Reach: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone, Rise to the Challenge and Build Confidence

Rate this book
Do you feel comfortable delivering bad news? Do you look forward to speaking in public? Do you enjoy networking? Is it easy for you to speak your mind and be assertive with friends and colleagues? If you answered no to any of these questions, this book can help!

What often sets successful people apart is their willingness to do things most of us fear. What’s more, we have the false notion that successful people like to do these things, when the truth is that successful people have simply found their own way to do them.

According to Andy Molinsky, an expert on behavior in the business world, there are five key challenges underlying our avoidance authenticity, competence, resentment, likability, and morality. Does the new behavior you’re attempting feel authentic to you? Is it the right thing to do? Answering these questions will help identify the “gap” in our behavioral style that we can then bridge by using the three C’ Clarity, Conviction, and Customization. Perhaps most interesting, Molinsky has discovered that many people who confront what they were avoiding come to realize that they actually enjoy it, and can even be good at it.

Short, prescriptive, and based not only on the author’s groundbreaking research but on his own quest to get out of his comfort zone, Reach will help you take the thing you are most afraid of doing and make it a proud part of your personal repertoire.

I'm having mixed feelings about this book. First the positives. Easy-read, small book with simple language definitely aid in finishing this book soon. The reasons why people don't step out of their comfort zones were definitely engaging. Conviction and Clarity were thoroughly authentic and I could relate to them intimately.

Although you can use the 3-C's mentioned in the book in any walk of your life, many of the examples given were 'work-related', narrowing the scope of the book. I've read a couple other books related to this topic and I did not find many "Eureka!!" moments in the book. For example, Switch by Chip and Dan Heath gives some excellent pointers on how to welcome/put forth change and follow it through.

This book is about how to get outside your comfort zone but it’s also about something bigger: how to adjust your own behavior without losing yourself in the process. When we lack a skill in an area, it can impact our success. And when we’re not good at something—and we’re fully truthful with ourselves—we often deride those who embody the asset we want, rather than bust out of our own safety zone to try to improve. How many times have you heard someone (or yourself) say: “I can’t do sales—I’m not a cheesy car salesman.” Or “I’ll never be an executive, I’ll have to kiss too much #@!”

It’s easy to hold resentment for others who have what we want. And it’s also a total cop out freeing oneself from personal responsibility for change and transformation. And while this book doesn’t address our resentment for others who hold what we desire, it does clearly articulate ways we can change—ways that are digestible and entirely doable. In fact, they’re so subtle yet effective it’s embarrassing no one’s addressed these before now.

Behavioral change can be important on two fronts: 1) Our personal effectiveness and success and 2) Our ability to get along, collaborate and create with others—despite our differences.

What is so powerful about this book is that when we can see that we don’t necessarily need to make a wholesale change in who we are to be more effective—that it can be as simple as a few go-to statements or physical behaviors choicefully delivered—perhaps we can let go of the animosity we hold for others. Or maybe we could just plain admire them for the gifts they have that we can learn from. This would be a really great thing—for our workplaces, and for our world.

Reach is chock full of useful stories and examples—of real people, just like you and me. I wished I would have had this book early in my career. I would have been able to see that I can change, I can become more effective, and it doesn’t require that I morph into someone or something wholly different. All I must do is try.

If I could give this book 2.5 stars I would but do not believe it merits 3 stars. There are some good insights in this books but unfortunately it lacks diverse real world examples to illustrates these these insights. Instead, the examples are a bit fluffy along with there being too few examples in general. The relevant information could have been portrayed in 25-50 pages because throughout the book he continues to reference the same recycled examples to illustrate the challenges and solutions.

After reading this book, it was clear the author is an academic who lacks the real world "chops". You may have a different opinion if you consider consider giving speeches to businesses and being a university professor "real world experience". That said, I would recommend reading this book to someone who is facing one of the small number of challenges discussed in this book.

Nice and clear writing about doing challenging things. Why we resist, how we avoid, and how we can get past the difficulties to grow out of old constraints and into new comfort zones.
My rating function on the goodreads app is not functioning, I give this 4 stars/recommend.

I'm lucky enough to have an advanced copy of this book from the publisher, and I just finished reading it. As an academic, this book rang true for me on a number of fronts-- Molinsky's story of rising above various sources of self-doubt in this hyper competitive and critical career felt very familiar- and his described desire to continue to challenge oneself to learn and grow really resonated with me. I enjoyed the anecdotes and examples about people's struggles and successes with getting outside their comfort zone too. I also liked the unique, practical nature of the book. That is, it felt like more of a work book of sorts than a casual read, the exact type of book likely to be very helpful to working MBA students or others seeking a change in their career. Reach lightly engages with research and plenty of examples to make the concepts clear and applicable to a wide range of people looking for a concrete plan to become a more confident person at work and/or home. I believe it will help a lot of people looking to do exactly that.

