“Your personal values are not just what you espouse. It’s how you behave and react in the face of temptation, under pressure, even when you know that no one else would know.”

The Habit of Winning by Prakash Iyer is a collection of short and simple stories, the ones that we’ve heard or seen for ourselves but did not seem to recognise them as valuable life lessons. I loved the collection of stories and more specifically, the orderly fashion in which the stories were classified and arranged in the book, taking us through a journey of “ viewing winning” as a process and not just an end result.

As an Indian B-School post-graduate and cricket follower, most of these stories were neither new or life changing in themselves, but more of a refresher to what I have previously read/ been taught/ heard but locked them from my active memory, just as I closed my case materials on getting my IIM Degree. My takeaway from this book is to always make the effort to retain what we learnt in the past because we will not know what will come in handy and in what phase while at the same time learning something new. Perhaps, this is what makes the habit of winning simple, but so difficult to practice.

This has been one of my favorites so far👍
The whole book is divided into 10 sections;
I)Vision and Goals
II)Self-Belief
III)Perseverance
IV)Winner's Mindsets
V)Giving
VI)Hard Work
VII)The Winner's Way
VIII)Winning With Teams
IX)Other People
X)Finding Balance
XI)Take Action
This book has remained with me for so many reasons:
*Real life examples based on the lives of sportsmen like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Steve Waugh and Mark Waugh, Irfan Pathan, Michael Phelps, Navjot Sidhu, Anil Kumble(my fav one👍), Atapattu, Robin Uthappa, Tyrone Bogues, Roger Bannister, Károly Takács
*Olympic heroes, examples from the real events from the life of the himself, some other personalities from different walks of life
*Some famous companies that are thriving today & the reasons behind
*Michelle Obama(do I need to say more?!)
*Other people that we don't think has much relevance
*Management & importance of working as a team
*Making a difference & 'eating that frog'
*How much is how much
*Comfort zone
*The great wall of China
*Gandhiji's one weird rule👌
Well, not much words have been written as such regrading such personalities or the topics mentioned, but the little that has been written on each is so powerful and meaningful that it is hard to neglect even a word.
The writing style is smooth, fast paced for a nonfiction book👍
It is enjoyable, short and engaging throughout.
Overall, it is a book for all kinds of people and for all ages.

I wouldn't have bought or read this book if I hadn't come across it at home. Mom bought it during one of her trips and now it takes up space on my bookshelf.

This book has nuggets of wisdom on vision, team management, hard work that are encapsulated within short stories or anecdotes from the author's life. These stories range from the field of sports, entertainment, corporate world etc.

There is nothing unique or different in the advice or the stories. Save for a few chapters where the stories get exciting and the advice makes you pause and ponder, most of it is passable.

This is one book you can skip reading.

"He has something that will plant seeds in your mind. Read it, follow what he has to say and those seeds will blossom into fine oaks" - Wrote Harsha Bhogle about this insightful book. There is no better way to describe it. I took interest in it with Harsha's comment & got reinforced when i saw it as the profile picture of a friend's FB account

Started glancing through the pages after a late breakfast on a sunday morning
Once i started reading, i couldn't stop. It was like spending a late morning and afternoon with an enlightened and honest Guru. This book is "No noise.. full Signal" type. Several parts of the book hit me hard on several aspects of my life i rationalized, and therefore settled for mediocrity. A refreshing read that it is, i didn't feel the heaviness of a self help book at any point.. A great milestone by Prakash Iyer. This book is one that can inspire millions to lead a better life

It's a very short collection of motivational stories. I was impressed by the story about "frog and scorpion".

Prakash Iyer's style is direct and simple. He has touched various aspects of life, with an emphasis on leadership.

Shining as an expert in a given profession is one thing; but more important is developing right attitudes and earning respect and affection from all the people we move with in day-to-day life. The simple techniques the author explains through his stories are sure to help us in both ways.

He begins with highlighting the primary need of formulating clear goals. Then gives confidence that every one of us is potentially a good leader. He encourages, "Never mind who you are or what you do; it is a good thing to remember that you are a leader too."

