Anya's Lyric is a different read - in terms of story, the protagonist and writing style.

It was thoughtful, interesting and unpredictable. But, unconventional format of this book made it a little confusing and difficult. Characters have no names - just an identity. Chapters are randomly placed that I needed to recall what I had read previously. Sometimes, it seemed like a collection of (interlinked) short stories. At times, it felt exciting, but most of the times this recalling thing was confusing and annoying. Frankly speaking, I needed to concentrate as I tried to connect the dots.

It was a nice but definitely not a light read.

Anya’s Lyric is the journey of a girl who the world sees as a misfit but never hesitates to exploit for their benefit. This book is like a collection of stories but each is linked to the next as a part of Anya’s life.
The author has done a commendable job of writing the book and not mentioning the names of each character. “The man with one hand, the magician, the strange man, the ordinary man, the woman with a mole on her left cheek – the characters have been described but not named. I love the aura of mystery it gave to the stories. The way we describe strangers for all these were strangers as I followed Anya’s journey. These strangers were a part of her life, affecting her yet staying on the periphery.

I was pleasantly surprised when I picked this book, I was not aware of the author Nikhil Kumar but I am so glad I found his book. Anya’s Lyric has been a refreshingly different read for me. It is by no means a time pass or rushed read, the book, her story and the characters and emotions expressed made me take notice and appreciate the subtle twists in the book.

The writing is excellent, fluid and kept me engrossed and I enjoyed the book in spite of the harsh truths it presents. It gives the reality of life, of how we each look out for ourselves ignoring the consequences and the collateral damage. I cannot say much about the stories except praise the way the author has linked them. A mother’s loss, a lover’s betrayal, a wife’s deceit as well as a thief, a woman, a child, a daughter, a magician, a man with the tattoo – all of them and more feature within the pages of this book.

The initial pages threw me off since the blurb gives no indication of the surprise I found within the chapters of how the story is linked and moved forward. However by the second chapter I was reading and re-reading passages. Anya’s thoughts, her inability and her helplessness tugged at my heart. The final chapter healed the wounds but the scars remain – sad but such is our world.

The book deals of the fate of the differently able yet it is not sad or condescending. I found the writing crisp, impactful and thought provoking. The boy with the twisted leg was such masterful linking as was the one about the gold chains. I often wonder who has lost or left these things we find, why they have been abandoned, are they missed by the owner… when I find fallen money or a bottle, toy or pen left behind in a train, room, office, park etc. The author has given such compelling reasons and linked papers, biscuits, even gold in Anya’s Lyrics to weave a book like a beautiful tapestry. Anya’s Lyric is an emotional and engrossing read.

‘I was born because of one man’s inability to read.’ Nikhil could not have begun his book better. Everything that this petite book impressed me with is contained in its opening lines. The causality behind events which drive the story; the characters ordinary yet significantly identifiable by a singular trait; the narration personal, heartfelt and sad. Like this man and his ‘inability to read’, who is nameless yet has played a pivotal part in giving birth to none other than our narrator - Anya.

‘Anya’s Lyric’ is a collection of fast-moving, very gripping events happening to an array of characters, with the various threads eventually and sometimes surprisingly crisscrossing each other. Like synapses in the brain! Those points of meeting, often between unrelated characters or unconnected events, help stitch Anya’s story into one patchwork quilt. Very symbolic of how a ‘special’ mind such as Anya's works and talks, wouldn’t you say? Trying to maintain eye contact but almost always failing to. Trying to converge to and thus convey one idea but through many, not entirely insignificant, diversions.

Anya’s story, like the many others which meet it, is replete with a dreariness – a primal monotony of sadness featuring men and women we see every day; people on the road, in the fruit market, along railway lines, in temple queues, ‘dreaming of a better life’. Which makes the characters ordinary. Yet, Nikhil doesn’t let them enjoy their facelessness. By endowing each with a story of his/her own which in turn feeds his protagonist’s story, the author gives them a spotlight which an onlooker at a red light doesn’t care to. A lot of them have no names but most of them have been given something which makes them momentarily stand out in our universal studio of reality.

The role of language in portraying Anya’s mind was an important one. Even keeping all the stories tight and cleverly connected required craft (and craftiness). Nikhil Kumar has managed both well. However, the book ends itself hastily, with an enigmatic scene in a shack on a beach, highly interpretative in all its vagueness and mystery but lost in effect if seen for just what it is.

