I read this book totally by chance - and I loved it! I’m a huge The Little Mermaid fan, and despite not usually accepting books events as canon, Ariel meeting Prince Eric when they’re both still kids is my new favorite headcanon! The story is super cute, and the illustrations are beautiful. I can totally see it happening, despite several people claiming that it conflicts with the events of the original movie. Also, what’s up with all those people who claim this book encourages kids to lie to their parents? I didn’t see any of that in it.
I wasn't sure how to rate this book but I finally decided on two stars for many reasons. I loved the idea of the book and of Ariel meeting Prince Eric when she was little but it didn't go with the movie at all. Never was there any indication in the movie that she had ever met him or seen him before she saw him on the ship. Also at the end it was mentioned that some day she would tell Eric she was the mermaid he met before but there is no way he would not have remembered her if he'd seen her before. I can't imagine he would have completely forgotten the face of a mermaid that he met when he was a child when they were thought not to exist. So overall I loved the idea of the story but it just didn't make a whole lot of sense when compared to the movie or some of the logic used in it. I probably wouldn't recommend it just because it doesn't go with the movie so if someone is looking for a book about The Little Mermaid this book would definitely be a disappointment to them.
Call me a nutcase-but I hated this book. After I read it the first time to my daughter (who chose it for herself at the library) I was disturbed by this idea a keeping a secret, disobeying her father, and that it was ok. Sorry I have issues with this theme of Disney book. It seemed to encourage a negative idea.