Reach is a business-oriented book that meets its goal of teaching the reader how to step outside their comfort zone.

I felt the introduction was longer than necessary, which worried me about the rest of the book. However, once I hit the main chapters I found a lot of value in this book.

Molinsky does a great job offering multiple strategies and plenty of real-world examples. My favorite chapter was the one about customizing your own way of performing a task that makes you uncomfortable.

Anyone who feels like a fraud in their current position or has taken on a new role they are nervous about will find something helpful in this book.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Won't it be beautiful if we had a yardstick to measure our comfort zone? For example, we have to give a talk tomorrow and there was a criteria that could tell us the limit to which we could stretch ourself and yet feel comfortable. The catch here is, if we have to make an impact we'll have to stretch so much so as to break the shakles of our comfort zone. There are thousands of books written on the topic but this little gem of a book tells us to do it in a measured and systematic way. There aren't many people who convince us to fool ourselves, Andy Molinsky in this book does exactly that, and quite effectively too 😊

Poorly organized and lacked insight

This book did not prove helpful in providing actionable strategies for approaching challenging situations. The author's decision to include moral objections as something that was an obstacle to optimal performance was especially unsettling.

This book looks into the topic of a comfort zone through behavior flexing. The author explores challenges/ fears that keep us in a comfort zone; how do we avoid these challenges/fears; and what we can do about it. He also addresses that for order to a behavior to stick we need to customize it to our own personality, take small steps even when we failing, and while failing remember that it’s not about an attack on personality it’s about learning.

Ex: think and write down a situation you want to get out of your comfort zone. Assess psychological challenges you experience. Score statements: 1. Competence challenge- I am not very good at performing the task at this situation. I don’t feel confident performing this task. 2. Authenticity: this behavior feels unnatural to me. I don’t feel genius performing this behavior. 3. Resentment: I feel it is unfair that I have to accommodate my behavior in this situation. I feel resentful that I have to change my style.4. Likability: I worry about people won’t like me when I change my behavior to accompanate this situation. I worry I will turn people off when I change my behavior to this situation. 5. Morality challenge: I have serious concerns about morality of this behavior. When I perform this behavior I worry if I have been ethical.
Ex What are your avoidance challenges? Remember avoiding limit your growth. Common strategies: 1. Avoid the task entirely. 2. Do the task only part way. 3. Procrastinate 4. Pass the buck and get someone else to do it
Ex Unlock your potential of conviction? Why you should take a leap? 1. Respect. Doing this behavior will make me look good in other people eyes. Doing this behavior will own the respect of a particular person.(score-) 2. Skill development: doing this behavior will help me to develop the skills I currently don’t have. Doing this behavior will help me to approve my existing skill. 3. Career advancement: doing this behavior will increase my chances of promotion. Doing this behavior will help me to move in career ladder. 4. Boosting yourself esteem: doing this behavior will make me proud of myself. Doing this behavior will boost my self esteem. 5. Helping others: doing this behavior will help me to contribute to the cause I care about. Doing this behavior will help to make the difference in others life.

Ex. Customize your behavior- 1. Your dialogue( fee comfortable and natural, learn catching phrases) 2. Body language (poster, smile, eyes, voice, walking) 3. Timing: ( when occurs, pacing- after exercise - energy) 4. Props: (power suit, something makes you forages, bring notes)5. The context (your position or role eg bring a supportive college to a network event)
Developing clarity in your believes and thinking. Ask and listen to other people of views. Focus on realistic thinking.

I think this is a pretty comprehensive guide on how to navigate your comfort zone and if you are new to doing so, it could be a really great read. It is pretty well researched and I think a lot of the references to psychology were interesting.

On the other hand, I found a lot of the personal examples he used uninteresting and useless as I usually do in books. Like I honestly don't care if Annie or whatever was too afraid to stand up to her coworker who was being an ashole. Too much sometimes cringy blah blah about this person or that person or himself failing to be functional in situations that were somehow hard for them because of xyz. Some of this is honestly basic social advice for uncoordinated introverts to try to learn how to have confidence in themselves. I'd say it was a decent read and rated it 3 stars because he repeats a ton and probably could have made the book like 100 pages and cut out half of it.