This book is like ‘that part of town where the social rejects make their home’. You see how everyone is significant, yet no one is. How depravity is universal yet misery individual. And also how while ugliness is a constant in this needy-greedy world sitting on a social fabric full of holes, special souls like Anya just ‘sang my song through it all’.

It is Anya’s Lyric, after all, and it must be heard.

My Ratings: 4/5
Plot – 4/5
Characters – 3.5/5
Style – 3.5/5
Climax – 3/5
Cover Page – 2/5

Cover Page Review: - Subtle, dreamy and beautiful. The cover page depicts more of uplifting storyline without a major shadow on the protagonist. Anya’s Lyric is the shadow of a Protagonist in real sense. Hence the author could have made a more thoughtful cover page if not totally difficult one.

Storyline Review: - This is a language game. From the starting to the end the author has played an amazing game with outline of the character, the events of the stories, the drama and the melodrama. I must give it to Nikhil’s play of thoughts. None of the characters have a name in the book except for Anya. Yet author has beautifully created an epitome of rich literary sense of the situation and just when he was to give away the real meaning of the writeup, he left it open. That is the best part of the entire story line. The way he has elaborated on Anya’s happiness, love, hatred and rebellious mood, the way Anya looked at issues to handle her thought, her father, the rapist, the attempt to the cruelty – artistic. The style he has adopted has made an addictive attempt for the reader to stick to the book and turn the pages till the last. The writing looks complicated but understanding does not, it gives the reader a space to think of the situation. This is a simple yet different form of literature all together.

There are few places where the author has almost lost track and suddenly moved on to the next character. Since the characters did not have names, it becomes important to put the effort of relating the actions to the characters.

On the whole, this is a recommendable good read for me and has definitely been a touching experience.

SOME SOUL-SEARCHING LYRIC
Have you thought how life comes to a full circle? Most of us are unaware of it – unless, we are witnesses to somebody else's. Mr. Kumar has given us, the readers, this privilege of being that witness. Anya, one of God's special children, experiences many situations which a girl of her age should never face.
All the short stories are related to Anya and all start with a character from one of the previous stories. Might look random at first but as you go on you can but not admire the author’s mind in weaving such a labyrinth. The characters of the stories, some related to Anya and others leaving their mark on her, are the ones who act as mirrors to our society and make us feel humble as we reflect upon our blessed life.

The story of Anya
The story of Anya does not start with her birth. But it starts when a woman, not at all related to her, is left by her lover. That triggers a chain of reaction which leads to the birth of Anya.
Without a backward glance, she walked away in the darkness to a destination only she knew, unsure of what the next day would bring. At the stroke of midnight, she turned sixteen.
And as she turned sixteen, Anya is born somewhere else.
While reading the story, many things came to my mind. Is Anya just a simple girl or is she the broken representation of our society? Does her experience not relate to our morally dying society which is every day murdered, raped and plundered by many selfish people? Is Anya not in each one of us as we lay whimpering in pain when we are attacked, unable to retaliate or we consider ourselves weak? For me, Anya became our society and each character was someone I knew or may be, to some extent, a part of me.

The journey
Anya must have grown up a bit when she saw her dog lying dead on the driveway, whose life she had chocked out. But her half brain never questions why she and the father both had bloodstains on their hands. She grew up a bit more when her young heart fell in love with the boy with twisted legs. She again grew up when her father died. And again, when she had her first orgasm. She grew up a bit more when she was raped and she reached to her full potential when the responsibility of another life was thrust upon her. A responsibility which she took up willingly. This is the story of Anya for you.

Intrinsically woven characters
Have we not met many strangers in your journeys? All of us, at the same spot, at the same time; and then branching out to different areas of our lives? Do we think of those strangers again? Do they leave an impact in our lives – sometimes knowingly and sometimes fate intervened? Mr.Kumar is a weaver of such strangers who don't know each other yet leave an impact in each of the life. A small pink envelope that started its journey in a small town travels to its destination, without the knowledge of the travelers. That was the best thing I loved about the story. When the pink envelope finally reaches its rightful owner, its empty yet it's so symbolic, like a mockery that life does to people when in pain.

Hard-hitting truth
The author is very adept at using words to bring out some hard-hitting truth. Not a man to mince words definitely. He wants to paint the darker side of life and he has done a wonderful job with this. From shady places to shady characters – he has shown us the true image of humans without even lifting an accusing finger. A man, a loving father of a teenager who goes to the seedy accomplishments to rape a young girl. A man who loves his own child yet has a heart of a demon when he crawls the side lanes of the seedy part of the town. And he is just one man. God knows how many such men exist in our society.

