2025 review- I have read this book many times over the years, the last time being 11 years ago. As I have matured, I realize how problematic this book is. I'm dropping my stars from 4 to 2. There are many good tips in this book. However, it's very black and white with no nuance. It's judgemental and overly specific. It's also extrabiblical. She writes all of her suggestions as commands. It always left me feeling inadequate and never able to measure up. Now I can see why. For instance, when she talks about reading the Bible and praying, she says that you must get up early before your family and that should be the first thing you do in the morning. I would just get frustrated and quit. PLEASE, just read your Bible. For me, I have a hard time focusing in the morning. Now I read my Bible in mid afternoon or before bed (when everyone else is sleeping). There were many other commands that she gave about different areas of your life, and it's just exhausting. She also uses scripture out of context to fit her message. I do like the different sections to consider in our lives, and use that as a jumping off point to make my own goals. So, if you read this book, read it as tips for your life, not as commands like she writes them. Hold the information loosely, and just use it as inspiration. My opinion is that she is just too busy and too perfect. ____________________________________________________
This is a really great book with a lot of awesome info and ideas. The only thing I don't like is that she seems to be a bit over the top for me. She's apparently a high energy, achieving person and I am not. I'm a low energy person. So I struggle with feeling inadequate when I read her books. I have to find that balance between the good info and what I'm capable of doing.
This book really made me rethink my priorities and has helped me to put God first every day. It is a day-to-day effort, and I'm not always 100% successful, but it works wonders! Elizabeth George is a delight to read and she shares how everything we do can only be done better when our spiritual life is in order.
For a timely example, she explains that we will never be able to successfully create and keep a budget if our heart is we do not take a page from Paul's book and learn to be content:
"I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength." - Philippians 4:12-13
There are many great tips for managing all the important areas in our life including marriage, children, finances, house-cleaning (yikes!), health & fitness, friends, work, ministry, and more!
I thought this book had some really great practical tips that would especially benefit a young Christian, both practically and spiritually.
"You and I have little control over most of the events of our lives. But we do have a measure of control over the atmosphere and the order and the smooth running of our home." p. 118
I really enjoyed this book. Didn't really have a ton of Time Management ideas, but it did go into detail on how to prioritize your time, and keep you and your family focused on what you should be focusing on. I have gone back to this book many times - when struggling with one particular area in my life. Great scripture references as well.
This book is an amazing resource for women who are passionate about living and doing God's will for their lives.Elizabeth shares about why it's important to center our lives around God and gives practical ways of doing it.I was really encouraged after reading this book.
I decided to read this book again just for a refresh. Elizabeth George really lays out a helpful guideline for ordering our priorities and managing our lives well. This book always inspires me to pursue excellence in my life!
Read this with a group of girls and really enjoyed it as a resource to discuss. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much if I had read this on my own. A lot of the book is more theoretical and uses mentality shifts to focus your life on God. There were a few practical skills that we took away from it and really applied to our lives, which was very helpful. I wish there had been more of the latter. Still a great read and very easy to discuss (chapters are short so it's very doable since we met up every week to discuss the chapter we read).
Absolutely loved this book! An incredibly practical book, full of Scripture and with a heart that always points me to God, and how every single part of my life can and should be lived through and by the grace of the Lord!
I love Mrs. George's books and this has become another favorite of mine. Her books always feel as if they were written exactly for me! I will defintely be re-reading this soon!
This book was worth reading just for the first piece of advice: read your Bible every morning, before you do anything else. So obvious I can't figure out why I haven't already been doing it my whole adult live. The rest of the book was too traditional to have much relevance for me. It assumed that all women have husbands who are the main wage earner, and that husbands never want to or should be expected to contribute to making the home pleasant. It really ignored women who take our careers seriously and take pride in living out our Christian values in the work place. No, it did worse than ignore us: it implied that we have our priorities all wrong if we value our careers over plumping pillows. This book completely hijacks Proverbs 31 to apply to housewives only. Look, I "rise while it is still night" and catch a T to "work with willing hands" and "set tasks for my (employees)". Because "I perceive that my merchandise is profitable", i.e., I have a good mind and a good character and can make a contribution in the work world. The distaff and the spindle are generally in an office somewhere nowadays and there's nothing dishonorable about that. Shame on anyone who implies that those of us who are doing the best we can to take good care of our families by helping to put food on the table are somehow less worthy in God's eyes than women who have the good fortune to be financially completely taken care of by a man.
I picked up this book because I respect the author and wanted to read what she had to say about time management. The chapters and sections were divided so you could read just certain aspects if you wanted (home, finances, social, etc). While offering good advice and insights, the book doesn't sugar-coat what needs to happen to organize your life: you need to make the decision and follow through. And it's a daily commitment you have to make. I found many helpful ideas and encouragements as I seek to manage my time for the Lord. And contrary to other reviews, I didn't find the author downplaying women working outside the home. She merely pointed out that home and family are an important ministry that God has given women. My husband helps around our home but there are tasks I can do faster, more efficiently, etc.
3.5 Stars. This laid out practical advice about living out God's life for you. There were some moments that were very convicting for me such as where my priorities lie with my family. One thing that I definitely got out of it is that "something is better than nothing." So even if I begin my day off with only 5 minutes of bible reading, it's a start. If you've ever heard Elizabeth speak, you'll hear her voice as you read. The text was easy reading. Much of the information is what some call traditional but it's a good reminder of where our hearts and priorities should be particularly if you're a wife and mom.
Elizabeth George is able to help me determine priorities according to what really matters to God. It provides theological basis for planning out one's life's passions and priorities.
Some feedback complain about the book not having enough to-do's nor specifics on setting up a system. Although it doesn't quite give time management techniques, I believe the well-articulated Biblical principles are priceless foundations for me to assess my goals and plans so that they are in line with a life that treasures Christ and His Kingdom-work.
Highly recomend! There is so much in this book that convicted me that I won't be surprised if I read it again soon. The author gives each of her points from a fresh standpoint...you don't feel like she's saying "I'm better than you because I've mastered every single thing in this book." No, she makes it very clear that it is a learning process.
I found this book during a particularly challenging point in my life and it was a blessing through and through. I found it not only helped direct my chaotic life, it also helped to put me at ease with the knowledge that I wasn't the only woman struggling with these issues.
This was a good reminder that "life management" is really "self-management" under the authority of God. Elizabeth George really highlights something God has been bringing to my attention, life works better when my priorities are His first.
