The Random Factor

Rate this book
The human race has escaped to the Andromeda galaxy and started anew. Now, centuries after their escape, they have expanded to an Empire over one hundred parsecs in diameter. The Empire relies on a bustling economy to support its needs. Small, independent merchant vessels are an important part of the Empire’s continued success in connecting the Empire’s wealth with systems in need of imports for their survival.

Randal Waide, a retired member of the Explorer Corps, has left the plush life of being Noble born to explore and earn a living wage in the inky blackness of space. He wastes no time accepting his trusted partner and companion Merci Ohay’s recommendation to deliver a timed cargo to Beta-V, a metal-rich mining planet outside of Her Majesty’s sphere of influence. The cargo will render an extraordinary payout — one that would allow the final payment on his trading vessel. The Resolute would be his, free and clear. One more delivery and Randal would finally be a ship owner.

Merci Ohay, an artificial human produced by Neo-Genetics Insights, had helped him pay down the ship’s debt in the eight years since she had joined him as his partner. Her skills complemented his own which had been derived from years in the Explorer Corps. They were an efficient team. Unfortunately, his cargo becomes mired in bureaucratic red tape and Randal is forced to wait to clear the sale. He is looking forward to a new beginning as a ship owner and he wants to share the profits with Merci. Then the rains begin and all hell breaks loose.

Follow the adventures of Randal Waide as he becomes entangled in a star-spanning conspiracy to take over the Empire — one seemingly random encounter after another.
