ravenna has lived with Sir Beverley Clark and his lifetime companion Mr. Pettigrew caring for their numerous birds, dogs, cats, and occasional farm-animal. Ravenna’s sister, Arabella, recently married a Duke and believes Ravenna should marry someone of equal or greater social status. Ravenna soon finds herself at a house party in France thrown for the sole purpose of finding Prince Sebastiao a wife. Among the guests is Vitor Courtenay, half-brother of the Earl of Chase. Vitor doesn’t seem to take any notice of the gaggle of women parading around at the house party, except for Ravenna. When Ravenna stumbles upon a murdered house guest, she and Vitor team up to investigate the murder and find the killer.

I….struggled to finish this one. It was “historical romance” meets “Clue” and while I greatly enjoy both of those things……not together. At least not like this. Normally I’m all about spicing up my romance novels with a good mystery – a murder mystery at that – but something about the execution of this one flopped. My head spun trying to keep track of all the characters (“suspects”), their motives and desires, as well as just what the heck was going on in the story itself. I felt that the actual “romance” between Ravenna and Vitor was lost amongst the chaos of the story, which in the end made their supposed love somewhat incredulous and forced.

Vitor is an honorable man who has spent a great deal of time around religious orders of varying types and religious hermits. Were it not for his desire for Ravenna, he is the type of man who would seriously consider taking religious vows himself. Ravenna is independent and sharp-witted, easily finding connections between the seemingly incongruous clues littering the house party and its guests. She is also a skilled medical woman with an affinity for animals. Together, Ravenna and Vitor made a good investigation team, but the feelings between them seemed more friendly than amorous. There was no real sizzle of chemistry that came across in the writing and many of their conversations centered around figuring out the mystery, not each other.

As for the mystery plot itself, I felt that it was well-paced, but more convoluted than necessary. The identity of the murderer came about after several red herrings, which I don’t mind, but the explanation felt jumbled, choppy, and a tad anti-climactic. Again, I think this was a product of too many characters. For anyone who has played the “Clue” DVD with all three endings viewed in sequence, that is very much like the last 25% of this book – it could have happened like this! Or like this! But it really happened like this! Sheer chaos and confusion. It would have played much better if the book was shorter and tighter with its explanations and plot development.

Another lovely book by one of my fave authors. Ashe manages to capture the essence of the emotional interaction between characters, as much by what is said as by what is left unsaid.
In this story, the second of a trilogy, we get to read Ravenna's tale. She is the "nature child" of the three sisters, who have been told by a gypsy that if one of them manages to marry a prince, they will discover the identity of their father.
Ravenna loves animals and has trained herself to become something of a healer. Her best friend is her dog, Beast, and she eschews all the usual society things like lovely gowns, elaborate hairstyles and grand balls. She feels she is really more a member of the servant class, because she is technically employed by two rather darling older men (it is unstated, but they are clearly in a long-term relationship and the completely non-judgemental love Ravenna has for them, and they have for her, is a delight) and does not aspire to marriage or any other conventional goals.
She meets the hero, Vitor, the Lord of the title, (who I would snap up in a heart-beat!) at a castle, where the assembled guests hope the Prince will choose one of their number as his bride. When Ashe works to create a Good Man for a hero, he really is all that and more. She is able to make him Alpha and fabulously attractive, whilst endowing him with compassion and, in this case, humility, and sensitivity. Sigh!
A murder takes place and we have a whodunnit as well as a passionate, conflicted romance. The different characters are beautifully drawn, a little like an Agatha Christie story, and Ravenna and Vitor's relationship is emotional, sometimes painful but ultimately incredibly fulfilling. (Great to see the hero take the risk and profess his love first.)

I really enjoyed this book, but the first in the series is a ripper, too, so I would recommend the whole trilogy.

Ravenna Caulfield’s ruination began with a bird, continued with a pitchfork, and culminated with a corpse wearing a suit of armor.

I adored a lord is a great representative of historical romance genre. This book has lovely MCs, beautiful romance, mystery and a LOTS of excellent humor. Mostly humor part was everywhere and it kept the book in a lighter mood than the previous one or the next one.