The Growing of Anya
Not in one place will you find Anya weak. She calls herself half brain and is often shown as a girl in rags. But her spirit is strong and that of a fighter. She won’t let you feel sorry for her yet make you cry at her pain. And laugh at her antics. Every time an irony of life passes her, you want to give her a nudge to go after it and at the same time protect her when she is faced with the masked duplicity.
It was almost evening when I felt a hand on my shoulder and a warm voice talk to me. “Sister,” said the voice. “Are you all right?”
This is what a woman can do to a woman.

The Language and writing of the Author
Is what turns this novel into a page-turner. You can rest assured that this novel will leave an impact on you. One of those novels which deserves a shelf space in your home. The writing is crisp and even while dealing with a very painful subject, the author has not let go of the humor. No characters have been named, (I wonder why) yet you will not confuse the characters. Their traits are their names. A man with a tattoo, the boy with a twisted leg and a woman with a mole. Without even naming them, he has drawn each character, with his words. Only Anya is a name we follow. Like those pictures where everything is black and white and only the main subject is colored. Beautiful.

“I was born because of one man’s inability to read.”

The starting line of Nikhil Kumar’s fourth publication, Anya’s Lyric, somehow, was able to send me a vibe that this book is going to be unusual. And, when I finished the whole of 169 pages in one go, my belief on my intuition was once more firmly reinstated.

Anya (meaning ‘different’) is the saga of a girl who is destined to be different from the day of her birth. Born on the 29th of February, she appears to have followed a stringent routine in a different way. The routine she hates most, the routine her father, the man with the one arm, follows and makes her succumb to it.

Anya is not only different, she is ‘special’. She is that kind of ‘special’ a part of the society still makes fun of, schools arrange extra classes, and who suffers a silent agony failing the ability to synchronise thoughts with their verbal outcome.

So, when Anya’s father hits her, she wants to say,“I hate you”, but ends up humming a tune she had picked up from some television show and, cries profusely. Nikhil has depicted the helplessness, the psychological turmoil of such children impeccably. The reader can almost feel the palpable anguish of the retarded brain.

Minimalist Narrative Technique

From the very beginning of the story, Nikhil has created an atmosphere that emanates a bleak, dark air. Even when the girl with a ‘mole on her left cheek’ makes love with her boyfriend, this heavy air hovers around. Nikhil’s narrative style has made this apprehension possible. A minimalist narrative technique has helped him to achieve this tension and suspense. The story is in no way a thriller, but you won’t be able to put it down till you reach the last page. Equanimity of situations, most ordinary characters, deadpan narrative and impassive, recalcitrant narrators together have done the magic.

The rape scene goes like this,

“on the far room on the right of a long corridor, the man who smelled like milk just finished raping a forgotten thirteen-year-old girl who wore braces on her teeth.”

Nothing more has been said and the ‘less’ speaks a volume. It says how insignificant the life of the little girl is and, that the man has done this abominable act many times before!

Stories Inside The Story

None of the characters in the story has a name. It’s specifically Anya’s lyric and only she has been given the honour to have a name of her own. Still, the characters become successful to paint myriad of pictures in the reader’s mind. They are nameless, but not faceless. They have their own typical characteristics.

Several plots and characters appear in the first few chapters with no apparent connection between them. Each of them has their own tale and, the narrator keeps on telling the stories from a neutral point of view. The characters, of course, are pre-destined to intersect each other’s lives and evidently the pieces of the puzzle fall somewhat in places.

Only Anya tells her story in the first person. As the protagonist, she enjoys this virtue. Her haggard life with the father she hates tremendously, her feelings as she experiences her first orgasm, her apparently fragile yet indomitable spirit- Nikhil has delved deep under the girl’s soul.

—————————————

There are graphical descriptions in a few places making the reader visualize the scene.

“A stray plastic bag floated up like a low budget ghost and flew towards her, carried forward by an invisible gust of imperceptible wind. It wrapped itself around her ankles and stayed there until she kicked it away.”

A simple, mundane scene has come alive. I find this quality pretty absorbing in any writing.