The last chapter of the book was nice though for sure. 22 pages of practical questions and space for directly applying what I just learned into my life. How helpful! I wish every book had this so I didn't feel the need to have to annotate it myself to get the most important stuff out of it and actually be able to do something with it. Practicality in my opinion is half the reason you should consider a book in the first place (well also having the capability of gaining different perspectives and becoming more knowledgeable from it are important too). Would save a lot of time otherwise wasted on boring pointless trash that I don't care about. But then again I guess that's what online reviews and summaries are for.

work read.
can't say I 'really' liked it, but nothing to dislike.
some decent advice. essentially: everyone struggles getting out of their comfort zones, so try little strategies to get out of yours without feeling bad about the inevitable failures. etc.

interesting things:
- self-talk (in 3rd person is statistically better for you, p 136)
- Carol Dweck: fixed vs growth mind-sets. (failures as evidence of innate limitations vs part of learning process) p 194
- Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: sweet-spot/'flow': when performing a task - "losing track of time, not thinking or worrying about yourself, and being fully immersed in what you're doing" p 219

* Competence/Authenticity/Resentment/Likeability/Morality challenges
* How we avoid: entirely, partway, procrastinate, pass-buck
* Conviction: Respect/Skill Development/Career Advancement/Self-Esteem boost/Helping Others
* Customize Behavior (things you can control): Your Dialogue (adjust actual words)/Body Language/Timing/Props/The Context
* Clarity Development: Worst case vs Best case vs Realistic thinking

5 predictable reasons why people don’t like moving outside of their comfort zone: authenticity, likeability, competence, resentment, and morality.
He talks about finding your scaffolding – the thing that helps you deal; it can even be a lucky charm, practise, bribery – you’ll know what works for you.
And of course, once you do that awful scary thing, you might discover that it was far less scary than you thought OR that you like it.

The library app won’t let me download this although it insists I have borrowed it. Oh wait… I can listen on the webpage… but in order to stop my ADHD brain from clicking off somewhere I have to pull out the colouring in books. There you go, brain. Sit. Stay!
Hmmm… this is a little bit basic but then again, I have read a pile of non fic lately.
Moses had a speech defect… [What? I could do without him as an example of someone who was afraid of public speaking, really…]

The author recommends taking drugs (xanax but still) and drinking (scotch and vodka are good because they don't really leave a smell behind) before giving a presentation at work, or before other stressful situations in the workplace. LOL. And he is NOT saying this in jest. Which doesn't take away from the fact that it's hilarious.
Also, I'm no expert, but should people really be mixing drugs and booze? Not to mention in the workplace? That sounds like a bad idea, anywhere, anytime. Having said that, it could make work meetings/presentations given by coworkers more interesting/entertaining, but omg. This guy and his advice. Wow. Classic.
Possible alternate title: Xanax and Vodka: A New Strategy to Help You Step Outside Your Comfort Zone! (And possibly die.)

The cliched saying is that all the good stuff happens outside your comfort zone. But stepping outside of a comfort zone is...well... uncomfortable. This book goes beyond motivational platitudes and tries to develop a strategy to "make it stick." Essentially, embrace the feeling of being uncomfortable with new situations as a signal that this is where personal growth can - and probably will - occur. Think of why this matters to you, to uncover your personal convictions.

The important thing to remember is that it's not just about taking the first leap, but also creating the conditions around us that help solidify this behavior, and help us maintain a "growth mindset."

The book reads easy and is straight to the point with personal examples of the message being conveyed. It provides a solid foundation to determine the main reason(s) you might avoid doing an activity outside your comfort zone; and practical solutions to take to the leap. The main take away for me was that when you take the leap you realise (1) that it was not so bad/hard afterall and (2) that you are actually better at it than you thought. I truly recommend this book to everyone procrastinating and avoiding actions they are scared off which is crucial to their personal and business development. Don’t stand in your own way. Take small steps and let the small wins snowball into a big win!

The author gave a lot of realistic examples in this book. Not only me, but also a number of people in over the world all have to encouter the decision to step out of their own comfort zone. It makes me feel being sympathized. However, almost the author's viewpoints are not novel and they are just kind of similar with myriad books, blogs, speechs which other people released about stepping outside of the comfort zone. Hence, in my opinion, this book is not impressive enough for me.

Nice book that teaches me how to be more comfortable stepping out of my comfort zone.

This book makes me feel better about myself. It reminds me that I’m not the only one who face such challenges, and it provides some techniques to overcome and grow.

The book is perhaps a little more lengthy than it needs to be. Nevertheless, a good read.

I think it's important to get outside your comfort zone, but I'm not sure that this book sold me on exactly how to do it... I'm not sure what it was that I didn't connect with, but the ideas didn't really grab me and I felt there were WAY too many examples and anecdotes.