From the first pages it was easy for me to connect with our MC Ravenna. She is intelligent lovely heroine, I wasn't annoyed with her actions or thoughts the way it usually happens with me in romance genre. Nope. Ravenna was absolutely reliable character. Our hero Vitor was a great match for her and as I am a girl after all, I couldn't not notice how gorgeous he is - definitely book boyfriend. The romance was gradually build between Rovenna and Vitor, no insta love, also I have to admit Vitor was more infatuated with Ravenna at first, but to her this new feelings were confusing and not in she-annoys-me-with-her-I-don't-want-to-love-him way, Ravenna excepted her feelings, but there were other obstacles for her to openly admit her love. There were times I felt a little bit frustrated with characters, but it was no big deal and mostly I enjoyed their relationship. You can't read a romance expecting it to be without genre's cliches, right? I can tell for myself, that this book has less cliches than most representatives of historical romance. Vitor and Ravenna were both intelligent, reasonable characters and also they were funny, their first encounter resulted in a bruise and a limp for Vitor. One of the best scenes ever! Like I said this book is full of funny moments and I honestly couldn't stop laughing most of the time

“Marylebone is a neighborhood, not a duke. And threatening a man with hanging in the uncertain future when he’s got you in his power at present is idiocy.”

“And if your father is a duke,” he said, “I am the Emperor of China.”
“Pleasure—” She gasped. “To make your acquaintance—your imperial majesty.”

The rutting urge must have overcome him. The only male creature that had ever considered her lovely was Beast, and that was because she sometimes smelled like bacon.

She looked over her shoulder at him. “Do make certain to keep the sword away from me so that I don’t snatch it from you and do away with everyone in the house before breakfast.”

Also, lovers of animals (as myself) will be delighted - this book has a lot of cute pets.

What I loved most that this book has a mood. I felt like reading Agatha Christie book. Imagine: castle somewhere far away from civilization, a bunch of strangers, snow storm and everyone confined together in this vast castle and of course murder - it makes the whole situation eerie. Though this book was funny, the mystery part was masterly executed. I am a big fan of a good detective story and was happy beyond words to find a solid believable mystery in this book. I couldn't solve it until author let me see the solution. I appreciated that MCs were investigating the mystery together and that gave them real ground to know each other better: they fell in love with each others personalities more than appearance and that was very refreshing.

And at last, here is a little bit of the romance sneak peak to see what's awaiting you, reader, in this wonderful book.

He came directly to her, seized her face between his hands, and captured her mouth beneath his. He kissed her powerfully, deeply, as though he would have all of her through this kiss, and she held on to his waist and gave herself up to him.

Ravenna Caulfield beats to her own drummer, as free spirit of sorts she has made her way in life doing what is not expected by a young lady in society. Finding a home with two elderly men and tending to their animals has given Ravenna a cause, until she loses a beloved pet and finds herself again unsettled.

When Ravenna is swept away to a bride hunt for a Prince, she can think of a hundred other things she would rather do. With an incident with a mysterious man and a dead body discovered, things are beginning to look up again for Ravenna who plans to be part of the investigation.

Lord Vitor Courtenay doesn't know why Ravenna has caused his dormant body to come alive but he wants her. Now that she is not backing down and wants to uncover who the killer is, Vitor is struggling between protecting her and keeping himself on his toes when she is around. With a mystery to solve and a growing affection blossoming, I Adored A Lord is a charming story you wont be able to put down.

Delightful read, Ravenna is tenacious and you simply adore her from the first chapter. Vitor is a bit more stoic but something about Ravenna has him breaking out of his shell. This was humorous, romantic and bewitching. New to me author, definitely checking out more of this talented authors books.

A spectacularly terrible book, over-stuffed with stereotyped characters (the Frenchwoman named Dijon with the tiny dog, for instance?), grossly randy aristocrats, mean girls and their mean parents, and an incredibly tacky mystery involving the dismemberment of a character not yet introduced. In all, this book is a disaster, from the nut-job cover (Lady Gaga wig and all) to the ridiculous way that the hero and heroine discover each other (a kiss in the stables, accompanied by a badly described beating - or stabbing? I read it twice and still can't decide - with a pitchfork and followed by a bite, which would earn any real girl a permanent goodbye, not a heated glance. This chick's a basket case, not a treat. And this guy's a nervous, weird dork, not an appealing, complex hero.

The only reason to read this is to further along the non-mysterious resolution of the series, which is OBVIOUSLY this: Taliesin is a prince, and he will marry Ravenna and Arabella's older sister, Eleanor. Any romance fan who's made it through both of these books and not figured that out needs to turn in her card, now. Not recommended.

2 'are you serious?' stars

I'm not even sure what to put here. I didn't like this story. I usually love Katharine Ashe but this one didn't do it for me. I'm so disappointed. I was hoping I'd like it but it was a slow, terrible read for me. I'm glad everyone else seemed to enjoy it. I am the minority that didn't.

3.5 Vitor stars..!!

Oh..! I do love a good mystery. And when a hero and the heroine solves a murder mystery with the threat always behind the back could you ask for more..?