However, there are a couple of loose knots in the end as the story ends a bit nimbly. Anya finds her composure suddenly. But, perhaps, it’s the survival instinct that dawns upon her when she needs it most. Her disjointed, hazy, mind asks the question, “Why am I so different from other people?” and, the answer comes as, “Because you’re the only one who wants to know the answer to that question,”

We all are unique and different in our own ways. But, no, we never ask this question. Perhaps, that is Anya’s realization, her life, her lyric.

Anya’s Lyric was a riveting read for me. I recommend it to all who like to experience a ‘different’ kind of writing and want to have a relief from the mushy love stories.

Anya’s Lyric is one of the most compelling pieces of literature I came across in my years of reading. Nikhil Kumar’s storytelling was captivating from beginning to end. I loved how the author created multiple vivid stories that correlated with each character in the book, including the main character Anya.

This story exemplifies the reality that everyone has a story to tell. I was amazed and delighted of how beautifully written the story was. Even through violence, the story was shared in a poetic way that will leave the reader turning the pages for more.

The author’s powerful imagery through his words will draw you into the lives of the characters. I found myself in awe of the complexity and authenticity of the characters in Anya’s Lyric. I experienced every emotion possible while reading this story. I was happy, sad, disgusted, and hopeful. It’s surprising that I experienced so many emotions in just a short time frame while reading this small book. That just goes to show that the author is very talented in concise and creative writing.

The plot was engaging and full of unexpected twists and turns. The author rewards the reader with every turn of the page by sharing a vivid detail that the reader would never thought would happen. I admire the well-crafted intertwine of the stories that was unique and refreshing.

In the world of literature, seldom do I come across a book like Anya’s Lyric.

Anya’s Lyric will definitely be the book that will stand out from the rest of books I’ve previously read and the books I will be going to read in the future.

I have always been fascinated by how our lives are so much governed by happenstances and serendipity. We meet so many people, many of whom just brush past our life while some appear again and again and become a part of it.

Anya’s life begins with a girl’s letter to her mother, a girl who is ashamed to come home because of failure and shame of what she has done, and it took three days for the letter to reach her mother because of one man’s inability to read. The book throws many memorable characters at you. None of the characters have a name. They are always referred to as ‘the man with one arm’, ‘the ordinary man’, ’the boy with a twisted leg ’, ‘the magician’, ‘the tall woman with full red lips’ and so on. It’s a unique way of storytelling and it works beautifully. The theme of the book is dark and it is not a very verbose book. That I think is another achievement where the author is able to hook a reader with a few lines.

I have always been a fan of non-linear narration. Nikhil Kumar’s novel is an example of how to use the technique effectively. The book takes you on a journey where multiple unique story points are introduced one by one without telling the reader how and when they will converge. This creates an aura of intrigue as this beautiful story unfolds. At the end, I wished there was more of the book.

Anya’s Lyric is one book which should be read and appreciated for its intricate and minimalistic storytelling.

A simple book with lot of tragedies but with a positive outcome in the end. What was really special about this book is the specific mention of just 1 character - ANYA.

You read it right. Apart from the main character Anya on whose life the story revolves, all the other characters were mentioned with their bodily reference like Man with a Snake Tattoo, one-armed postman, boy with a twisted leg etc to name a few,

You may now wonder as to how the author has managed to pen down a novel with just one name which is the beauty of this book. On an ill-fated day, the one-armed postman failed to deliver a letter and that had led to lot of consequences including losing the job. There weren't any suspense or thriller or twists and turns in this book but it had still managed to keep up the interest on me being the reader, from the beginning till the end which is what i would say is the real specialty of the book and the author.

Anya's goes through lot of hardships. There were betrayals. There was love. There was greed. There was physical abuse. There was hope. All these together were mixed in a perfect blend which has resulted in the outcome of this novel.

Read this to find out more. Do spread the word among your family members and friends too :-)

I loved reading this novella and it can easily be read in about an hour. It is so complex, yet simple, and it's hauntingly beautiful too. I couldn't stop reading. Although it's about a girl's life, it has other people's story intertwined, just how our real lives are intertwined with others. Have you ever passed a stranger in the street and wondered what happened next? That's what this story is all about, and the story goes full-steam ahead and makes a circuitous route back to Anya, the sweet girl who seemed to have been born to the wrong parents. It conveys the message that we are all one and each and every one of us has the potential to change someone's life. There is one scene where I was literally so mesmerized that I lost every sense of my surroundings and I haven't done that for a while. After I was done reading this book, it seemed like I read a full 75k novel instead of a 100 page novella. Yes, it had that much impact on me. Kumar is a talented author and I look forward to more of his work!

