I do not doubt that the book contains interesting, new theories, as well as the fundamentals of microbiology in an accessible form. Unfortunately the book is unreadable, for various reasons which I suspect are 1) the author is a non-native English speaker, and 2) the book was originally written in German.

It's written without all the nuances of the English language. Just to give a few examples: like the output of a Google Translate, the wrong words are used (e.g. Mostly accepted theories vs Almost accepted theories), sentences are abruptly short, and rhetorical questions sound more doubtful than rhetorical.

It pains me but I cannot continue reading bad prose and stilted language.

It's a quite interesting review of current genetics and virology, but this book has two serious problems:
- it's not a book in a particular way, it more a bunch of self-sufficient articles which are not connected directly to each other
- this book is not fit for absolute beginners, you better have at least one year course of virology, genetics or molecular biology because concepts are complex and there are a lot of special terms which are not known by typical people.

This is not necessarily a bad book, but I could not finish it. I think the biggest problem with this book is the lack of focus, and it does not seem like there was much in the way of editing. At a macro level, it seems as if this is two books blended into one, a memoir / collection of personal essays and a popular scientific book. This is compounded by a tendency on the part of the author to rapidly switch among a set of personal anecdotes, opinions, historical facts, seemingly apocryphal stories, only to then return to the subject of virology at varying technical levels. For a layperson interested in learning about virology and microbiology, I often felt either led away from understanding by a barrage of tangential paths or ambushed by confusing highly technical minutia.

I feel like there is a good book within this one, but it would need to be mined out of this one.