He describes a goal as a positive thought that would help us in replacing and banishing negative thoughts. I have come across many points of view on the need and importance of goals. From Prakash Iyer's book I have learnt this view - that a goal will entrenched in mind could work as a purifier by driving away negative thoughts - and I really value it.

There are several stories and narrations like 'Acres of diamonds', 'Tyrone Bogues', 'Robin Uthappa' etc, which serve as confidence-builders.

The author has really given an expert touch when he has explained the need for patience and understanding, through the peculiar growth-pattern of Chines Bamboo.

One more example is how the author has used a small imaginary story of a person blindly insisting on a shirt-size, to pinpoint the absurdity of having fixed ideas and rigid mindsets.

The author has convincingly emphasized the need for hard work, perseverance, judging the nature of others, team spirit, forming comprehensive views of the issues, and many other valuable traits of a successful person by means of gripping narrations.

This is an excellent book on Life and Leadership.

Simple and a quick read, The Habit of Winning is a collection of numerous anecdotes told by Prakash Iyer from his personal experiences. Each short story is accompanied by a message to take home. Overall it's a decent read, I felt it had too many small stories and hence too many lessons. Give it a try if you are in for a light read and also might want to learn a thing or two.

If you ever feel that you are in a constant rut , unable to paddle forward , this is the book you need to pick up. The author effortlessly ingrains the words of wisdom and inspiration through rich anecdotes and true stories , which is what makes this book an easy and interesting read. Of course , we have come across some of these stories and quotes of motivations in our lives that it might not seem anything new or out of the ordinary . But whenever you find yourself stuck and stagnant in life ,and in dire need of that voice to remind you - "you have got this!" , just read one of the stories in this book .

An average self-help book, it contains many stories or examples from prior books/works in the same field. Though the book is short and the chapters are not more than 3-4 pages long, but at many places the language gets redundant. Some of the examples are repeated twice and makes a boring effect on the reader.
Not a bad read, but there are many other better and smarter books available (Dale Carnegie and even our desi Shiv Khera should be tried) to enjoy this genre.

Very motivational and what I loved was that it gave several real-life examples. The one that stuck with me the most was of a young Anil Kumble wanting to play in a match despite a broken jaw as he did not want to return without trying his best.

Thói Quen Của Kẻ Thắng by Prakash Iyer

Iyer says “Play for the team, not for ourselves. Ignore our personal pain, and help the team’s cause” referring Anil Kumble bowling for India with a broken jaw. Putting your interests aside for the team seems to be the central theme across the book and the authors strong belief. If you don’t climb the ladder fast enough, quitting your job or changing teams is not the answer. Persevere, believe in yourself and stay put. Slog away, do a little extra.

He cites sports or vague stories (with morals) and presents an argument where the common man needs to put the company/team before himself. The author strongly projects one side of the argument well within entertaining the possibility of another side. The entire book seems to convey that a person needs to toil away without expecting much. It's all about perspective.

I can’t help but think if this naive way of thinking works after the turn of the century.

Everything needs to be in moderation. Sometimes it is good to persevere. At times, it’s good to move on. It is equally important to know when to stop as it is to know when to continue. The book would have been wholesome if it had been presented that way.

That said, this is an easy read with a chapter averaging out to 3 pages. The book has different themes and non-connecting inspiring stories to go with almost every chapter. Even though we can’t take the advice as gospel, reading the themes/highlights might help lift the spirits from time to time.

I might have appreciated had I been in a strong leadership role or was older. For now, this is not my cup of tea.

An extremely boring book (with an exception of maybe a handful of good/inspiring examples here & there). It’s ironical that the author talks of teamwork & finds the entire female gender unworthy of mention in his book. (Michelle Obama’s example is at best ‘lame’ since she has done a great deal more than just organise a dinner! That and the example of the fish on the beach - both seem to in fact be making a mockery of the true grit & resilience that women have portrayed all through the history of, ahem, “mankind”, including sports.) Never have I disliked a man and book so much from the about 10% into reading it.
.
What seems really hard to digest is that he could not find a single shining example of the female gender, even from the illustrious companies he has led - PepsiCo (its beyond understanding how he hasn’t cared to mention Indira Nooyi!!!), Mumbai Indians Franchise or his earlier company - Kimberly Clark (where their biggest consumer demographic is females!!!)
All the examples he has cited are men. And some are repetitive...
So clearly this book is categorically about MEN only.
Skip it by all means. There are way better books out there on the same topic.