*Warning* - this story contains a scene or two of explicit sexual content that may offend some readers. The scenes are short and are written to simply tell the story and in no way does the author write it just for shock value. It is part of Anya's story.

Sometimes when you read something, it stays with you for a while longer. Both to ruminate it and then process it. The longer you sink into it the more mystic it turns out to be. To me this book came across as that; mystical yet linked together in a very mysterious manner leaving a profound impact on the reader.

There are very few books that compel you to think, to delve deeper. This novel begins that right at the start and takes you through a series of events linked together hooking you till the end. At times it may seem a bit confusing but that's the beauty of it, reading between the lines.

The novel sticks to the main character Anya, exploring life through her eyes, through her memories. What I liked the most was, even though there were multiple characters none of them crowded the space, the book at the crux was Anya's story and it remained that till the very end. The non-usage of other character names but depicting them by their features, profession et al. was ingenious.

Easy to read, and absolutely enjoyable.

Loved the way the novel goes and how many storylines go simultaneously. It makes you think more and gives a special aura to the book itself.
Anya’s story is unique but meanwhile it teaches us that we all have a story to share, our lives are indeed, unique.
I loved how deep it was and meanwhile so easy to read, it makes you think and relax simultaneously, a thing that so few books nowadays provide. I loved it from the first to last page, I love reality much more than imaginary worlds, so to have the unique chance to experience the reality inside a book is a very unique experience for anyone, I loved everything, and for those who are aware of the explicit content, don’t worry, it is not too much and absolutely necessary to send a clear message.

Give this book a try and I guarantee you, you’ll never regret it.

The protagonist’s name in the title has been done innumerable times in way too many books. I was initially not too impressed with it because it wasn’t imaginative enough. But then I found a Deep Purple song with the same name. Some lines matched Anya’s (of the book) spirit. I don’t know if the author has consciously chosen this title thus, but this song sure added spark to it. This is line from the song that I loved the most (and thought that it matched with the protagonist’s spirit)
“A hidden passion touching a spark
Flame of revolution burning wild in your gypsy heart
Oh your gypsy heart
Anya Anya the spirit of freedom
Anya Anya ooh Anya”

Anya's Lyric is a beautifully written novel that takes you into the world of a developmentally disabled girl in India. As you read the novel you see the world through her eyes and experience both her pains and triumphs alongside her.

In addition to a story line that totally draws you in, Nikhil Kumar's writing is delightful and unique, yet completely capturing. He sheds light on issues that impact the most underserved in society, yet are often overlooked.

I loved this book and hope to see a sequel!

A very different way of narrating a story linking different characters of different time period and regions, different age, religion, from rich to poor. the only connecting element is the letter which the postman couldn’t read. I am sure it must have been challenging for the author to write a story in perspective of a girl who is mentally challenged. it the correlations and pieces of the story which makes it gripping to read.

Every word is a kind of clue or a revelation of something that was happening before us with Anya, where sometimes I do feel uncomfortable and at times vulnerable in a timeless book that seems to perfectly reflect the reality that even now girls live with a novel that touches ethical and psychological issues that drive us to reflect on the value of life and the courage to put an end to those that troubles us even if it means to hurt sometimes those who love us.

The book opens with the line—“I was born because of one man’s inability to read.” What could have been a better opening line for such a wonderful book that is unique in its concept and characterisation. Yes, it has an array of characters which have no name in the entire book. Anya is the only one whose name is revealed by the author. Read the review here: http://www.ilagarg.com/2016/09/anyas-...

The book was a great sarcastic account at places to show what is really behind the cloak. The small topics that were brought up were so serene that I almost felt like a part of the book. Only and only a little more brushing was needed here and there to make the tale a whole lot smoother and shiny, in order to reach a wider set of audience.

Knowing Nikhil as a blogger, having read his previous Where are my pants, I bought this book. Loved the mystery that is ever present. Kept me wondering how all the characters will tie up, wonderful tactic of not naming anyone but Anya. A special child's journey yet not in a condescending way. Just a beautiful weaving of the various characters into a story that sure reads like a lyric!

The story is good in chapters but not as a complete story. You feel confused and distracted moving from one chapter to another. Despite the fact being a short novel, as it got confused in between, I had to give it 4days to complete. I liked author Nikhil Kumar’s writing and narration style. I found the story to be simple but written in a very complex way.