Vitor and Ravenna had a rapport from the very beginning. I dug their banter. For a lord and a so-called-servent they had it going. I loved them every which way.

And also Lady Iona... !! My god she was awesome..!! Hilarious and raunchy.! Loved her..!!

And now I want to know what happens between the proper Eleanor and Tali..!!

Could anyone guess who will be the prince?? I know It was a teller..!! ;) ;P

This book was kind of a disaster for me. I liked the hero and heroine a lot, but the plot was ridiculous and poorly planned and it really hurt the storytelling and the romance. The mystery elements were ridiculous and barely foreshadowed and I just didn't buy into any of the things going on in the background.

I Adored "I Adored a Lord" When a stolen kiss in a stable leads to a corpse in a suit of armor, a canine kidnapping, and any number of scandalous liaisons, Ravenna and Vitor find themselves wrapped in a mystery they're perfectly paired to solve. But as for the mysteries of love and sex, Vitor's not about to let Ravenna escape until he's gotten what he desires . . .

Due to a prophecy given to her sister (in Book 1, “I Married a Prince”), one of Ravenna’s three sisters is to marry a Prince and when they do, they will find out who their family really is. Since Ravenna’s sister, Arabella, didn’t marry a Prince, Arabella puts her hopes on Ravenna and hence her attendance at this house party which is really a matchmaking party for Prince Sebastiao, Vitor’s half brother. Ravenna is astonishingly allowed to participate in this house party even though she is not really a lady, but rather, tends to the animals of two aging Lords who are attending the party. Her wit and lack of airs is a refreshing element to the house party and she can’t help but attract notice for this and her exotic, foreign looks.

Vitor stumbles upon her the first night and steals a kiss from Ravenna, after being celibate for 2 years after the war. Being the Prince’s half brother, he is there to make sure everything goes according to plan despite the cast of characters that are attending this party! Nobody is really likeable except maybe Iona and Ann, who befriend Ravenna.

When the murder occurs, Ravenna attaches herself to Vitor and is very determined to figure out what happened. Their attraction is obvious but not acted upon in any major way. I love the banter and friendship that develops between them which lends more credibility to them “falling in love” with each other. I hate it when after 2 days, the h/h “fall in love” – this is so unbelievable I can’t help but roll my eyes. Even though this is about a week or so, it does seem realistic given how the story is written.

2 out of 2 for this series. I loved this story and found it to be really unique. It was very "Clue" - like in the solving of the mystery at this house party and how the h/h team up to solve it. Their attraction was immediate but their ultimate coupling was a very slow, methodical one and I loved it. Then when it happened, there was no going back. I like when the hero is more affected as well - that's always nice for a change. I will be reading more and more of Katharine Ashe and will be eagerly awaiting the third book in this series!

Don't you just love the cover - beautiful!

A charming read, with sweet romance and thrilling mystery, I Adored a Lord was a lovely historical romance. I really enjoyed reading this wonderful book.

Ravenna was a great heroine. She was clever, kind-hearted, and had a quietly strong will. She wasn't a particularly memorable character, but I did like her.

Vitor was wonderful. He was so sweet, eminently honorable, and very clever. He was a true gentleman that was also remarkably resilient. I absolutely adored him.

The romance was very sweet. Ravenna and Vitor were lovely together. There was was some heat between them, with some definite sensuousness, but they were a mostly sweet couple. I thought they were great together.

The plot was well paced and I was kept interested the entire way through. The mystery was well done, though I wasn't totally hooked into it. I definitely didn't expect who the killer turned out to be, and I especially didn't guess how far the whole affair went. I enjoyed the story and the ending was wonderful.

I Adored a Lord was a lovely historical romance. From the mystery, to the romance, this book was certainly an enjoyable read. Romance lovers, this is a book worth checking out.

I ended up liking it a lot more towards the end than I thought I would - because really, this is like a 2.5 star read.

This is a cozy mystery and historical romance hybrid. My main issue was how the relationship between H/hr developed. The dialogue between Ravenna and Vitor was stilted and awkward at times. Ravenna's personality is one of practicalism and self-reliance, and with her medical work with animals, it makes sense. She's not particularly witty or feminine, but yet she wins Vitor, Lord Courtenay by...well, I'm not really sure. It seems like there was a missed opportunity there for a slow burn type of love that was born of intelligence and strength. Instead, he took one look at her in a barn and had to kiss her I guess. And, thus begins a romance.

The mystery had some plot holes, but wasn't predictable. There were a couple of character twists which were well-played I thought . And it did come together in the end for me.