This is hands down one of the best self-help books I've read. Prakash Iyer has mastered the art of teaching through storytelling, presenting bite-sized lessons wrapped in relatable analogies and real-life examples. Whether it's cricket matches, business scenarios, or everyday observations, he transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary insights. The book reads like conversations with a wise mentor rather than theoretical lectures.
This was my first Prakash Iyer book, and I'm thoroughly impressed. The stories are memorable and inspire action long after you finish reading. I will highly recommend this to anyone seeking practical wisdom over corporate jargon. This is definitely one I'll reread multiple times, discovering new meaning each time. Perfect for anyone who believes in continuous self-improvement.

The book has quite insightful anecdotes from the author's own experience. For example, how the Rin-Nirma war was won by redefining the game(Wheel) rather than blaming the sales team; how new managers grow by being 'lime'(adding zing) but later should be like sugar to a cup of milk(adding value, blending in, touching everyone and leaving an impact); and need to bait a fish with worms rather than chocolate. Also, we should know who packs our parachute and whose parachute we pack.
Also, do not just build the Great Wall(KKR, Great Wall of China/ERP system) but also take along people(team/guards/process owners-change-champions)

This book follows the age old story and moral of the story pattern to impart leadership wisdoms. You will also find some fascinating stories about life in general and the author finishes the book with a sweet notice on "Do it now" motive.

There are some parts in the book where the author contradicts his own statement. In the last chapter, he advises to grind and sweat at work and not leave at 5:30 if you are aiming for promotion but in the very next chapter, he says "no one has said i wished i spent more time in the office" in their death bed. I get the essence is that you win some and lose some but the example he chose did not fit the need.

Other than this, i found the book to be a great read and would advise anyone looking for seeds of leadership examples to give this book a shot!

“The Habit of Winning” offers a commendable endeavor to motivate individuals who aspire to excel in their respective niches. However, it's important to acknowledge that not everyone may resonate with its content. The book showcases remarkable real-life stories, leaving it up to the reader to perceive them as either ordinary or extraordinary. While drawing inspiration from true stories is not a novel concept, there are a few narratives within this book that genuinely impart valuable lessons on leadership and personal growth.
This book can serve as a suitable starting point for beginners embarking on their journey towards excellence.

The Habit Of Winning is by Prakash Iyer. which is blissful to read after exactly 10 years ago read by@harish.reads

The habit of winning is a motivational novel that can change the way you think, work, live and feel.

This book is divided into 10 sections;

1- Vision and goals

2- Self-Belief

3- Perseverance

4- Winner's Mindsets

5- Giving

6- Hard work

7- The Winner's Way

8- Winning With Teams

9- Other People

10- Finding Balance

11- Take Action

My Favourite Section is, "Giving" and "Self-Belief".

It is the collection of short stories which actually motivates you and pull you up and tells you that there is a scope of a better life which you dreamed of you just need to keep self-belief. This book is too good for your mental health because of its some truly based story examples.

I learnt and gained many things from this book. This book broaden my thought process towards the perspective continuity towards my goals for life.

The Habit Of Winning is not just about winning. It is also about finding yourself and balanced life, being happy and making a difference for yourself and the life you dream about.

Overall good inspiring read..

Sinha, Michelle Obama, Jack Ma, Karoly Takacs, Tyrone Bogues, Sachin Tendulkar etc put together to inspire, motivate and unleash the winner within. It shows you a bigger picture and how the little things matter within it.

There is no secret formula for winning , it is a habit that one acquires in due course of one's life. But to keep oneself motivated and oriented one must have a hanger to hold on. This book serves this purpose. Moreover the book not only contains mere philosophy or guideline but shares personal anecdotes, experiences and inspirational stories. All in all it keeps the readers attached to itself and never put him off the track.
